MD Simulation of Hundred-Billion-Metal-Atom Cascade Collision on Sunway Taihulight

Radiation damage to the steel material of reactor pressure vessels is a major threat to the nuclear reactor safety. It is caused by the metal atom cascade collision, initialized when the atoms are struck by a high-energy neutron. The paper presents MISA-MD, a new implementation of molecular dynamics, to simulate such cascade collision with EAM potential. MISA-MD realizes (1) a hash-based data structure to efficiently store an atom and find its neighbors, and (2) several acceleration and optimization strategies based on SW26010 processor of Sunway Taihulight supercomputer, including an efficient potential table storage and interpolation method, a coloring method to avoid write conflicts, and double-buffer and data reuse strategies. The experimental results demonstrated that MISA-MD has good accuracy and scalability, and obtains a parallel efficiency of over 79% in an 655-billion-atom system. Compared with a state-of-the-art MD program LAMMPS, MISA-MD requires less memory usage and achieves better computational performance.

Markov Blanket Discovery using Minimum Message Length

Causal discovery automates the learning of causal Bayesian networks from data and has been of active interest from their beginning. With the sourcing of large data sets off the internet, interest in scaling up to very large data sets has grown. One approach to this is to parallelize search using Markov Blanket (MB) discovery as a first step, followed by a process of combining MBs in a global causal model. We develop and explore three new methods of MB discovery using Minimum Message Length (MML) and compare them empirically to the best existing methods, whether developed specifically as MB discovery or as feature selection. Our best MML method is consistently competitive and has some advantageous features.

Privacy-preserving Spatiotemporal Scenario Generation of Renewable Energies: A Federated Deep Generative Learning Approach

Scenario generation is a fundamental and crucial tool for decision-making in power systems with high-penetration renewables. Based on big historical data, a novel federated deep generative learning framework, called Fed-LSGAN, is proposed by integrating federated learning and least square generative adversarial networks (LSGANs) for renewable scenario generation. Specifically, federated learning learns a shared global model in a central server from renewable sites at network edges, which enables the Fed-LSGAN to generate scenarios in a privacy-preserving manner without sacrificing the generation quality by transferring model parameters, rather than all data. Meanwhile, the LSGANs-based deep generative model generates scenarios that conform to the distribution of historical data through fully capturing the spatial-temporal characteristics of renewable powers, which leverages the least squares loss function to improve the training stability and generation quality. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposal manages to generate high-quality renewable scenarios and outperforms the state-of-the-art centralized methods. Besides, an experiment with different federated learning settings is designed and conducted to verify the robustness of our method.

Coordinating Flexible Demand Response and Renewable Uncertainties for Scheduling of Community Integrated Energy Systems with an Electric Vehicle Charging Station: A Bi-level Approach

A community integrated energy system (CIES) with an electric vehicle charging station (EVCS) provides a new way for tackling growing concerns of energy efficiency and environmental pollution, it is a critical task to coordinate flexible demand response and multiple renewable uncertainties. To this end, a novel bi-level optimal dispatching model for the CIES with an EVCS in multi-stakeholder scenarios is established in this paper. In this model, an integrated demand response program is designed to promote a balance between energy supply and demand while maintaining a user comprehensive satisfaction within an acceptable range. To further tap the potential of demand response through flexibly guiding users' energy consumption and electric vehicles' behaviors (charging, discharging and providing spinning reserves), a dynamic pricing mechanism combining time-of-use and real-time pricing is put forward. In the solution phase, by using sequence operation theory (SOT), the original chance-constrained programming (CCP) model is converted into a readily solvable mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) formulation and finally solved by CPLEX solver. The simulation results on a practical CIES located in North China demonstrate that the presented method manages to balance the interests between CIES and EVCS via the coordination of flexible demand response and uncertain renewables.

Dynamic State Estimation for Integrated Natural Gas and Electric Power Systems

A dynamic state estimation method of integrated natural gas and electric power systems (IGESs) in proposed. Firstly, the coupling model of gas pipeline networks and power systems by gas turbine units (GTUs) is established. Secondly, the Kalman filter based linear DSE model for the IGES is built. The gas density and mass flow rate, as well as the real and imaginary parts of bus voltages are taken as states, which are predicted by the linearized fluid dynamic equations of gases and exponential smoothing techniques. Boundary conditions of pipeline networks are used as supplementary constraints in the system model. At last, the proposed method is applied to an IGES including a 30-node pipeline network and IEEE 39-bus system coupled by two GTUs. Two indexes are used to evaluate the DSE performance under three measurement error conditions, and the results show that the DSE can obtain the accurate dynamic states in different conditions.

Towards Robust Active Feature Acquisition

Truly intelligent systems are expected to make critical decisions with incomplete and uncertain data. Active feature acquisition (AFA), where features are sequentially acquired to improve the prediction, is a step towards this goal. However, current AFA models all deal with a small set of candidate features and have difficulty scaling to a large feature space. Moreover, they are ignorant about the valid domains where they can predict confidently, thus they can be vulnerable to out-of-distribution (OOD) inputs. In order to remedy these deficiencies and bring AFA models closer to practical use, we propose several techniques to advance the current AFA approaches. Our framework can easily handle a large number of features using a hierarchical acquisition policy and is more robust to OOD inputs with the help of an OOD detector for partially observed data. Extensive experiments demonstrate the efficacy of our framework over strong baselines.

Attribute-aware Explainable Complementary Clothing Recommendation

Modelling mix-and-match relationships among fashion items has become increasingly demanding yet challenging for modern E-commerce recommender systems. When performing clothes matching, most existing approaches leverage the latent visual features extracted from fashion item images for compatibility modelling, which lacks explainability of generated matching results and can hardly convince users of the recommendations. Though recent methods start to incorporate pre-defined attribute information (e.g., colour, style, length, etc.) for learning item representations and improving the model interpretability, their utilisation of attribute information is still mainly reserved for enhancing the learned item representations and generating explanations via post-processing. As a result, this creates a severe bottleneck when we are trying to advance the recommendation accuracy and generating fine-grained explanations since the explicit attributes have only loose connections to the actual recommendation process. This work aims to tackle the explainability challenge in fashion recommendation tasks by proposing a novel Attribute-aware Fashion Recommender (AFRec). Specifically, AFRec recommender assesses the outfit compatibility by explicitly leveraging the extracted attribute-level representations from each item's visual feature. The attributes serve as the bridge between two fashion items, where we quantify the affinity of a pair of items through the learned compatibility between their attributes. Extensive experiments have demonstrated that, by making full use of the explicit attributes in the recommendation process, AFRec is able to achieve state-of-the-art recommendation accuracy and generate intuitive explanations at the same time.

Virtual synchronous generator of PV generation without energy storage for frequency support in autonomous microgrid

In autonomous microgrids frequency regulation (FR) is a critical issue, especially with a high level of penetration of the photovoltaic (PV) generation. In this study, a novel virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control for PV generation was introduced to provide frequency support without energy storage. PV generation reserve a part of the active power in accordance with the pre-defined power versus voltage curve. Based on the similarities of the synchronous generator power-angle characteristic curve and the PV array characteristic curve, PV voltage Vpv can be analogized to the power angle δ. An emulated governor (droop control) and the swing equation control is designed and applied to the DC-DC converter. PV voltage deviation is subsequently generated and the pre-defined power versus voltage curve is modified to provide the primary frequency and inertia support. A simulation model of an autonomous microgrid with PV, storage, and diesel generator was built. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed VSG strategy are examined under different operating conditions.

On convergence of numerical solutions for the compressible MHD system with exactly divergence-free magnetic field

We study a general convergence theory for the numerical solutions of compressible viscous and electrically conducting fluids with a focus on numerical schemes that preserve the divergence free property of magnetic field exactly. Our strategy utilizes the recent concepts of dissipative weak solutions and consistent approximations. First, we show the dissipative weak--strong uniqueness principle, meaning a dissipative weak solution coincides with a classical solution as long as they emanate from the same initial data. Next, we show the convergence of consistent approximation towards the dissipative weak solution and thus the classical solution. Upon interpreting the consistent approximation as the stability and consistency of suitable numerical solutions we have established a generalized Lax equivalence theory: convergence $\Longleftrightarrow$ stability and consistency. Further, to illustrate the application of this theory, we propose two novel mixed finite volume-finite element methods with exact divergence-free magnetic field. Finally, by showing solutions of these two schemes are consistent approximations, we conclude their convergence towards the dissipative weak solution and the classical solution.

Dep-$L_0$: Improving $L_0$-based Network Sparsification via Dependency Modeling

Training deep neural networks with an $L_0$ regularization is one of the prominent approaches for network pruning or sparsification. The method prunes the network during training by encouraging weights to become exactly zero. However, recent work of Gale et al. reveals that although this method yields high compression rates on smaller datasets, it performs inconsistently on large-scale learning tasks, such as ResNet50 on ImageNet. We analyze this phenomenon through the lens of variational inference and find that it is likely due to the independent modeling of binary gates, the mean-field approximation, which is known in Bayesian statistics for its poor performance due to the crude approximation. To mitigate this deficiency, we propose a dependency modeling of binary gates, which can be modeled effectively as a multi-layer perceptron (MLP). We term our algorithm Dep-$L_0$ as it prunes networks via a dependency-enabled $L_0$ regularization. Extensive experiments on CIFAR10, CIFAR100 and ImageNet with VGG16, ResNet50, ResNet56 show that our Dep-$L_0$ outperforms the original $L_0$-HC algorithm of Louizos et al. by a significant margin, especially on ImageNet. Compared with the state-of-the-arts network sparsification algorithms, our dependency modeling makes the $L_0$-based sparsification once again very competitive on large-scale learning tasks. Context-Aware Attention-Based Data Augmentation for POI Recommendation

With the rapid growth of location-based social networks (LBSNs), Point-Of-Interest (POI) recommendation has been broadly studied in this decade. Recently, the next POI recommendation, a natural extension of POI recommendation, has attracted much attention. It aims at suggesting the next POI to a user in spatial and temporal context, which is a practical yet challenging task in various applications. Existing approaches mainly model the spatial and temporal information, and memorize historical patterns through user's trajectories for recommendation. However, they suffer from the negative impact of missing and irregular check-in data, which significantly influences the model performance. In this paper, we propose an attention-based sequence-to-sequence generative model, namely POI-Augmentation Seq2Seq (PA-Seq2Seq), to address the sparsity of training set by making check-in records to be evenly-spaced. Specifically, the encoder summarises each check-in sequence and the decoder predicts the possible missing check-ins based on the encoded information. In order to learn time-aware correlation among user history, we employ local attention mechanism to help the decoder focus on a specific range of context information when predicting a certain missing check-in point. Extensive experiments have been conducted on two real-world check-in datasets, Gowalla and Brightkite, for performance and effectiveness evaluation.

NTIRE 2021 Challenge on Perceptual Image Quality Assessment

This paper reports on the NTIRE 2021 challenge on perceptual image quality assessment (IQA), held in conjunction with the New Trends in Image Restoration and Enhancement workshop (NTIRE) workshop at CVPR 2021. As a new type of image processing technology, perceptual image processing algorithms based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) have produced images with more realistic textures. These output images have completely different characteristics from traditional distortions, thus pose a new challenge for IQA methods to evaluate their visual quality. In comparison with previous IQA challenges, the training and testing datasets in this challenge include the outputs of perceptual image processing algorithms and the corresponding subjective scores. Thus they can be used to develop and evaluate IQA methods on GAN-based distortions. The challenge has 270 registered participants in total. In the final testing stage, 13 participating teams submitted their models and fact sheets. Almost all of them have achieved much better results than existing IQA methods, while the winning method can demonstrate state-of-the-art performance.

Checking chordality on homomorphically encrypted graphs

The breakthrough of achieving fully homomorphic encryption sparked enormous studies on where and how to apply homomorphic encryption schemes so that operations can be performed on encrypted data without the secret key while still obtaining the correct outputs. Due to the computational cost, inflated ciphertext size and limited arithmetic operations that are allowed in most encryption schemes, feasible applications of homomorphic encryption are few. While theorists are working on the mathematical and cryptographical foundations of homomorphic encryption in order to overcome the current limitations, practitioners are also re-designing queries and algorithms to adapt the functionalities of the current encryption schemes. As an initial study on working with homomorphically encrypted graphs, this paper provides an easy-to-implement interactive algorithm to check whether or not a homomorphically encrypted graph is chordal. This algorithm is simply a refactoring of a current method to run on the encrypted adjacency matrices.

Instance-based Vision Transformer for Subtyping of Papillary Renal Cell Carcinoma in Histopathological Image

Histological subtype of papillary (p) renal cell carcinoma (RCC), type 1 vs. type 2, is an essential prognostic factor. The two subtypes of pRCC have a similar pattern, i.e., the papillary architecture, yet some subtle differences, including cellular and cell-layer level patterns. However, the cellular and cell-layer level patterns almost cannot be captured by existing CNN-based models in large-size histopathological images, which brings obstacles to directly applying these models to such a fine-grained classification task. This paper proposes a novel instance-based Vision Transformer (i-ViT) to learn robust representations of histopathological images for the pRCC subtyping task by extracting finer features from instance patches (by cropping around segmented nuclei and assigning predicted grades). The proposed i-ViT takes top-K instances as input and aggregates them for capturing both the cellular and cell-layer level patterns by a position-embedding layer, a grade-embedding layer, and a multi-head multi-layer self-attention module. To evaluate the performance of the proposed framework, experienced pathologists are invited to selected 1162 regions of interest from 171 whole slide images of type 1 and type 2 pRCC. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves better performance than existing CNN-based models with a significant margin.

Enhance Multimodal Model Performance with Data Augmentation: Facebook Hateful Meme Challenge Solution

Hateful content detection is one of the areas where deep learning can and should make a significant difference. The Hateful Memes Challenge from Facebook helps fulfill such potential by challenging the contestants to detect hateful speech in multi-modal memes using deep learning algorithms. In this paper, we utilize multi-modal, pre-trained models VilBERT and Visual BERT. We improved models' performance by adding training datasets generated from data augmentation. Enlarging the training data set helped us get a more than 2% boost in terms of AUROC with the Visual BERT model. Our approach achieved 0.7439 AUROC along with an accuracy of 0.7037 on the challenge's test set, which revealed remarkable progress.

Graph Routing between Capsules

Routing methods in capsule networks often learn a hierarchical relationship for capsules in successive layers, but the intra-relation between capsules in the same layer is less studied, while this intra-relation is a key factor for the semantic understanding in text data. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce a new capsule network with graph routing to learn both relationships, where capsules in each layer are treated as the nodes of a graph. We investigate strategies to yield adjacency and degree matrix with three different distances from a layer of capsules, and propose the graph routing mechanism between those capsules. We validate our approach on five text classification datasets, and our findings suggest that the approach combining bottom-up routing and top-down attention performs the best. Such an approach demonstrates generalization capability across datasets. Compared to the state-of-the-art routing methods, the improvements in accuracy in the five datasets we used were 0.82, 0.39, 0.07, 1.01, and 0.02, respectively.

Nuclei Grading of Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma in Histopathological Image by Composite High-Resolution Network

The grade of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is a critical prognostic factor, making ccRCC nuclei grading a crucial task in RCC pathology analysis. Computer-aided nuclei grading aims to improve pathologists' work efficiency while reducing their misdiagnosis rate by automatically identifying the grades of tumor nuclei within histopathological images. Such a task requires precisely segment and accurately classify the nuclei. However, most of the existing nuclei segmentation and classification methods can not handle the inter-class similarity property of nuclei grading, thus can not be directly applied to the ccRCC grading task. In this paper, we propose a Composite High-Resolution Network for ccRCC nuclei grading. Specifically, we propose a segmentation network called W-Net that can separate the clustered nuclei. Then, we recast the fine-grained classification of nuclei to two cross-category classification tasks, based on two high-resolution feature extractors (HRFEs) which are proposed for learning these two tasks. The two HRFEs share the same backbone encoder with W-Net by a composite connection so that meaningful features for the segmentation task can be inherited for the classification task. Last, a head-fusion block is applied to generate the predicted label of each nucleus. Furthermore, we introduce a dataset for ccRCC nuclei grading, containing 1000 image patches with 70945 annotated nuclei. We demonstrate that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance compared to existing methods on this large ccRCC grading dataset.
