General-purpose machine-learned potential for 16 elemental metals and their alloys

Machine-learned potentials (MLPs) have exhibited remarkable accuracy, yet the lack of general-purpose MLPs for a broad spectrum of elements and their alloys limits their applicability. Here, we present a feasible approach for constructing a unified general-purpose MLP for numerous elements, demonstrated through a model (UNEP-v1) for 16 elemental metals and their alloys. To achieve a complete representation of the chemical space, we show, via principal component analysis and diverse test datasets, that employing one-component and two-component systems suffices. Our unified UNEP-v1 model exhibits superior performance across various physical properties compared to a widely used embedded-atom method potential, while maintaining remarkable efficiency. We demonstrate our approach's effectiveness through reproducing experimentally observed chemical order and stable phases, and large-scale simulations of plasticity and primary radiation damage in MoTaVW alloys. This work represents a significant leap towards a unified general-purpose MLP encompassing the periodic table, with profound implications for materials science.

Direct Alignment of Language Models via Quality-Aware Self-Refinement

Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) has been commonly used to align the behaviors of Large Language Models (LLMs) with human preferences. Recently, a popular alternative is Direct Policy Optimization (DPO), which replaces an LLM-based reward model with the policy itself, thus obviating the need for extra memory and training time to learn the reward model. However, DPO does not consider the relative qualities of the positive and negative responses, and can lead to sub-optimal training outcomes. To alleviate this problem, we investigate the use of intrinsic knowledge within the on-the-fly fine-tuning LLM to obtain relative qualities and help to refine the loss function. Specifically, we leverage the knowledge of the LLM to design a refinement function to estimate the quality of both the positive and negative responses. We show that the constructed refinement function can help self-refine the loss function under mild assumptions. The refinement function is integrated into DPO and its variant Identity Policy Optimization (IPO). Experiments across various evaluators indicate that they can improve the performance of the fine-tuned models over DPO and IPO.

Resource-Efficient and Self-Adaptive Quantum Search in a Quantum-Classical Hybrid System

Over the past decade, the rapid advancement of deep learning and big data applications has been driven by vast datasets and high-performance computing systems. However, as we approach the physical limits of semiconductor fabrication in the post-Moore's Law era, questions arise about the future of these applications. In parallel, quantum computing has made significant progress with the potential to break limits. Major companies like IBM, Google, and Microsoft provide access to noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers. Despite the theoretical promise of Shor's and Grover's algorithms, practical implementation on current quantum devices faces challenges, such as demanding additional resources and a high number of controlled operations. To tackle these challenges and optimize the utilization of limited onboard qubits, we introduce ReSaQuS, a resource-efficient index-value searching system within a quantum-classical hybrid framework. Building on Grover's algorithm, ReSaQuS employs an automatically managed iterative search approach. This method analyzes problem size, filters fewer probable data points, and progressively reduces the dataset with decreasing qubit requirements. Implemented using Qiskit and evaluated through extensive experiments, ReSaQuS has demonstrated a substantial reduction, up to 86.36\% in cumulative qubit consumption and 72.72\% in active periods, reinforcing its potential in optimizing quantum computing application deployment.

MLP: Motion Label Prior for Temporal Sentence Localization in Untrimmed 3D Human Motions

In this paper, we address the unexplored question of temporal sentence localization in human motions (TSLM), aiming to locate a target moment from a 3D human motion that semantically corresponds to a text query. Considering that 3D human motions are captured using specialized motion capture devices, motions with only a few joints lack complex scene information like objects and lighting. Due to this character, motion data has low contextual richness and semantic ambiguity between frames, which limits the accuracy of predictions made by current video localization frameworks extended to TSLM to only a rough level. To refine this, we devise two novel label-prior-assisted training schemes: one embed prior knowledge of foreground and background to highlight the localization chances of target moments, and the other forces the originally rough predictions to overlap with the more accurate predictions obtained from the flipped start/end prior label sequences during recovery training. We show that injecting label-prior knowledge into the model is crucial for improving performance at high IoU. In our constructed TSLM benchmark, our model termed MLP achieves a recall of 44.13 at IoU@0.7 on the BABEL dataset and 71.17 on HumanML3D (Restore), outperforming prior works. Finally, we showcase the potential of our approach in corpus-level moment retrieval. Our source code is openly accessible at https://github.com/eanson023/mlp.

Microscopic Insights into Fatigue Mechanism in Wurtzite Ferroelectric Al$_{0.65}$Sc$_{0.35}$N: Oxygen Infiltration Enabled Grain Amorphization Spanning Boundary to Bulk

For the first time, the fatigue behavior involving external oxygen in highly Sc-doped AlN ferroelectric film was observed using transmission electron microscope techniques. Despite increasing the Sc composition in AlScN film contributes to reducing the device operation voltage, the inherent affinity of Sc for oxygen introduces instability in device performance. In this study, oxygen incorporation at top electrode edges and grain boundaries accompanied with an increase in current leakage and the disappearance of ferroelectric properties, was observed in nanoscale after long-term field cycling. This observation indicates the emergence of non-ferroelectric and even amorphous states. This presented work revealed solid experimental evidence of an oxygen-involved fatigue mechanism, providing valuable insights into the physical nature of the ferroelectric properties of AlScN films.

New constraints on Triton's atmosphere from the 6 October 2022 stellar occultation

The atmosphere of Triton was probed directly by observing a ground-based stellar occultation on 6 October 2022. This rare event yielded 23 positive light curves collected from 13 separate observation stations contributing to our campaign. The significance of this event lies in its potential to directly validate the modest pressure fluctuation on Triton, a phenomenon not definitively verified by previous observations, including only five stellar occultations, and the Voyager 2 radio occultation in 1989. Using an approach consistent with a comparable study, we precisely determined a surface pressure of $14.07_{-0.13}^{+0.21}~\mathrm{μbar}$ in 2022. This new pressure rules out any significant monotonic variation in pressure between 2017 and 2022 through direct observations, as it is in alignment with the 2017 value. Additionally, both the pressures in 2017 and 2022 align with the 1989 value. This provides further support for the conclusion drawn from the previous volatile transport model simulation, which is consistent with the observed alignment between the pressures in 1989 and 2017; that is to say, the pressure fluctuation is modest. Moreover, this conclusion suggests the existence of a northern polar cap extended down to at least $45^\circ$N$-60^\circ$N and the presence of nitrogen between $30^\circ$S and $0^\circ$.

On the Concept Trustworthiness in Concept Bottleneck Models

Concept Bottleneck Models (CBMs), which break down the reasoning process into the input-to-concept mapping and the concept-to-label prediction, have garnered significant attention due to their remarkable interpretability achieved by the interpretable concept bottleneck. However, despite the transparency of the concept-to-label prediction, the mapping from the input to the intermediate concept remains a black box, giving rise to concerns about the trustworthiness of the learned concepts (i.e., these concepts may be predicted based on spurious cues). The issue of concept untrustworthiness greatly hampers the interpretability of CBMs, thereby hindering their further advancement. To conduct a comprehensive analysis on this issue, in this study we establish a benchmark to assess the trustworthiness of concepts in CBMs. A pioneering metric, referred to as concept trustworthiness score, is proposed to gauge whether the concepts are derived from relevant regions. Additionally, an enhanced CBM is introduced, enabling concept predictions to be made specifically from distinct parts of the feature map, thereby facilitating the exploration of their related regions. Besides, we introduce three modules, namely the cross-layer alignment (CLA) module, the cross-image alignment (CIA) module, and the prediction alignment (PA) module, to further enhance the concept trustworthiness within the elaborated CBM. The experiments on five datasets across ten architectures demonstrate that without using any concept localization annotations during training, our model improves the concept trustworthiness by a large margin, meanwhile achieving superior accuracy to the state-of-the-arts. Our code is available at https://github.com/hqhQAQ/ProtoCBM.

Anomaly cancellation formulas and E_8 bundles for almost complex manifolds

In this paper, we extend the elliptic genus in [10] by the gauge group E_8 and the gauge group E_8*E_8. Then we prove that the generalized elliptic genus are the weak Jacobi forms. Using these elliptic genus, we obtain some SL_2(Z) modular forms and get some new anomaly cancellation formulas of characteristic forms for almost complex manifolds.

Training-Free Pretrained Model Merging

Recently, model merging techniques have surfaced as a solution to combine multiple single-talent models into a single multi-talent model. However, previous endeavors in this field have either necessitated additional training or fine-tuning processes, or require that the models possess the same pre-trained initialization. In this work, we identify a common drawback in prior works w.r.t. the inconsistency of unit similarity in the weight space and the activation space. To address this inconsistency, we propose an innovative model merging framework, coined as merging under dual-space constraints (MuDSC). Specifically, instead of solely maximizing the objective of a single space, we advocate for the exploration of permutation matrices situated in a region with a unified high similarity in the dual space, achieved through the linear combination of activation and weight similarity matrices. In order to enhance usability, we have also incorporated adaptations for group structure, including Multi-Head Attention and Group Normalization. Comprehensive experimental comparisons demonstrate that MuDSC can significantly boost the performance of merged models with various task combinations and architectures. Furthermore, the visualization of the merged model within the multi-task loss landscape reveals that MuDSC enables the merged model to reside in the overlapping segment, featuring a unified lower loss for each task. Global Finite-Energy Solutions of the Compressible Euler-Poisson Equations for General Pressure Laws with Spherical Symmetry

We are concerned with global finite-energy solutions of the three-dimensional compressible Euler-Poisson equations with gravitational potential and general pressure law, especially including the constitutive equation of white dwarf stars. We construct global finite-energy solutions of the Cauchy problem for the Euler-Poisson equations with large initial data of spherical symmetry as the inviscid limit of the solutions of the corresponding Cauchy problem for the Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations. The strong convergence of the vanishing viscosity solutions is achieved through entropy analysis, uniform estimates in $L^p$, and a more general compensated compactness framework via several new ingredients. A key estimate is first established for the integrability of the density over unbounded domains independent of the viscosity coefficient. Then a special entropy pair is carefully designed by solving a Goursat problem for the entropy equation such that a higher integrability of the velocity is established, which is a crucial step. Moreover, the weak entropy kernel for the general pressure law and its fractional derivatives of the required order near vacuum ($ρ=0$) and far-field ($ρ=\infty$) are carefully analyzed. Owing to the generality of the pressure law, only the $W^{-1,p}_{\rm loc}$-compactness of weak entropy dissipation measures with $p\in [1,2)$ can be obtained; this is rescued by the equi-integrability of weak entropy pairs which can be established by the estimates obtained above so that the div-curl lemma still applies. Finally, based on the above analysis of weak entropy pairs, the $L^p$ compensated compactness framework for the compressible Euler equations with general pressure law is established. This new compensated compactness framework and the techniques developed in this paper should be useful for solving further nonlinear problems with similar features.

Global solutions of the 3D incompressible inhomogeneous viscoelastic system

In this paper, we prove the global existence of strong solutions for the 3D incompressible inhomogeneous viscoelastic system. We do not assume the "initial state" assumption and the "div-curl" structure inspired by the works [59,61]. It is a key to transform the original system into a suitable dissipative system by introducing a new effective tensor, which is useful to establish a series of energy estimates with appropriate time weights.

Automatic driving lane change safety prediction model based on LSTM

Autonomous driving technology can improve traffic safety and reduce traffic accidents. In addition, it improves traffic flow, reduces congestion, saves energy and increases travel efficiency. In the relatively mature automatic driving technology, the automatic driving function is divided into several modules: perception, decision-making, planning and control, and a reasonable division of labor can improve the stability of the system. Therefore, autonomous vehicles need to have the ability to predict the trajectory of surrounding vehicles in order to make reasonable decision planning and safety measures to improve driving safety. By using deep learning method, a safety-sensitive deep learning model based on short term memory (LSTM) network is proposed. This model can alleviate the shortcomings of current automatic driving trajectory planning, and the output trajectory not only ensures high accuracy but also improves safety. The cell state simulation algorithm simulates the trackability of the trajectory generated by this model. The research results show that compared with the traditional model-based method, the trajectory prediction method based on LSTM network has obvious advantages in predicting the trajectory in the long time domain. The intention recognition module considering interactive information has higher prediction and accuracy, and the algorithm results show that the trajectory is very smooth based on the premise of safe prediction and efficient lane change. And autonomous vehicles can efficiently and safely complete lane changes.

Construction and application of artificial intelligence crowdsourcing map based on multi-track GPS data

In recent years, the rapid development of high-precision map technology combined with artificial intelligence has ushered in a new development opportunity in the field of intelligent vehicles. High-precision map technology is an important guarantee for intelligent vehicles to achieve autonomous driving. However, due to the lack of research on high-precision map technology, it is difficult to rationally use this technology in the field of intelligent vehicles. Therefore, relevant researchers studied a fast and effective algorithm to generate high-precision GPS data from a large number of low-precision GPS trajectory data fusion, and generated several key data points to simplify the description of GPS trajectory, and realized the "crowdsourced update" model based on a large number of social vehicles for map data collection came into being. This kind of algorithm has the important significance to improve the data accuracy, reduce the measurement cost and reduce the data storage space. On this basis, this paper analyzes the implementation form of crowdsourcing map, so as to improve the various information data in the high-precision map according to the actual situation, and promote the high-precision map can be reasonably applied to the intelligent car.

VAID: Indexing View Designs in Visual Analytics System

Visual analytics (VA) systems have been widely used in various application domains. However, VA systems are complex in design, which imposes a serious problem: although the academic community constantly designs and implements new designs, the designs are difficult to query, understand, and refer to by subsequent designers. To mark a major step forward in tackling this problem, we index VA designs in an expressive and accessible way, transforming the designs into a structured format. We first conducted a workshop study with VA designers to learn user requirements for understanding and retrieving professional designs in VA systems. Thereafter, we came up with an index structure VAID to describe advanced and composited visualization designs with comprehensive labels about their analytical tasks and visual designs. The usefulness of VAID was validated through user studies. Our work opens new perspectives for enhancing the accessibility and reusability of professional visualization designs.

Anomaly cancellation and modularity: E8*E8*E8 case

In [5] and [19], the authors gave anomaly cancellation formulas for the gauge groups E8,E8*E8. In this paper, we mainly deal with the case of gauge group E8*E8*E8. Using the E8*E8*E8 bundle, we construct some modular forms over SL2(Z). By these modular forms, we get some new anomaly cancellation formulas of characteristic forms.

E(n)-Equivariant Cartesian Tensor Passing Potential

Machine learning potential (MLP) has been a popular topic in recent years for its potential to replace expensive first-principles calculations in some large systems. Meanwhile, message passing networks have gained significant attention due to their remarkable accuracy, and a wave of message passing networks based on Cartesian coordinates has emerged. However, the information of the node in these models is limited to scalars, vectors, and tensors. In this work, we proposed High-order Tensor Passing Potential (HotPP), an E(n) equivariant message passing neural network that extends the node embedding and message to an arbitrary order tensor. By performing some basic equivariant operations, high order tensors can be coupled very simply and thus the model can make direct predictions of high-order tensors such as dipole moments and polarizabilities without any modifications. Compared to high order tensor models based on spherical vectors, this network is simpler and can achieve comparable accuracy with much fewer parameters. The tests in several datasets demonstrate HotPP is a promising new approach that warrants further investigation.
