Bird's-Eye-View Scene Graph for Vision-Language Navigation

Vision-language navigation (VLN), which entails an agent to navigate 3D environments following human instructions, has shown great advances. However, current agents are built upon panoramic observations, which hinders their ability to perceive 3D scene geometry and easily leads to ambiguous selection of panoramic view. To address these limitations, we present a BEV Scene Graph (BSG), which leverages multi-step BEV representations to encode scene layouts and geometric cues of indoor environment under the supervision of 3D detection. During navigation, BSG builds a local BEV representation at each step and maintains a BEV-based global scene map, which stores and organizes all the online collected local BEV representations according to their topological relations. Based on BSG, the agent predicts a local BEV grid-level decision score and a global graph-level decision score, combined with a sub-view selection score on panoramic views, for more accurate action prediction. Our approach significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods on REVERIE, R2R, and R4R, showing the potential of BEV perception in VLN.

DPMix: Mixture of Depth and Point Cloud Video Experts for 4D Action Segmentation

In this technical report, we present our findings from the research conducted on the Human-Object Interaction 4D (HOI4D) dataset for egocentric action segmentation task. As a relatively novel research area, point cloud video methods might not be good at temporal modeling, especially for long point cloud videos (\eg, 150 frames). In contrast, traditional video understanding methods have been well developed. Their effectiveness on temporal modeling has been widely verified on many large scale video datasets. Therefore, we convert point cloud videos into depth videos and employ traditional video modeling methods to improve 4D action segmentation. By ensembling depth and point cloud video methods, the accuracy is significantly improved. The proposed method, named Mixture of Depth and Point cloud video experts (DPMix), achieved the first place in the 4D Action Segmentation Track of the HOI4D Challenge 2023.

Clustering based Point Cloud Representation Learning for 3D Analysis

Point cloud analysis (such as 3D segmentation and detection) is a challenging task, because of not only the irregular geometries of many millions of unordered points, but also the great variations caused by depth, viewpoint, occlusion, etc. Current studies put much focus on the adaption of neural networks to the complex geometries of point clouds, but are blind to a fundamental question: how to learn an appropriate point embedding space that is aware of both discriminative semantics and challenging variations? As a response, we propose a clustering based supervised learning scheme for point cloud analysis. Unlike current de-facto, scene-wise training paradigm, our algorithm conducts within-class clustering on the point embedding space for automatically discovering subclass patterns which are latent yet representative across scenes. The mined patterns are, in turn, used to repaint the embedding space, so as to respect the underlying distribution of the entire training dataset and improve the robustness to the variations. Our algorithm is principled and readily pluggable to modern point cloud segmentation networks during training, without extra overhead during testing. With various 3D network architectures (i.e., voxel-based, point-based, Transformer-based, automatically searched), our algorithm shows notable improvements on famous point cloud segmentation datasets (i.e.,2.0-2.6% on single-scan and 2.0-2.2% multi-scan of SemanticKITTI, 1.8-1.9% on S3DIS, in terms of mIoU). Our algorithm also demonstrates utility in 3D detection, showing 2.0-3.4% mAP gains on KITTI.

Kefa: A Knowledge Enhanced and Fine-grained Aligned Speaker for Navigation Instruction Generation

We introduce a novel speaker model \textsc{Kefa} for navigation instruction generation. The existing speaker models in Vision-and-Language Navigation suffer from the large domain gap of vision features between different environments and insufficient temporal grounding capability. To address the challenges, we propose a Knowledge Refinement Module to enhance the feature representation with external knowledge facts, and an Adaptive Temporal Alignment method to enforce fine-grained alignment between the generated instructions and the observation sequences. Moreover, we propose a new metric SPICE-D for navigation instruction evaluation, which is aware of the correctness of direction phrases. The experimental results on R2R and UrbanWalk datasets show that the proposed KEFA speaker achieves state-of-the-art instruction generation performance for both indoor and outdoor scenes.

Tachikuma: Understading Complex Interactions with Multi-Character and Novel Objects by Large Language Models

Recent advancements in natural language and Large Language Models (LLMs) have enabled AI agents to simulate human-like interactions within virtual worlds. However, these interactions still face limitations in complexity and flexibility, particularly in scenarios involving multiple characters and novel objects. Pre-defining all interactable objects in the agent's world model presents challenges, and conveying implicit intentions to multiple characters through complex interactions remains difficult. To address these issues, we propose integrating virtual Game Masters (GMs) into the agent's world model, drawing inspiration from Tabletop Role-Playing Games (TRPGs). GMs play a crucial role in overseeing information, estimating players' intentions, providing environment descriptions, and offering feedback, compensating for current world model deficiencies. To facilitate future explorations for complex interactions, we introduce a benchmark named Tachikuma, comprising a Multiple character and novel Object based interaction Estimation (MOE) task and a supporting dataset. MOE challenges models to understand characters' intentions and accurately determine their actions within intricate contexts involving multi-character and novel object interactions. Besides, the dataset captures log data from real-time communications during gameplay, providing diverse, grounded, and complex interactions for further explorations. Finally, we present a simple prompting baseline and evaluate its performance, demonstrating its effectiveness in enhancing interaction understanding. We hope that our dataset and task will inspire further research in complex interactions with natural language, fostering the development of more advanced AI agents.

TransHuman: A Transformer-based Human Representation for Generalizable Neural Human Rendering

In this paper, we focus on the task of generalizable neural human rendering which trains conditional Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) from multi-view videos of different characters. To handle the dynamic human motion, previous methods have primarily used a SparseConvNet (SPC)-based human representation to process the painted SMPL. However, such SPC-based representation i) optimizes under the volatile observation space which leads to the pose-misalignment between training and inference stages, and ii) lacks the global relationships among human parts that is critical for handling the incomplete painted SMPL. Tackling these issues, we present a brand-new framework named TransHuman, which learns the painted SMPL under the canonical space and captures the global relationships between human parts with transformers. Specifically, TransHuman is mainly composed of Transformer-based Human Encoding (TransHE), Deformable Partial Radiance Fields (DPaRF), and Fine-grained Detail Integration (FDI). TransHE first processes the painted SMPL under the canonical space via transformers for capturing the global relationships between human parts. Then, DPaRF binds each output token with a deformable radiance field for encoding the query point under the observation space. Finally, the FDI is employed to further integrate fine-grained information from reference images. Extensive experiments on ZJU-MoCap and H36M show that our TransHuman achieves a significantly new state-of-the-art performance with high efficiency. Three Dimensional Imaging using Coherent X-Rays at Grazing Incidence Geometry

We have developed a 3 dimensional Coherent Diffraction Imaging (CDI) algorithm to retrieve phases of diffraction patterns of samples in Grazing Incidence Small Angle X-ray Scattering (GISAXS) experiments. The algorithm interprets the diffraction patterns using the Distorted-Wave Born Approximation (DWBA) instead of the Born Approximation (BA), as in this case the existence of a reflected beam from the substrate causes the diffraction pattern to deviate significantly from the simple Fourier transform of the object. Detailed computer simulations show that the algorithm works. Verification with real experiments is planned.

ZJU ReLER Submission for EPIC-KITCHEN Challenge 2023: Semi-Supervised Video Object Segmentation

The Associating Objects with Transformers (AOT) framework has exhibited exceptional performance in a wide range of complex scenarios for video object segmentation. In this study, we introduce MSDeAOT, a variant of the AOT series that incorporates transformers at multiple feature scales. Leveraging the hierarchical Gated Propagation Module (GPM), MSDeAOT efficiently propagates object masks from previous frames to the current frame using a feature scale with a stride of 16. Additionally, we employ GPM in a more refined feature scale with a stride of 8, leading to improved accuracy in detecting and tracking small objects. Through the implementation of test-time augmentations and model ensemble techniques, we achieve the top-ranking position in the EPIC-KITCHEN VISOR Semi-supervised Video Object Segmentation Challenge.

ZJU ReLER Submission for EPIC-KITCHEN Challenge 2023: TREK-150 Single Object Tracking

The Associating Objects with Transformers (AOT) framework has exhibited exceptional performance in a wide range of complex scenarios for video object tracking and segmentation. In this study, we convert the bounding boxes to masks in reference frames with the help of the Segment Anything Model (SAM) and Alpha-Refine, and then propagate the masks to the current frame, transforming the task from Video Object Tracking (VOT) to video object segmentation (VOS). Furthermore, we introduce MSDeAOT, a variant of the AOT series that incorporates transformers at multiple feature scales. MSDeAOT efficiently propagates object masks from previous frames to the current frame using two feature scales of 16 and 8. As a testament to the effectiveness of our design, we achieved the 1st place in the EPIC-KITCHENS TREK-150 Object Tracking Challenge.

Gravitational ringing and superradiant instabilities of the Kerr-like black holes in a dark matter halo

Supermassive black holes from the center of galaxy may be immersed in a dark matter halo. This dark matter halo may form a "cusp" structure around the black hole and disappear at a certain distance from the black hole. Based on this interesting physical background, we use the continued fraction method to study gravitational ringring of the Kerr-like black holes immersed in a dark matter halo, i.e., quasinormal modes (QNM) and quasibound states (QBS). We consider these gravitational ringring of black holes both in cold dark matter (CDM) model and scalar field dark matter (SFDM) model at the LSB galaxy, and compare them with Kerr black hole. By testing the states of QNM/QBS frequencies with different parameters $l,m,a$, we confirm the existence of the superradiant instabilities when the black holes both in CDM model and SFDM model. Besides, we also study the impacts of dark matter parameters on the QNM/QBS of black holes at the specific circumstances. In the future, these results may be used for gravitational wave detection of supermassive black holes, and may provide an effective method for detecting the existence of dark matter.

Stroke Extraction of Chinese Character Based on Deep Structure Deformable Image Registration

Stroke extraction of Chinese characters plays an important role in the field of character recognition and generation. The most existing character stroke extraction methods focus on image morphological features. These methods usually lead to errors of cross strokes extraction and stroke matching due to rarely using stroke semantics and prior information. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based character stroke extraction method that takes semantic features and prior information of strokes into consideration. This method consists of three parts: image registration-based stroke registration that establishes the rough registration of the reference strokes and the target as prior information; image semantic segmentation-based stroke segmentation that preliminarily separates target strokes into seven categories; and high-precision extraction of single strokes. In the stroke registration, we propose a structure deformable image registration network to achieve structure-deformable transformation while maintaining the stable morphology of single strokes for character images with complex structures. In order to verify the effectiveness of the method, we construct two datasets respectively for calligraphy characters and regular handwriting characters. The experimental results show that our method strongly outperforms the baselines. Code is available at https://github.com/MengLi-l1/StrokeExtraction.

Co-Learning Meets Stitch-Up for Noisy Multi-label Visual Recognition

In real-world scenarios, collected and annotated data often exhibit the characteristics of multiple classes and long-tailed distribution. Additionally, label noise is inevitable in large-scale annotations and hinders the applications of learning-based models. Although many deep learning based methods have been proposed for handling long-tailed multi-label recognition or label noise respectively, learning with noisy labels in long-tailed multi-label visual data has not been well-studied because of the complexity of long-tailed distribution entangled with multi-label correlation. To tackle such a critical yet thorny problem, this paper focuses on reducing noise based on some inherent properties of multi-label classification and long-tailed learning under noisy cases. In detail, we propose a Stitch-Up augmentation to synthesize a cleaner sample, which directly reduces multi-label noise by stitching up multiple noisy training samples. Equipped with Stitch-Up, a Heterogeneous Co-Learning framework is further designed to leverage the inconsistency between long-tailed and balanced distributions, yielding cleaner labels for more robust representation learning with noisy long-tailed data. To validate our method, we build two challenging benchmarks, named VOC-MLT-Noise and COCO-MLT-Noise, respectively. Extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. Compared to a variety of baselines, our method achieves superior results.

Video Object Segmentation in Panoptic Wild Scenes

In this paper, we introduce semi-supervised video object segmentation (VOS) to panoptic wild scenes and present a large-scale benchmark as well as a baseline method for it. Previous benchmarks for VOS with sparse annotations are not sufficient to train or evaluate a model that needs to process all possible objects in real-world scenarios. Our new benchmark (VIPOSeg) contains exhaustive object annotations and covers various real-world object categories which are carefully divided into subsets of thing/stuff and seen/unseen classes for comprehensive evaluation. Considering the challenges in panoptic VOS, we propose a strong baseline method named panoptic object association with transformers (PAOT), which uses panoptic identification to associate objects with a pyramid architecture on multiple scales. Experimental results show that VIPOSeg can not only boost the performance of VOS models by panoptic training but also evaluate them comprehensively in panoptic scenes. Previous methods for classic VOS still need to improve in performance and efficiency when dealing with panoptic scenes, while our PAOT achieves SOTA performance with good efficiency on VIPOSeg and previous VOS benchmarks. PAOT also ranks 1st in the VOT2022 challenge. Our dataset is available at https://github.com/yoxu515/VIPOSeg-Benchmark.

Enhancing Dynamic Image Advertising with Vision-Language Pre-training

In the multimedia era, image is an effective medium in search advertising. Dynamic Image Advertising (DIA), a system that matches queries with ad images and generates multimodal ads, is introduced to improve user experience and ad revenue. The core of DIA is a query-image matching module performing ad image retrieval and relevance modeling. Current query-image matching suffers from limited and inconsistent data, and insufficient cross-modal interaction. Also, the separate optimization of retrieval and relevance models affects overall performance. To address this issue, we propose a vision-language framework consisting of two parts. First, we train a base model on large-scale image-text pairs to learn general multimodal representation. Then, we fine-tune the base model on advertising business data, unifying relevance modeling and retrieval through multi-objective learning. Our framework has been implemented in Baidu search advertising system "Phoneix Nest". Online evaluation shows that it improves cost per mille (CPM) and click-through rate (CTR) by 1.04% and 1.865%.

Shuffled Autoregression For Motion Interpolation

This work aims to provide a deep-learning solution for the motion interpolation task. Previous studies solve it with geometric weight functions. Some other works propose neural networks for different problem settings with consecutive pose sequences as input. However, motion interpolation is a more complex problem that takes isolated poses (e.g., only one start pose and one end pose) as input. When applied to motion interpolation, these deep learning methods have limited performance since they do not leverage the flexible dependencies between interpolation frames as the original geometric formulas do. To realize this interpolation characteristic, we propose a novel framework, referred to as \emph{Shuffled AutoRegression}, which expands the autoregression to generate in arbitrary (shuffled) order and models any inter-frame dependencies as a directed acyclic graph. We further propose an approach to constructing a particular kind of dependency graph, with three stages assembled into an end-to-end spatial-temporal motion Transformer. Experimental results on one of the current largest datasets show that our model generates vivid and coherent motions from only one start frame to one end frame and outperforms competing methods by a large margin. The proposed model is also extensible to multiple keyframes' motion interpolation tasks and other areas' interpolation.

Whitening-based Contrastive Learning of Sentence Embeddings

This paper presents a whitening-based contrastive learning method for sentence embedding learning (WhitenedCSE), which combines contrastive learning with a novel shuffled group whitening. Generally, contrastive learning pulls distortions of a single sample (i.e., positive samples) close and push negative samples far away, correspondingly facilitating the alignment and uniformity in the feature space. A popular alternative to the "pushing'' operation is whitening the feature space, which scatters all the samples for uniformity. Since the whitening and the contrastive learning have large redundancy w.r.t. the uniformity, they are usually used separately and do not easily work together. For the first time, this paper integrates whitening into the contrastive learning scheme and facilitates two benefits. 1) Better uniformity. We find that these two approaches are not totally redundant but actually have some complementarity due to different uniformity mechanism. 2) Better alignment. We randomly divide the feature into multiple groups along the channel axis and perform whitening independently within each group. By shuffling the group division, we derive multiple distortions of a single sample and thus increase the positive sample diversity. Consequently, using multiple positive samples with enhanced diversity further improves contrastive learning due to better alignment. Extensive experiments on seven semantic textual similarity tasks show our method achieves consistent improvement over the contrastive learning baseline and sets new states of the art, e.g., 78.78\% (+2.53\% based on BERT\ba) Spearman correlation on STS tasks.

A Feature Reuse Framework with Texture-adaptive Aggregation for Reference-based Super-Resolution

Reference-based super-resolution (RefSR) has gained considerable success in the field of super-resolution with the addition of high-resolution reference images to reconstruct low-resolution (LR) inputs with more high-frequency details, thereby overcoming some limitations of single image super-resolution (SISR). Previous research in the field of RefSR has mostly focused on two crucial aspects. The first is accurate correspondence matching between the LR and the reference (Ref) image. The second is the effective transfer and aggregation of similar texture information from the Ref images. Nonetheless, an important detail of perceptual loss and adversarial loss has been underestimated, which has a certain adverse effect on texture transfer and reconstruction. In this study, we propose a feature reuse framework that guides the step-by-step texture reconstruction process through different stages, reducing the negative impacts of perceptual and adversarial loss. The feature reuse framework can be used for any RefSR model, and several RefSR approaches have improved their performance after being retrained using our framework. Additionally, we introduce a single image feature embedding module and a texture-adaptive aggregation module. The single image feature embedding module assists in reconstructing the features of the LR inputs itself and effectively lowers the possibility of including irrelevant textures. The texture-adaptive aggregation module dynamically perceives and aggregates texture information between the LR inputs and the Ref images using dynamic filters. This enhances the utilization of the reference texture while reducing reference misuse. The source code is available at https://github.com/Yi-Yang355/FRFSR.
