The Young and Nearby Normal Type Ia Supernova 2018gv: UV-Optical Observations and the Earliest Spectropolarimetry

The non-detection of companion stars in Type Ia supernova (SN) progenitor systems lends support to the notion of double-degenerate (DD) systems and explosions triggered by the merging of two white dwarfs. This very asymmetric process should lead to a conspicuous polarimetric signature. By contrast, observations consistently find very low continuum polarization as the signatures from the explosion process largely dominate over the pre-explosion configuration within several days. Critical information about the interaction of the ejecta with a companion and any circumstellar matter is encoded in the early polarization spectra. In this study, we obtain spectropolarimetry of SN\,2018gv with the ESO Very Large Telescope at $-$13.6 days relative to the $B-$band maximum light, or $\sim$5 days after the estimated explosion --- the earliest spectropolarimetric observations to date of any Type Ia SN. These early observations still show a low continuum polarization ($\lesssim$0.2\%) and moderate line polarization (0.30$\pm$0.04\% for the prominent \ion{Si}{2} $λ$6355 feature and 0.85$\pm$0.04\% for the high-velocity Ca component). The high degree of spherical symmetry implied by the low line and continuum polarization at this early epoch is consistent with explosion models of delayed detonations and is inconsistent with the merger-induced explosion scenario. The dense UV and optical photometry and optical spectroscopy within the first $\sim$100 days after the maximum light indicate that SN\,2018gv is a normal Type Ia SN with similar spectrophotometric behavior to SN\,2011fe.

Discovery of Highly Blueshifted Broad Balmer and Metastable Helium Absorption Lines in a Tidal Disruption Event

We report the discovery of non-stellar hydrogen Balmer and metastable helium absorption lines accompanying a transient, high-velocity (0.05$c$) broad absorption line (BAL) system in the optical spectra of the tidal disruption event (TDE) AT2018zr ($z=0.071$). In the HST UV spectra, absorption of high- and low-ionization lines are also present at this velocity, making AT2018zr resemble a low-ionization broad absorption line (LoBAL) QSO. We conclude that these transient absorption features are more likely to arise in fast outflows produced by the TDE than absorbed by the unbound debris. In accordance with the outflow picture, we are able to reproduce the flat-topped H$α$ emission in a spherically expanding medium, without invoking the typical prescription of an elliptical disk. We also report the appearance of narrow ($\sim$1000~km~s$^{-1}$) NIII$λ$4640, HeII$\lambda4686$, H$α$, and H$β$, emission in the late-time optical spectra of AT2018zr, which may be a result of UV continuum hardening at late time as observed by Swift. Including AT2018zr, we find a high association rate (3 out of 4) of BALs in the UV spectra of TDEs. This suggests that outflows may be ubiquitous among TDEs and may be less sensitive to viewing angle effects compared to QSO outflows.

The SL(K+3,C) Symmetry of the Bosonic String Scattering Amplitudes

We discover that the exact string scattering amplitudes (SSA) of three tachyons and one arbitrary string state, or the Lauricella SSA (LSSA), in the 26D open bosonic string theory can be expressed in terms of the basis functions in the infinite dimensional representation space of the SL(K+3,C) group. In addition, we find that the K+2 recurrence relations among the LSSA discovered by the present authors previously can be used to reproduce the Cartan subalgebra and simple root system of the SL(K+3,C) group with rank K+2. As a result, the SL(K+3,C) group can be used to solve all the LSSA and express them in terms of one amplitude. As an application in the hard scattering limit, the SL(K+3,C) group can be used to directly prove Gross conjecture [1-3], which was previously corrected and proved by the method of decoupling of zero norm states [4-10].

Learning to Propagate Labels: Transductive Propagation Network for Few-shot Learning

The goal of few-shot learning is to learn a classifier that generalizes well even when trained with a limited number of training instances per class. The recently introduced meta-learning approaches tackle this problem by learning a generic classifier across a large number of multiclass classification tasks and generalizing the model to a new task. Yet, even with such meta-learning, the low-data problem in the novel classification task still remains. In this paper, we propose Transductive Propagation Network (TPN), a novel meta-learning framework for transductive inference that classifies the entire test set at once to alleviate the low-data problem. Specifically, we propose to learn to propagate labels from labeled instances to unlabeled test instances, by learning a graph construction module that exploits the manifold structure in the data. TPN jointly learns both the parameters of feature embedding and the graph construction in an end-to-end manner. We validate TPN on multiple benchmark datasets, on which it largely outperforms existing few-shot learning approaches and achieves the state-of-the-art results.

Maximal Spontaneous Photon Emission and Energy Loss from Free Electrons

Free electron radiation such as Cerenkov, Smith--Purcell, and transition radiation can be greatly affected by structured optical environments, as has been demonstrated in a variety of polaritonic, photonic-crystal, and metamaterial systems. However, the amount of radiation that can ultimately be extracted from free electrons near an arbitrary material structure has remained elusive. Here we derive a fundamental upper limit to the spontaneous photon emission and energy loss of free electrons, regardless of geometry, which illuminates the effects of material properties and electron velocities. We obtain experimental evidence for our theory with quantitative measurements of Smith--Purcell radiation. Our framework allows us to make two predictions. One is a new regime of radiation operation---at subwavelength separations, slower (nonrelativistic) electrons can achieve stronger radiation than fast (relativistic) electrons. The second is a divergence of the emission probability in the limit of lossless materials. We further reveal that such divergences can be approached by coupling free electrons to photonic bound states in the continuum (BICs). Our findings suggest that compact and efficient free-electron radiation sources from microwaves to the soft X-ray regime may be achievable without requiring ultrahigh accelerating voltages.

A General Theoretical and Experimental Framework for Nanoscale Electromagnetism

Local, bulk response functions, e.g permittivity, and the macroscopic Maxwell equations completely specify the classical electromagnetic problem, which features only wavelength $λ$ and geometric scales. The above neglect of intrinsic electronic length scales $L_{\text{e}}$ leads to an eventual breakdown in the nanoscopic limit. Here, we present a general theoretical and experimental framework for treating nanoscale electromagnetic phenomena. The framework features surface-response functions---known as the Feibelman $d$-parameters---which reintroduce the missing electronic length scales. As a part of our framework, we establish an experimental procedure to measure these complex, dispersive surface response functions, enabled by quasi-normal-mode perturbation theory and observations of pronounced nonclassical effects---spectral shifts in excess of 30% and the breakdown of Kreibig-like broadening---in a quintessential multiscale architecture: film-coupled nanoresonators, with feature-sizes comparable to both $L_{\text{e}}$ and $λ$.

Imprints of Early Universe on Gravitational Waves from First-Order Phase Transition in QCD

We study the gravitational wave spectrum from the confinement-deconfinement phase transi-tion in the holographic QCD models for both light quark and heavy quark. We obtain the gravitationalwave spectrum in the deflagration, detonation and runaway cases for different chemical potentials and duration of the phase transition. We find that the gravitational wave spectrum could be observed by EPTA/IPTA and eLISA for large chemical potential and short duartion of phase transtions.

Isochronal age-mass discrepancy of young stars: SCExAO/CHARIS integral field spectroscopy of the HIP 79124 triple system

We present SCExAO/CHARIS 1.1--2.4 micron integral field direct spectroscopy of the young HIP 79124 triple system. HIP 79124 is a member of the Scorpius-Centaurus association, consisting of an A0V primary with two low-mass companions at a projected separation of <1 arcsecond. Thanks to the high quality wavefront corrections provided by SCExAO, both companions are decisively detected without the employment of any PSF-subtraction algorithm to eliminate quasi-static noise. The spectrum of the outer C object is very well matched by Upper Scorpius M4 pm 0.5 standard spectra, with a Teff = 2945 pm 100 and a mass of 350 MJup. HIP 79124 B is detected at a separation of only 180 mas in a highly-correlated noise regime, and it falls in the spectral range M6 pm 0.5 with Teff = 2840 pm 190 and 100 MJup. Previous studies of stellar populations in Sco-Cen have highlighted a discrepancy in isochronal ages between the lower-mass and higher-mass populations. This could be explained either by an age spread in the region, or by conventional isochronal models failing to reproduce the evolution of low-mass stars. The HIP 79124 system should be coeval, and therefore it provides an ideal laboratory to test these scenarios. We place the three components in a color-magnitude diagram and find that the models predict a younger age for the two low-mass companions (3 Myr) than for the primary star (6 Myr). These results imply that the omission of magnetic effects in conventional isochronal models inhibit them from reproducing early low-mass stellar evolution, which is further supported by the fact that new models that include such effects provide more consistent ages in the HIP 79124 system.

Experimental observation of superscattering

Superscattering, induced by degenerate resonances, breaks the fundamental single-channel limit of scattering cross section of subwavelength structures; in principle, an arbitrarily large total cross section can be achieved via superscattering. It thus provides a unique way to strengthen the light-matter interaction at the subwavelength scale, and has many potential applications in sensing, energy harvesting, bio-imaging (such as magnetic resonance imaging), communication and optoelectronics. However, the experimental demonstration of superscattering remains an open challenge due to its vulnerability to structural imperfections and intrinsic material losses. Here we report the first experimental evidence for superscattering, by demonstrating the superscattering simultaneously in two different frequency regimes through both the far-field and near-field measurements. The underlying mechanism for the observed superscattering is the degenerate resonances of confined surface waves, by utilizing a subwavelength metasurface-based multilayer structure. Our work paves the way towards practical applications based on superscattering.

Personalized Video Recommendation Using Rich Contents from Videos

Video recommendation has become an essential way of helping people explore the massive videos and discover the ones that may be of interest to them. In the existing video recommender systems, the models make the recommendations based on the user-video interactions and single specific content features. When the specific content features are unavailable, the performance of the existing models will seriously deteriorate. Inspired by the fact that rich contents (e.g., text, audio, motion, and so on) exist in videos, in this paper, we explore how to use these rich contents to overcome the limitations caused by the unavailability of the specific ones. Specifically, we propose a novel general framework that incorporates arbitrary single content feature with user-video interactions, named as collaborative embedding regression (CER) model, to make effective video recommendation in both in-matrix and out-of-matrix scenarios. Our extensive experiments on two real-world large-scale datasets show that CER beats the existing recommender models with any single content feature and is more time efficient. In addition, we propose a priority-based late fusion (PRI) method to gain the benefit brought by the integrating the multiple content features. The corresponding experiment shows that PRI brings real performance improvement to the baseline and outperforms the existing fusion methods.

DS-SLAM: A Semantic Visual SLAM towards Dynamic Environments

Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) is considered to be a fundamental capability for intelligent mobile robots. Over the past decades, many impressed SLAM systems have been developed and achieved good performance under certain circumstances. However, some problems are still not well solved, for example, how to tackle the moving objects in the dynamic environments, how to make the robots truly understand the surroundings and accomplish advanced tasks. In this paper, a robust semantic visual SLAM towards dynamic environments named DS-SLAM is proposed. Five threads run in parallel in DS-SLAM: tracking, semantic segmentation, local mapping, loop closing, and dense semantic map creation. DS-SLAM combines semantic segmentation network with moving consistency check method to reduce the impact of dynamic objects, and thus the localization accuracy is highly improved in dynamic environments. Meanwhile, a dense semantic octo-tree map is produced, which could be employed for high-level tasks. We conduct experiments both on TUM RGB-D dataset and in the real-world environment. The results demonstrate the absolute trajectory accuracy in DS-SLAM can be improved by one order of magnitude compared with ORB-SLAM2. It is one of the state-of-the-art SLAM systems in high-dynamic environments. Now the code is available at our github: https://github.com/ivipsourcecode/DS-SLAM

A solid approach to biopharmaceutical stabilisation

Ensilication is a technology we developed that can physically stabilise proteins in silica without use of a pre-formed particle matrix. Stabilisation is done by tailor fitting individual proteins with a silica coat using a modified sol-gel process. Biopharmaceuticals, for example, liquid-formulated vaccines with adjuvants, have poor thermal stability. Heating or freezing impairs their potency. As a result, there is an increase in the prevalence of vaccine-preventable diseases in low-income countries even when there are means to combat them. One of the root causes lies in the problematic vaccine cold-chain distribution. We believe that ensilication can improve vaccine availability by enabling transportation without refrigeration. Here, we show that ensilication stabilises tetanus toxoid C fragment (TTCF) and demonstrate that this material can be stored and transported at ambient temperature without compromising the immunogenic properties of TTCF in vivo. TTCF is a component of the diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTP) vaccine. To further our understanding of the ensilication process, and its protective effect on proteins we have studied the formation of TTCF-silica nanoparticles via time-resolved Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS). Our results reveal ensilication to be a staged diffusion-limited cluster aggregation (DLCA) type reaction, induced by the presence of TTCF protein at neutral pH. Analysis of scattering data indicates tailor fitting of TTCF protein. The experimental in vivo immunisation data confirms the retention of immunogenicity after release from silica. Our results suggest that we could utilise this technology for multicomponent vaccines, therapeutics or other biopharmaceuticals that are not compatible with lyophilisation.

A Core Decomposition of Compact Sets in the Plane

A Peano continuum means a locally connected continuum. A compact metric space is called a \emph{Peano compactum} if all its components are Peano continua and if for any constant $C>0$ all but finitely many of its components are of diameter less than $C$. Given a compact set $K\subset\mathbb{C}$, there usually exist several upper semi-continuous decompositions of $K$ into subcontinua such that the quotient space, equipped with the quotient topology, is a Peano compactum. We prove that one of these decompositions is finer than all the others and call it the \emph{core decomposition of $K$ with Peano quotient}. This core decomposition gives rise to a metrizable quotient space, called the Peano model of $K$, which is shown to be determined by the topology of $K$ and hence independent of the embedding of $K$ into $\mathbb{C}$. We also construct a concrete continuum $K\subset\mathbb{R}^3$ such that the core decomposition of $K$ with Peano quotient does not exist. For specific choices of $K\subset\mathbb{C}$, the above mentioned core decomposition coincides with two models obtained recently, namely the locally connected model for unshielded planar continua (like connected Julia sets of polynomials) and the finitely Suslinian model for unshielded planar compact sets (like polynomial Julia sets that may not be connected). The study of such a core decomposition provides partial answers to several questions posed by Curry in 2010. These questions are motivated by other works, including those by Curry and his coauthors, that aim at understanding the dynamics of a rational map $f: \hat{\mathbb{C}}\rightarrow\hat{\mathbb{C}}$ restricted to its Julia set.

Deep Unfolded Robust PCA with Application to Clutter Suppression in Ultrasound

Contrast enhanced ultrasound is a radiation-free imaging modality which uses encapsulated gas microbubbles for improved visualization of the vascular bed deep within the tissue. It has recently been used to enable imaging with unprecedented subwavelength spatial resolution by relying on super-resolution techniques. A typical preprocessing step in super-resolution ultrasound is to separate the microbubble signal from the cluttering tissue signal. This step has a crucial impact on the final image quality. Here, we propose a new approach to clutter removal based on robust principle component analysis (PCA) and deep learning. We begin by modeling the acquired contrast enhanced ultrasound signal as a combination of a low rank and sparse components. This model is used in robust PCA and was previously suggested in the context of ultrasound Doppler processing and dynamic magnetic resonance imaging. We then illustrate that an iterative algorithm based on this model exhibits improved separation of microbubble signal from the tissue signal over commonly practiced methods. Next, we apply the concept of deep unfolding to suggest a deep network architecture tailored to our clutter filtering problem which exhibits improved convergence speed and accuracy with respect to its iterative counterpart. We compare the performance of the suggested deep network on both simulations and in-vivo rat brain scans, with a commonly practiced deep-network architecture and the fast iterative shrinkage algorithm, and show that our architecture exhibits better image quality and contrast.

Multistable Kirigami for Tunable Architected Materials

In nature, materials such as ferroelastics and multiferroics can switch their microstructure in response to external stimuli, and this reconfiguration causes a simultaneous modulation of its material properties. Rapid prototyping technologies have enabled origami and kirigami-inspired architected materials to provide a means for designing shape-shifting structures, and here we show how multistable structures inspired by kirigami provide novel design criteria for preparing mechanical metamaterials with tunable properties. By changing the geometry of kirigami unit cells, we obtain multistable kirigami lattice structures endowed with a bistable snap-through mechanism. We demonstrate the precise control of material stiffness, along with the ability to tune this property in situ by locally and reversibly switching the unit cell configurations. We anticipate these mechanical metamaterials will provide a platform to achieve in situ tunable electrical, optical, and mechanical properties for a variety of applications in multifunctional materials, two-dimensional materials, and soft robotics.

3D Pose Estimation for Fine-Grained Object Categories

Existing object pose estimation datasets are related to generic object types and there is so far no dataset for fine-grained object categories. In this work, we introduce a new large dataset to benchmark pose estimation for fine-grained objects, thanks to the availability of both 2D and 3D fine-grained data recently. Specifically, we augment two popular fine-grained recognition datasets (StanfordCars and CompCars) by finding a fine-grained 3D CAD model for each sub-category and manually annotating each object in images with 3D pose. We show that, with enough training data, a full perspective model with continuous parameters can be estimated using 2D appearance information alone. We achieve this via a framework based on Faster/Mask R-CNN. This goes beyond previous works on category-level pose estimation, which only estimate discrete/continuous viewpoint angles or recover rotation matrices often with the help of key points. Furthermore, with fine-grained 3D models available, we incorporate a dense 3D representation named as location field into the CNN-based pose estimation framework to further improve the performance. The new dataset is available at www.umiacs.umd.edu/~wym/3dpose.html

Zero-Shot Transfer VQA Dataset

Acquiring a large vocabulary is an important aspect of human intelligence. Onecommon approach for human to populating vocabulary is to learn words duringreading or listening, and then use them in writing or speaking. This ability totransfer from input to output is natural for human, but it is difficult for machines.Human spontaneously performs this knowledge transfer in complicated multimodaltasks, such as Visual Question Answering (VQA). In order to approach human-levelArtificial Intelligence, we hope to equip machines with such ability. Therefore, toaccelerate this research, we propose a newzero-shot transfer VQA(ZST-VQA)dataset by reorganizing the existing VQA v1.0 dataset in the way that duringtraining, some words appear only in one module (i.e. questions) but not in theother (i.e. answers). In this setting, an intelligent model should understand andlearn the concepts from one module (i.e. questions), and at test time, transfer themto the other (i.e. predict the concepts as answers). We conduct evaluation on thisnew dataset using three existing state-of-the-art VQA neural models. Experimentalresults show a significant drop in performance on this dataset, indicating existingmethods do not address the zero-shot transfer problem. Besides, our analysis findsthat this may be caused by the implicit bias learned during training.
