Coulomb effects on topological band inversion in the moiré of WSe$_2$/BAs heterobilayer

Quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator with large gap is highly desirable for potential spintronics application. Here we realize electrically tunable QSH insulator with large gap in van der Waals heterobilayer of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) and hexagonal BAs. When the type II band alignment gets inverted in an electric field, the hybridization by interlayer hopping between the spin-valley locked valence band edges in TMD and the BAs conduction band edges leads to a stacking-configuration dependent topological band inversion. In the non-interacting limit, the double spin degeneracy of BAs leaves an un-hybridized conduction band inside the gap, so the heterobilayer is a spin-valley locked metal instead of a QSH insulator. With the Coulomb interaction accounted in the double-layer geometry, the interaction with the hybridization induced electric dipole shifts this un-hybridized conduction band upwards in energy, giving rise to a sizable global QSH gap. Consequently, this heterobilayer provides a platform for engineering electrically tunable QSH insulator with sizable band gap. In the long period moiré pattern with the spatial variation of local stacking-configurations, the competition between Coulomb interaction and interlayer hopping leads to superstructures of QSH insulators and excitonic insulators.

Modelling and simulation of nabla fractional dynamic systems with nonzero initial conditions

The paper focuses on the numerical approximation of nabla fractional order systems with the conditions of nonzero initial instant and nonzero initial state. First, the inverse nabla Laplace transform is developed and the equivalent infinite dimensional frequency distributed models of discrete fractional order system are introduced. Then, resorting the nabla Laplace transform, the rationality of the finite dimensional frequency distributed model approaching the infinite one is illuminated. Based on this, an original algorithm to estimate the parameters of the approximate model is proposed with the help of vector fitting method. Additionally, the applicable object is extended from a sum operator to a general system. Three numerical examples are performed to illustrate the applicability and flexibility of the introduced methodology.

Discovery of room temperature ferromagnetism in metal-free organic semiconductors

Creating magnetic semiconductors that work at warm circumstance is still a great challenge in the physical sciences. Here, we report the discovery of ferromagnetism in the metal-free perylene diimide semiconductor, whose Curie temperature is higher than 400 Kelvin. A solvothermal approach is used to reduce and dissolve the rigid-backbone perylene diimide crystallites, and radical anion aggregates were fabricated by the subsequent self-assembly and oxidation process. Magnetic measurements exhibit the ferromagnetic ordering with the saturated magnetization of 0.48 $μ_{\rm B}$ per molecule and the appreciable magnetic anisotropy. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra suggest the ferromagnetism stems from $π$ orbitals of radicals. Our findings unambitiously demonstrate the long-range ferromagnetic ordering can survive at room temperature in organic semiconductors, although which are intuitively regarded to be nonmagnetic.

Nonuniform Timeslicing of Dynamic Graphs Based on Visual Complexity

Uniform timeslicing of dynamic graphs has been used due to its convenience and uniformity across the time dimension. However, uniform timeslicing does not take the data set into account, which can generate cluttered timeslices with edge bursts and empty timeslices with few interactions. The graph mining filed has explored nonuniform timeslicing methods specifically designed to preserve graph features for mining tasks. In this paper, we propose a nonuniform timeslicing approach for dynamic graph visualization. Our goal is to create timeslices of equal visual complexity. To this end, we adapt histogram equalization to create timeslices with a similar number of events, balancing the visual complexity across timeslices and conveying more important details of timeslices with bursting edges. A case study has been conducted, in comparison with uniform timeslicing, to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

The conformable fractional grey system model

The fractional order grey models (FGM) have appealed considerable interest of research in recent years due to its higher effectiveness and flexibility than the conventional grey models and other prediction models. However, the definitions of the fractional order accumulation (FOA) and difference (FOD) is computationally complex, which leads to difficulties for the theoretical analysis and applications. In this paper, the new definition of the FOA are proposed based on the definitions of Conformable Fractional Derivative, which is called the Conformable Fractional Accumulation (CFA), along with its inverse operation, the Conformable Fractional Difference (CFD). Then the new Conformable Fractional Grey Model (CFGM) based on CFA and CFD is introduced with detailed modelling procedures. The feasibility and simplicity and the CFGM are shown in the numerical example. And the at last the comprehensive real-world case studies of natural gas production forecasting in 11 countries are presented, and results show that the CFGM is much more effective than the existing FGM model in the 165 subcases.

Improved Zero-shot Neural Machine Translation via Ignoring Spurious Correlations

Zero-shot translation, translating between language pairs on which a Neural Machine Translation (NMT) system has never been trained, is an emergent property when training the system in multilingual settings. However, naive training for zero-shot NMT easily fails, and is sensitive to hyper-parameter setting. The performance typically lags far behind the more conventional pivot-based approach which translates twice using a third language as a pivot. In this work, we address the degeneracy problem due to capturing spurious correlations by quantitatively analyzing the mutual information between language IDs of the source and decoded sentences. Inspired by this analysis, we propose to use two simple but effective approaches: (1) decoder pre-training; (2) back-translation. These methods show significant improvement (4~22 BLEU points) over the vanilla zero-shot translation on three challenging multilingual datasets, and achieve similar or better results than the pivot-based approach.

Existence of solutions for critical Choquard problem with singular coefficients

In this paper, we investigate the following fractional Choquard type equation: \[ (- Δ)_p^s\, u = λ\frac{|u|^{r-2}u}{|x|^α}\,+γ\big(\int_Ω\frac{|u|^q}{|x-y|^μ}dy\big) |u|^{q-2}u \ \ \text{in } Ω,\ \ u = 0 \ \text{in } \R^N \setminus Ω, \] where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\R^N$ with Lipschitz boundary, $p>1$, $0 sp$, $0\leqα\leq sp$, $0<μ 0$, $p\leq r\leq p^*_α$, $p\leq 2q\leq 2p_{μ,s}^*$, $p_α^*=\frac{(N-α)p}{N-sp}$ and $p_{μ,s}^*=\frac{(N-\fracμ{2})p}{N-sp}$ are the fractional critical Hardy-Sobolev and the critical exponents in the sense of Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality, respectively. Under some suitable assumptions, positive and sign-changing solutions are obtained.

A Process Algebra for Games

Using formal tools in computer science to describe games is an interesting problem. We give games, exactly two person games, an axiomatic foundation based on the process algebra ACP (Algebra of Communicating Process). A fresh operator called opponent's alternative composition operator (OA) is introduced into ACP to describe game trees and game strategies, called GameACP. And its sound and complete axiomatic system is naturally established. To model the outcomes of games (the co-action of the player and the opponent), correspondingly in GameACP, the execution of GameACP processes, another operator called playing operator (PO) is extended into GameACP. We also establish a sound and complete axiomatic system for PO. To overcome the new occurred non-determinacy introduced by GameACP, we extend truly concurrent process algebra APTC for games called GameAPTC. Finally, we give the correctness theorem between the outcomes of games and the deductions of GameACP and GameAPTC processes.

Nonlinear optics in the electron-hole continuum in 2D semiconductors: two-photon transition, second harmonic generation and valley current injection

We investigate two-photon transitions to the electron-hole scattering continuum in monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides, and identify two contributions to this nonlinear optical process with opposite circularly polarized valley selection rules. In the non-interacting limit, the competition between the two contributions leads to a crossover of the selection rule with the increase of the two-photon energy. With the strong Coulomb interaction between the electron and hole, the two contributions excite electron-hole scattering states in orthogonal angular momentum channels, while the strength of the transition can be substantially enhanced by the interaction. Based on this picture of the two-photon transition, the second harmonic generation (SHG) in the electron-hole continuum is analyzed, where the Coulomb interaction is shown to greatly alter the relative strength of different cross-circular polarized SHG processes. Valley current injection by the quantum interference of one-photon and two-photon transition is also investigated in the presence of the strong Coulomb interaction, which significantly enhances the injection rate.

A novel perspective to gradient method: the fractional order approach

In this paper, we give some new thoughts about the classical gradient method (GM) and recall the proposed fractional order gradient method (FOGM). It is proven that the proposed FOGM holds a super convergence capacity and a faster convergence rate around the extreme point than the conventional GM. The property of asymptotic convergence of conventional GM and FOGM is also discussed. To achieve both a super convergence capability and an even faster convergence rate, a novel switching FOGM is proposed. Moreover, we extend the obtained conclusion to a more general case by introducing the concept of p-order Lipschitz continuous gradient and p-order strong convex. Numerous simulation examples are provided to validate the effectiveness of proposed methods.

SPI-Optimizer: an integral-Separated PI Controller for Stochastic Optimization

To overcome the oscillation problem in the classical momentum-based optimizer, recent work associates it with the proportional-integral (PI) controller, and artificially adds D term producing a PID controller. It suppresses oscillation with the sacrifice of introducing extra hyper-parameter. In this paper, we start by analyzing: why momentum-based method oscillates about the optimal point? and answering that: the fluctuation problem relates to the lag effect of integral (I) term. Inspired by the conditional integration idea in classical control society, we propose SPI-Optimizer, an integral-Separated PI controller based optimizer WITHOUT introducing extra hyperparameter. It separates momentum term adaptively when the inconsistency of current and historical gradient direction occurs. Extensive experiments demonstrate that SPIOptimizer generalizes well on popular network architectures to eliminate the oscillation, and owns competitive performance with faster convergence speed (up to 40% epochs reduction ratio ) and more accurate classification result on MNIST, CIFAR10, and CIFAR100 (up to 27.5% error reduction ratio) than the state-of-the-art methods.

A universal framework of GKYP lemma for singular fractional order systems

The well-known GKYP is widely used in system analysis, but for singular systems, especially singular fractional order systems, there is no corresponding theory, for which many control problems for this type of system can not be optimized in the limited frequency ranges. In this paper, a universal framework of finite frequency band GKYP lemma for singular fractional order systems is established. Then the bounded real lemma in the sense of L is derived for different frequency ranges. Furthermore, the corresponding controller is designed to improve the L performance index of singular fractional order systems. Three illustrative examples are given to demonstrate the correctness and effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Adaptive backstepping control for FOS with nonsmooth nonlinearities

This paper proposes an original solution to input saturation and dead zone of fractional order system. To overcome these nonsmooth nonlinearities, the control input is decomposed into two independent parts by introducing an intermediate variable, and thus the problem of dead zone and saturation transforms into the problem of disturbance and saturation afterwards. With the procedure of fractional order adaptive backstepping controller design, the bound of disturbance is estimated, and saturation is compensated by the virtual signal of an auxiliary system as well. In spite of the existence of nonsmooth nonlinearities, the output is guaranteed to track the reference signal asymptotically on the basis of our proposed method. Some simulation studies are carried out in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of method at last.

Broadband Analog Aggregation for Low-Latency Federated Edge Learning (Extended Version)

The popularity of mobile devices results in the availability of enormous data and computational resources at the network edge. To leverage the data and resources, a new machine learning paradigm, called edge learning, has emerged where learning algorithms are deployed at the edge for providing fast and intelligent services to mobile users. While computing speeds are advancing rapidly, the communication latency is becoming the bottleneck of fast edge learning. To address this issue, this work is focused on designing a low latency multi-access scheme for edge learning. We consider a popular framework, federated edge learning (FEEL), where edge-server and on-device learning are synchronized to train a model without violating user-data privacy. It is proposed that model updates simultaneously transmitted by devices over broadband channels should be analog aggregated "over-the-air" by exploiting the superposition property of a multi-access channel. Thereby, "interference" is harnessed to provide fast implementation of the model aggregation. This results in dramatical latency reduction compared with the traditional orthogonal access (i.e., OFDMA). In this work, the performance of FEEL is characterized targeting a single-cell random network. First, due to power alignment between devices as required for aggregation, a fundamental tradeoff is shown to exist between the update-reliability and the expected update-truncation ratio. This motivates the design of an opportunistic scheduling scheme for FEEL that selects devices within a distance threshold. This scheme is shown using real datasets to yield satisfactory learning performance in the presence of high mobility. Second, both the multi-access latency of the proposed analog aggregation and the OFDMA scheme are analyzed. Their ratio, which quantifies the latency reduction of the former, is proved to scale almost linearly with device population.

Current-driven Dynamics of Magnetic Skyrmion in Chiral Ferromagnetic Film with Spatially Modulated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction

The dynamics of magnetic skyrmion driven by spin-polarized current is theoretically studied in the chiral ferromagnetic film with spatially modulated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Three cases including linear, sinusoidal, and periodic rectangular modulations have been considered, where the increase, decrease, and the periodic modification of the size and velocity of the skyrmion have been observed in the microscopic simulations. These phenomena are well explained by the Thiele equation, where an effective force on the skyrmion is induced by the inhomogeneous Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The results here suggest that the dynamics of skyrmion can be manipulated by artificially tuning the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in chiral ferromagnetic film with material engineering methods, which will be useful to design skyrmion-based spintronics devices.
