Giant photon-drag-induced ultrafast photocurrent in diamond for nonlinear photonics

Diamond is emerging as an attractive third-generation wide-bandgap semiconductor for future on-chip nonlinear photonics and quantum optics due to its unique thermal, optical, and mechanical properties. However, the light-driven current under below-bandgap excitation from the second-order nonlinear optical effect in diamond is still challenging. Herein, a giant second-order nonlinear photocurrent is observed in the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond by utilizing terahertz (THz) emission spectroscopy. This ultrafast photocurrent originates from the photon drag effect (PDE), during which the momentum transfer from the incident photons to the charge carriers at the rich grain boundaries of the CVD diamond after the exclusive subgap π-π* transition upon femtosecond laser excitation. Especially, the interplay between circular and linear PDE to the THz generation has been clarified and distinguished under elliptically polarized light excitation. Furthermore, the picosecond ultrafast dynamics of these charge carriers are also verified by the infrared spectroscopy. Owing to the giant photon-drag-induced ultrafast photocurrent, the CVD diamond presents the highest THz emission efficiency compared with the reported carbon allotropes, which expands the new functionality of diamond nonlinear photonics into on-chip THz devices.

The Shackles of Peer Review: Unveiling the Flaws in the Ivory Tower

This essay delves into the ethical dilemmas encountered within the academic peer review process and investigates the prevailing deficiencies in this system. It highlights how established scholars often adhere to mainstream theories not out of genuine belief, but to safeguard their own reputations. This practice perpetuates intellectual conformity, fuels confirmation bias, and stifles dissenting voices. Furthermore, as the number of incorrect papers published by influential scientists increases, it inadvertently encourages more researchers to follow suit, tacitly endorsing incorrect viewpoints. By examining historical instances of suppressed ideas later proven valuable, this essay calls for a reevaluation of academia's commitment to genuine innovation and progress which is usually achieved by applications of fundamental principles in from textbooks.

Ferroelectric Schottky diodes of CuInP$_2$S$_6$ nanosheet

Ferroelectricity in van der Waals (vdW) layered material has attracted a great deal of interest recently. CuInP$_2$S$_6$ (CIPS), the only vdW layered material whose ferroelectricity in the bulk was demonstrated by direct polarization measurements, was shown to remain ferroelectric down to a thickness of a few nanometers. However, its ferroelectric properties have just started to be explored in the context of potential device applications. We report here the preparation and measurements of metal-ferroelectric semiconductor-metal heterostructures using nanosheets of CIPS obtained by mechanical exfoliation. Four bias voltage and polarization dependent resistive states were observed in the current-voltage characteristics, which we attribute to the formation of ferroelectric Schottky diode, along with switching behavior.

Observation of odd-parity superconductivity in UTe2

Symmetry properties of the order parameter are among the most fundamental characteristics of a superconductor. The pairing symmetry of recently discovered heavy fermion superconductor UTe2 featuring an exceedingly large upper critical field has attracted a great deal of attention. Even though it is widely believed that UTe2 possesses an odd-parity, spin-triplet pairing symmetry, direct evidence for it is lacking, especially at zero or low magnetic fields. We report here the selection-rule results of Josephson coupling between In, an s-wave superconductor, and UTe2. The orientation dependence of the Josephson coupling suggests very strongly that UTe2 possess an odd-parity pairing state of B_1u in zero magnetic fields. We also report the formation of Andreev surface bound states on the (1-10) surface of UTe2.

Pressure Tuned 2D Superconductivity in Black Phosphorus

This paper examines the micro-parameters of superconductors. It studies the modulations from weak van der Waals interaction to strong covalence bonding of superconductors. In particular, we studied layered black phosphorus (BP) as a function of pressure. These results reveal a rich scenario of phase transitions and related quantum phenomena, which show that the phases exhibit superconducting states at a pressure higher than 5.0 GPa. In addition, they indicate an angle-dependent upper critical field that demonstrates the dimensional characteristics of superconductivities. This result suggests that the A17 and cubic phases are three-dimensional (3D). The A7 phase shows a two-dimensional (2D) character. The 2D behavior is related to a weakened, distorted, entangled interlayer coupling.

AIC-AB NET: A Neural Network for Image Captioning with Spatial Attention and Text Attributes

Image captioning is a significant field across computer vision and natural language processing. We propose and present AIC-AB NET, a novel Attribute-Information-Combined Attention-Based Network that combines spatial attention architecture and text attributes in an encoder-decoder. For caption generation, adaptive spatial attention determines which image region best represents the image and whether to attend to the visual features or the visual sentinel. Text attribute information is synchronously fed into the decoder to help image recognition and reduce uncertainty. We have tested and evaluated our AICAB NET on the MS COCO dataset and a new proposed Fashion dataset. The Fashion dataset is employed as a benchmark of single-object images. The results show the superior performance of the proposed model compared to the state-of-the-art baseline and ablated models on both the images from MSCOCO and our single-object images. Our AIC-AB NET outperforms the baseline adaptive attention network by 0.017 (CIDEr score) on the MS COCO dataset and 0.095 (CIDEr score) on the Fashion dataset.

Observation of microscopic confinement dynamics by a tunable topological $θ$-angle

The topological $θ$-angle is central to the understanding of a plethora of phenomena in condensed matter and high-energy physics such as the strong CP problem, dynamical quantum topological phase transitions, and the confinement--deconfinement transition. Difficulties arise when probing the effects of the topological $θ$-angle using classical methods, in particular through the appearance of a sign problem in numerical simulations. Quantum simulators offer a powerful alternate venue for realizing the $θ$-angle, which has hitherto remained an outstanding challenge due to the difficulty of introducing a dynamical electric field in the experiment. Here, we report on the experimental realization of a tunable topological $θ$-angle in a Bose--Hubbard gauge-theory quantum simulator, implemented through a tilted superlattice potential that induces an effective background electric field. We demonstrate the rich physics due to this angle by the direct observation of the confinement--deconfinement transition of $(1+1)$-dimensional quantum electrodynamics. Using an atomic-precision quantum gas microscope, we distinguish between the confined and deconfined phases by monitoring the real-time evolution of particle--antiparticle pairs, which exhibit constrained (ballistic) propagation for a finite (vanishing) deviation of the $θ$-angle from $π$. Our work provides a major step forward in the realization of topological terms on modern quantum simulators, and the exploration of rich physics they have been theorized to entail.

A Novel Isomer of Volleyballene Sc$_{20}$C$_{60}$

The Stone-Wales defect is a well-known and significant defective structure in carbon materials, impacting their mechanical, chemical, and electronic properties. Recently, a novel metal-carbon nanomaterial named Volleyballene has been discovered, characterized by a C-C bond bridging two carbon pentagons. Using first-principles calculations, a stable Stone-Wales-defective counterpart of Volleyballene, exhibiting $T_h$ symmetry, has been proposed by rotating the C-C bond by 90$°$. Although its binding energy per atom is slightly higher than Volleyballene ($ΔE_b$ = 0.009 eV/atom), implying marginally lower structural stability, it can maintain its bond structure until the effective temperature reaches about 1538.56 K, indicating greater thermodynamic stability. Additionally, its highest vibration frequency is 1346.2 cm$^{-1}$, indicating strong chemical bond strength. A theoretical analysis of the Sc$_{20}$C$_{60}$+Sc$_{20}$C$_{60}$ binary systems highlights that the stable building block may be applied in potential nano-assembly.

Ambiguity Meets Uncertainty: Investigating Uncertainty Estimation for Word Sense Disambiguation

Word sense disambiguation (WSD), which aims to determine an appropriate sense for a target word given its context, is crucial for natural language understanding. Existing supervised methods treat WSD as a classification task and have achieved remarkable performance. However, they ignore uncertainty estimation (UE) in the real-world setting, where the data is always noisy and out of distribution. This paper extensively studies UE on the benchmark designed for WSD. Specifically, we first compare four uncertainty scores for a state-of-the-art WSD model and verify that the conventional predictive probabilities obtained at the end of the model are inadequate to quantify uncertainty. Then, we examine the capability of capturing data and model uncertainties by the model with the selected UE score on well-designed test scenarios and discover that the model reflects data uncertainty satisfactorily but underestimates model uncertainty. Furthermore, we explore numerous lexical properties that intrinsically affect data uncertainty and provide a detailed analysis of four critical aspects: the syntactic category, morphology, sense granularity, and semantic relations. The code is available at https://github.com/RyanLiut/WSD-UE.

Blockchain-based Decentralized Co-governance: Innovations and Solutions for Sustainable Crowdfunding

This thesis provides an in-depth exploration of the Decentralized Co-governance Crowdfunding (DCC) Ecosystem, a novel solution addressing prevailing challenges in conventional crowdfunding methods faced by MSMEs and innovative projects. Among the problems it seeks to mitigate are high transaction costs, lack of transparency, fraud, and inefficient resource allocation. Leveraging a comprehensive review of the existing literature on crowdfunding economic activities and blockchain's impact on organizational governance, we propose a transformative socio-economic model based on digital tokens and decentralized co-governance. This ecosystem is marked by a tripartite community structure - the Labor, Capital, and Governance communities - each contributing uniquely to the ecosystem's operation. Our research unfolds the evolution of the DCC ecosystem through distinct phases, offering a novel understanding of socioeconomic dynamics in a decentralized digital world. It also delves into the intricate governance mechanism of the ecosystem, ensuring integrity, fairness, and a balanced distribution of value and wealth.

Adversarial Multi-task Learning for End-to-end Metaphor Detection

Metaphor detection (MD) suffers from limited training data. In this paper, we started with a linguistic rule called Metaphor Identification Procedure and then proposed a novel multi-task learning framework to transfer knowledge in basic sense discrimination (BSD) to MD. BSD is constructed from word sense disambiguation (WSD), which has copious amounts of data. We leverage adversarial training to align the data distributions of MD and BSD in the same feature space, so task-invariant representations can be learned. To capture fine-grained alignment patterns, we utilize the multi-mode structures of MD and BSD. Our method is totally end-to-end and can mitigate the data scarcity problem in MD. Competitive results are reported on four public datasets. Our code and datasets are available.

A class of non-weight modules over the super-BMS$_3$ algebra

In the present paper, a class of non-weight modules over the super-BMS$_3$ algebras $§^ε$ ($ε=0$ or $\frac{1}{2}$) are constructed. Assume that $\mathfrak{t}=\C L_0\oplus\C W_0\oplus\C G_0$ and $\mathfrak{T}=\C L_0\oplus\C W_0$ are the Cartan subalgebra (modulo center) of $§^{0}$ and $§^{\frac{1}{2}}$, respectively. These modules over $§^{0}$ when restricted to the $\mathfrak{t}$ are free of rank $1$, while these modules over $§^{\frac{1}{2}}$ when restricted to the $\mathfrak{T}$ are free of rank $2$. Then we determine the necessary and sufficient conditions for these modules being simple, as well as determining the necessary and sufficient conditions for two $§^ε$-modules being isomorphic. %Moreover, we see that the category of free $U(\mathfrak{t})$-modules of rank $1$ over $§^0$ is %equivalent to the category of free $U(\mathfrak{T})$-modules of rank $2$ over %$§^{\frac{1}{2}}$.

Bending-induced isostructural transitions in ultrathin layers of van der Waals ferrielectrics

Using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) phenomenological approach we analyze the bending-induced re-distribution of electric polarization and field, elastic stresses and strains inside ultrathin layers of van der Waals ferrielectrics. We consider a CuInP2S6 (CIPS) thin layer with fixed edges and suspended central part, the bending of which is induced by external forces. The unique aspect of CIPS is the existence of two ferrielectric states, FI1 and FI2, corresponding to big and small polarization values, which arise due to the specific four-well potential of the eighth-order LGD functional. When the CIPS layer is flat, the single-domain FI1 state is stable in the central part of the layer, and the FI2 states are stable near the fixed edges. With an increase of the layer bending below the critical value, the sizes of the FI2 states near the fixed edges decreases, and the size of the FI1 region increases. When the bending exceeds the critical value, the edge FI2 states disappear being substituted by the FI1 state, but they appear abruptly near the inflection regions and expand as the bending increases. The bending-induced isostructural FI1-FI2 transition is specific for the bended van der Waals ferrielectrics described by the eighth (or higher) order LGD functional with consideration of linear and nonlinear electrostriction couplings. The isostructural transition, which is revealed in the vicinity of room temperature, can significantly reduce the coercive voltage of ferroelectric polarization reversal in CIPS nanoflakes, allowing for the curvature-engineering control of various flexible nanodevices.

Disentangling stress and curvature effects in layered 2D ferroelectric CuInP2S6

Nanoscale ferroelectric 2D materials offer unique opportunity to investigate curvature and strain effects on materials functionalities. Among these, CuInP2S6 (CIPS) has attracted tremendous research interest in recent years due to combination of room temperature ferroelectricity, scalability to a few layers thickness, and unique ferrielectric properties due to coexistence of 2 polar sublattices. Here, we explore the local curvature and strain effect on the polarization in CIPS via piezoresponse force microscopy and spectroscopy. To explain the observed behaviors and decouple the curvature and strain effects in 2D CIPS, we introduce finite element Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire model. The results show that bending induces ferrielectric domains in CIPS, and the polarization-voltage hysteresis loops differ in bending and non-bending regions. Our simulation indicates that the flexoelectric effect can affect local polarization hysteresis. These studies open a novel pathway for the fabrication of curvature-engineered nanoelectronic devices.

Agile gesture recognition for capacitive sensing devices: adapting on-the-job

Automated hand gesture recognition has been a focus of the AI community for decades. Traditionally, work in this domain revolved largely around scenarios assuming the availability of the flow of images of the user hands. This has partly been due to the prevalence of camera-based devices and the wide availability of image data. However, there is growing demand for gesture recognition technology that can be implemented on low-power devices using limited sensor data instead of high-dimensional inputs like hand images. In this work, we demonstrate a hand gesture recognition system and method that uses signals from capacitive sensors embedded into the etee hand controller. The controller generates real-time signals from each of the wearer five fingers. We use a machine learning technique to analyse the time series signals and identify three features that can represent 5 fingers within 500 ms. The analysis is composed of a two stage training strategy, including dimension reduction through principal component analysis and classification with K nearest neighbour. Remarkably, we found that this combination showed a level of performance which was comparable to more advanced methods such as supervised variational autoencoder. The base system can also be equipped with the capability to learn from occasional errors by providing it with an additional adaptive error correction mechanism. The results showed that the error corrector improve the classification performance in the base system without compromising its performance. The system requires no more than 1 ms of computing time per input sample, and is smaller than deep neural networks, demonstrating the feasibility of agile gesture recognition systems based on this technology.

A Novel Two-Layer DAG-based Reactive Protocol for IoT Data Reliability in Metaverse

Many applications, e.g., digital twins, rely on sensing data from Internet of Things (IoT) networks, which is used to infer event(s) and initiate actions to affect an environment. This gives rise to concerns relating to data integrity and provenance. One possible solution to address these concerns is to employ blockchain. However, blockchain has high resource requirements, thereby making it unsuitable for use on resource-constrained IoT devices. To this end, this paper proposes a novel approach, called two-layer directed acyclic graph (2LDAG), whereby IoT devices only store a digital fingerprint of data generated by their neighbors. Further, it proposes a novel proof-of-path (PoP) protocol that allows an operator or digital twin to verify data in an on-demand manner. The simulation results show 2LDAG has storage and communication cost that is respectively two and three orders of magnitude lower than traditional blockchain and also blockchains that use a DAG structure. Moreover, 2LDAG achieves consensus even when 49\% of nodes are malicious.

Genuine Dirac half-metal: A 2D d0-type ferromagnet Mg4N4

When the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is absent, almost all the proposed half-metals with the twofold degenerate nodal points at the K (or K') in two-dimensional (2D) materials are misclassified as "Dirac half-metals" owing to the way graphene was utilized in the earliest studies. Actually, each band crossing point at K or K' is described by a 2D Weyl Hamiltonian with definite chirality; hence, it must be a Weyl point. To the best of our knowledge, there have been no reports of a genuine (i.e., fourfold degenerate) Dirac point half-metal in 2D yet. In this Letter, we proposed for the first time that the 2D d0-type ferromagnet Mg4N4 is a genuine Dirac half-metal with a fourfold degenerate Dirac point at the S high-symmetry point, intrinsic magnetism, high Curie temperature, 100% spin-polarization, robustness to the SOC and uniaxial and biaxial strains, and 100% spin-polarized edge states. The work can be seen as a starting point for future predictions of intrinsically magnetic materials with genuine Dirac points, which will aid the frontier of topo-spintronics researchers.

Magnetic Real Chern Insulator in 2D Metal-Organic Frameworks

Real Chern insulators have attracted great interest, but so far, their material realization is limited to nonmagnetic crystals and to systems without spin-orbit coupling. Here, we reveal magnetic real Chern insulator (MRCI) state in a recently synthesized metal-organic framework material Co3(HITP)2. Its ground state with in-plane ferromagnetic ordering hosts a nontrivial real Chern number, enabled by the C2zT symmetry and robust against spin-orbit coupling. Distinct from previous nonmagnetic examples, the topological corner zero-modes of MRCI are spin-polarized. Furthermore, under small tensile strains, the material undergoes a topological phase transition from MRCI to a magnetic double-Weyl semimetal phase, via a pseudospin-1 critical state. Similar physics can also be found in closely related materials Mn3(HITP)2 and Fe3(HITP)2, which are also existing. Possible experimental detections and implications of an emerging magnetic flat band in the system are discussed.
