Optimal Power Flow for AC/DC System Based on Cooperative Multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization

In order to unifiedly coordinate economy and voltage deviations, a novel multi-objective optimal power flow (MOPF) algorithm is proposed for an AC/DC system with VSC-HVDC based on cooperative multi-objective particle swarm optimization (CMOPSO). In order to minimize power generation costs and voltage deviations, the MOPF model of the AC/DC system is firstly built based on the VSC-HVDC steady-state model. Then, the CMOPSO is adopted for solving the MOPF model to find well-distributed Pareto-optimal solutions. Next, the solutions are divided into different groups via the fuzzy C-means algorithm, and finally the best compromise solutions reflecting decision-makers' different preferences are identified from each group by comparing the priority memberships which are calculated by using the grey relation projection method. The validity of the proposed approach is verified by using the modified IEEE 14-bus and 118- bus systems.

From Natural to Artificial Camouflage: Components and Systems

We identify the components of bio-inspired artificial camouflage systems including actuation, sensing, and distributed computation. After summarizing recent results in understanding the physiology and system-level performance of a variety of biological systems, we describe computational algorithms that can generate similar patterns and have the potential for distributed implementation. We find that the existing body of work predominately treats component technology in an isolated manner that precludes a material-like implementation that is scale-free and robust. We conclude with open research challenges towards the realization of integrated camouflage solutions.

Social cognitive optimization with tent map for combined heat and power economic dispatch

Combined heat and power economic dispatch (CHPED) problem is a sophisticated constrained nonlinear optimization problem in a heat and power production system for assigning heat and power production to minimize the production costs. To address this challenging problem, a novel social cognitive optimization algorithm with tent map (TSCO) is presented for solving the CHPED problem. To handle the equality constraints in heat and power balance constraints, adaptive constraints relaxing rule is adopted in constraint processing. The novelty of our work lies in the introduction of a new powerful TSCO algorithm to solve the CHPED issue. The effectiveness and superiority of the presented algorithm is validated by conducting 2 typical CHPED cases. The numerical results show that the proposed approach has better convergence speed and solution quality than all other existing state-of-the-art algorithms.

Application of EOS-ELM with binary Jaya-based feature selection to real-time transient stability assessment using PMU data

Recent studies show that pattern-recognition-based transient stability assessment (PRTSA) is a promising approach for predicting the transient stability status of power systems. However, many of the current well-known PRTSA methods suffer from excessive training time and complex tuning of parameters, resulting in inefficiency for real-time implementation and lacking the online model updating ability. In this paper, a novel PRTSA approach based on an ensemble of OS-extreme learning machine (EOSELM) with binary Jaya (BinJaya)-based feature selection is proposed with the use of phasor measurement units (PMUs) data. After briefly describing the principles of OS-ELM, an EOS-ELM-based PRTSA model is built to predict the post-fault transient stability status of power systems in real time by integrating OS-ELM and an online boosting algorithm, respectively, as a weak classifier and an ensemble learning algorithm. Furthermore, a BinJaya-based feature selection approach is put forward for selecting an optimal feature subset from the entire feature space constituted by a group of system-level classification features extracted from PMU data. The application results on the IEEE 39-bus system and a real provincial system show that the proposal has superior computation speed and prediction accuracy than other state-of-the-art sequential learning algorithms. In addition, without sacrificing the classification performance, the dimension of the input space has been reduced to about one-third of its initial value.

A multifeature fusion approach for power system transient stability assessment using PMU data

Taking full advantage of synchrophasors provided by GPS-based wide-area measurement system (WAMS), a novel VBpMKL-based transient stability assessment (TSA) method through multifeature fusion is proposed in this paper. First, a group of classification features reflecting the transient stability characteristics of power systems are extracted from synchrophasors, and according to the different stages of the disturbance process they are broken into three nonoverlapped subsets; then a VBpMKL-based TSA model is built using multifeature fusion through combining feature spaces corresponding to each feature subset; and finally application of the proposed model to the IEEE 39-bus system and a real-world power system is demonstrated. The novelty of the proposed approach is that it improves the classification accuracy and reliability of TSA using multifeature fusion with synchrophasors. The application results on the test systems verify the effectiveness of the proposal.

Rule extraction based on extreme learning machine and an improved ant-miner algorithm for transient stability assessment

In order to overcome the problems of poor understandability of the pattern recognition-based transient stability assessment (PRTSA) methods, a new rule extraction method based on extreme learning machine (ELM) and an improved Ant-miner (IAM) algorithm is presented in this paper. First, the basic principles of ELM and Ant-miner algorithm are respectively introduced. Then, based on the selected optimal feature subset, an example sample set is generated by the trained ELM-based PRTSA model. And finally, a set of classification rules are obtained by IAM algorithm to replace the original ELM network. The novelty of this proposal is that transient stability rules are extracted from an example sample set generated by the trained ELM-based transient stability assessment model by using IAM algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed method is shown by the application results on the New England 39-bus power system and a practical power system - the southern power system of Hebei province.

Intrinsic magnetic topological insulators in van der Waals layered MnBi$_2$Te$_4$-family materials

The interplay of magnetism and topology is a key research subject in condensed matter physics and material science, which offers great opportunities to explore emerging new physics, like the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect, axion electrodynamics and Majorana fermions. However, these exotic physical effects have rarely been realized in experiment, due to the lacking of suitable working materials. Here we predict that van der Waals layered MnBi$_2$Te$_4$-family materials show two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetism in the single layer and three-dimensional (3D) $A$-type antiferromagnetism in the bulk, which could serve as a next-generation material platform for the state-of-art research. Remarkably, we predict extremely rich topological quantum effects with outstanding features in an experimentally available material MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, including a 3D antiferromagnetic topological insulator with the long-sought topological axion states, the type-II magnetic Weyl semimetal (WSM) with simply one pair of Weyl points, and the high-temperature intrinsic QAH effect. These striking predictions, if proved experimentally, could profoundly transform future research and technology of topological quantum physics.

Online Static Security Assessment of Power Systems Based on Lasso Algorithm

As one important means of ensuring secure operation in a power system, the contingency selection and ranking methods need to be more rapid and accurate. A novel method-based least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) algorithm is proposed in this paper to apply to online static security assessment (OSSA). The assessment is based on a security index, which is applied to select and screen contingencies. Firstly, the multi-step adaptive Lasso (MSA-Lasso) regression algorithm is introduced based on the regression algorithm, whose predictive performance has an advantage. Then, an OSSA module is proposed to evaluate and select contingencies in different load conditions. In addition, the Lasso algorithm is employed to predict the security index of each power system operation state with the consideration of bus voltages and power flows, according to Newton-Raphson load flow (NRLF) analysis in post-contingency states. Finally, the numerical results of applying the proposed approach to the IEEE 14-bus, 118-bus, and 300-bus test systems demonstrate the accuracy and rapidity of OSSA.

Bayesian Hidden Markov Tree Models for Clustering Genes with Shared Evolutionary History

Determination of functions for poorly characterized genes is crucial for understanding biological processes and studying human diseases. Functionally associated genes are often gained and lost together through evolution. Therefore identifying co-evolution of genes can predict functional gene-gene associations. We describe here the full statistical model and computational strategies underlying the original algorithm, CLustering by Inferred Models of Evolution (CLIME 1.0) recently reported by us [Li et al., 2014]. CLIME 1.0 employs a mixture of tree-structured hidden Markov models for gene evolution process, and a Bayesian model-based clustering algorithm to detect gene modules with shared evolutionary histories (termed evolutionary conserved modules, or ECMs). A Dirichlet process prior was adopted for estimating the number of gene clusters and a Gibbs sampler was developed for posterior sampling. We further developed an extended version, CLIME 1.1, to incorporate the uncertainty on the evolutionary tree structure. By simulation studies and benchmarks on real data sets, we show that CLIME 1.0 and CLIME 1.1 outperform traditional methods that use simple metrics (e.g., the Hamming distance or Pearson correlation) to measure co-evolution between pairs of genes.

Optimized Hierarchical Power Oscillations Control for Distributed Generation Under Unbalanced Conditions

Control structures have critical influences on converter-interfaced distributed generations (DG) under unbalanced conditions. Most of previous works focus on suppressing active power oscillations and ripples of DC bus voltage. In this paper, the relationship between amplitudes of the active power oscillations and the reactive power oscillations are firstly deduced and the hierarchical control of DG is proposed to reduce power oscillations. The hierarchical control consists of primary and secondary levels. Current references are generated in primary control level and the active power oscillations can be suppressed by a dual current controller. Secondary control reduces the active power and reactive power oscillations simultaneously by optimal model aiming for minimum amplitudes of oscillations. Simulation results show that the proposed secondary control with less injecting negative-sequence current than traditional control methods can effectively limit both active power and reactive power oscillations.

Feature selection for transient stability assessment based on kernelized fuzzy rough sets and memetic algorithm

A new feature selection method based on kernelized fuzzy rough sets (KFRS) and the memetic algorithm (MA) is proposed for transient stability assessment of power systems. Considering the possible real-time information provided by wide-area measurement systems, a group of system-level classification features are extracted from the power system operation parameters to build the original feature set. By defining a KFRS-based generalized classification function as the separability criterion, the memetic algorithm based on binary differential evolution (BDE) and Tabu search (TS) is employed to obtain the optimal feature subsets with the maximized classification capability. The proposed method may avoid the information loss caused by the feature discretization process of the rough-set based attribute selection, and comprehensively utilize the advantages of BDE and TS to improve the solution quality and search efficiency. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by the application results on the New England 39-bus power system and the southern power system of Hebei province.

Optimal distributed generation planning in active distribution networks considering integration of energy storage

A two-stage optimization method is proposed for optimal distributed generation (DG) planning considering the integration of energy storage in this paper. The first stage determines the installation locations and the initial capacity of DGs using the well-known loss sensitivity factor (LSF) approach, and the second stage identifies the optimal installation capacities of DGs to maximize the investment benefits and system voltage stability and to minimize line losses. In the second stage, the multi-objective ant lion optimizer (MOALO) is first applied to obtain the Pareto-optimal solutions, and then the 'best' compromise solution is identified by calculating the priority memberships of each solution via grey relation projection (GRP) method, while finally, in order to address the uncertain outputs of DGs, energy storage devices are installed whose maximum outputs are determined with the use of chance-constrained programming. The test results on the PG&E 69-bus distribution system demonstrate that the proposed method is superior to other current state-of-the-art approaches, and that the integration of energy storage makes the DGs operate at their pre-designed rated capacities with the probability of at least 60% which is novel.

Two-stage multi-objective OPF for AC/DC grids with VSC-HVDC: Incorporating decisions analysis into optimization process

A two-stage solution approach for solving the problem of multi-objective optimal power flow (MOPF) is proposed for hybrid AC/DC grids with VSC-HVDC. First, a MOPF model for hybrid AC/DC grids is built to coordinate the economy, voltage deviation and environmental benefits. Then, a two-stage solution approach, incorporating decision analysis into optimization process, is presented to solve the model. The first stage of the approach is consisted of a multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm with a hybrid coding scheme employed to find multiple Pareto-optimal solutions. The second stage will have the obtained solutions clustered into different groups using fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering, and then the 'best' compromise solutions are obtained by calculating the priority memberships of the solutions belonging to the same groups via grey relation projection (GRP) method. The novelty of this approach lies primarily in incorporating the FCM-GRP based decisions analysis technique into MOPF studies, thereby assisting decision makers to automatically identify the 'best' operation points. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified based on the test results of the IEEE 14- and 300- bus systems.

A Two-Stage Approach for Combined Heat and Power Economic Emission Dispatch: Combining Multi-Objective Optimization with Integrated Decision Making

To address the problem of combined heat and power economic emission dispatch (CHPEED), a two-stage approach is proposed by combining multi-objective optimization (MOO) with integrated decision making (IDM). First, a practical CHPEED model is built by taking into account power transmission losses and the valve-point loading effects. To solve this model, a two-stage methodology is thereafter proposed. The first stage of this approach relies on the use of a powerful multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, called θ-dominance based evolutionary algorithm (θ-DEA), to find multiple Pareto-optimal solutions of the model. Through fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering, the second stage separates the obtained Pareto-optimal solutions into different clusters and thereupon identifies the best compromise solutions (BCSs) by assessing the relative projections of the solutions belonging to the same cluster using grey relation projection (GRP). The novelty of this work is in the incorporation of an IDM technique FCM-GRP into CHPEED to automatically determine the BCSs that represent decision makers' different, even conflicting, preferences. The simulation results on three test cases with varied complexity levels verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed approach.

Optimal Scheduling of an Isolated Microgrid with Battery Storage Considering Load and Renewable Generation Uncertainties

By modeling the uncertainty of spinning reserves provided by energy storage with probabilistic constraints, a new optimal scheduling mode is proposed for minimizing the operating costs of an isolated microgrid (MG) by using chance-constrained programming. The model is transformed into a readily solvable mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation in GAMS via a proposed discretized step transformation (DST) approach and finally solved by applying the CPLEX solver. By properly setting the confidence levels of the spinning reserve probability constraints, the MG operation can be achieved a trade-off between reliability and economy. The test results on the modified ORNL DECC lab MG test system reveal that the proposal significantly exceeds the commonly used hybrid intelligent algorithm with much better and more stable optimization results and significantly reduced calculation times.

Improved Techniques for Learning to Dehaze and Beyond: A Collective Study

Here we explore two related but important tasks based on the recently released REalistic Single Image DEhazing (RESIDE) benchmark dataset: (i) single image dehazing as a low-level image restoration problem; and (ii) high-level visual understanding (e.g., object detection) of hazy images. For the first task, we investigated a variety of loss functions and show that perception-driven loss significantly improves dehazing performance. In the second task, we provide multiple solutions including using advanced modules in the dehazing-detection cascade and domain-adaptive object detectors. In both tasks, our proposed solutions significantly improve performance. GitHub repository URL is: https://github.com/guanlongzhao/dehaze

Pairwise Sequential Randomization and Its Properties

In comparative studies, such as in causal inference and clinical trials, balancing important covariates is often one of the most important concerns for both efficient and credible comparison. However, chance imbalance still exists in many randomized experiments. This phenomenon of covariate imbalance becomes much more serious as the number of covariates $p$ increases. To address this issue, we introduce a new randomization procedure, called pairwise sequential randomization (PSR). The proposed method allocates the units sequentially and adaptively, using information on the current level of imbalance and the incoming unit's covariate. With a large number of covariates or a large number of units, the proposed method shows substantial advantages over the traditional methods in terms of the covariate balance, estimation accuracy, and computational time, making it an ideal technique in the era of big data. The proposed method attains the optimal covariate balance, in the sense that the estimated treatment effect under the proposed method attains its minimum variance asymptotically. Also the proposed method is widely applicable in both causal inference and clinical trials. Numerical studies and real data analysis provide further evidence of the advantages of the proposed method.
