Dynamic Exploitation Gaussian Bare-Bones Bat Algorithm for Optimal Reactive Power Dispatch to Improve the Safety and Stability of Power System

In this paper, a novel Gaussian bare-bones bat algorithm (GBBBA) and its modified version named as dynamic exploitation Gaussian bare-bones bat algorithm (DeGBBBA) are proposed for solving optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem. The optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) plays a fundamental role in ensuring stable, secure, reliable as well as economical operation of the power system. The ORPD problem is formulated as a complex and nonlinear optimization problem of mixed integers including both discrete and continuous control variables. Bat algorithm (BA) is one of the most popular metaheuristic algorithms which mimics the echolocation of the microbats and which has also outperformed some other metaheuristic algorithms in solving various optimization problems. Nevertheless, the standard BA may fail to balance exploration and exploitation for some optimization problems and hence it may often fall into local optima. The proposed GBBBA employs the Gaussian distribution in updating the bat positions in an effort to mitigate the premature convergence problem associated with the standard BA. The GBBBA takes advantages of Gaussian sampling which begins from exploration and continues to exploitation. DeGBBBA is an advanced variant of GBBBA in which a modified Gaussian distribution is introduced so as to allow the dynamic adaptation of exploitation and exploitation in the proposed algorithm. Both GBBBA and DeGBBBA are used to determine the optimal settings of generator bus voltages, tap setting transformers and shunt reactive sources in order to minimize the active power loss, total voltage deviations and voltage stability index. Simulation results show that GBBBA and DeGBBBA are robust and effective in solving the ORPD problem.

Automated assessment of disease severity of COVID-19 using artificial intelligence with synthetic chest CT

Background: Triage of patients is important to control the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), especially during the peak of the pandemic when clinical resources become extremely limited. Purpose: To develop a method that automatically segments and quantifies lung and pneumonia lesions with synthetic chest CT and assess disease severity in COVID-19 patients. Materials and Methods: In this study, we incorporated data augmentation to generate synthetic chest CT images using public available datasets (285 datasets from "Lung Nodule Analysis 2016"). The synthetic images and masks were used to train a 2D U-net neural network and tested on 203 COVID-19 datasets to generate lung and lesion segmentations. Disease severity scores (DL: damage load; DS: damage score) were calculated based on the segmentations. Correlations between DL/DS and clinical lab tests were evaluated using Pearson's method. A p-value < 0.05 was considered as statistical significant. Results: Automatic lung and lesion segmentations were compared with manual annotations. For lung segmentation, the median values of dice similarity coefficient, Jaccard index and average surface distance, were 98.56%, 97.15% and 0.49 mm, respectively. The same metrics for lesion segmentation were 76.95%, 62.54% and 2.36 mm, respectively. Significant (p << 0.05) correlations were found between DL/DS and percentage lymphocytes tests, with r-values of -0.561 and -0.501, respectively. Conclusion: An AI system that based on thoracic radiographic and data augmentation was proposed to segment lung and lesions in COVID-19 patients. Correlations between imaging findings and clinical lab tests suggested the value of this system as a potential tool to assess disease severity of COVID-19.

VUT: Versatile UI Transformer for Multi-Modal Multi-Task User Interface Modeling

User interface modeling is inherently multimodal, which involves several distinct types of data: images, structures and language. The tasks are also diverse, including object detection, language generation and grounding. In this paper, we present VUT, a Versatile UI Transformer that takes multimodal input and simultaneously accomplishes 5 distinct tasks with the same model. Our model consists of a multimodal Transformer encoder that jointly encodes UI images and structures, and performs UI object detection when the UI structures are absent in the input. Our model also consists of an auto-regressive Transformer model that encodes the language input and decodes output, for both question-answering and command grounding with respect to the UI. Our experiments show that for most of the tasks, when trained jointly for multi-tasks, VUT substantially reduces the number of models and footprints needed for performing multiple tasks, while achieving accuracy exceeding or on par with baseline models trained for each individual task.

A Deep-Learning Intelligent System Incorporating Data Augmentation for Short-Term Voltage Stability Assessment of Power Systems

Facing the difficulty of expensive and trivial data collection and annotation, how to make a deep learning-based short-term voltage stability assessment (STVSA) model work well on a small training dataset is a challenging and urgent problem. Although a big enough dataset can be directly generated by contingency simulation, this data generation process is usually cumbersome and inefficient; while data augmentation provides a low-cost and efficient way to artificially inflate the representative and diversified training datasets with label preserving transformations. In this respect, this paper proposes a novel deep-learning intelligent system incorporating data augmentation for STVSA of power systems. First, due to the unavailability of reliable quantitative criteria to judge the stability status for a specific power system, semi-supervised cluster learning is leveraged to obtain labeled samples in an original small dataset. Second, to make deep learning applicable to the small dataset, conditional least squares generative adversarial networks (LSGAN)-based data augmentation is introduced to expand the original dataset via artificially creating additional valid samples. Third, to extract temporal dependencies from the post-disturbance dynamic trajectories of a system, a bi-directional gated recurrent unit with attention mechanism based assessment model is established, which bi-directionally learns the significant time dependencies and automatically allocates attention weights. The test results demonstrate the presented approach manages to achieve better accuracy and a faster response time with original small datasets. Besides classification accuracy, this work employs statistical measures to comprehensively examine the performance of the proposal.

Structure-Aware Multi-Hop Graph Convolution for Graph Neural Networks

In this paper, we propose a spatial graph convolution (GC) to classify signals on a graph. Existing GC methods are limited to using the structural information in the feature space. Additionally, the single step of GCs only uses features on the one-hop neighboring nodes from the target node. In this paper, we propose two methods to improve the performance of GCs: 1) Utilizing structural information in the feature space, and 2) exploiting the multi-hop information in one GC step. In the first method, we define three structural features in the feature space: feature angle, feature distance, and relational embedding. The second method aggregates the node-wise features of multi-hop neighbors in a GC. Both methods can be simultaneously used. We also propose graph neural networks (GNNs) integrating the proposed GC for classifying nodes in 3D point clouds and citation networks. In experiments, the proposed GNNs exhibited a higher classification accuracy than existing methods.

Remarks on weak-strong uniqueness for two-fluid model

This paper concerns with the compressible two-fluid model with algebraic pressure closure. We prove a conditional weak-strong uniqueness principle, meaning that a finite energy weak solution, with bounded densities, coincides with the classical solution on the lifespan of the latter emanating from the same initial data.

High-dimensional inference via hybrid orthogonalization

The past decade has witnessed a surge of endeavors in statistical inference for high-dimensional sparse regression, particularly via de-biasing or relaxed orthogonalization. Nevertheless, these techniques typically require a more stringent sparsity condition than needed for estimation consistency, which seriously limits their practical applicability. To alleviate such constraint, we propose to exploit the identifiable features to residualize the design matrix before performing debiasing-based inference over the parameters of interest. This leads to a hybrid orthogonalization (HOT) technique that performs strict orthogonalization against the identifiable features but relaxed orthogonalization against the others. Under an approximately sparse model with a mixture of identifiable and unidentifiable signals, we establish the asymptotic normality of the HOT test statistic while accommodating as many identifiable signals as consistent estimation allows. The efficacy of the proposed test is also demonstrated through simulation and analysis of a stock market dataset.

Stochastic optimal scheduling of demand response-enabled microgrids with renewable generations: An analytical-heuristic approach

In the context of transition towards cleaner and sustainable energy production, microgrids have become an effective way for tackling environmental pollution and energy crisis issues. With the increasing penetration of renewables, how to coordinate demand response and renewable generations is a critical and challenging issue in the field of microgrid scheduling. To this end, a bi-level scheduling model is put forward for isolated microgrids with consideration of multi-stakeholders in this paper, where the lower- and upper-level models respectively aim to the minimization of user cost and microgrid operational cost under real-time electricity pricing environments. In order to solve this model, this research combines Jaya algorithm and interior point method (IPM) to develop a hybrid analysis-heuristic solution method called Jaya-IPM, where the lower- and upper- levels are respectively addressed by the IPM and the Jaya, and the scheduling scheme is obtained via iterations between the two levels. After that, the real-time prices updated by the upper-level model and the electricity plans determined by the lower-level model will be alternately iterated between the upper- and lower- levels through the real-time pricing mechanism to obtain an optimal scheduling plan. The test results show that the proposed method can coordinate the uncertainty of renewable generations with demand response strategies, thereby achieving a balance between the interests of microgrid and users; and that by leveraging demand response, the flexibility of the load side can be fully exploited to achieve peak load shaving while maintaining the balance of supply and demand. In addition, the Jaya-IPM algorithm is proven to be superior to the traditional hybrid intelligent algorithm (HIA) and the CPLEX solver in terms of optimization results and calculation efficiency.

Unsupervised COVID-19 Lesion Segmentation in CT Using Cycle Consistent Generative Adversarial Network

COVID-19 has become a global pandemic and is still posing a severe health risk to the public. Accurate and efficient segmentation of pneumonia lesions in CT scans is vital for treatment decision-making. We proposed a novel unsupervised approach using cycle consistent generative adversarial network (cycle-GAN) which automates and accelerates the process of lesion delineation. The workflow includes lung volume segmentation, "synthetic" healthy lung generation, infected and healthy image subtraction, and binary lesion mask creation. The lung volume volume was firstly delineated using a pre-trained U-net and worked as the input for the later network. The cycle-GAN was developed to generate synthetic "healthy" lung CT images from infected lung images. After that, the pneumonia lesions are extracted by subtracting the synthetic "healthy" lung CT images from the "infected" lung CT images. A median filter and K-means clustering were then applied to contour the lesions. The auto segmentation approach was validated on two public datasets (Coronacases and Radiopedia). The Dice coefficients reached 0.748 and 0.730, respectively, for the Coronacases and Radiopedia datasets. Meanwhile, the precision and sensitivity for lesion segmentationdetection are 0.813 and 0.735 for the Coronacases dataset, and 0.773 and 0.726 for the Radiopedia dataset. The performance is comparable to existing supervised segmentation networks and outperforms previous unsupervised ones. The proposed unsupervised segmentation method achieved high accuracy and efficiency in automatic COVID-19 lesion delineation. The segmentation result can serve as a baseline for further manual modification and a quality assurance tool for lesion diagnosis. Furthermore, due to its unsupervised nature, the result is not influenced by physicians' experience which otherwise is crucial for supervised methods.

Sub-Gbps key rate four-state continuous-variable quantum key distribution within metropolitan area

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) has potential advantages of high secret key rate, which is very suitable for high-speed metropolitan network application. However, the reported highest secret key rates of the CVQKD systems up to now are limited in a few Mbps. Here, we address the fundamental experimental problems and demonstrate a single-carrier four-state CVQKD with sub-Gbps key rate within metropolitan area. In the demonstrated four-state CVQKD using local local oscillator, an ultra-low level of excess noise is obtained and a high efficient post-processing setup is designed for practically extracting the final secure keys. Thus, the achieved secure key rates are 190.54 Mbps and 137.76 Mbps and 52.48 Mbps using linear channel assuming security analysis method and 233.87 Mbps, 133.6 Mbps and 21.53 Mbps using semidefinite programming security analysis method over transmission distances of 5 km, 10 km and 25 km, respectively. This record-breaking result increases the previous secret key rate record by an order of magnitude, which is sufficient to achieve the one-time pad cryptographic task. Our work shows the road for future high-rate and large-scale CVQKD deployment in secure broadband metropolitan and access networks.

Phase-reference intensity attack on continuous-variable quantum key distribution with a real local oscillator

In practical continuous-variable quantum key distribution system using local local oscillator (LLO CV-QKD), the phase noise related to coherent detection and phase-reference pulse intensity that can be locally calibrated at the receiver side is considered to be trusted noise to improve the performance. However, if the intensity of the phase-reference pulse is not monitored precisely in real-time, a security loophole will be opened for the eavesdropper to launch attacks. To this end, we propose two practical phase-reference pulse intensity attack strategies, where Eve can reduce the trusted phase noise by manipulating the intensity of the phase-reference pulse, thereby hiding her attack on the signal pulse if the total excess noise remains unchanged. The performance of the LLO CV-QKD system under these attacks has been analyzed. We show that precisely monitoring the intensity of the phase-reference pulse in real-time is an essential countermeasure to prevent the proposed attacks. Moreover, an intensity-monitoring scheme for the phase-reference pulse is proposed to strengthen the security of the practical LLO CV-QKD system and make the trusted phase noise model more robust.

Plasmon Coupling Induced Photon Scattering Torque

Bio-compatible Au nanoparticles exhibit great advantages in the application of biomedical researches, such as bio-sensing, medical diagnosis, and cancer therapy. Bio-molecules can even be manipulated by laser tweezers with the optically trapped Au nanoparticles as handles. In this Letter, optical scattering torque arising from the coupled Au nanoparticles driven by circularly polarized light is theoretically presented. The coupled plasmon resonance modes boost the angular momentum transfer from photons to the Au nanoparticle dimers and trimers through light scattering, which does not bring any optical-heating side effect. The generated optical torques on the nanostructures highly depend on the plasmon coupling in the structures. The angular momentum transfer efficiencies from scattered photons to nanostructures can reach around 200\%. The results suggest that coupled plasmonic nanoparticle oligomers are promising candidates to construct optically driven rotary nanomotors that can be applied in biomedical applications.

Spiking CapsNet: A Spiking Neural Network With A Biologically Plausible Routing Rule Between Capsules

Spiking neural network (SNN) has attracted much attention due to their powerful spatio-temporal information representation ability. Capsule Neural Network (CapsNet) does well in assembling and coupling features at different levels. Here, we propose Spiking CapsNet by introducing the capsules into the modelling of spiking neural networks. In addition, we propose a more biologically plausible Spike Timing Dependent Plasticity routing mechanism. By fully considering the spatio-temporal relationship between the low-level spiking capsules and the high-level spiking capsules, the coupling ability between them is further improved. We have verified experiments on the MNIST and FashionMNIST datasets. Compared with other excellent SNN models, our algorithm still achieves high performance. Our Spiking CapsNet fully combines the strengthens of SNN and CapsNet, and shows strong robustness to noise and affine transformation. By adding different Salt-Pepper and Gaussian noise to the test dataset, the experimental results demonstrate that our Spiking CapsNet shows a more robust performance when there is more noise, while the artificial neural network can not correctly clarify. As well, our Spiking CapsNet shows strong generalization to affine transformation on the AffNIST dataset.

Learnable Fourier Features for Multi-Dimensional Spatial Positional Encoding

Attentional mechanisms are order-invariant. Positional encoding is a crucial component to allow attention-based deep model architectures such as Transformer to address sequences or images where the position of information matters. In this paper, we propose a novel positional encoding method based on learnable Fourier features. Instead of hard-coding each position as a token or a vector, we represent each position, which can be multi-dimensional, as a trainable encoding based on learnable Fourier feature mapping, modulated with a multi-layer perceptron. The representation is particularly advantageous for a spatial multi-dimensional position, e.g., pixel positions on an image, where $L_2$ distances or more complex positional relationships need to be captured. Our experiments based on several public benchmark tasks show that our learnable Fourier feature representation for multi-dimensional positional encoding outperforms existing methods by both improving the accuracy and allowing faster convergence.

DSBERT:Unsupervised Dialogue Structure learning with BERT

Unsupervised dialogue structure learning is an important and meaningful task in natural language processing. The extracted dialogue structure and process can help analyze human dialogue, and play a vital role in the design and evaluation of dialogue systems. The traditional dialogue system requires experts to manually design the dialogue structure, which is very costly. But through unsupervised dialogue structure learning, dialogue structure can be automatically obtained, reducing the cost of developers constructing dialogue process. The learned dialogue structure can be used to promote the dialogue generation of the downstream task system, and improve the logic and consistency of the dialogue robot's reply. In this paper, we propose a Bert-based unsupervised dialogue structure learning algorithm DSBERT (Dialogue Structure BERT). Different from the previous SOTA models VRNN and SVRNN, we combine BERT and AutoEncoder, which can effectively combine context information. In order to better prevent the model from falling into the local optimal solution and make the dialogue state distribution more uniform and reasonable, we also propose three balanced loss functions that can be used for dialogue structure learning. Experimental results show that DSBERT can generate a dialogue structure closer to the real structure, can distinguish sentences with different semantics and map them to different hidden states.

OpenBox: A Generalized Black-box Optimization Service

Black-box optimization (BBO) has a broad range of applications, including automatic machine learning, engineering, physics, and experimental design. However, it remains a challenge for users to apply BBO methods to their problems at hand with existing software packages, in terms of applicability, performance, and efficiency. In this paper, we build OpenBox, an open-source and general-purpose BBO service with improved usability. The modular design behind OpenBox also facilitates flexible abstraction and optimization of basic BBO components that are common in other existing systems. OpenBox is distributed, fault-tolerant, and scalable. To improve efficiency, OpenBox further utilizes "algorithm agnostic" parallelization and transfer learning. Our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of OpenBox compared to existing systems.

Solving Partial Differential Equations with Point Source Based on Physics-Informed Neural Networks

In recent years, deep learning technology has been used to solve partial differential equations (PDEs), among which the physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) emerges to be a promising method for solving both forward and inverse PDE problems. PDEs with a point source that is expressed as a Dirac delta function in the governing equations are mathematical models of many physical processes. However, they cannot be solved directly by conventional PINNs method due to the singularity brought by the Dirac delta function. We propose a universal solution to tackle this problem with three novel techniques. Firstly the Dirac delta function is modeled as a continuous probability density function to eliminate the singularity; secondly a lower bound constrained uncertainty weighting algorithm is proposed to balance the PINNs losses between point source area and other areas; and thirdly a multi-scale deep neural network with periodic activation function is used to improve the accuracy and convergence speed of the PINNs method. We evaluate the proposed method with three representative PDEs, and the experimental results show that our method outperforms existing deep learning-based methods with respect to the accuracy, the efficiency and the versatility.

A critical review of data-driven transient stability assessment of power systems: principles, prospects and challenges

Transient stability assessment (TSA) has always been a fundamental means for ensuring the secure and stable operation of power systems. Due to the integration of new elements such as power electronics, electric vehicles and renewable power generations, dynamic characteristics of power systems are becoming more and more complex, which makes TSA an increasingly urgent task. Since traditional time-domain simulations and direct method cannot meet the actual operation requirements of power systems, data-driven TSA has attracted growing attention from both academia and industry. This paper makes a comprehensive review from the following four aspects: feature extraction and selection, model construction, online learning and rule extraction; and then, summarizes the challenges and prospects for future research; finally, draws the conclusions of this review. This review will be beneficial for relevant researchers to better understand the research status, key technologies and existing challenges in the field.
