Energy Storage Sharing Strategy in Distribution Networks Using Bi-level Optimization Approach

In this paper, we address the energy storage management problem in distribution networks from the perspective of an independent energy storage manager (IESM) who aims to realize optimal energy storage sharing with multi-objective optimization, i.e., optimizing the system peak loads and the electricity purchase costs of the distribution company (DisCo) and its customers. To achieve the goal of the IESM, an energy storage sharing strategy is therefore proposed, which allows DisCo and customers to control the assigned energy storage. The strategy is updated day by day according to the system information change. The problem is formulated as a bi-level mathematical model where the upper level model (ULM) seeks for optimal division of energy storage among Disco and customers, and the lower level models (LLMs) represent the minimizations of the electricity purchase costs of DisCo and customers. Further, in order to enhance the computation efficiency, we transform the bi-level model into a single-level mathematical program with equilibrium constraints (MPEC) model and linearize it. Finally, we validate the effectiveness of the strategy and complement our analysis through case studies.

Measurement of the topological Chern number by continuous probing of a qubit subject to a slowly varying Hamiltonian

We analyze a measurement scheme that allows determination of the Berry curvature and the topological Chern number of a Hamiltonian with parameters exploring a two-dimensional closed manifold. Our method uses continuous monitoring of the gradient of the Hamiltonian with respect to one parameter during a quasi-adiabatic quench of the other. Measurement back-action leads to disturbance of the system dynamics, but we show that this can be compensated by a feedback Hamiltonian. As an example, we analyze the implementation with a superconducting qubit subject to time varying, near resonant microwave fields; equivalent to a spin 1/2 particle in a magnetic field.

Circuit QED with qutrit: coupling three or more atoms via virtual photon exchange

We present a model to describe a generic circuit QED system which consists of multiple artificial three-level atoms, namely qutrits, strongly coupled to a cavity mode. When the state transition of the atoms disobey the selection rules the process that does not conserve the number of excitations can happen determinatively. Therefore, we can realize coherent exchange interaction among three or more atoms mediated by the exchange of virtual photons. In addition, we generalize the one cavity mode mediated interactions to the multi-cavity situation, providing a method to entangle atoms located in different cavities. Using experimental feasible parameters, we investigate the dynamics of the model including three cyclic-transition three-level atoms, for which the two lowest-energy levels can be treated as qubits. Hence, we have found that two qubits can jointly exchange excitation with one qubit in a coherent and reversible way. In the whole process, the population in the third level of atoms is negligible and the cavity photon number is far smaller than 1. Our model provides a feasible scheme to couple multiple distant atoms together, which may find applications in quantum information processing.

Open-Category Classification by Adversarial Sample Generation

In real-world classification tasks, it is difficult to collect training samples from all possible categories of the environment. Therefore, when an instance of an unseen class appears in the prediction stage, a robust classifier should be able to tell that it is from an unseen class, instead of classifying it to be any known category. In this paper, adopting the idea of adversarial learning, we propose the ASG framework for open-category classification. ASG generates positive and negative samples of seen categories in the unsupervised manner via an adversarial learning strategy. With the generated samples, ASG then learns to tell seen from unseen in the supervised manner. Experiments performed on several datasets show the effectiveness of ASG.

Topologically-protected refraction of robust kink states in valley photonic crystals

Recently discovered valley photonic crystals (VPCs) mimic many of the unusual properties of two-dimensional gapped valleytronic materials such as bilayer graphene or MoS2. Of the utmost interest to optical communications is their ability to support topologically protected chiral edge (kink) states at the internal domain wall between two VPCs with spectrally overlapping bandgap zones and opposite half-integer valley-Chern indices. We experimentally demonstrate the robustness of the kink states in VPCs that support degenerate transverse-electric-like (TE) and transverse-magnetic-like (TM) topological phases, thus enabling polarization multiplexing in a single topological waveguide. The propagation direction of the kink states is locked to the valleys of the reverse Brave lattice and, therefore, cannot be reversed in the absence of inter-valley scattering. At the intersection between the internal domain wall and the external edge separating the VPCs from free space, the kink states are shown to exhibit >97% out-coupling efficiency into directional free-space beams. This constitutes the first experimental demonstration of meron-like valley-projected topological phases with half-integer valley-Chern indices.

Detecting fractional Josephson effect through $4π$ phase slip

Fractional Josephson effect is a unique character of Majorana Fermions in topological superconductor system. This effect is very difficult to detect experimentally because of the disturbance of quasiparticle poisoning and unwanted couplings in the superconductor. Here, we propose a scheme to probe fractional DC Josephson effect of semiconductor nanowire-based topological Josephson junction through 4π phase slip. By exploiting a topological RF SQUID system we find that the dominant contribution for Josephson coupling comes from the interaction of Majorana Fermions, resulting the resonant tunneling with 4π phase slip. Our calculations with experimentally reachable parameters show that the time scale for detecting the phase slip is two orders of magnitude shorter than the poisoning time of nonequilibrium quasiparticles. Additionally, with a reasonable nanowire length the 4π phase slip could overwhelm the topological trivial 2π phase slip. Our work is meaningful for exploring the effect of modest quantum fluctuations of the phase of the superconductor on the topological system, and provide a new method for quantum information processing.

Anti-Kibble-Zurek behavior of a noisy transverse-field XY chain and its quantum simulation with two-level systems

We study the dynamics of a transverse-field XY chain driven across quantum critical points by noisy control fields. We characterize the defect density as a function of the quench time and the noise strength, and demonstrate that the defect productions for three quench protocols with different scaling exponents exhibit the anti-Kibble-Zurek behavior, whereby slower driving results in more defects. The protocols are quenching through the boundary line between paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases, quenching across the isolated multicritical point and along the gapless line, respectively. We also show that the optimal quench time to minimize defects scales as a universal power law of the noise strength in all the three cases. Furthermore, by using quantum simulation of the quench dynamics in the spin system with well-designed Landau-Zener crossings in pseudo-momentum space, we propose an experimentally feasible scheme to test the predicted anti-Kibble-Zurek behavior of this noisy transverse-field XY chain with two-level systems under controllable fluctuations.

Quantum interference induced by multiple Landau-Zener transitions in a strongly driven rf-SQUID qubit

We irradiated an rf-SQUID qubit with large-amplitude and high frequency electromagnetic field. Population transitions between macroscopic distinctive quantum states due to Landau-Zener transitions at energy-level avoided crossings were observed. The qubit population on the excited states as a function of flux detuning and microwave power exhibits interference patterns. Some novel features are found in the interference and a model based on rate equations can well address the features.

Extensible 3D architecture for superconducting quantum computing

Using a multi-layered printed circuit board, we propose a 3D architecture suitable for packaging supercon- ducting chips, especially chips that contain two-dimensional qubit arrays. In our proposed architecture, the center strips of the buried coplanar waveguides protrude from the surface of a dielectric layer as contacts. Since the contacts extend beyond the surface of the dielectric layer, chips can simply be flip-chip packaged with on-chip receptacles clinging to the contacts. Using this scheme, we packaged a multi-qubit chip and per- formed single-qubit and two-qubit quantum gate operations. The results indicate that this 3D architecture provides a promising scheme for scalable quantum computing.

Probing the Hydrogen Enhanced Near-Field Emission of ITO without a Vacuum-Gap

Thermal fluctuations of charged particles, fluctuations akin to Brownian motion, can excite optical surface-states leading to the concept of the thermal near-field, which is a highly localized, and, therefore, evanescent optical density of states that exist at distances much less than the thermal emission wavelength. By tunneling the surface charge emitted photons into nearby waveguides, the thermally excitable near-field optical density of states can be enhanced, engineered, and efficiently extracted to the far-field for observation. With this technique, the plasmonic thermal near-field of a 10nm thick ITO film, known to have plasmonic activity in the 1500nm wavelength region, was probed under external illumination and by thermal excitation at 873K. The results confirm that waveguides provide a large density of optical channels with spatial overlap and k-vector matching to facilitate plasmon de-excitation in the near-field through photon tunneling for extraction into the far-field. Furthermore, it is shown that the thermal near-field can be observed without the introduction of a vacuum-gap, a feature unique to this particular method.

Realizing and manipulating space-time inversion symmetric topological semimetal bands with superconducting quantum circuits

We have experimentally realized novel space-time inversion (P-T) invariant Z2-type topological semimetal-bands, via an analogy between the momentum space and a controllable parameter space in superconducting quantum circuits. By measuring the whole energy spectrum of system, we imaged clearly an exotic tunable gapless band structure of topological semimetals. Two topological quantum phase transitions from a topological semimetal to two kinds of insulators can be manipulated by continuously tuning the different parameters in the experimental setup, one of which captures the Z2 topology of the PT semimetal via merging a pair of nontrivial Z2 Dirac points. Remarkably, the topological robustness was demonstrated unambiguously, by adding a perturbation that breaks only the individual T and P symmetries but keeps the joint PT symmetry. In contrast, when another kind of PT -violated perturbation is introduced, a topologically trivial insulator gap is fully opened.

End-to-End Answer Chunk Extraction and Ranking for Reading Comprehension

This paper proposes dynamic chunk reader (DCR), an end-to-end neural reading comprehension (RC) model that is able to extract and rank a set of answer candidates from a given document to answer questions. DCR is able to predict answers of variable lengths, whereas previous neural RC models primarily focused on predicting single tokens or entities. DCR encodes a document and an input question with recurrent neural networks, and then applies a word-by-word attention mechanism to acquire question-aware representations for the document, followed by the generation of chunk representations and a ranking module to propose the top-ranked chunk as the answer. Experimental results show that DCR achieves state-of-the-art exact match and F1 scores on the SQuAD dataset.

Exciting Reflectionless Unidirectional Edge Modes in a Reciprocal Photonic Topological Insulator Medium

Photonic topological insulators are an interesting class of materials whose photonic band structure can have a bandgap in the bulk while supporting topologically protected unidirectional edge modes. Recent studies [1-6] on bianisotropic metamaterials that emulate the electronic quantum spin Hall effect using its electromagnetic analog are examples of such systems with relatively simple and elegant design. In this paper, we present a rotating magnetic dipole antenna, composed of two perpendicularly oriented coils, that can efficiently excite the unidirectional topologically protected surface waves in the bianisotropic metawaveguide (BMW) structure recently realized by Ma, et al. [1], despite the fact that the BMW medium does not break time-reversal invariance. In addition to achieving high directivity, the antenna can be tuned continuously to excite reflectionless edge modes to the two opposite directions with various amplitude ratios. We demonstrate its performance through experiment and compare to simulation results.

Economic information from Smart Meter: Nexus Between Demand Profile and Electricity Retail Price Between Demand Profile and Electricity Retail Price

In this paper, we demonstrate that a consumer's marginal system impact is only determined by their demand profile rather than their demand level. Demand profile clustering is identical to cluster consumers according to their marginal impacts on system costs. A profile-based uniform-rate price is economically efficient as real-time pricing. We develop a criteria system to evaluate the economic efficiency of an implemented retail price scheme in a distribution system by comparing profile clustering and daily-average clustering. Our criteria system can examine the extent of a retail price scheme's inefficiency even without information about the distribution system's daily cost structure. We analyze data from a real distribution system in China. In this system, targeting each consumer's high-impact days is more efficient than target high-impact consumers.

Confining Windows Inter-Process Communications for OS-Level Virtual Machine

As OS-level virtualization technology usually imposes little overhead on virtual machine start-up and running, it provides an excellent choice for building intrusion/fault tolerant applications that require redundancy and frequent invocation. When developing Windows OS-level virtual machine, however, people will inevitably face the challenge of confining Windows Inter-Process Communications (IPC). As IPC on Windows platform is more complex than UNIX style OS and most of the programs on Windows are not open-source, it is difficult to discover all of the performed IPCs and confine them. In this paper, we propose three general principles to confine IPC on Windows OS and a novel IPC confinement mechanism based on the principles. With the mechanism, for the first time from the literature, we successfully virtualized RPC System Service (RPCSS) and Internet Information Server (IIS) on Feather-weight Virtual Machine (FVM). Experimental results demonstrate that multiple IIS web server instances can simultaneously run on single Windows OS with much less performance overhead than other popular VM technology, offering a good basis for constructing dependable system.

Ultra-small phase estimation via weak measurement technique with postselection

Weak measurement is a novel technique for parameter estimation with higher precision. In this paper we develop a general theory for the parameter estimation based on weak measurement technique with arbitrary postselection. The previous weak value amplification model and the joint weak measurement model are two special cases in our theory. Applying the developed theory, the time-delay estimation is investigated in both theory and experiment. Experimental results shows that when the time-delay is ultra small, the joint weak measurement scheme outperforms the weak value amplification scheme, and is robust against not only the misalignment errors but also the wavelength-dependence of the optical components. These results are consistent with the theoretical predictions that has not been verified by any experiment before.

Molecular dynamics simulation of fabrication of Cu mono-component metallic glass by physical vapor deposition on Zr substrate

In this work, the single-component Cu metallic glass was fabricated by the physical vapor deposition on the Zr (0001) crystal substrate at 100 K using the classical molecular dynamic simulation. The same deposition process was performed on the Cu (1 0 0) and Ni (1 0 0) crystal substrate for comparison, only the Cu crystal deposited layer with the fcc structure can be obtained. When depositing the Cu atoms on the Zr substrate at 300 K, the crystal structure was formed, which indicates that except the suitable substrate, low temperature is also a key factor for the amorphous structure formation. The Cu liquid quenching from 2000 K to 100 K were also simulated with the cooling rate 1012 K/s to form the Cu glass film in this work. The Cu metallic glass from the two different processes (physical vapor deposition and rapid thermal quenching from liquid) revealed the same radial distribution function and X-ray diffraction pattern, but the different microstructure from the coordination number and Voronoi tessellation analysis.

A Lower Bound Analysis of Population-based Evolutionary Algorithms for Pseudo-Boolean Functions

Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are population-based general-purpose optimization algorithms, and have been successfully applied in various real-world optimization tasks. However, previous theoretical studies often employ EAs with only a parent or offspring population and focus on specific problems. Furthermore, they often only show upper bounds on the running time, while lower bounds are also necessary to get a complete understanding of an algorithm. In this paper, we analyze the running time of the ($μ$+$λ$)-EA (a general population-based EA with mutation only) on the class of pseudo-Boolean functions with a unique global optimum. By applying the recently proposed switch analysis approach, we prove the lower bound $Ω(n \ln n+ μ+ λn\ln\ln n/ \ln n)$ for the first time. Particularly on the two widely-studied problems, OneMax and LeadingOnes, the derived lower bound discloses that the ($μ$+$λ$)-EA will be strictly slower than the (1+1)-EA when the population size $μ$ or $λ$ is above a moderate order. Our results imply that the increase of population size, while usually desired in practice, bears the risk of increasing the lower bound of the running time and thus should be carefully considered.
