Divide and Rule: Recurrent Partitioned Network for Dynamic Processes

In general, many dynamic processes are involved with interacting variables, from physical systems to sociological analysis. The interplay of components in the system can give rise to confounding dynamic behavior. Many approaches model temporal sequences holistically ignoring the internal interaction which are impotent in capturing the protogenic actuation. Differently, our goal is to represent a system with a part-whole hierarchy and discover the implied dependencies among intra-system variables: inferring the interactions that possess causal effects on the sub-system behavior with REcurrent partItioned Network (REIN). The proposed architecture consists of (i) a perceptive module that extracts a hierarchical and temporally consistent representation of the observation at multiple levels, (ii) a deductive module for determining the relational connection between neurons at each level, and (iii) a statistical module that can predict the future by conditioning on the temporal distributional estimation. Our model is demonstrated to be effective in identifying the componential interactions with limited observation and stable in long-term future predictions experimented with diverse physical systems.

Prior-Enhanced Few-Shot Segmentation with Meta-Prototypes

Few-shot segmentation~(FSS) performance has been extensively promoted by introducing episodic training and class-wise prototypes. However, the FSS problem remains challenging due to three limitations: (1) Models are distracted by task-unrelated information; (2) The representation ability of a single prototype is limited; (3) Class-related prototypes ignore the prior knowledge of base classes. We propose the Prior-Enhanced network with Meta-Prototypes to tackle these limitations. The prior-enhanced network leverages the support and query (pseudo-) labels in feature extraction, which guides the model to focus on the task-related features of the foreground objects, and suppress much noise due to the lack of supervised knowledge. Moreover, we introduce multiple meta-prototypes to encode hierarchical features and learn class-agnostic structural information. The hierarchical features help the model highlight the decision boundary and focus on hard pixels, and the structural information learned from base classes is treated as the prior knowledge for novel classes. Experiments show that our method achieves the mean-IoU scores of 60.79% and 41.16% on PASCAL-$5^i$ and COCO-$20^i$, outperforming the state-of-the-art method by 3.49% and 5.64% in the 5-shot setting. Moreover, comparing with 1-shot results, our method promotes 5-shot accuracy by 3.73% and 10.32% on the above two benchmarks. The source code of our method is available at https://github.com/Jarvis73/PEMP.

Connecting Language and Vision for Natural Language-Based Vehicle Retrieval

Vehicle search is one basic task for the efficient traffic management in terms of the AI City. Most existing practices focus on the image-based vehicle matching, including vehicle re-identification and vehicle tracking. In this paper, we apply one new modality, i.e., the language description, to search the vehicle of interest and explore the potential of this task in the real-world scenario. The natural language-based vehicle search poses one new challenge of fine-grained understanding of both vision and language modalities. To connect language and vision, we propose to jointly train the state-of-the-art vision models with the transformer-based language model in an end-to-end manner. Except for the network structure design and the training strategy, several optimization objectives are also re-visited in this work. The qualitative and quantitative experiments verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Our proposed method has achieved the 1st place on the 5th AI City Challenge, yielding competitive performance 18.69% MRR accuracy on the private test set. We hope this work can pave the way for the future study on using language description effectively and efficiently for real-world vehicle retrieval systems. The code will be available at https://github.com/ShuaiBai623/AIC2021-T5-CLV.

VidFace: A Full-Transformer Solver for Video FaceHallucination with Unaligned Tiny Snapshots

In this paper, we investigate the task of hallucinating an authentic high-resolution (HR) human face from multiple low-resolution (LR) video snapshots. We propose a pure transformer-based model, dubbed VidFace, to fully exploit the full-range spatio-temporal information and facial structure cues among multiple thumbnails. Specifically, VidFace handles multiple snapshots all at once and harnesses the spatial and temporal information integrally to explore face alignments across all the frames, thus avoiding accumulating alignment errors. Moreover, we design a recurrent position embedding module to equip our transformer with facial priors, which not only effectively regularises the alignment mechanism but also supplants notorious pre-training. Finally, we curate a new large-scale video face hallucination dataset from the public Voxceleb2 benchmark, which challenges prior arts on tackling unaligned and tiny face snapshots. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first attempt to develop a unified transformer-based solver tailored for video-based face hallucination. Extensive experiments on public video face benchmarks show that the proposed method significantly outperforms the state of the arts.

Joint Discriminative and Generative Learning for Person Re-identification

Person re-identification (re-id) remains challenging due to significant intra-class variations across different cameras. Recently, there has been a growing interest in using generative models to augment training data and enhance the invariance to input changes. The generative pipelines in existing methods, however, stay relatively separate from the discriminative re-id learning stages. Accordingly, re-id models are often trained in a straightforward manner on the generated data. In this paper, we seek to improve learned re-id embeddings by better leveraging the generated data. To this end, we propose a joint learning framework that couples re-id learning and data generation end-to-end. Our model involves a generative module that separately encodes each person into an appearance code and a structure code, and a discriminative module that shares the appearance encoder with the generative module. By switching the appearance or structure codes, the generative module is able to generate high-quality cross-id composed images, which are online fed back to the appearance encoder and used to improve the discriminative module. The proposed joint learning framework renders significant improvement over the baseline without using generated data, leading to the state-of-the-art performance on several benchmark datasets.

Collaborative Video Object Segmentation by Multi-Scale Foreground-Background Integration

This paper investigates the principles of embedding learning to tackle the challenging semi-supervised video object segmentation. Unlike previous practices that focus on exploring the embedding learning of foreground object (s), we consider background should be equally treated. Thus, we propose a Collaborative video object segmentation by Foreground-Background Integration (CFBI) approach. CFBI separates the feature embedding into the foreground object region and its corresponding background region, implicitly promoting them to be more contrastive and improving the segmentation results accordingly. Moreover, CFBI performs both pixel-level matching processes and instance-level attention mechanisms between the reference and the predicted sequence, making CFBI robust to various object scales. Based on CFBI, we introduce a multi-scale matching structure and propose an Atrous Matching strategy, resulting in a more robust and efficient framework, CFBI+. We conduct extensive experiments on two popular benchmarks, i.e., DAVIS and YouTube-VOS. Without applying any simulated data for pre-training, our CFBI+ achieves the performance (J&F) of 82.9% and 82.8%, outperforming all the other state-of-the-art methods. CKP hierarchy and free Bosons

In this paper, free Bosons are used to study some integrable properties of the CKP hierarchy, from the aspects of tau functions. Firstly, the modified CKP hierarchy is constructed by using free Bosons and the corresponding Lax structure is given. Then the constrained CKP hierarchy is found to be related with the modified CKP hierarchy, and the corresponding solutions are derived by using free Bosons. Next by using the relations between the Darboux transformations and the squared eigenfunction symmetries, we express the Darboux transformations of the CKP hierarchy in terms of free Bosons, by which one can better understand the essential of the CKP Darboux transformations. In particular, the additional symmetries of the CKP hierarchy can be viewed as the infinitesimal generator of the CKP Darboux transformations. Based upon these results, we finally obtain the actions of the CKP additional symmetries on the CKP tau functions constructed by free Bosons.

Point Adversarial Self Mining: A Simple Method for Facial Expression Recognition

In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective approach, named Point Adversarial Self Mining (PASM), to improve the recognition accuracy in facial expression recognition. Unlike previous works focusing on designing specific architectures or loss functions to solve this problem, PASM boosts the network capability by simulating human learning processes: providing updated learning materials and guidance from more capable teachers. Specifically, to generate new learning materials, PASM leverages a point adversarial attack method and a trained teacher network to locate the most informative position related to the target task, generating harder learning samples to refine the network. The searched position is highly adaptive since it considers both the statistical information of each sample and the teacher network capability. Other than being provided new learning materials, the student network also receives guidance from the teacher network. After the student network finishes training, the student network changes its role and acts as a teacher, generating new learning materials and providing stronger guidance to train a better student network. The adaptive learning materials generation and teacher/student update can be conducted more than one time, improving the network capability iteratively. Extensive experimental results validate the efficacy of our method over the existing state of the arts for facial expression recognition.

OR-Net: Pointwise Relational Inference for Data Completion under Partial Observation

Contemporary data-driven methods are typically fed with full supervision on large-scale datasets which limits their applicability. However, in the actual systems with limitations such as measurement error and data acquisition problems, people usually obtain incomplete data. Although data completion has attracted wide attention, the underlying data pattern and relativity are still under-developed. Currently, the family of latent variable models allows learning deep latent variables over observed variables by fitting the marginal distribution. As far as we know, current methods fail to perceive the data relativity under partial observation. Aiming at modeling incomplete data, this work uses relational inference to fill in the incomplete data. Specifically, we expect to approximate the real joint distribution over the partial observation and latent variables, thus infer the unseen targets respectively. To this end, we propose Omni-Relational Network (OR-Net) to model the pointwise relativity in two aspects: (i) On one hand, the inner relationship is built among the context points in the partial observation; (ii) On the other hand, the unseen targets are inferred by learning the cross-relationship with the observed data points. It is further discovered that the proposed method can be generalized to different scenarios regardless of whether the physical structure can be observed or not. It is demonstrated that the proposed OR-Net can be well generalized for data completion tasks of various modalities, including function regression, image completion on MNIST and CelebA datasets, and also sequential motion generation conditioned on the observed poses.

Faster Meta Update Strategy for Noise-Robust Deep Learning

It has been shown that deep neural networks are prone to overfitting on biased training data. Towards addressing this issue, meta-learning employs a meta model for correcting the training bias. Despite the promising performances, super slow training is currently the bottleneck in the meta learning approaches. In this paper, we introduce a novel Faster Meta Update Strategy (FaMUS) to replace the most expensive step in the meta gradient computation with a faster layer-wise approximation. We empirically find that FaMUS yields not only a reasonably accurate but also a low-variance approximation of the meta gradient. We conduct extensive experiments to verify the proposed method on two tasks. We show our method is able to save two-thirds of the training time while still maintaining the comparable or achieving even better generalization performance. In particular, our method achieves the state-of-the-art performance on both synthetic and realistic noisy labels, and obtains promising performance on long-tailed recognition on standard benchmarks.

T2VLAD: Global-Local Sequence Alignment for Text-Video Retrieval

Text-video retrieval is a challenging task that aims to search relevant video contents based on natural language descriptions. The key to this problem is to measure text-video similarities in a joint embedding space. However, most existing methods only consider the global cross-modal similarity and overlook the local details. Some works incorporate the local comparisons through cross-modal local matching and reasoning. These complex operations introduce tremendous computation. In this paper, we design an efficient global-local alignment method. The multi-modal video sequences and text features are adaptively aggregated with a set of shared semantic centers. The local cross-modal similarities are computed between the video feature and text feature within the same center. This design enables the meticulous local comparison and reduces the computational cost of the interaction between each text-video pair. Moreover, a global alignment method is proposed to provide a global cross-modal measurement that is complementary to the local perspective. The global aggregated visual features also provide additional supervision, which is indispensable to the optimization of the learnable semantic centers. We achieve consistent improvements on three standard text-video retrieval benchmarks and outperform the state-of-the-art by a clear margin.

DOTS: Decoupling Operation and Topology in Differentiable Architecture Search

Differentiable Architecture Search (DARTS) has attracted extensive attention due to its efficiency in searching for cell structures. DARTS mainly focuses on the operation search and derives the cell topology from the operation weights. However, the operation weights can not indicate the importance of cell topology and result in poor topology rating correctness. To tackle this, we propose to Decouple the Operation and Topology Search (DOTS), which decouples the topology representation from operation weights and makes an explicit topology search. DOTS is achieved by introducing a topology search space that contains combinations of candidate edges. The proposed search space directly reflects the search objective and can be easily extended to support a flexible number of edges in the searched cell. Existing gradient-based NAS methods can be incorporated into DOTS for further improvement by the topology search. Considering that some operations (e.g., Skip-Connection) can affect the topology, we propose a group operation search scheme to preserve topology-related operations for a better topology search. The experiments on CIFAR10/100 and ImageNet demonstrate that DOTS is an effective solution for differentiable NAS.

DSC-PoseNet: Learning 6DoF Object Pose Estimation via Dual-scale Consistency

Compared to 2D object bounding-box labeling, it is very difficult for humans to annotate 3D object poses, especially when depth images of scenes are unavailable. This paper investigates whether we can estimate the object poses effectively when only RGB images and 2D object annotations are given. To this end, we present a two-step pose estimation framework to attain 6DoF object poses from 2D object bounding-boxes. In the first step, the framework learns to segment objects from real and synthetic data in a weakly-supervised fashion, and the segmentation masks will act as a prior for pose estimation. In the second step, we design a dual-scale pose estimation network, namely DSC-PoseNet, to predict object poses by employing a differential renderer. To be specific, our DSC-PoseNet firstly predicts object poses in the original image scale by comparing the segmentation masks and the rendered visible object masks. Then, we resize object regions to a fixed scale to estimate poses once again. In this fashion, we eliminate large scale variations and focus on rotation estimation, thus facilitating pose estimation. Moreover, we exploit the initial pose estimation to generate pseudo ground-truth to train our DSC-PoseNet in a self-supervised manner. The estimation results in these two scales are ensembled as our final pose estimation. Extensive experiments on widely-used benchmarks demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art models trained on synthetic data by a large margin and even is on par with several fully-supervised methods.

DerainCycleGAN: Rain Attentive CycleGAN for Single Image Deraining and Rainmaking

Single image deraining (SID) is an important and challenging topic in emerging vision applications, and most of emerged deraining methods are supervised relying on the ground truth (i.e., paired images) in recent years. However, in practice it is rather common to have no un-paired images in real deraining task, in such cases how to remove the rain streaks in an unsupervised way will be a very challenging task due to lack of constraints between images and hence suffering from low-quality recovery results. In this paper, we explore the unsupervised SID task using unpaired data and propose a novel net called Attention-guided Deraining by Constrained CycleGAN (or shortly, DerainCycleGAN), which can fully utilize the constrained transfer learning abilitiy and circulatory structure of CycleGAN. Specifically, we design an unsu-pervised attention guided rain streak extractor (U-ARSE) that utilizes a memory to extract the rain streak masks with two constrained cycle-consistency branches jointly by paying attention to both the rainy and rain-free image domains. As a by-product, we also contribute a new paired rain image dataset called Rain200A, which is constructed by our network automatically. Compared with existing synthesis datasets, the rainy streaks in Rain200A contains more obvious and diverse shapes and directions. As a result, existing supervised methods trained on Rain200A can perform much better for processing real rainy images. Extensive experiments on synthesis and real datasets show that our net is superior to existing unsupervised deraining networks, and is also very competitive to other related supervised networks.

Action-Based Conversations Dataset: A Corpus for Building More In-Depth Task-Oriented Dialogue Systems

Existing goal-oriented dialogue datasets focus mainly on identifying slots and values. However, customer support interactions in reality often involve agents following multi-step procedures derived from explicitly-defined company policies as well. To study customer service dialogue systems in more realistic settings, we introduce the Action-Based Conversations Dataset (ABCD), a fully-labeled dataset with over 10K human-to-human dialogues containing 55 distinct user intents requiring unique sequences of actions constrained by policies to achieve task success. We propose two additional dialog tasks, Action State Tracking and Cascading Dialogue Success, and establish a series of baselines involving large-scale, pre-trained language models on this dataset. Empirical results demonstrate that while more sophisticated networks outperform simpler models, a considerable gap (50.8% absolute accuracy) still exists to reach human-level performance on ABCD.

New bosonic hard string scattering amplitudes and extended Gross conjecture in superstring theory

We discover new hard string scattering amplitudes (HSSA) with polarizations orthogonal to the scattering plane in the NS sector of 10D open superstring theory. The corresponding HSSA in the bosonic string theory are of subleading order in energy. In addition, all HSSA are found to be proportional to each other and the ratios among these HSSA are calculated to justify Gross conjecture in 1988 on high energy symmetry of string theory. Moreover, together with these new HSSA, the total number of HSSA calculated in the first massive level of NS sector are found to agree with those of hard polarized fermion string scattering amplitudes (PFSSA) in the R sector calculated recently.

Decoupled Spatial Temporal Graphs for Generic Visual Grounding

Visual grounding is a long-lasting problem in vision-language understanding due to its diversity and complexity. Current practices concentrate mostly on performing visual grounding in still images or well-trimmed video clips. This work, on the other hand, investigates into a more general setting, generic visual grounding, aiming to mine all the objects satisfying the given expression, which is more challenging yet practical in real-world scenarios. Importantly, grounding results are expected to accurately localize targets in both space and time. Whereas, it is tricky to make trade-offs between the appearance and motion features. In real scenarios, model tends to fail in distinguishing distractors with similar attributes. Motivated by these considerations, we propose a simple yet effective approach, named DSTG, which commits to 1) decomposing the spatial and temporal representations to collect all-sided cues for precise grounding; 2) enhancing the discriminativeness from distractors and the temporal consistency with a contrastive learning routing strategy. We further elaborate a new video dataset, GVG, that consists of challenging referring cases with far-ranging videos. Empirical experiments well demonstrate the superiority of DSTG over state-of-the-art on Charades-STA, ActivityNet-Caption and GVG datasets. Code and dataset will be made available.
