Identification of oscillatory brain networks with Hidden Gaussian Graphical Spectral models of EEG/MEG

Identifying the functional networks underpinning indirectly observed processes poses an inverse problem for neurosciences or other fields. A solution of such inverse problems estimates as a first step the activity emerging within functional networks from EEG or MEG data. These EEG or MEG estimates are a direct reflect functional brain network activity with a temporal resolution that no other in vivo neuroimage may provide. A second step estimating functional connectivity from such activity pseudodata unveil the oscillatory brain networks that strongly correlate with all cognition and behavior. Simulations of such MEG or EEG inverse problem also reveal estimation errors of the functional connectivity determined by any of the state-of-the-art inverse solutions. We disclose a significant cause of estimation errors originating from misspecification of the functional network model incorporated into either inverse solution steps. We introduce the Bayesian identification of a Hidden Gaussian Graphical Spectral (HIGGS) model specifying such oscillatory brain networks model. In human EEG alpha rhythm simulations estimation errors measured as ROC performance do not surpass 2% in our HIGGS inverse solution and reach 20% in state-of-the-art methods. Macaque simultaneous EEG/ECoG recordings provide experimental confirmation for our inverse-solution with 1/3 more congruence according to Riemannian distances than state-of-the-art methods.

Explicit symplectic methods in black hole spacetimes

Many Hamiltonian problems in the Solar System are separable or separate into two analytically solvable parts, and thus give a great chance to the development and application of explicit symplectic integrators based on operator splitting and composing. However, such constructions cannot in general be available for curved spacetimes in general relativity and modified theories of gravity, because these curved spacetimes correspond to nonseparable Hamiltonians without the two part splits. Recently, several black hole spacetimes such as the Schwarzschild black hole were found to allow the construction of explicit symplectic integrators, since their corresponding Hamiltonians are separable into more than two explicitly integrable pieces. Although some other curved spacetimes including the Kerr black hole do not exist such multi part splits, their corresponding appropriate time transformation Hamiltonians do. In fact, the key problem for the obtainment of symplectic analytically integrable decomposition algorithms is how to split these Hamiltonians or time transformation Hamiltonians. Considering this idea, we develop explicit sympelcetic schemes in curved spacetimes. We introduce a class of spacetimes whose Hamiltonians are directly split into several explicitly integrable terms. For example, the Hamiltonian of rotating black ring has a 13 part split. We also present two sets of spacetimes whose appropriate time transformation Hamiltonians have the desirable splits. For instance, an 8 part split exists in a time-transformed Hamiltonian of Kerr-Newman solution with disformal parameter. In this way, the proposed symplectic splitting methods will be used widely for long-term integrations of orbits in most curved spacetimes we have known.

Edge and corner superconductivity in a 2D topological model

We consider a two-dimensional generalization of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model which is known to possess a non-trivial topological band structure. For this model, which is characterized by a single parameter, the hopping ratio $0 \leq r\leq 1$, the inhomogeneous superconducting phases induced by an attractive $U$ Hubbard interaction are studied using mean field theory. We show, analytically and by numerical diagonalization, that in lattices with open boundaries, phases with enhanced superconducting order on the corners or the edges can appear, depending on the filling. For finite samples at half filling, the corner site superconducting transition temperature can be much larger than that of the bulk. A novel proximity effect thus arises for $T_{c,bulk} < T<T_{c,corner}$, in which the corner site creates a nonzero tail of the superconducting order in the bulk. We show that such tails should be observable for a range of $r$ and $U$ values.

Statistical Modeling of Soft Error Influence on Neural Networks

Soft errors in large VLSI circuits pose dramatic influence on computing- and memory-intensive neural network (NN) processing. Understanding the influence of soft errors on NNs is critical to protect against soft errors for reliable NN processing. Prior work mainly rely on fault simulation to analyze the influence of soft errors on NN processing. They are accurate but usually specific to limited configurations of errors and NN models due to the prohibitively slow simulation speed especially for large NN models and datasets. With the observation that the influence of soft errors propagates across a large number of neurons and accumulates as well, we propose to characterize the soft error induced data disturbance on each neuron with normal distribution model according to central limit theorem and develop a series of statistical models to analyze the behavior of NN models under soft errors in general. The statistical models reveal not only the correlation between soft errors and NN model accuracy, but also how NN parameters such as quantization and architecture affect the reliability of NNs. The proposed models are compared with fault simulation and verified comprehensively. In addition, we observe that the statistical models that characterize the soft error influence can also be utilized to predict fault simulation results in many cases and we explore the use of the proposed statistical models to accelerate fault simulations of NNs. According to our experiments, the accelerated fault simulation shows almost two orders of magnitude speedup with negligible simulation accuracy loss over the baseline fault simulations.

Differentiable Simulation of Inertial Musculotendons

We propose a simple and practical approach for incorporating the effects of muscle inertia, which has been ignored by previous musculoskeletal simulators in both graphics and biomechanics. We approximate the inertia of the muscle by assuming that muscle mass is distributed along the centerline of the muscle. We express the motion of the musculotendons in terms of the motion of the skeletal joints using a chain of Jacobians, so that at the top level, only the reduced degrees of freedom of the skeleton are used to completely drive both bones and musculotendons. Our approach can handle all commonly used musculotendon path types, including those with multiple path points and wrapping surfaces. For muscle paths involving wrapping surfaces, we use neural networks to model the Jacobians, trained using existing wrapping surface libraries, which allows us to effectively handle the Jacobian discontinuities that occur when musculotendon paths collide with wrapping surfaces. We demonstrate support for higher-order time integrators, complex joints, inverse dynamics, Hill-type muscle models, and differentiability. In the limit, as the muscle mass is reduced to zero, our approach gracefully degrades to traditional simulators without support for muscle inertia. Finally, it is possible to mix and match inertial and non-inertial musculotendons, depending on the application.

Active Defense Analysis of Blockchain Forking through the Spatial-Temporal Lens

Forking breaches the security and performance of blockchain as it is symptomatic of distributed consensus, spurring wide interest in analyzing and resolving it. The state-of-the-art works can be categorized into two kinds: experiment-based and model-based. However, the former falls short in exclusiveness since the derived observations are scenario-specific. Hence, it is problematic to abstractly reveal the crystal-clear forking laws. Besides, the models established in the latter are spatiality-free, which totally overlook the fact that forking is essentially an undesirable result under a given topology. Moreover, few of the ongoing studies have yielded to the active defense mechanisms but only recognized forking passively, which impedes forking prevention and cannot deter it at the source. In this paper, we fill the gap by carrying out the active defense analysis of blockchain forking from the spatial-temporal dimension. Our work is featured by the following two traits: 1) dual dimensions. We consider the spatiality of blockchain overlay network besides temporal characteristics, based on which, a spatial-temporal model for information propagation in blockchain is proposed; 2) active defense. We hint that shrinking the long-range link factor, which indicates the remote connection ability of a link, can cut down forking completely fundamentally. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to inspect forking from the spatial-temporal perspective, so as to present countermeasures proactively. Solid theoretical derivations and extensive simulations are conducted to justify the validity and effectiveness of our analysis.

Real-Time Robust Video Object Detection System Against Physical-World Adversarial Attacks

DNN-based video object detection (VOD) powers autonomous driving and video surveillance industries with rising importance and promising opportunities. However, adversarial patch attack yields huge concern in live vision tasks because of its practicality, feasibility, and powerful attack effectiveness. This work proposes Themis, a software/hardware system to defend against adversarial patches for real-time robust video object detection. We observe that adversarial patches exhibit extremely localized superficial feature importance in a small region with non-robust predictions, and thus propose the adversarial region detection algorithm for adversarial effect elimination. Themis also proposes a systematic design to efficiently support the algorithm by eliminating redundant computations and memory traffics. Experimental results show that the proposed methodology can effectively recover the system from the adversarial attack with negligible hardware overhead.

Traffic Analytics Development Kits (TADK): Enable Real-Time AI Inference in Networking Apps

Sophisticated traffic analytics, such as the encrypted traffic analytics and unknown malware detection, emphasizes the need for advanced methods to analyze the network traffic. Traditional methods of using fixed patterns, signature matching, and rules to detect known patterns in network traffic are being replaced with AI (Artificial Intelligence) driven algorithms. However, the absence of a high-performance AI networking-specific framework makes deploying real-time AI-based processing within networking workloads impossible. In this paper, we describe the design of Traffic Analytics Development Kits (TADK), an industry-standard framework specific for AI-based networking workloads processing. TADK can provide real-time AI-based networking workload processing in networking equipment from the data center out to the edge without the need for specialized hardware (e.g., GPUs, Neural Processing Unit, and so on). We have deployed TADK in commodity WAF and 5G UPF, and the evaluation result shows that TADK can achieve a throughput up to 35.3Gbps per core on traffic feature extraction, 6.5Gbps per core on traffic classification, and can decrease SQLi/XSS detection down to 4.5us per request with higher accuracy than fixed pattern solution.

DS-MVSNet: Unsupervised Multi-view Stereo via Depth Synthesis

In recent years, supervised or unsupervised learning-based MVS methods achieved excellent performance compared with traditional methods. However, these methods only use the probability volume computed by cost volume regularization to predict reference depths and this manner cannot mine enough information from the probability volume. Furthermore, the unsupervised methods usually try to use two-step or additional inputs for training which make the procedure more complicated. In this paper, we propose the DS-MVSNet, an end-to-end unsupervised MVS structure with the source depths synthesis. To mine the information in probability volume, we creatively synthesize the source depths by splattering the probability volume and depth hypotheses to source views. Meanwhile, we propose the adaptive Gaussian sampling and improved adaptive bins sampling approach that improve the depths hypotheses accuracy. On the other hand, we utilize the source depths to render the reference images and propose depth consistency loss and depth smoothness loss. These can provide additional guidance according to photometric and geometric consistency in different views without additional inputs. Finally, we conduct a series of experiments on the DTU dataset and Tanks & Temples dataset that demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of our DS-MVSNet compared with the state-of-the-art methods.

A Mikhlin--Hörmander multiplier theorem for the partial harmonic oscillator

We prove a Mikhlin--Hörmander multiplier theorem for the partial harmonic oscillator $H_{\textup{par}}=-\pa_ρ^2-Δ_x+|x|^2$ for $(ρ, x)\in\R\times\R^d$ by using the Littlewood--Paley $g$ and $g^\ast$ functions and the associated heat kernel estimate. The multiplier we have investigated is defined on $\mathbb R \times \mathbb N$.

On semilinear elliptic equation with negative exponent arising from a closed MEMS model

This paper is concerned with the elliptic equation $-Δu=\frac{λ}{(a-u)^p}$ in a connected, bounded $C^2$ domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^N$ subject to zero Dirichlet boundary conditions, where $λ>0$, $N\geq 1$, $p>0$ and $a:\barΩ\to[0,1]$ vanishes at the boundary with the rate ${\rm dist}(x,\partialΩ)^γ$ for $γ>0$. When $p=2$ and $N=2$, this equation models the closed Micro-Electromechanical Systems devices, where the elastic membrane sticks the curved ground plate on the boundary, but insulating on the boundary. The function $a$ shapes the curved ground plate. Our aim in this paper is to study qualitative properties of minimal solutions of this equation when $λ>0$, $p>0$ and to show how the boundary decaying of $a$ works on the minimal solutions and the pull-in voltage. Particularly, we give a complete analysis for the stability of the minimal solutions.

HoVer-Trans: Anatomy-aware HoVer-Transformer for ROI-free Breast Cancer Diagnosis in Ultrasound Images

Ultrasonography is an important routine examination for breast cancer diagnosis, due to its non-invasive, radiation-free and low-cost properties. However, the diagnostic accuracy of breast cancer is still limited due to its inherent limitations. It would be a tremendous success if we can precisely diagnose breast cancer by breast ultrasound images (BUS). Many learning-based computer-aided diagnostic methods have been proposed to achieve breast cancer diagnosis/lesion classification. However, most of them require a pre-define ROI and then classify the lesion inside the ROI. Conventional classification backbones, such as VGG16 and ResNet50, can achieve promising classification results with no ROI requirement. But these models lack interpretability, thus restricting their use in clinical practice. In this study, we propose a novel ROI-free model for breast cancer diagnosis in ultrasound images with interpretable feature representations. We leverage the anatomical prior knowledge that malignant and benign tumors have different spatial relationships between different tissue layers, and propose a HoVer-Transformer to formulate this prior knowledge. The proposed HoVer-Trans block extracts the inter- and intra-layer spatial information horizontally and vertically. We conduct and release an open dataset GDPH&SYSUCC for breast cancer diagnosis in BUS. The proposed model is evaluated in three datasets by comparing with four CNN-based models and two vision transformer models via five-fold cross validation. It achieves state-of-the-art classification performance with the best model interpretability. In the meanwhile, our proposed model outperforms two senior sonographers on the breast cancer diagnosis when only one BUS image is given.

Quantum phase transition in magnetic nanographenes on a lead superconductor

Quantum spins, referred to the spin operator preserved by full SU(2) symmetry in the absence of the magnetic anistropy, have been proposed to host exotic interactions with superconductivity4. However, spin orbit coupling and crystal field splitting normally cause a significant magnetic anisotropy for d/f-shell spins on surfaces6,9, breaking SU(2) symmetry and fabricating the spins with Ising properties10. Recently, magnetic nanographenes have been proven to host intrinsic quantum magnetism due to their negligible spin orbital coupling and crystal field splitting. Here, we fabricate three atomically precise nanographenes with the same magnetic ground state of spin S=1/2 on Pb(111) through engineering sublattice imbalance in graphene honeycomb lattice. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals the coexistence of magnetic bound states and Kondo screening in such hybridized system. Through engineering the magnetic exchange strength between the unpaired spin in nanographenes and cooper pairs, quantum phase transition from the singlet to the doublet state has been observed, in consistent with quantum models of spins on superconductors. Our work demonstrates delocalized graphene magnetism host highly tunable magnetic bound states with cooper pairs, which can be further developed to study the Majorana bound states and other rich quantum physics of low-dimensional quantum spins on superconductors.

On fractional harmonic functions

Our concern in this paper is to study the qualitative properties for harmonic functions related to the fractional Laplacian. Firstly we classify the polynomials in the whole space and in the half space for the fractional Laplacian defined in a principle value sense at infinity. Secondly, we study the fractional harmonic functions in half space with singularities on the boundary and the related distributional identities.

Inverted Semantic-Index for Image Retrieval

This paper addresses the construction of inverted index for large-scale image retrieval. The inverted index proposed by J. Sivic brings a significant acceleration by reducing distance computations with only a small fraction of the database. The state-of-the-art inverted indices aim to build finer partitions that produce a concise and accurate candidate list. However, partitioning in these frameworks is generally achieved by unsupervised clustering methods which ignore the semantic information of images. In this paper, we replace the clustering method with image classification, during the construction of codebook. We then propose a merging and splitting method to solve the problem that the number of partitions is unchangeable in the inverted semantic-index. Next, we combine our semantic-index with the product quantization (PQ) so as to alleviate the accuracy loss caused by PQ compression. Finally, we evaluate our model on large-scale image retrieval benchmarks. Experiment results demonstrate that our model can significantly improve the retrieval accuracy by generating high-quality candidate lists.

Computation over Tensor Stiefel Manifold: A Preliminary Study

Let $*$ denote the t-product between two third-order tensors. The purpose of this work is to study fundamental computation over the set $St(n,p,l):= \{\mathcal Q\in \mathbb R^{n\times p\times l} \mid \mathcal Q^{\top}* \mathcal Q = \mathcal I \}$, where $\mathcal Q$ is a third-order tensor of size $n\times p \times l$ and $\mathcal I$ ($n\geq p$) is the identity tensor. It is first verified that $St(n,p,l)$ endowed with the usual Frobenius norm forms a Riemannian manifold, which is termed as the (third-order) \emph{tensor Stiefel manifold} in this work. We then derive the tangent space, Riemannian gradient, and Riemannian Hessian on $St(n,p,l)$. In addition, formulas of various retractions based on t-QR, t-polar decomposition, Cayley transform, and t-exponential, as well as vector transports, are presented. It is expected that analogous to their matrix counterparts, the formulas derived in this study may serve as building blocks for analyzing optimization problems over the tensor Stiefel manifold and designing Riemannian algorithms for them.

Characterizing ultra-narrow momentum of atoms by standing-wave light-pulse sequences

We propose a method to characterize the ultra-narrow momentum distribution of atomic gases by employing a standing-wave light-pulse sequences beam-splitter. The mechanism of beam splitting is analyzed in detail, and the influence of a finite-width momentum distribution on the population of each diffraction order is given. The temperature of ultracold atomic gases can be calibrated by measuring the ratio of population in different diffraction orders after double standing-wave light-pulses. We obtain analytical expressions for two typical cases, and demonstrate phase space evolution in the whole process by using the Wigner function. This method is valid for both classical atomic gas and Bose-Einstein condensates, and it is suited for temperature measurement on the space ultra-cold atomic physics platform, in which the ultra-narrow momentum distribution of atomic gas is on the order of 100pK or even lower.

Entangling a Hole Spin with a Time-Bin Photon: A Waveguide Approach for Quantum Dot Sources of Multi-Photon Entanglement

Deterministic sources of multi-photon entanglement are highly attractive for quantum information processing but are challenging to realize experimentally. In this paper, we demonstrate a route towards a scaleable source of time-bin encoded Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger and linear cluster states from a solid-state quantum dot embedded in a nanophotonic crystal waveguide. By utilizing a self-stabilizing double-pass interferometer, we measure a spin-photon Bell state with $(67.8\pm0.4)\%$ fidelity and devise steps for significant further improvements. By employing strict resonant excitation, we demonstrate a photon indistinguishability of $(95.7\pm0.8)\%$, which is conducive to fusion of multiple cluster states for scaling up the technology and producing more general graph states.
