A note on modular forms and generalized anomaly cancellation formulas 2

In [7], Liu and Wang generalized the Han-Liu-Zhang cancellation formulas to the (a, b) type cancellation formulas. In this note, we prove some another (a, b) type cancellation formulas for even-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. And by transgression, we obtain some characteristic forms with modularity properties on odd-dimensional manifolds.

Hilbert expansion of the Boltzmann equation on a 2-dimensional disk with specular boundary condition

In the present paper, we concern the hydrodynamic limit of Boltzmann equation with specular reflection boundary condition in a two-dimensional disk to the compressible Euler equations. Due to the non-zero curvature and non-zero tangential velocity of compressible Euler solution on the boundary, new difficulties arise in the construction of Knudsen boundary layer. By employing the geometric correction, and an innovative and refined $L^2-L^\infty$ method, we establish the existence and space-decay for a truncated Knudsen boundary layer. Then, by the Hilbert expansion of multi-scales, we successfully justify the hydrodynamic limit of Boltzmann equation with specular reflection boundary condition to the compressible Euler equations in the two-dimensional disk.

Spectral Similarity Masks Structural Diversity at Hydrophobic Water Interfaces

The air-water and graphene-water interfaces represent quintessential examples of the liquid-gas and liquid-solid boundaries, respectively. While the sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectra of these interfaces exhibit certain similarities, a consensus on their signals and interpretations has yet to be reached. Leveraging deep learning, we accessed fully first-principles SFG spectra for both systems, addressing recent experimental discrepancies. Despite both interfaces exhibiting microscopically hydrophobic characteristics, our findings reveal that similarities in SFG signals do not translate into comparable interfacial microscopic properties. Instead, graphene-water and air-water interfaces exhibit fundamental differences in SFG-active thicknesses, hydrogen-bonding networks, and dynamic diffusion behavior. These distinctions underscore the stronger confinements imposed by the solid-liquid interface compared with the weaker constraints of the gas-liquid interface.

A gas-surface interaction algorithm for discrete velocity methods in predicting rarefied and multi-scale flows: For Maxwell boundary model

The rarefied flow and multi-scale flow are crucial for the aerodynamic design of spacecraft, ultra-low orbital vehicles and plumes. By introducing a discrete velocity space, the discrete velocity method (DVM) and unified methods can capture complex and non-equilibrium distribution functions and describe flow behaviors exactly. The unified methods predict flows from continuum to rarefied regimes by adopting unified modeling, and they can be further applied to other multi-scale physics such as radiation heat transfer, phonon heat transfer and plasma. In the flow field, the concrete dynamic process needs to describe the gas-gas interaction and gas-surface interaction (GSI). However, in both DVM and unified methods, only a simple but not accurate GSI is used, which can be regarded as a Maxwell GSI with a fixed accommodation coefficient of 1 (full accommodation) at the present stage. To overcome the bottleneck in extending DVM and unified methods to the numerical experiment and investigate real multi-scale flow physics, this paper realizes precise GSI in the DVM framework by constructing the boundary conditions of a concrete Maxwell GSI with an adjustable accommodation coefficient. In the constructing process, the problems of macro-conservation and micro-consistency in the DVS at the boundary are well solved by reflected macroscopic flux and interpolation distribution function and interpolation error correction, respectively. Meanwhile, considering that the multi-scale flows in the background of aeronautics and aerospace are often at supersonic and hypersonic speeds, the unstructured velocity space (UVS) is essential. From the perspective of generality, the GSI is forced on UVS. Besides, by combined with the unified method (the unified gas-kinetic scheme in the paper), the effectiveness and validity of the present GSI on the DVM framework are verified by a series of simulations.

Conserved discrete unified gas-kinetic scheme with unstructured discrete velocity space

Discrete unified gas-kinetic scheme (DUGKS) is a multi-scale numerical method for flows from continuum limit to free molecular limit, and is especially suitable for the simulation of multi-scale flows, benefiting from its multi-scale property. To reduce integration error of the DUGKS and ensure the conservation property of the collision term in isothermal flow simulations, a Conserved-DUGKS (C-DUGKS) is proposed. On the other hand, both DUGKS and C-DUGKS adopt Cartesian-type discrete velocity space, in which Gaussian and Newton-Cotes numerical quadrature are used for calculating the macroscopic physical variables in low speed and high speed flows, respectively. While, the Cartesian-type discrete velocity space leads to huge computational cost and memory demand. In this paper, the isothermal C-DUGKS is extended to the non-isothermal case by adopting coupled mass and inertial energy distribution functions. Moreover, since the unstructured mesh, such as the triangular mesh in two dimensional case, is more flexible than the structured Cartesian mesh, it is introduced to the discrete velocity space of C-DUGKS, such that more discrete velocity points can be arranged in the velocity regions that enclose large number of molecules, and only a few discrete velocity points need to be arranged in the velocity regions with small amount of molecules in it. By using the unstructured discrete velocity space, the computational efficiency of C-DUGKS is significantly increased. A series of numerical tests in a wide range of Knudsen numbers, such as the Couette flow, lid-driven cavity flow, two-dimensional rarefied Riemann problem and the supersonic cylinder flows, are carried out to examine the validity and efficiency of the present method.

IntelliCircos: A Data-driven and AI-powered Authoring Tool for Circos Plots

Genomics data is essential in biological and medical domains, and bioinformatics analysts often manually create circos plots to analyze the data and extract valuable insights. However, creating circos plots is complex, as it requires careful design for multiple track attributes and positional relationships between them. Typically, analysts often seek inspiration from existing circos plots, and they have to iteratively adjust and refine the plot to achieve a satisfactory final design, making the process both tedious and time-intensive. To address these challenges, we propose IntelliCircos, an AI-powered interactive authoring tool that streamlines the process from initial visual design to the final implementation of circos plots. Specifically, we build a new dataset containing 4396 circos plots with corresponding annotations and configurations, which are extracted and labeled from published papers. With the dataset, we further identify track combination patterns, and utilize Large Language Model (LLM) to provide domain-specific design recommendations and configuration references to navigate the design of circos plots. We conduct a user study with 8 bioinformatics analysts to evaluate IntelliCircos, and the results demonstrate its usability and effectiveness in authoring circos plots.

Global well-posedness of Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann equations with neutral initial data and small relative entropy

The dynamics of dilute plasma particles such as electrons and ions can be modeled by the fundamental two species Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann equations, which describes mutual interactions of plasma particles through collisions in the self-induced electric field. In this paper, we are concerned with global well-posedness of mild solutions to these equations. We establish the global existence and uniqueness of mild solutions to the two species Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann equations on the torus for a class of initial data with bounded time-velocity-weighted $L^{\infty}$ norm under a nearly neutral condition, along with smallness conditions on the $L^1_xL^\infty_v$ norm and defects in mass, energy and entropy. These conditions allow the initial data to exhibit large amplitude oscillations. Due to the nonlinear effect of electric field, we consider the problem in $W^{1, \infty}_{x,v}$ with large amplitude data, new difficulty arises when establishing globally uniform $W^{1, \infty}_{x,v}$ bound, which has been overcome based on nearly neutral condition, time-velocity weight function and a logarithmic estimate. Moreover, the long-time behavior of solutions in $W^{1, \infty}_{x,v}$ norm, with exponential decay rates of convergence, is also obtained.

Hard constraint learning approaches with trainable influence functions for evolutionary equations

This paper develops a novel deep learning approach for solving evolutionary equations, which integrates sequential learning strategies with an enhanced hard constraint strategy featuring trainable parameters, addressing the low computational accuracy of standard Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) in large temporal domains.Sequential learning strategies divide a large temporal domain into multiple subintervals and solve them one by one in a chronological order, which naturally respects the principle of causality and improves the stability of the PINN solution. The improved hard constraint strategy strictly ensures the continuity and smoothness of the PINN solution at time interval nodes, and at the same time passes the information from the previous interval to the next interval, which avoids the incorrect/trivial solution at the position far from the initial time. Furthermore, by investigating the requirements of different types of equations on hard constraints, we design a novel influence function with trainable parameters for hard constraints, which provides theoretical and technical support for the effective implementations of hard constraint strategies, and significantly improves the universality and computational accuracy of our method. In addition, an adaptive time-domain partitioning algorithm is proposed, which plays an important role in the application of the proposed method as well as in the improvement of computational efficiency and accuracy. Numerical experiments verify the performance of the method. The data and code accompanying this paper are available at https://github.com/zhizhi4452/HCS.

Geometric Constrained Non-Line-of-Sight Imaging

Normal reconstruction is crucial in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging, as it provides key geometric and lighting information about hidden objects, which significantly improves reconstruction accuracy and scene understanding. However, jointly estimating normals and albedo expands the problem from matrix-valued functions to tensor-valued functions that substantially increasing complexity and computational difficulty. In this paper, we propose a novel joint albedo-surface reconstruction method, which utilizes the Frobenius norm of the shape operator to control the variation rate of the normal field. It is the first attempt to apply regularization methods to the reconstruction of surface normals for hidden objects. By improving the accuracy of the normal field, it enhances detail representation and achieves high-precision reconstruction of hidden object geometry. The proposed method demonstrates robustness and effectiveness on both synthetic and experimental datasets. On transient data captured within 15 seconds, our surface normal-regularized reconstruction model produces more accurate surfaces than recently proposed methods and is 30 times faster than the existing surface reconstruction approach.

A New Segment Routing method with Swap Node Selection Strategy Based on Deep Reinforcement Learning for Software Defined Network

The existing segment routing (SR) methods need to determine the routing first and then use path segmentation approaches to select swap nodes to form a segment routing path (SRP). They require re-segmentation of the path when the routing changes. Furthermore, they do not consider the flow table issuance time, which cannot maximize the speed of issuance flow table. To address these issues, this paper establishes an optimization model that can simultaneously form routing strategies and path segmentation strategies for selecting the appropriate swap nodes to reduce flow table issuance time. It also designs an intelligent segment routing algorithm based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL-SR) to solve the proposed model. First, a traffic matrix is designed as the state space for the deep reinforcement learning agent; this matrix includes multiple QoS performance indicators, flow table issuance time overhead and SR label stack depth. Second, the action selection strategy and corresponding reward function are designed, where the agent selects the next node considering the routing; in addition, the action selection strategy whether the newly added node is selected as the swap node and the corresponding reward function are designed considering the time cost factor for the controller to issue the flow table to the swap node. Finally, a series of experiments and their results show that, compared with the existing methods, the designed segmented route optimization model and the intelligent solution algorithm (DRL-SR) can reduce the time overhead required to complete the segmented route establishment task while optimizing performance metrics such as throughput, delays and packet losses.

Preference Alignment for Diffusion Model via Explicit Denoised Distribution Estimation

Diffusion models have shown remarkable success in text-to-image generation, making preference alignment for these models increasingly important. The preference labels are typically available only at the terminal of denoising trajectories, which poses challenges in optimizing the intermediate denoising steps. In this paper, we propose to conduct Denoised Distribution Estimation (DDE) that explicitly connects intermediate steps to the terminal denoised distribution. Therefore, preference labels can be used for the entire trajectory optimization. To this end, we design two estimation strategies for our DDE. The first is stepwise estimation, which utilizes the conditional denoised distribution to estimate the model denoised distribution. The second is single-shot estimation, which converts the model output into the terminal denoised distribution via DDIM modeling. Analytically and empirically, we reveal that DDE equipped with two estimation strategies naturally derives a novel credit assignment scheme that prioritizes optimizing the middle part of the denoising trajectory. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach achieves superior performance, both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Data Insights as Data: Quick Overview and Exploration of Automated Data Insights

Automated data insight mining and visualization have been widely used in various business intelligence applications (e.g., market analysis and product promotion). However, automated insight mining techniques often output the same mining results to different analysts without considering their personal preferences, while interactive insight discovery requires significant manual effort. This paper fills the gap by integrating automated insight mining with interactive data visualization and striking a proper balance between them to facilitate insight discovery and exploration. Specifically, we regard data insights as a special type of data and further present InsightMap, a novel visualization approach that uses the map metaphor to provide a quick overview and in-depth exploration of different data insights, where a metric is proposed to measure the similarity between different insights. The effectiveness and usability of InsightMap are demonstrated through extensive case studies and in-depth user interviews.

MMGenBench: Fully Automatically Evaluating LMMs from the Text-to-Image Generation Perspective

Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) demonstrate impressive capabilities. However, current benchmarks predominantly focus on image comprehension in specific domains, and these benchmarks are labor-intensive to construct. Moreover, their answers tend to be brief, making it difficult to assess the ability of LMMs to generate detailed descriptions of images. To address these limitations, we propose the MMGenBench-Pipeline, a straightforward and fully automated evaluation pipeline. This involves generating textual descriptions from input images, using these descriptions to create auxiliary images via text-to-image generative models, and then comparing the original and generated images. Furthermore, to ensure the effectiveness of MMGenBench-Pipeline, we design MMGenBench-Test, evaluating LMMs across 13 distinct image patterns, and MMGenBench-Domain, focusing on generative image performance. A thorough evaluation involving over 50 popular LMMs demonstrates the effectiveness and reliability of both the pipeline and benchmark. Our observations indicate that numerous LMMs excelling in existing benchmarks fail to adequately complete the basic tasks related to image understanding and description. This finding highlights the substantial potential for performance improvement in current LMMs and suggests avenues for future model optimization. Concurrently, MMGenBench-Pipeline can efficiently assess the performance of LMMs across diverse domains using only image inputs.

SelaFD:Seamless Adaptation of Vision Transformer Fine-tuning for Radar-based Human Activity Recognition

Human Activity Recognition (HAR) such as fall detection has become increasingly critical due to the aging population, necessitating effective monitoring systems to prevent serious injuries and fatalities associated with falls. This study focuses on fine-tuning the Vision Transformer (ViT) model specifically for HAR using radar-based Time-Doppler signatures. Unlike traditional image datasets, these signals present unique challenges due to their non-visual nature and the high degree of similarity among various activities. Directly fine-tuning the ViT with all parameters proves suboptimal for this application. To address this challenge, we propose a novel approach that employs Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) fine-tuning in the weight space to facilitate knowledge transfer from pre-trained ViT models. Additionally, to extract fine-grained features, we enhance feature representation through the integration of a serial-parallel adapter in the feature space. Our innovative joint fine-tuning method, tailored for radar-based Time-Doppler signatures, significantly improves HAR accuracy, surpassing existing state-of-the-art methodologies in this domain. Our code is released at https://github.com/wangyijunlyy/SelaFD.

Intuit: Explain Quantum Computing Concepts via AR-based Analogy

Quantum computing has shown great potential to revolutionize traditional computing and can provide an exponential speedup for a wide range of possible applications, attracting various stakeholders. However, understanding fundamental quantum computing concepts remains a significant challenge for novices because of their abstract and counterintuitive nature. Thus, we propose an analogy-based characterization framework to construct the mental mapping between quantum computing concepts and daily objects, informed by in-depth expert interviews and a literature review, covering key quantum concepts and characteristics like number of qubits, output state duality, quantum concept type, and probability quantification. Then, we developed an AR-based prototype system, Intuit, using situated analytics to explain quantum concepts through daily objects and phenomena (e.g., rotating coins, paper cutters). We thoroughly evaluated our approach through in-depth user and expert interviews. The Results demonstrate the effectiveness and usability of Intuit in helping learners understand abstract concepts in an intuitive and engaging manner.
