Learning Agile Swimming: An End-to-End Approach without CPGs

The pursuit of agile and efficient underwater robots, especially bio-mimetic robotic fish, has been impeded by challenges in creating motion controllers that are able to fully exploit their hydrodynamic capabilities. This paper addresses these challenges by introducing a novel, model-free, end-to-end control framework that leverages Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) to enable agile and energy-efficient swimming of robotic fish. Unlike existing methods that rely on predefined trigonometric swimming patterns like Central Pattern Generators (CPG), our approach directly outputs low-level actuator commands without strong constraints, enabling the robotic fish to learn agile swimming behaviors. In addition, by integrating a high-performance Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulator with innovative sim-to-real strategies, such as normalized density calibration and servo response calibration, the proposed framework significantly mitigates the sim-to-real gap, facilitating direct transfer of control policies to real-world environments without fine-tuning. Comparative experiments demonstrate that our method achieves faster swimming speeds, smaller turn-around radii, and reduced energy consumption compared to the state-of-the-art swimming controllers. Furthermore, the proposed framework shows promise in addressing complex tasks, paving the way for more effective deployment of robotic fish in real aquatic environments.

TS-SatMVSNet: Slope Aware Height Estimation for Large-Scale Earth Terrain Multi-view Stereo

3D terrain reconstruction with remote sensing imagery achieves cost-effective and large-scale earth observation and is crucial for safeguarding natural disasters, monitoring ecological changes, and preserving the environment.Recently, learning-based multi-view stereo~(MVS) methods have shown promise in this task. However, these methods simply modify the general learning-based MVS framework for height estimation, which overlooks the terrain characteristics and results in insufficient accuracy. Considering that the Earth's surface generally undulates with no drastic changes and can be measured by slope, integrating slope considerations into MVS frameworks could enhance the accuracy of terrain reconstructions. To this end, we propose an end-to-end slope-aware height estimation network named TS-SatMVSNet for large-scale remote sensing terrain reconstruction. To effectively obtain the slope representation, drawing from mathematical gradient concepts, we innovatively proposed a height-based slope calculation strategy to first calculate a slope map from a height map to measure the terrain undulation. To fully integrate slope information into the MVS pipeline, we separately design two slope-guided modules to enhance reconstruction outcomes at both micro and macro levels. Specifically, at the micro level, we designed a slope-guided interval partition module for refined height estimation using slope values. At the macro level, a height correction module is proposed, using a learnable Gaussian smoothing operator to amend the inaccurate height values. Additionally, to enhance the efficacy of height estimation, we proposed a slope direction loss for implicitly optimizing height estimation results. Extensive experiments on the WHU-TLC dataset and MVS3D dataset show that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance and demonstrates competitive generalization ability.

Unsupervised Domain Adaptive Person Search via Dual Self-Calibration

Unsupervised Domain Adaptive (UDA) person search focuses on employing the model trained on a labeled source domain dataset to a target domain dataset without any additional annotations. Most effective UDA person search methods typically utilize the ground truth of the source domain and pseudo-labels derived from clustering during the training process for domain adaptation. However, the performance of these approaches will be significantly restricted by the disrupting pseudo-labels resulting from inter-domain disparities. In this paper, we propose a Dual Self-Calibration (DSCA) framework for UDA person search that effectively eliminates the interference of noisy pseudo-labels by considering both the image-level and instance-level features perspectives. Specifically, we first present a simple yet effective Perception-Driven Adaptive Filter (PDAF) to adaptively predict a dynamic filter threshold based on input features. This threshold assists in eliminating noisy pseudo-boxes and other background interference, allowing our approach to focus on foreground targets and avoid indiscriminate domain adaptation. Besides, we further propose a Cluster Proxy Representation (CPR) module to enhance the update strategy of cluster representation, which mitigates the pollution of clusters from misidentified instances and effectively streamlines the training process for unlabeled target domains. With the above design, our method can achieve state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance on two benchmark datasets, with 80.2% mAP and 81.7% top-1 on the CUHK-SYSU dataset, with 39.9% mAP and 81.6% top-1 on the PRW dataset, which is comparable to or even exceeds the performance of some fully supervised methods. Anchor Learning with Potential Cluster Constraints for Multi-view Clustering

Anchor-based multi-view clustering (MVC) has received extensive attention due to its efficient performance. Existing methods only focus on how to dynamically learn anchors from the original data and simultaneously construct anchor graphs describing the relationships between samples and perform clustering, while ignoring the reality of anchors, i.e., high-quality anchors should be generated uniformly from different clusters of data rather than scattered outside the clusters. To deal with this problem, we propose a noval method termed Anchor Learning with Potential Cluster Constraints for Multi-view Clustering (ALPC) method. Specifically, ALPC first establishes a shared latent semantic module to constrain anchors to be generated from specific clusters, and subsequently, ALPC improves the representativeness and discriminability of anchors by adapting the anchor graph to capture the common clustering center of mass from samples and anchors, respectively. Finally, ALPC combines anchor learning and graph construction into a unified framework for collaborative learning and mutual optimization to improve the clustering performance. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method compared to some state-of-the-art MVC methods. Our source code is available at https://github.com/whbdmu/ALPC.

Enhancing Healthcare Recommendation Systems with a Multimodal LLMs-based MOE Architecture

With the increasing availability of multimodal data, many fields urgently require advanced architectures capable of effectively integrating these diverse data sources to address specific problems. This study proposes a hybrid recommendation model that combines the Mixture of Experts (MOE) framework with large language models to enhance the performance of recommendation systems in the healthcare domain. We built a small dataset for recommending healthy food based on patient descriptions and evaluated the model's performance on several key metrics, including Precision, Recall, NDCG, and MAP@5. The experimental results show that the hybrid model outperforms the baseline models, which use MOE or large language models individually, in terms of both accuracy and personalized recommendation effectiveness. The paper finds image data provided relatively limited improvement in the performance of the personalized recommendation system, particularly in addressing the cold start problem. Then, the issue of reclassification of images also affected the recommendation results, especially when dealing with low-quality images or changes in the appearance of items, leading to suboptimal performance. The findings provide valuable insights into the development of powerful, scalable, and high-performance recommendation systems, advancing the application of personalized recommendation technologies in real-world domains such as healthcare.

Navigating Towards Fairness with Data Selection

Machine learning algorithms often struggle to eliminate inherent data biases, particularly those arising from unreliable labels, which poses a significant challenge in ensuring fairness. Existing fairness techniques that address label bias typically involve modifying models and intervening in the training process, but these lack flexibility for large-scale datasets. To address this limitation, we introduce a data selection method designed to efficiently and flexibly mitigate label bias, tailored to more practical needs. Our approach utilizes a zero-shot predictor as a proxy model that simulates training on a clean holdout set. This strategy, supported by peer predictions, ensures the fairness of the proxy model and eliminates the need for an additional holdout set, which is a common requirement in previous methods. Without altering the classifier's architecture, our modality-agnostic method effectively selects appropriate training data and has proven efficient and effective in handling label bias and improving fairness across diverse datasets in experimental evaluations.

PopSweeper: Automatically Detecting and Resolving App-Blocking Pop-Ups to Assist Automated Mobile GUI Testing

Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) are the primary means by which users interact with mobile applications, making them crucial to both app functionality and user experience. However, a major challenge in automated testing is the frequent appearance of app-blocking pop-ups, such as ads or system alerts, which obscure critical UI elements and disrupt test execution, often requiring manual intervention. These interruptions lead to inaccurate test results, increased testing time, and reduced reliability, particularly for stakeholders conducting large-scale app testing. To address this issue, we introduce PopSweeper, a novel tool designed to detect and resolve app-blocking pop-ups in real-time during automated GUI testing. PopSweeper combines deep learning-based computer vision techniques for pop-up detection and close button localization, allowing it to autonomously identify pop-ups and ensure uninterrupted testing. We evaluated PopSweeper on over 72K app screenshots from the RICO dataset and 87 top-ranked mobile apps collected from app stores, manually identifying 832 app-blocking pop-ups. PopSweeper achieved 91.7% precision and 93.5% recall in pop-up classification and 93.9% BoxAP with 89.2% recall in close button detection. Furthermore, end-to-end evaluations demonstrated that PopSweeper successfully resolved blockages in 87.1% of apps with minimal overhead, achieving classification and close button detection within 60 milliseconds per frame. These results highlight PopSweeper's capability to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of automated GUI testing by mitigating pop-up interruptions.

Emotion-aware Personalized Music Recommendation with a Heterogeneity-aware Deep Bayesian Network

Music recommender systems play a critical role in music streaming platforms by providing users with music that they are likely to enjoy. Recent studies have shown that user emotions can influence users' preferences for music moods. However, existing emotion-aware music recommender systems (EMRSs) explicitly or implicitly assume that users' actual emotional states expressed through identical emotional words are homogeneous. They also assume that users' music mood preferences are homogeneous under the same emotional state. In this article, we propose four types of heterogeneity that an EMRS should account for: emotion heterogeneity across users, emotion heterogeneity within a user, music mood preference heterogeneity across users, and music mood preference heterogeneity within a user. We further propose a Heterogeneity-aware Deep Bayesian Network (HDBN) to model these assumptions. The HDBN mimics a user's decision process of choosing music with four components: personalized prior user emotion distribution modeling, posterior user emotion distribution modeling, user grouping, and Bayesian neural network-based music mood preference prediction. We constructed two datasets, called EmoMusicLJ and EmoMusicLJ-small, to validate our method. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms baseline approaches on metrics of HR, Precision, NDCG, and MRR. Ablation studies and case studies further validate the effectiveness of our HDBN. The source code and datasets are available at https://github.com/jingrk/HDBN.

Chain of Attack: On the Robustness of Vision-Language Models Against Transfer-Based Adversarial Attacks

Pre-trained vision-language models (VLMs) have showcased remarkable performance in image and natural language understanding, such as image captioning and response generation. As the practical applications of vision-language models become increasingly widespread, their potential safety and robustness issues raise concerns that adversaries may evade the system and cause these models to generate toxic content through malicious attacks. Therefore, evaluating the robustness of open-source VLMs against adversarial attacks has garnered growing attention, with transfer-based attacks as a representative black-box attacking strategy. However, most existing transfer-based attacks neglect the importance of the semantic correlations between vision and text modalities, leading to sub-optimal adversarial example generation and attack performance. To address this issue, we present Chain of Attack (CoA), which iteratively enhances the generation of adversarial examples based on the multi-modal semantic update using a series of intermediate attacking steps, achieving superior adversarial transferability and efficiency. A unified attack success rate computing method is further proposed for automatic evasion evaluation. Extensive experiments conducted under the most realistic and high-stakes scenario, demonstrate that our attacking strategy can effectively mislead models to generate targeted responses using only black-box attacks without any knowledge of the victim models. The comprehensive robustness evaluation in our paper provides insight into the vulnerabilities of VLMs and offers a reference for the safety considerations of future model developments.

Unveiling Hidden Details: A RAW Data-Enhanced Paradigm for Real-World Super-Resolution

Real-world image super-resolution (Real SR) aims to generate high-fidelity, detail-rich high-resolution (HR) images from low-resolution (LR) counterparts. Existing Real SR methods primarily focus on generating details from the LR RGB domain, often leading to a lack of richness or fidelity in fine details. In this paper, we pioneer the use of details hidden in RAW data to complement existing RGB-only methods, yielding superior outputs. We argue that key image processing steps in Image Signal Processing, such as denoising and demosaicing, inherently result in the loss of fine details in LR images, making LR RAW a valuable information source. To validate this, we present RealSR-RAW, a comprehensive dataset comprising over 10,000 pairs with LR and HR RGB images, along with corresponding LR RAW, captured across multiple smartphones under varying focal lengths and diverse scenes. Additionally, we propose a novel, general RAW adapter to efficiently integrate LR RAW data into existing CNNs, Transformers, and Diffusion-based Real SR models by suppressing the noise contained in LR RAW and aligning its distribution. Extensive experiments demonstrate that incorporating RAW data significantly enhances detail recovery and improves Real SR performance across ten evaluation metrics, including both fidelity and perception-oriented metrics. Our findings open a new direction for the Real SR task, with the dataset and code will be made available to support future research.

Benchmarking PtO and PnO Methods in the Predictive Combinatorial Optimization Regime

Predictive combinatorial optimization, where the parameters of combinatorial optimization (CO) are unknown at the decision-making time, is the precise modeling of many real-world applications, including energy cost-aware scheduling and budget allocation on advertising. Tackling such a problem usually involves a prediction model and a CO solver. These two modules are integrated into the predictive CO pipeline following two design principles: "Predict-then-Optimize (PtO)", which learns predictions by supervised training and subsequently solves CO using predicted coefficients, while the other, named "Predict-and-Optimize (PnO)", directly optimizes towards the ultimate decision quality and claims to yield better decisions than traditional PtO approaches. However, there lacks a systematic benchmark of both approaches, including the specific design choices at the module level, as well as an evaluation dataset that covers representative real-world scenarios. To this end, we develop a modular framework to benchmark 11 existing PtO/PnO methods on 8 problems, including a new industrial dataset for combinatorial advertising that will be released. Our study shows that PnO approaches are better than PtO on 7 out of 8 benchmarks, but there is no silver bullet found for the specific design choices of PnO. A comprehensive categorization of current approaches and integration of typical scenarios are provided under a unified benchmark. Therefore, this paper could serve as a comprehensive benchmark for future PnO approach development and also offer fast prototyping for application-focused development. Exploring Large Language Models for Climate Forecasting

With the increasing impacts of climate change, there is a growing demand for accessible tools that can provide reliable future climate information to support planning, finance, and other decision-making applications. Large language models (LLMs), such as GPT-4, present a promising approach to bridging the gap between complex climate data and the general public, offering a way for non-specialist users to obtain essential climate insights through natural language interaction. However, an essential challenge remains under-explored: evaluating the ability of LLMs to provide accurate and reliable future climate predictions, which is crucial for applications that rely on anticipating climate trends. In this study, we investigate the capability of GPT-4 in predicting rainfall at short-term (15-day) and long-term (12-month) scales. We designed a series of experiments to assess GPT's performance under different conditions, including scenarios with and without expert data inputs. Our results indicate that GPT, when operating independently, tends to generate conservative forecasts, often reverting to historical averages in the absence of clear trend signals. This study highlights both the potential and challenges of applying LLMs for future climate predictions, providing insights into their integration with climate-related applications and suggesting directions for enhancing their predictive capabilities in the field.

$\text{S}^{3}$Mamba: Arbitrary-Scale Super-Resolution via Scaleable State Space Model

Arbitrary scale super-resolution (ASSR) aims to super-resolve low-resolution images to high-resolution images at any scale using a single model, addressing the limitations of traditional super-resolution methods that are restricted to fixed-scale factors (e.g., $\times2$, $\times4$). The advent of Implicit Neural Representations (INR) has brought forth a plethora of novel methodologies for ASSR, which facilitate the reconstruction of original continuous signals by modeling a continuous representation space for coordinates and pixel values, thereby enabling arbitrary-scale super-resolution. Consequently, the primary objective of ASSR is to construct a continuous representation space derived from low-resolution inputs. However, existing methods, primarily based on CNNs and Transformers, face significant challenges such as high computational complexity and inadequate modeling of long-range dependencies, which hinder their effectiveness in real-world applications. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel arbitrary-scale super-resolution method, called $\text{S}^{3}$Mamba, to construct a scalable continuous representation space. Specifically, we propose a Scalable State Space Model (SSSM) to modulate the state transition matrix and the sampling matrix of step size during the discretization process, achieving scalable and continuous representation modeling with linear computational complexity. Additionally, we propose a novel scale-aware self-attention mechanism to further enhance the network's ability to perceive global important features at different scales, thereby building the $\text{S}^{3}$Mamba to achieve superior arbitrary-scale super-resolution. Extensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world benchmarks demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance and superior generalization capabilities at arbitrary super-resolution scales.

A Powder Diffraction-AI Solution for Crystalline Structure

Determining the atomic-level structure of crystalline solids is critically important across a wide array of scientific disciplines. The challenges associated with obtaining samples suitable for single-crystal diffraction, coupled with the limitations inherent in classical structure determination methods that primarily utilize powder diffraction for most polycrystalline materials, underscore an urgent need to develop alternative approaches for elucidating the structures of commonly encountered crystalline compounds. In this work, we present an artificial intelligence-directed leapfrog model capable of accurately determining the structures of both organic and inorganic-organic hybrid crystalline solids through direct analysis of powder X-ray diffraction data. This model not only offers a comprehensive solution that effectively circumvents issues related to insoluble challenges in conventional structure solution methodologies but also demonstrates applicability to crystal structures across all conceivable space groups. Furthermore, it exhibits notable compatibility with routine powder diffraction data typically generated by standard instruments, featuring rapid data collection and normal resolution levels.

Evaluating Quality of Answers for Retrieval-Augmented Generation: A Strong LLM Is All You Need

We present a comprehensive study of answer quality evaluation in Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) applications using vRAG-Eval, a novel grading system that is designed to assess correctness, completeness, and honesty. We further map the grading of quality aspects aforementioned into a binary score, indicating an accept or reject decision, mirroring the intuitive "thumbs-up" or "thumbs-down" gesture commonly used in chat applications. This approach suits factual business contexts where a clear decision opinion is essential. Our assessment applies vRAG-Eval to two Large Language Models (LLMs), evaluating the quality of answers generated by a vanilla RAG application. We compare these evaluations with human expert judgments and find a substantial alignment between GPT-4's assessments and those of human experts, reaching 83% agreement on accept or reject decisions. This study highlights the potential of LLMs as reliable evaluators in closed-domain, closed-ended settings, particularly when human evaluations require significant resources.

PointNCBW: Towards Dataset Ownership Verification for Point Clouds via Negative Clean-label Backdoor Watermark

Recently, point clouds have been widely used in computer vision, whereas their collection is time-consuming and expensive. As such, point cloud datasets are the valuable intellectual property of their owners and deserve protection. To detect and prevent unauthorized use of these datasets, especially for commercial or open-sourced ones that cannot be sold again or used commercially without permission, we intend to identify whether a suspicious third-party model is trained on our protected dataset under the black-box setting. We achieve this goal by designing a scalable clean-label backdoor-based dataset watermark for point clouds that ensures both effectiveness and stealthiness. Unlike existing clean-label watermark schemes, which are susceptible to the number of categories, our method could watermark samples from all classes instead of only from the target one. Accordingly, it can still preserve high effectiveness even on large-scale datasets with many classes. Specifically, we perturb selected point clouds with non-target categories in both shape-wise and point-wise manners before inserting trigger patterns without changing their labels. The features of perturbed samples are similar to those of benign samples from the target class. As such, models trained on the watermarked dataset will have a distinctive yet stealthy backdoor behavior, i.e., misclassifying samples from the target class whenever triggers appear, since the trained DNNs will treat the inserted trigger pattern as a signal to deny predicting the target label. We also design a hypothesis-test-guided dataset ownership verification based on the proposed watermark. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets are conducted, verifying the effectiveness of our method and its resistance to potential removal methods.

Exploring Parent-Child Perceptions on Safety in Generative AI: Concerns, Mitigation Strategies, and Design Implications

The widespread use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) among teenagers has led to significant misuse and safety concerns. To identify risks and understand parental controls challenges, we conducted a content analysis on Reddit and interviewed 20 participants (seven teenagers and 13 parents). Our study reveals a significant gap in parental awareness of the extensive ways children use GAI, such as interacting with character-based chatbots for emotional support or engaging in virtual relationships. Parents and children report differing perceptions of risks associated with GAI. Parents primarily express concerns about data collection, misinformation, and exposure to inappropriate content. In contrast, teenagers are more concerned about becoming addicted to virtual relationships with GAI, the potential misuse of GAI to spread harmful content in social groups, and the invasion of privacy due to unauthorized use of their personal data in GAI applications. The absence of parental control features on GAI platforms forces parents to rely on system-built controls, manually check histories, share accounts, and engage in active mediation. Despite these efforts, parents struggle to grasp the full spectrum of GAI-related risks and to perform effective real-time monitoring, mediation, and education. We provide design recommendations to improve parent-child communication and enhance the safety of GAI use.
