Flower Interaction Subsystem for a Precision Pollination Robot

Robotic pollinators not only can aid farmers by providing more cost effective and stable methods for pollinating plants but also benefit crop production in environments not suitable for bees such as greenhouses, growth chambers, and in outer space. Robotic pollination requires a high degree of precision and autonomy but few systems have addressed both of these aspects in practice. In this paper, a fully autonomous robot is presented, capable of precise pollination of individual small flowers. Experimental results show that the proposed system is able to achieve a 93.1% detection accuracy and a 76.9% 'pollination' success rate tested with high-fidelity artificial flowers.

A Hybrid Cache Architecture for Meeting Per-Tenant Performance Goals in a Private Cloud

The in-memory cache system is an important component in a cloud for the data access performance. As the tenants may have different performance goals for data access depending on the nature of their tasks, effectively managing the memory cache is a crucial concern in such a shared computing environment. Two extreme methods for managing the memory cache are unlimited sharing and complete isolation, both of which would be inefficient with the expensive storage complexity to meet the per-tenant performance requirement. In this paper, we present a new cache model that incorporates global caching (based on unlimited sharing) and static caching (offering complete isolation) for a private cloud, in which it is critical to offer the guaranteed performance while minimizing the operating cost. This paper also presents a cache insertion algorithm tailored to the proposed cache model. From an extensive set of experiments conducted on the simulation and emulation settings, the results confirm the validity of the presented cache architecture and insertion algorithm showing the optimized use of the cache space for meeting the per-tenant performance requirement.

Thermal Stability Enhancement in Epitaxial α-Sn Films by Strain Engineering

Exploring new topological materials with large topological nontrivial bandgaps and simple composition is attractive for both theoretical investigation and experimental realization. Recently alpha tin (α-Sn) has been predicted to be such a candidate and it can be tuned to be either a topological insulator or a Dirac semimetal by applying appropriate strain. However, free-standing α-Sn is only stable below 13.2 °C. In this study, a series of high-quality α-Sn films with different thicknesses have been successfully grown on InSb substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Confirmed by both X-ray diffraction (XRD) and reciprocal space mapping (RSM), all the films remained fully strained up to 4000 Å, proving the strain effect from the substrate. Remarkably, the single-crystalline α phase can persist up to 170 °C for the 200 Å thick sample. The critical temperature where the α phase disappears decreases as the film thickness increases, showing the thermal stabilization can be engineered by varying the α-Sn thickness. A plastic flow model taking the work hardening into account is introduced to explain this dependence, assuming the strain relaxation and the phase transition occur successively. This enhanced thermal stability is prerequisite for above room-temperature characterization and application of this material system.

Another look into the Wong-Zakai Theorem for Stochastic Heat Equation

Consider the heat equation driven by a smooth, Gaussian random potential: \begin{align*} \partial_t u_{\varepsilon}=\tfrac12Δu_{\varepsilon}+u_{\varepsilon}(ξ_{\varepsilon}-c_{\varepsilon}), \ \ t>0, x\in\mathbb{R}, \end{align*} where $ξ_{\varepsilon}$ converges to a spacetime white noise, and $c_{\varepsilon} $ is a diverging constant chosen properly. For any $ n\geq 1 $, we prove that $ u_{\varepsilon} $ converges in $ L^n $ to the solution of the stochastic heat equation. Our proof is probabilistic, hence provides another perspective of the general result of Hairer and Pardoux \cite{Hairer15a}, for the special case of the stochastic heat equation. We also discuss the transition from homogenization to stochasticity.

Learning-based Dynamic Cache Management in a Cloud

Caches are an important component of modern computing systems given their significant impact on performance. In particular, caches play a key role in the cloud due to the nature of large-scale, data-intensive processing. One of the key challenges for the cloud providers is how to share the caching capacity among tenants, under the circumstance that each often requires a different degree of quality of service (QoS) with respect to data access performance. The invariant is that the individual tenants' QoS requirements should be satisfied while the cache usage is optimized in a system-wide manner. In this paper, we introduce a learning-based approach for dynamic cache management in a cloud, which is based on the estimation of data access pattern of a tenant and the prediction of cache performance for the access pattern in question. We consider a variety of probability distributions to estimate the data access pattern, and examine a set of learning-based regression techniques to predict the cache hit rate for the access pattern. The predicted cache hit rate is then used to make a decision whether reallocating cache space is needed to meet the QoS requirement for the tenant. Our experimental results with an extensive set of synthetic traces and the YCSB benchmark show that the proposed method consistently optimizes the cache space while satisfying the QoS requirement.

Design of an Autonomous Precision Pollination Robot

Precision robotic pollination systems can not only fill the gap of declining natural pollinators, but can also surpass them in efficiency and uniformity, helping to feed the fast-growing human population on Earth. This paper presents the design and ongoing development of an autonomous robot named "BrambleBee", which aims at pollinating bramble plants in a greenhouse environment. Partially inspired by the ecology and behavior of bees, BrambleBee employs state-of-the-art localization and mapping, visual perception, path planning, motion control, and manipulation techniques to create an efficient and robust autonomous pollination system.

Game-Theoretic Optimization for Machine-Type Communications Under QoS Guarantee

Massive machine-type communication (mMTC) is a new focus of services in fifth generation (5G) communication networks. The associated stringent delay requirement of end-to-end (E2E) service deliveries poses technical challenges. In this paper, we propose a joint random access and data transmission protocol for mMTC to guarantee E2E service quality of different traffic types. First, we develop a priority-queueing-based access class barring (ACB) model and a novel effective capacity is derived. Then, we model the priority-queueing-based ACB policy as a non-cooperative game, where utility is defined as the difference between effective capacity and access penalty price. We prove the existence and uniqueness of Nash equilibrium (NE) of the non-cooperative game, which is also a sub-modular utility maximization problem and can be solved by a greedy updating algorithm with convergence to the unique NE. To further improve the efficiency, we present a price-update algorithm, which converges to a local optimum. Simulations demonstrate the performance of the derived effective capacity and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Distributed Layered Grant-Free Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access for Massive MTC

Grant-free transmission is considered as a promising technology to support sporadic data transmission in massive machine-type communications (mMTC). Due to the distributed manner, high collision probability is an inherent drawback of grant-free access techniques. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is expected to be used in uplink grant-free transmission, multiplying connection opportunities by exploiting power domain resources. However, it is usually applied for coordinated transmissions where the base station performs coordination with full channel state information, which is not suitable for grant-free techniques. In this paper, we propose a novel distributed layered grant-free NOMA framework. Under this framework, we divide the cell into different layers based on predetermined inter-layer received power difference. A distributed layered grant-free NOMA based hybrid transmission scheme is proposed to reduce collision probability. Moreover, we derive the closed-form expression of connection throughput. A joint access control and NOMA layer selection (JACNLS) algorithm is proposed to solve the connection throughput optimization problem. The numerical and simulation results reveal that, when the system is overloaded, our proposed scheme outperforms the grant-free-only scheme by three orders of magnitude in terms of expected connection throughput and outperforms coordinated OMA transmission schemes by 31.25\% with only 0.0189\% signaling overhead of the latter.

Fluctuations of random semi-linear advection equations

We consider a semi-linear advection equation driven by a highly-oscillatory space-time Gaussian random field, with the randomness affecting both the drift and the nonlinearity. In the linear setting, classical results show that the characteristics converge in distribution to a homogenized Brownian motion, hence the point-wise law of the solution is close to a functional of the Brownian motion. Our main result is that the nonlinearity plays the role of a \emph{random diffeomorphism}, and the point-wise limiting distribution is obtained by applying the diffeomorphism to the limit in the linear setting.

Multi-task WaveNet: A Multi-task Generative Model for Statistical Parametric Speech Synthesis without Fundamental Frequency Conditions

This paper introduces an improved generative model for statistical parametric speech synthesis (SPSS) based on WaveNet under a multi-task learning framework. Different from the original WaveNet model, the proposed Multi-task WaveNet employs the frame-level acoustic feature prediction as the secondary task and the external fundamental frequency prediction model for the original WaveNet can be removed. Therefore the improved WaveNet can generate high-quality speech waveforms only conditioned on linguistic features. Multi-task WaveNet can produce more natural and expressive speech by addressing the pitch prediction error accumulation issue and possesses more succinct inference procedures than the original WaveNet. Experimental results prove that the SPSS method proposed in this paper can achieve better performance than the state-of-the-art approach utilizing the original WaveNet in both objective and subjective preference tests.

The Edwards-Wilkinson limit of the random heat equation in dimensions three and higher

We consider the heat equation with a multiplicative Gaussian potential in dimensions $d\geq 3$. We show that the renormalized solution converges to the solution of a deterministic diffusion equation with an effective diffusivity. We also prove that the renormalized large scale random fluctuations are described by the Edwards-Wilkinson model, that is, the stochastic heat equation (SHE) with additive white noise, with an effective variance.

Effective Capacity Analysis in Ultra-Dense Wireless Networks with Random Interference

Ultra-dense networks (UDNs) provide a promising paradigm to cope with exponentially increasing mobile traffic. However, little work has to date considered unsaturated traffic with quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. This paper presents a new cross-layer analytical model to capture the unsaturated traffic of a UDN in the presence of QoS requirements. The effective capacity (EC) of the UDN is derived, taking into account small-scale channel fading and possible interference. Key properties of the EC are revealed. The amount of traffic impacts effective capacity of the UDN due to the sophisticated interactions among small base stations operating in the same frequency. The maximization of total effective capacity is formulated as a non-cooperative game in the paper. The best-response function is derived, iteratively searching the Nash equilibrium point. System simulation results indicate that our proposed model is accurate. The simulations also show the maximum allowed arrival rate with the QoS guarantee, compared with the full interference model.

Efficient Randomized Algorithms for the Fixed-Precision Low-Rank Matrix Approximation

Randomized algorithms for low-rank matrix approximation are investigated, with the emphasis on the fixed-precision problem and computational efficiency for handling large matrices. The algorithms are based on the so-called QB factorization, where Q is an orthonormal matrix. Firstly, a mechanism for calculating the approximation error in Frobenius norm is proposed, which enables efficient adaptive rank determination for large and/or sparse matrix. It can be combined with any QB-form factorization algorithm in which B's rows are incrementally generated. Based on the blocked randQB algorithm by P.-G. Martinsson and S. Voronin, this results in an algorithm called randQB EI. Then, we further revise the algorithm to obtain a pass-efficient algorithm, randQB FP, which is mathematically equivalent to the existing randQB algorithms and also suitable for the fixed-precision problem. Especially, randQB FP can serve as a single-pass algorithm for calculating leading singular values, under certain condition. With large and/or sparse test matrices, we have empirically validated the merits of the proposed techniques, which exhibit remarkable speedup and memory saving over the blocked randQB algorithm. We have also demonstrated that the single-pass algorithm derived by randQB FP is much more accurate than an existing single-pass algorithm. And with data from a scenic image and an information retrieval application, we have shown the advantages of the proposed algorithms over the adaptive range finder algorithm for solving the fixed-precision problem.

Optimal Scheduling across Heterogeneous Air Interfaces of LTE/WiFi Aggregation

LTE/WiFi Aggregation (LWA) provides a promising approach to relieve data traffic congestion in licensed bands by leveraging unlicensed bands. Critical challenges arise from provisioning quality-of-service (QoS) through heterogenous interfaces of licensed and unlicensed bands. In this paper, we minimize the required licensed spectrum without degrading the QoS in the presence of multiple users. Specifically, the aggregated effective capacity of LWA is firstly derived by developing a new semi-Markov model. Multi-band resource allocation with the QoS guarantee between the licensed and unlicensed bands is formulated to minimize the licensed bandwidth, convexified by exploiting Block Coordinate Descent (BCD) and difference of two convex functions (DC) programming, and solved efficiently with a new iterative algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate significant performance gain of the proposed approach over heuristic alternatives.
