Tree models for difference and change detection in a complex environment

A new family of tree models is proposed, which we call "differential trees." A differential tree model is constructed from multiple data sets and aims to detect distributional differences between them. The new methodology differs from the existing difference and change detection techniques in its nonparametric nature, model construction from multiple data sets, and applicability to high-dimensional data. Through a detailed study of an arson case in New Zealand, where an individual is known to have been laying vegetation fires within a certain time period, we illustrate how these models can help detect changes in the frequencies of event occurrences and uncover unusual clusters of events in a complex environment.

Noncommutative Residue and sub-Dirac Operators for Foliations

In this paper, we define lower dimensional volumes associated to sub-Dirac operators for foliations. In some cases, we compute these lower dimensional volumes. We also prove the Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorems for foliations with or without boundary. As a corollary, we give an explanation of the gravitational action for the Robertson-Walker space $[a, b]\times_{f}M^{3}$.

Ferroelectric Instability under Screened Coulomb Interactions

We explore the effect of charge carrier doping on ferroelectricity using density functional calculations and phenomenological modeling. By considering a prototypical ferroelectric material, BaTiO3, we demonstrate that ferroelectric displacements are sustained up to the critical concentration of 0.11 electron per unit cell volume. This result is consistent with experimental observations and reveals that the ferroelectric phase and conductivity can coexist. Our investigations show that the ferroelectric instability requires only a short-range portion of the Coulomb force with an interaction range of the order of the lattice constant. These results provide a new insight into the origin of ferroelectricity in displacive ferroelectrics and open opportunities for using doped ferroelectrics in novel electronic devices.

Curvature of multiply warped products with an affine connection

In this paper, we study the Einstein multiply warped products with a semi-symmetric non-metric connection and the multiply warped products with a semi-symmetric non-metric connection with constant scalar curvature, we apply our results to generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes with a semi-symmetric non-metric connection and generalized Kasner spacetimes with a semi-symmetric non-metric connection and find some new examples of Einstein affine manifolds and affine manifolds with constant scalar curvature.ß We also consider the multiply warped products with an affine connection with a zero torsion.

Multiply twisted products

In this paper, we compute the index form of the multiply twisted products. We study the Killing vector fields on the multiply twisted product manifolds and determine the Killing vector fields in some cases. We compute the curvature of the multiply twisted products with a semi-symmetric metric connection and show that the mixed Ricci-flat multiply twisted products with a semi-symmetric metric connection can be expressed as multiply warped products. We also study the Einstein multiply warped products with a semi-symmetric metric connection and the multiply warped products with a semi-symmetric metric connection with constant scalar curvature, we apply our results to generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes with a semi-symmetric metric connection and generalized Kasner spacetimes with a semi-symmetric metric connection and find some new examples of Einstein affine manifolds and affine manifolds with constant scalar curvature. We also consider the multiply twisted product Finsler manifolds and we get some interesting properties of these spaces.

Tensor-based projection depth

The conventional definition of a depth function is vector-based. In this paper, a novel projection depth (PD) technique directly based on tensors, such as matrices, is instead proposed. Tensor projection depth (TPD) is still an ideal depth function and its computation can be achieved through the iteration of PD. Furthermore, we also discuss the cases for sparse samples and higher order tensors. Experimental results in data classification with the two projection depths show that TPD performs much better than PD for data with a natural tensor form, and even when the data have a natural vector form, TPD appears to perform no worse than PD.

On Multi-Dimensional Sonic-Subsonic Flow

In this paper, a compensated compactness framework is established for sonic-subsonic approximate solutions to the $n$-dimensional$(n\geq 2)$ Euler equations for steady irrotational flow that may contain stagnation points. This compactness framework holds provided that the approximate solutions are uniformly bounded and satisfy $H^{-1}_{loc}(Ω)$ compactness conditions. As illustration, we show the existence of sonic-subsonic weak solution to n-dimensional$(n\geq 2)$ Euler equations for steady irrotational flow past obstacles or through an infinitely long nozzle. This is the first result concerning the sonic-subsonic limit for $n$-dimension$(n\geq 3)$.

The Limit of the Boltzmann Equation to the Euler Equations for Riemann Problems

The convergence of the Boltzmann equaiton to the compressible Euler equations when the Knudsen number tends to zero has been a long standing open problem in the kinetic theory. In the setting of Riemann solution that contains the generic superposition of shock, rarefaction wave and contact discontinuity to the Euler equations, we succeed in justifying this limit by introducing hyperbolic waves with different solution backgrounds to capture the extra masses carried by the hyperbolic approximation of the rarefaction wave and the diffusion approximation of contact discontinuity.

Quantum Dynamics of a Nanomagnet driven by Spin-Polarized Current

A quantum theory of magnetization dynamics of a nanomagnet as a sequence of scatterings of each electron spin with the macrospin state of the magnetization results in each encounter a probability distribution of the magnetization recoil state associated with each outgoing state of the electron. The quantum trajectory of the magnetization contains the average motion tending in the large spin limit to the semi-classical results of spin transfer torque and the fluctuations giving rise to a quantum magnetization noise and an additional noise traceable to the current noise.

On the Geometry of Tangent Bundles with the Rescaled Metric

For a Riemannian manifold $M$, we determine some curvature properties of a tangent bundle equipped with the rescaled metric. The main aim of this paper is to give explicit formulae for the rescaled metric on $TM$, and investigate the geodesics on the tangent bundle with respect to the rescaled Sasaki metric.

Planar Traveling Waves For Nonlocal Dispersion Equation With Monostable Nonlinearity

In this paper, we study a class of nonlocal dispersion equation with monostable nonlinearity in $n$-dimensional space u_t - J\ast u +u+d(u(t,x))= \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} f_β(y) b(u(t-τ,x-y)) dy, u(s,x)=u_0(s,x), s\in[-τ,0], \ x\in \mathbb{R}^n} \] where the nonlinear functions $d(u)$ and $b(u)$ possess the monostable characters like Fisher-KPP type, $f_β(x)$ is the heat kernel, and the kernel $J(x)$ satisfies ${\hat J}(ξ)=1-\mathcal{K}|ξ|^α+o(|ξ|^α)$ for $0<α\le 2$. After establishing the existence for both the planar traveling waves $ϕ(x\cdot{\bf e}+ct)$ for $c\ge c_*$ ($c_*$ is the critical wave speed) and the solution $u(t,x)$ for the Cauchy problem, as well as the comparison principles, we prove that, all noncritical planar wavefronts $ϕ(x\cdot{\bf e}+ct)$ are globally stable with the exponential convergence rate $t^{-n/α}e^{-μ_τ}$ for $μ_τ>0$, and the critical wavefronts $ϕ(x\cdot{\bf e}+c_*t)$ are globally stable in the algebraic form $t^{-n/α}$. The adopted approach is Fourier transform and the weighted energy method with a suitably selected weight function. These rates are optimal and the stability results significantly develop the existing studies for nonlocal dispersion equations.

Double Conformal Invariants and the Wodzicki Residue

For compact real manifolds, a new double conformal invariant is constructed using the Wodzicki residue and the $d$ operator in the framework of Connes. In the flat case, we compute this double conformal invariant, and in some special cases, we also compute this double conformal invariants. For complex manifolds, a new double conformal invariant is constructed using the Wodzicki residue and the $\bar{\partial}$ operator in the same way, and this double conformal invariant is computed in the flat case.
