Effects of soft interaction and non-isothermal boundary upon long-time dynamics of rarefied gas

In the paper, assuming that the motion of rarefied gases in a bounded domain is governed by the angular cutoff Boltzmann equation with diffuse reflection boundary, we study the effects of both soft intermolecular interaction and non-isothermal wall temperature upon the long-time dynamics of solutions to the corresponding initial boundary value problem. Specifically, we are devoted to proving the existence and dynamical stability of stationary solutions whenever the boundary temperature has suitably small variations around a positive constant. For the proof of existence, we introduce a new mild formulation of solutions to the steady boundary-value problem along the speeded backward bicharacteristic, and develop the uniform estimates on approximate solutions in both $L^2$ and $L^\infty$. Such mild formulation proves to be useful for treating the steady problem with soft potentials even over unbounded domains. In showing the dynamical stability, a new point is that we can obtain the sub-exponential time-decay rate in $L^\infty$ without losing any velocity weight, which is actually quite different from the classical results as in [11,43] for the torus domain and essentially due to the diffuse reflection boundary and the boundedness of the domain.

Multi-objective Non-cooperative Game Model for Cost-based Task Scheduling in Computational Grid

Task scheduling is an important and complex problem in computational grid. A computational grid often covers a range of different kinds of nodes, which offers a complex environment. There is a need to develop algorithms that can capture this complexity as while as can be easily implemented and used to solve a wide range of load-balancing scenarios. In this paper, we propose a game theory based algorithm to the grid load balancing problem on the principle of minimizing the cost of the grid. The grid load-balancing problem is treated as a non-cooperative game. The experiment results demonstrate that the game based algorithm has a desirable capability to reduce the cost of the grid.

The Design of Data Acquisition System for EAST Technical Diagnostic System

EAST (Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak) Technical Diagnostic System (TDS) is used to monitor the outlet temperature of all superconducting coils, in case of temperature anomaly, it will trigger safety interlock system to meet EAST device safety. The data acquisition system of TDS is in charge of continuous data acquisition of the nitrogen and helium temperature signals, TDS security alarm and long-term data storage. It supports continuous data acquisition and pulse data acquisition. The data acquisition of the nitrogen temperature signals is based on the PXI technology while obtaining the helium temperature signals from Lake Shore model 224 temperature monitors with VISA standard. After data conversion, all the data will be stored in MySQL and MDSPlus for long-term storage. It should output TDS fault signal and status signal to trigger the safety interlock system to take actions after threshold evaluation of key temperature signals. It publishes part of real-time TDS data to the cryogenic system and provides an information inquiry service to the TDS administrator. The system has been used in 2018 EAST campaign.

The effect of air exposure on SEY and surface composition of laser treated copper applied in accelerators

In this paper, the effect of air exposure and acetone cleaning on the secondary electron yield (SEY) of laser treated copper were investigated and discussed. The SEY of laser treated copper samples after acetone cleaning and air exposure were measured. After 10 to 21 months air exposure, the maximum SEY increased by about 11%~20%. Furthermore, changes of carbon, copper, and oxygen chemistry states from sample surface after acetone and air exposure were studied by means of XPS. The XPS results show that the concentration of Cu decreased by about 61%~70% after acetone cleaning and decreased by a further 36%~70% after 10 to 21 months air exposure. Moreover, the XPS measurement reflects the significant increase of the total percentages of C and O after acetone cleaning, and further increase after 10 to 21 months air exposure. The increase of SEY is explained in terms of the introduction of impurities, such as oxide, carbide etc.

On optimal tempered Lévy flight foraging

Optimal random foraging strategy has gained increasing concentrations. It is shown that Lévy flight is more efficient compared with the Brownian motion when the targets are sparse. However, standard Lévy flight generally cannot be followed in practice. In this paper, we assume that each flight of the forager is possibly interrupted by some uncertain factors, such as obstacles on the flight direction, natural enemies in the vision distance, and restrictions in the energy storage for each flight, and introduce the tempered Lévy distribution $p(l)\sim {\rm e}^{-ρl}l^{-μ}$. It is validated by both theoretical analyses and simulation results that a higher searching efficiency can be derived when a smaller $ρ$ or $μ$ is chosen. Moreover, by taking the flight time as the waiting time, the master equation of the random searching procedure can be obtained. Interestingly, we build two different types of master equations: one is the standard diffusion equation and the other one is the tempered fractional diffusion equation.

Reversible Truly Concurrent Process Algebra

We design a reversible version of truly concurrent process algebra CTC which is called RCTC. It has good properties modulo several kinds of strongly forward-reverse truly concurrent bisimulations and weakly forward-reverse truly concurrent bisimulations. These properties include monoid laws, static laws, new expansion law for strongly forward-reverse truly concurrent bisimulations, τlaws for weakly forward-reverse truly concurrent bisimulations, and congruences for strongly and weakly forward-reverse truly concurrent bisimulations.

SkyLens: Visual Analysis of Skyline on Multi-dimensional Data

Skyline queries have wide-ranging applications in fields that involve multi-criteria decision making, including tourism, retail industry, and human resources. By automatically removing incompetent candidates, skyline queries allow users to focus on a subset of superior data items (i.e., the skyline), thus reducing the decision-making overhead. However, users are still required to interpret and compare these superior items manually before making a successful choice. This task is challenging because of two issues. First, people usually have fuzzy, unstable, and inconsistent preferences when presented with multiple candidates. Second, skyline queries do not reveal the reasons for the superiority of certain skyline points in a multi-dimensional space. To address these issues, we propose SkyLens, a visual analytic system aiming at revealing the superiority of skyline points from different perspectives and at different scales to aid users in their decision making. Two scenarios demonstrate the usefulness of SkyLens on two datasets with a dozen of attributes. A qualitative study is also conducted to show that users can efficiently accomplish skyline understanding and comparison tasks with SkyLens.

Multi-scale prediction for robust hand detection and classification

In this paper, we present a multi-scale Fully Convolutional Networks (MSP-RFCN) to robustly detect and classify human hands under various challenging conditions. In our approach, the input image is passed through the proposed network to generate score maps, based on multi-scale predictions. The network has been specifically designed to deal with small objects. It uses an architecture based on region proposals generated at multiple scales. Our method is evaluated on challenging hand datasets, namely the Vision for Intelligent Vehicles and Applications (VIVA) Challenge and the Oxford hand dataset. It is compared against recent hand detection algorithms. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art detection for hands of various sizes.

Continuous Nucleation Dynamics of Magnetic Skyrmions in T-shaped Helimagnetic Nanojunction

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically-protected spin textures existing in helimagentic materials, which can be utilized as information carriers for non-volatile memories and logic circuits in spintronics. Searching simple and controllable way to create isolated magnetic skyrmions is desirable for further technology developments and industrial designs. Based on micromagnetic simulations, we show that the temporal dissipative structure can be developed in the T-shaped helimagnetic nanojunction when it is driven to the far-from-equilibrium regime by a constant spin-polarized current. Then the magnetic skyrmions can be continuously nucleated during the periodic magnetization dynamics of the nanojunction. We have systematically investigated the effects of current density, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, external magnetic field, and thermal fluctuation on the nucleation dynamics of the magnetic skyrmions. Our results here suggest a novel and promising mechanism to continuously create magnetic skyrmions for the development of skyrmion-based spintronics devices.

Search Engine Guided Non-Parametric Neural Machine Translation

In this paper, we extend an attention-based neural machine translation (NMT) model by allowing it to access an entire training set of parallel sentence pairs even after training. The proposed approach consists of two stages. In the first stage--retrieval stage--, an off-the-shelf, black-box search engine is used to retrieve a small subset of sentence pairs from a training set given a source sentence. These pairs are further filtered based on a fuzzy matching score based on edit distance. In the second stage--translation stage--, a novel translation model, called translation memory enhanced NMT (TM-NMT), seamlessly uses both the source sentence and a set of retrieved sentence pairs to perform the translation. Empirical evaluation on three language pairs (En-Fr, En-De, and En-Es) shows that the proposed approach significantly outperforms the baseline approach and the improvement is more significant when more relevant sentence pairs were retrieved.

Communicating Concurrent Processes

Process algebra CSP only permits a process to engage in one event on a moment and records this single event into the traces of the process. CSP cannot process events simultaneously, it treat the events occurred simultaneously as one single event. We modify CSP to process the events occurred simultaneously, which is called communicating concurrent processes (CCP).

Frequency adaptive metadynamics for the calculation of rare-event kinetics

The ability to predict accurate thermodynamic and kinetic properties in biomolecular systems is of both scientific and practical utility. While both remain very difficult, predictions of kinetics are particularly difficult because rates, in contrast to free energies, depend on the route taken and are thus not amenable to all enhanced sampling methods. It has recently been demonstrated that it is possible to recover kinetics through so called `infrequent metadynamics' simulations, where the simulations are biased in a way that minimally corrupts the dynamics of moving between metastable states. This method, however, requires the bias to be added slowly, thus hampering applications to processes with only modest separations of timescales. Here we present a frequency-adaptive strategy which bridges normal and infrequent metadynamics. We show that this strategy can improve the precision and accuracy of rate calculations at fixed computational cost, and should be able to extend rate calculations for much slower kinetic processes.

A Method to Compute the Sparse Graphs for Traveling Salesman Problem Based on Frequency Quadrilaterals

In this paper, an iterative algorithm is designed to compute the sparse graphs for traveling salesman problem (TSP) according to the frequency quadrilaterals so that the computation time of the algorithms for TSP will be lowered. At each computation cycle, the algorithm first computes the average frequency \bar{f}(e) of an edge e with N frequency quadrilaterals containing e in the input graph G(V,E). Then the 1/3|E| edges with low frequency are eliminated to generate the output graph with a smaller number of edges. The algorithm can be iterated several times and the original optimal Hamiltonian cycle is preserved with a high probability. The experiments demonstrate the algorithm computes the sparse graphs with the O(nlog_2n) edges containing the original optimal Hamiltonian cycle for most of the TSP instances in the TSPLIB. The computation time of the iterative algorithm is O(Nn^2).

Magnetostatics of Magnetic Skyrmion Crystals

Magnetic skyrmion crystals are topological magnetic textures arising in the chiral ferromagnetic materials with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The magnetostatic fields generated by magnetic skyrmion crystals are first studied by micromagnetic simulations. For Néel-type skyrmion crystals, the fields will vanish on one side of the crystal plane, which depend on the helicity; while for Bloch-type skyrmion crystals, the fields will distribute over both sides, and are identical for the two helicities. These features and the symmetry relations of the magetostatic fields are understood from the magnetic scalar potential and magnetic vector potential of the hybridized triple-Q state. The possibility to construct magnetostatic field at nanoscale by stacking chiral ferromagnetic layers with magnetic skyrmion crystals is also discussed, which may have potential applications to trap and manipulate neutral atoms with magnetic moments.

Semicrystalline block copolymers in rigid confining nanopores

We have investigated PLLA crystallization in lamellae-forming PS-b-PLLA confined to straight cylindrical nanopores under weak confinement (nanopore diameter D / equilibrium PS-b-PLLA period L0 larger than 4.8). Molten PS-b-PLLA predominantly forms concentric lamellae along the nanopores, but intertwined helices occur even for D/L0 = 7.3. Quenching PS-b-PLLA melts below TG(PS) results in PLLA cold crystallization strictly confined by the vitrified PS domains. Above TG(PS), PLLA crystallization is templated by the PS-b-PLLA melt domain structure in the nanopore centers, while adsorption on the nanopore walls stabilizes the outermost cylindrical PS-b-PLLA shell. In between, the nanoscopic PS-b-PLLA melt domain structure apparently ripens to reduce frustrations transmitted from the outermost immobilized PS-b-PLLA layer. The onset of PLLA crystallization catalyzes the ripening while transient ripening states are arrested by advancing PLLA crystallization. Certain helical structure motifs persist PLLA crystallization even if PS is soft. The direction of fastest PLLA crystal growth is preferentially aligned with the nanopore axes to the same degree as for PLLA homopolymer, independent of whether PS is vitreous or soft.

Advanced SERS sensor based on capillarity-assisted preconcentration through gold nanoparticles-decorated porous nanorods

A preconcentrating surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor for the analysis of liquid-soaked tissue, tiny liquid droplets and thin liquid films without the necessity to collect the analyte is reported. The SERS sensor is based on a blockcopolymer membrane containing a spongy-continuous pore system. The sensor's upper side is an array of porous nanorods having tips functionalized with Au nanoparticles. Capillarity in combination with directional evaporation drives the analyte solution in contact with the flat yet nanoporous underside of the SERS sensor through the continuous nanopore system toward the nanorod tips where non-volatile components of the analyte solution precipitate at the Au nanoparticles. The nanorod architecture increases the sensor surface in the detection volume and facilitates analyte preconcentration driven by directional solvent evaporation. The model analyte 5,5'-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid) can be detected in a 1 x 10-3 m solution about 300 ms after the sensor is brought into contact with the solution. Moreover, a sensitivity of 0.1 ppm for the detection of the dissolved model analyte is achieved.
