The Complexity of Morality: Checking Markov Blanket Consistency with DAGs via Morality

A family of Markov blankets in a faithful Bayesian network satisfies the symmetry and consistency properties. In this paper, we draw a bijection between families of consistent Markov blankets and moral graphs. We define the new concepts of weak recursive simpliciality and perfect elimination kits. We prove that they are equivalent to graph morality. In addition, we prove that morality can be decided in polynomial time for graphs with maximum degree less than $5$, but the problem is NP-complete for graphs with higher maximum degrees.

On global-in-time weak solutions to the magnetohydrodynamic system of compressible inviscid fluids

We consider the motion of an inviscid compressible fluid under the mutual interactions with magnetic field. We show that the initial value problem is ill--posed in the class of weak solutions for a large class of physically admissible data. We also consider the same problem for inviscid heat--conductive fluid and show the same result under certain restrictions imposed on the magnetic field. The main tool is the method of convex integration adapted to the Euler system with `variable coefficients'.

Modeling Mobile Interface Tappability Using Crowdsourcing and Deep Learning

Tapping is an immensely important gesture in mobile touchscreen interfaces, yet people still frequently are required to learn which elements are tappable through trial and error. Predicting human behavior for this everyday gesture can help mobile app designers understand an important aspect of the usability of their apps without having to run a user study. In this paper, we present an approach for modeling tappability of mobile interfaces at scale. We conducted large-scale data collection of interface tappability over a rich set of mobile apps using crowdsourcing and computationally investigated a variety of signifiers that people use to distinguish tappable versus not-tappable elements. Based on the dataset, we developed and trained a deep neural network that predicts how likely a user will perceive an interface element as tappable versus not tappable. Using the trained tappability model, we developed TapShoe, a tool that automatically diagnoses mismatches between the tappability of each element as perceived by a human user---predicted by our model, and the intended or actual tappable state of the element specified by the developer or designer. Our model achieved reasonable accuracy: mean precision 90.2\% and recall 87.0\%, in matching human perception on identifying tappable UI elements. The tappability model and TapShoe were well received by designers via an informal evaluation with 7 professional interaction designers.

Robust Cubature Kalman Filter for Dynamic State Estimation of Synchronous Machines under Unknown Measurement Noise Statistics

Kalman-type filtering techniques including cubature Kalman filter (CKF) does not work well in non-Gaussian environments, especially in the presence of outliers. To solve this problem, Huber's M-estimation based robust CKF (RCKF) is proposed for synchronous machines by combining the Huber's M-estimation theory with the classical CKF, which is capable of coping with the deterioration in performance and discretization of tracking curves when measurement noise statistics deviatefrom the prior noise statistics. The proposed RCKF algorithm has good adaptability to unknown measurement noise statistics characteristics including non-Gaussian measurement noise and outliers. The simulation results on the WSCC 3-machine 9-bus system and New England 16-machine 68-bus system verify the effectiveness of the proposed method and its advantage over the classical CKF.

Towards Touch-to-Access Device Authentication Using Induced Body Electric Potentials

This paper presents TouchAuth, a new touch-to-access device authentication approach using induced body electric potentials (iBEPs) caused by the indoor ambient electric field that is mainly emitted from the building's electrical cabling. The design of TouchAuth is based on the electrostatics of iBEP generation and a resulting property, i.e., the iBEPs at two close locations on the same human body are similar, whereas those from different human bodies are distinct. Extensive experiments verify the above property and show that TouchAuth achieves high-profile receiver operating characteristics in implementing the touch-to-access policy. Our experiments also show that a range of possible interfering sources including appliances' electromagnetic emanations and noise injections into the power network do not affect the performance of TouchAuth. A key advantage of TouchAuth is that the iBEP sensing requires a simple analog-to-digital converter only, which is widely available on microcontrollers. Compared with existing approaches including intra-body communication and physiological sensing, TouchAuth is a low-cost, lightweight, and convenient approach for authorized users to access the smart objects found in indoor environments.

Remarks on the Casimir Self-Entropy of a Spherical Electromagnetic $δ$-Function Shell

Recently the Casimir self-entropy of an electromagnetic $δ$-function shell was considered by two different groups, with apparently discordant conclusions, although both had concluded that a region of negative entropy existed for sufficiently weak coupling. We had found that the entropy contained an infrared divergence, which we argued should be discarded on physical grounds. On the contrary, Bordag and Kirsten recently found a completely finite self-entropy, although they, in fact, have to remove an infrared divergence. Apart from this, the high- and low-temperature results for finite coupling agree precisely for the transverse electric mode, but there are significant discrepancies in the transverse magnetic mode. We resolve those discrepancies here. In particular, it is shown that coupling-independent terms do not occur in a consistent regulated calculation, they likely being an artefact of the omission of pole terms. The results of our previous analysis, especially, the existence of a negative entropy region for sufficiently weak coupling, are therefore confirmed. Finally, we offer some analogous remarks concerning the Casimir entropy of a thin electromagnetic sheet, where the total entropy is always positive. In that case, the origin of the analogous discrepancy can be explicitly isolated.

Casimir forces in inhomogeneous media: renormalization and the principle of virtual work

We calculate the Casimir forces in two configurations, namely, three parallel dielectric slabs and a dielectric slab between two perfectly conducting plates, where the dielectric materials are dispersive and inhomogeneous in the direction perpendicular to the interfaces. A renormalization scheme is proposed consisting of subtracting the effect of one interface with a single inhomogeneous medium. Some examples are worked out to illustrate this scheme. Our method always gives finite results and is consistent with the principle of virtual work; it extends the Dzyaloshinskii-Lifshitz-Pitaeveskii force to inhomogeneous media.

Phonetic-enriched Text Representation for Chinese Sentiment Analysis with Reinforcement Learning

The Chinese pronunciation system offers two characteristics that distinguish it from other languages: deep phonemic orthography and intonation variations. We are the first to argue that these two important properties can play a major role in Chinese sentiment analysis. Particularly, we propose two effective features to encode phonetic information. Next, we develop a Disambiguate Intonation for Sentiment Analysis (DISA) network using a reinforcement network. It functions as disambiguating intonations for each Chinese character (pinyin). Thus, a precise phonetic representation of Chinese is learned. Furthermore, we also fuse phonetic features with textual and visual features in order to mimic the way humans read and understand Chinese text. Experimental results on five different Chinese sentiment analysis datasets show that the inclusion of phonetic features significantly and consistently improves the performance of textual and visual representations and outshines the state-of-the-art Chinese character level representations.

Feature Selection for Transient Stability Assessment Based on Improved Maximal Relevance and Minimal Redundancy Criterion

A new feature selection method based on an improved maximal relevance and minimal redundancy (mRMR) criterion was proposed for power system transient stability assessment. First, the standard mRMR was improved by introducing a weight coefficient in the evaluation criteria to refine the measurement of the features correlation and redundancy. Then, the possible real-time information provided by phasor measurement unit (PMU) considered, a group of system-level classification features were extracted from the power system operation parameters to build the original feature set, and the improved mRMR was employed to evaluate the classification capability of the original features for feature selection. A group of nested candidate feature subsets were obtained by using the incremental search technique, and each candidate feature subset was tested by a support vector machine classifier to find the optimal feature subset with the highest classification accuracy. The effectiveness of the proposed method was validated by the simulation results on the New England 39-bus system and IEEE 50-generator test system.

Transient Stability Assessment of Power Systems Based on Local Learning Machine and Bacterial Colony Chemotaxis Algorithm

In order to improve the classification accuracy of transient stability assessment of power systems, a novel method based on local learning machine and an improved bacterial colony chemotaxis (BCC) algorithm is proposed, where local learning machine(LLM) is used to build a TSA model. Considering the possible real-time information provided by PMU, a group of system-level classification features extracted from the power system operation parameters are employed as inputs, and the stability result is used as output of the LLM model. The relation ship between input and output is trained and the ideal model is obtained by applying the improved BCC combined with chaotic search strategy to determine the optimal parameters of LLM automatically. The effectiveness of the proposed method is shown by the simulation results on the New England 10-unit-39-bus power system.

Incorporating energy storage and user experience in isolated microgrid dispatch using a multi-objective model

In order to coordinate multiple different scheduling objectives from the perspectives of economy, environment and users, a practical multi-objective dynamic optimal dispatch model incorporating energy storage and user experience is proposed for isolated microgrids. In this model, besides Microturbine units, energy storage is employed to provide spinning reserve services for microgirds; and furthermore, from the perspective of demand side management, a consumer satisfaction indicator is developed to measure the quality of user experience. A two-step solution methodology incorporating multi-objective optimization (MOO) and decision analysis is put forward to address this model. First, a powerful heuristic optimization algorithm, called the θ-dominance based evolutionary algorithm, is used to find a well-distributed set of Pareto-optimal solutions of the problem. And thereby, the best compromise solutions (BCSs) are identified from the entire solutions with the use of decision analysis by integrating fuzzy C-means clustering and grey relation projection. The simulation results on the modified Oak Ridge National Laboratory Distributed Energy Control and Communication lab microgrid test system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Twist-angle dependence of the proximity spin-orbit coupling in graphene on transition-metal dichalcogenides

We theoretically study the proximity spin-orbit coupling in graphene on transition-metal dichalcogenides monolayer stacked with arbitrary twist angles. We find that the relative rotation greatly enhances the spin splitting of graphene, typically by a few to ten times compared to the non-rotated geometry, and the maximum splitting is achieved around $20^\circ$. The induced SOC can be changed from the Zeeman-type to the Rashba-type by rotation. The spin-splitting is also quite sensitive to the gate-induced potential, and it sharply rises when the graphene's Dirac point is shifted toward the TMDC band. The theoretical method does not need the exact lattice matching and it is applicable to any incommensurate bilayer systems. It is useful for the twist-angle engineering of a variety of van der Waals proximity effects.

Ensemble Feature for Person Re-Identification

In person re-identification (re-ID), the key task is feature representation, which is used to compute distance or similarity in prediction. Person re-ID achieves great improvement when deep learning methods are introduced to tackle this problem. The features extracted by convolutional neural networks (CNN) are more effective and discriminative than the hand-crafted features. However, deep feature extracted by a single CNN network is not robust enough in testing stage. To improve the ability of feature representation, we propose a new ensemble network (EnsembleNet) by dividing a single network into multiple end-to-end branches. The ensemble feature is obtained by concatenating each of the branch features to represent a person. EnsembleNet is designed based on ResNet-50 and its backbone shares most of the parameters for saving computation and memory cost. Experimental results show that our EnsembleNet achieves the state-of-the-art performance on the public Market1501, DukeMTMC-reID and CUHK03 person re-ID benchmarks.

Face Recognition System

Deep learning is one of the new and important branches in machine learning. Deep learning refers to a set of algorithms that solve various problems such as images and texts by using various machine learning algorithms in multi-layer neural networks. Deep learning can be classified as a neural network from the general category, but there are many changes in the concrete realization. At the core of deep learning is feature learning, which is designed to obtain hierarchical information through hierarchical networks, so as to solve the important problems that previously required artificial design features. Deep Learning is a framework that contains several important algorithms. For different applications (images, voice, text), you need to use different network models to achieve better results. With the development of deep learning and the introduction of deep convolutional neural networks, the accuracy and speed of face recognition have made great strides. However, as we said above, the results from different networks and models are very different. In this paper, facial features are extracted by merging and comparing multiple models, and then a deep neural network is constructed to train and construct the combined features. In this way, the advantages of multiple models can be combined to mention the recognition accuracy. After getting a model with high accuracy, we build a product model. This article compares the pure-client model with the server-client model, analyzes the pros and cons of the two models, and analyzes the various commercial products that are required for the server-client model.

Universal Correlation between Critical Temperature of Superconductivity and band structure features

The critical temperature (${T}_\text{c}$) of superconductors varies a lot. The factors governing the ${T}_\text{c}$ may hold key clues to understand the nature of the superconductivity. Thereby, ${T}_\text{c}$-involved correlations, such as Matthias laws, Uemura law, and cuprates doping phase diagrams, have been of great concern. However, the electronic interaction being responsible for the carriers pairing in high-${T}_\text{c}$ superconductors is still not clear, which calls for more comprehensive analyses of the experimental data in history. In this work, we propose a novel perspective for searching material gene parameters and ${T}_\text{c}$-involved correlations. By exploring holistic band structure features of diverse superconductors, we found a universal correlation between the ${T}_\text{c}$ maxima and the electron energy levels for all kinds of superconducting materials. It suggests that the ${T}_\text{c}$ maxima are determined by the energy level of secondary-outer orbitals, rather than the band structure nearby the Fermi level. The energy level of secondary-outer orbitals is a parameter corresponding to the ratio of atomic orbital hybridization, implying that the fluctuation of the orbital hybridization is another candidate of pairing glue.

Controlled islanding for a hybrid AC/DC grid with VSC-HVDC using semi-supervised spectral clustering

As the last resort of emergency control, controlled islanding is an effective means of preventing fault-propagation and a system-wide blackout. However, conventional AC transmission lines are unavailable to be employed for power exchange between these islands. To make full use of the DC power modulation capability of VSC-HVDC links, a new controlled islanding model is put forward for an AC/VSC-HVDC hybrid grid to minimize the composite power-flow disruption, in which the DC-terminals belonging to a VSC-HVDC link are placed in different islands. To solve this model, a semi-supervised spectral clustering-based approach is proposed by transforming the problem into a weighted undirected graph segmentation problem. The novelty of our work is to find an optimal islanding solution in real time such that the power exchanges between islands are implemented via a VSC-HVDC link to reduce the generation-load imbalance. The simulation results on the IEEE 39-bus system and a real-world system verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed approach.

Two-Step Many-Objective Optimal Power Flow Based on Knee Point-Driven Evolutionary Algorithm

To coordinate the economy, security and environment protection in the power system operation, a two-step many-objective optimal power flow (MaOPF) solution method is proposed. In step 1, it is the first time that knee point-driven evolutionary algorithm (KnEA) is introduced to address the MaOPF problem, and thereby the Pareto-optimal solutions can be obtained. In step 2, an integrated decision analysis technique is utilized to provide decision makers with decision supports by combining fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering and grey relational projection (GRP) method together. In this way, the best compromise solutions (BCSs) that represent decision makers' different, even conflicting, preferences can be automatically determined from the set of Pareto-optimal solutions. The primary contribution of the proposal is the innovative application of many-objective optimization together with decision analysis for addressing MaOPF problems. Through examining the two-step method via the IEEE 118-bus system and the real-world Hebei provincial power system, it is verified that our approach is suitable for addressing the MaOPF problem of power systems.
