ProME: An Integrated Computational Platform for Material Properties at Extremes and Its Application in Multicomponent Alloy Design

We have built an integrated computational platform for material properties at extreme conditions, ProME (Professional Materials at Extremes) v1.0, which enables integrated calculations for multicomponent alloys, covering high temperatures up to tens of thousands of Kelvin, high pressures up to millions of atmospheres, and high strain rates up to millions per second. A series of software packages have been developed and integrated into ProME v1.0, including ABC (AI-Based Crystal search) for crystal structure search under pressure, SAE (Similar Atomic Environment) for disordered configuration modeling, MFP$^2$ (Multiphase Fast Previewer by Mean-Field Potential) for multiphase thermodynamic properties, HTEM (High-throughput Toolkit for Elasticity Modeling) for thermo-elastic properties, TREX (TRansport at Extremes) for electrical and thermal conductivity, Hippos (High plastic phase model software) for phase-field simulation of microstructure evolution under high strain rates, and AutoCalphad for modeling and optimization of phase diagrams with variable compositions. ProME v1.0 has been applied to design the composition of the quaternary alloys Platinum-Iridium-Aluminum-Chromium (Pt-Ir-Al-Cr) for engine nozzles of aerospace attitude-orbit control, achieving high-temperature strength comparable to the currently used Pt-Ir alloys but with significantly reduced costs for raw materials. ProME offers crucial support for advancing both fundamental scientific understanding and industrial innovation in materials research and development.

Probing orbital magnetism of a kagome metal CsV3Sb5 by a tuning fork resonator

The recently discovered kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ exhibits a complex phase diagram that encompasses frustrated magnetism, topological charge density wave (CDW), and superconductivity. One CDW state that breaks time-reversal symmetry was proposed in this compound, while the exact nature of the putative magnetic state remains elusive. To examine the thermodynamic state of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ and assess the character of the associated magnetism, we conducted tuning fork resonator measurements of magnetotropic susceptibility over a broad range of angles, magnetic fields, and temperature. We found a cascade of phase transition in the CDW phase. Of particular interest is a highly anisotropic magnetic structure that arises below about 30~K, with a magnetic moment along the $c$-axis that has an extremely small magnitude. This magnetic state demonstrates extremely slow dynamics and small saturate field, all suggest that electronic phase below 30~K breaks time reversal symmetry and has an unconventional origin.

Quantum Acoustics with Superconducting Qubits in the Multimode Transition-Coupling Regime

Hybrid mechanical-superconducting systems for quantum information processing have attracted significant attention due to their potential applications. In such systems, the weak coupling regime, dominated by dissipation, has been extensively studied. The strong coupling regime, where coherent energy exchange exceeds losses, has also been widely explored. However, the transition-coupling regime, which lies between the above two and exhibits rich, unique physics, remains underexplored. In this study, we fabricate a tunable coupling device to investigate the coupling of a superconducting transmon qubit to a seven-mode surface acoustic wave resonator (SAWR), with a particular focus on the transition-coupling regime. Through a series of phonon oscillation experiments and studies in the dispersive regime, we systematically characterize the performance of the SAWR. We then explore the complex dynamics of energy exchange between the qubit and the mechanical modes, highlighting the interplay between dissipation and coherence. Finally, we propose a protocol for qubit readout and fast reset with a multimode mechanical cavity using one mode for readout and another mode for reset. We have demonstrated in simulation that the qubit achieves both fast reset and high coherence performance when the qubit is coupled to the reset mode in the transition-coupling regime.

CombAlign: Enhancing Model Expressiveness in Unsupervised Graph Alignment

Unsupervised graph alignment finds the node correspondence between a pair of attributed graphs by only exploiting graph structure and node features. One category of recent studies first computes the node representation and then matches nodes with the largest embedding-based similarity, while the other category reduces the problem to optimal transport (OT) via Gromov-Wasserstein learning. However, it remains largely unexplored in the model expressiveness, as well as how theoretical expressivity impacts prediction accuracy. We investigate the model expressiveness from two aspects. First, we characterize the model's discriminative power in distinguishing matched and unmatched node pairs across two graphs. Second, we study the model's capability of guaranteeing node matching properties such as one-to-one matching and mutual alignment. Motivated by our theoretical analysis, we put forward a hybrid approach named CombAlign with stronger expressive power. Specifically, we enable cross-dimensional feature interaction for OT-based learning and propose an embedding-based method inspired by the Weisfeiler-Lehman test. We also apply non-uniform marginals obtained from the embedding-based modules to OT as priors for more expressiveness. Based on that, we propose a traditional algorithm-based refinement, which combines our OT and embedding-based predictions using the ensemble learning strategy and reduces the problem to maximum weight matching. With carefully designed edge weights, we ensure those matching properties and further enhance prediction accuracy. By extensive experiments, we demonstrate a significant improvement of 14.5% in alignment accuracy compared to state-of-the-art approaches and confirm the soundness of our theoretical analysis.

Local Behavior of Fractional Equations in Grushin-type Spaces

In this paper, we establish the De Giorgi-Nash-Moser theory for a wide class of nonlinear equations driven by nonlocal, possibly degenerate, integro-differential operators, with the fractional $p$-Laplacian operator in Grushin-type spaces $\mathbb{G}^n$ serving as a prototypical example. Among other results, we prove that the weak solutions to this class of problems are both bounded and Hölder continuous, while also establishing general estimates, such as fractional Caccioppoli-type estimates with tail terms and logarithmic-type bounds.

ADT: Tuning Diffusion Models with Adversarial Supervision

Diffusion models have achieved outstanding image generation by reversing a forward noising process to approximate true data distributions. During training, these models predict diffusion scores from noised versions of true samples in a single forward pass, while inference requires iterative denoising starting from white noise. This training-inference divergences hinder the alignment between inference and training data distributions, due to potential prediction biases and cumulative error accumulation. To address this problem, we propose an intuitive but effective fine-tuning framework, called Adversarial Diffusion Tuning (ADT), by stimulating the inference process during optimization and aligning the final outputs with training data by adversarial supervision. Specifically, to achieve robust adversarial training, ADT features a siamese-network discriminator with a fixed pre-trained backbone and lightweight trainable parameters, incorporates an image-to-image sampling strategy to smooth discriminative difficulties, and preserves the original diffusion loss to prevent discriminator hacking. In addition, we carefully constrain the backward-flowing path for back-propagating gradients along the inference path without incurring memory overload or gradient explosion. Finally, extensive experiments on Stable Diffusion models (v1.5, XL, and v3), demonstrate that ADT significantly improves both distribution alignment and image quality.

Materials Discovery in Combinatorial and High-throughput Synthesis and Processing: A New Frontier for SPM

For over three decades, scanning probe microscopy (SPM) has been a key method for exploring material structures and functionalities at nanometer and often atomic scales in ambient, liquid, and vacuum environments. Historically, SPM applications have predominantly been downstream, with images and spectra serving as a qualitative source of data on the microstructure and properties of materials, and in rare cases of fundamental physical knowledge. However, the fast-growing developments in accelerated material synthesis via self-driving labs and established applications such as combinatorial spread libraries are poised to change this paradigm. Rapid synthesis demands matching capabilities to probe structure and functionalities of materials on small scales and with high throughput. SPM inherently meets these criteria, offering a rich and diverse array of data from a single measurement. Here, we overview SPM methods applicable to these emerging applications and emphasize their quantitativeness, focusing on piezoresponse force microscopy, electrochemical strain microscopy, conductive, and surface photovoltage measurements. We discuss the challenges and opportunities ahead, asserting that SPM will play a crucial role in closing the loop from material prediction and synthesis to characterization.

APSQ: Additive Partial Sum Quantization with Algorithm-Hardware Co-Design

DNN accelerators, significantly advanced by model compression and specialized dataflow techniques, have marked considerable progress. However, the frequent access of high-precision partial sums (PSUMs) leads to excessive memory demands in architectures utilizing input/weight stationary dataflows. Traditional compression strategies have typically overlooked PSUM quantization, which may account for 69% of power consumption. This study introduces a novel Additive Partial Sum Quantization (APSQ) method, seamlessly integrating PSUM accumulation into the quantization framework. A grouping strategy that combines APSQ with PSUM quantization enhanced by a reconfigurable architecture is further proposed. The APSQ performs nearly lossless on NLP and CV tasks across BERT, Segformer, and EfficientViT models while compressing PSUMs to INT8. This leads to a notable reduction in energy costs by 28-87%. Extended experiments on LLaMA2-7B demonstrate the potential of APSQ for large language models. Code is available at https://github.com/Yonghao-Tan/APSQ.

The Power of the Pareto Front: Balancing Uncertain Rewards for Adaptive Experimentation in scanning probe microscopy

Automated experimentation has the potential to revolutionize scientific discovery, but its effectiveness depends on well-defined optimization targets, which are often uncertain or probabilistic in real-world settings. In this work, we demonstrate the application of Multi-Objective Bayesian Optimization (MOBO) to balance multiple, competing rewards in autonomous experimentation. Using scanning probe microscopy (SPM) imaging, one of the most widely used and foundational SPM modes, we show that MOBO can optimize imaging parameters to enhance measurement quality, reproducibility, and efficiency. A key advantage of this approach is the ability to compute and analyze the Pareto front, which not only guides optimization but also provides physical insights into the trade-offs between different objectives. Additionally, MOBO offers a natural framework for human-in-the-loop decision-making, enabling researchers to fine-tune experimental trade-offs based on domain expertise. By standardizing high-quality, reproducible measurements and integrating human input into AI-driven optimization, this work highlights MOBO as a powerful tool for advancing autonomous scientific discovery.

Batched Stochastic Bandit for Nondegenerate Functions

This paper studies batched bandit learning problems for nondegenerate functions. We introduce an algorithm that solves the batched bandit problem for nondegenerate functions near-optimally. More specifically, we introduce an algorithm, called Geometric Narrowing (GN), whose regret bound is of order $\widetilde{\mathcal{O}} ( A_{+}^d \sqrt{T} )$. In addition, GN only needs $\mathcal{O} (\log \log T)$ batches to achieve this regret. We also provide lower bound analysis for this problem. More specifically, we prove that over some (compact) doubling metric space of doubling dimension $d$: 1. For any policy $π$, there exists a problem instance on which $π$ admits a regret of order $Ω ( A_-^d \sqrt{T})$; 2. No policy can achieve a regret of order $ A_-^d \sqrt{T} $ over all problem instances, using less than $ Ω( \log \log T ) $ rounds of communications. Our lower bound analysis shows that the GN algorithm achieves near optimal regret with minimal number of batches.

QEMesh: Employing A Quadric Error Metrics-Based Representation for Mesh Generation

Mesh generation plays a crucial role in 3D content creation, as mesh is widely used in various industrial applications. Recent works have achieved impressive results but still face several issues, such as unrealistic patterns or pits on surfaces, thin parts missing, and incomplete structures. Most of these problems stem from the choice of shape representation or the capabilities of the generative network. To alleviate these, we extend PoNQ, a Quadric Error Metrics (QEM)-based representation, and propose a novel model, QEMesh, for high-quality mesh generation. PoNQ divides the shape surface into tiny patches, each represented by a point with its normal and QEM matrix, which preserves fine local geometry information. In our QEMesh, we regard these elements as generable parameters and design a unique latent diffusion model containing a novel multi-decoder VAE for PoNQ parameters generation. Given the latent code generated by the diffusion model, three parameter decoders produce several PoNQ parameters within each voxel cell, and an occupancy decoder predicts which voxel cells containing parameters to form the final shape. Extensive evaluations demonstrate that our method generates results with watertight surfaces and is comparable to state-of-the-art methods in several main metrics.

Mozualization: Crafting Music and Visual Representation with Multimodal AI

In this work, we introduce Mozualization, a music generation and editing tool that creates multi-style embedded music by integrating diverse inputs, such as keywords, images, and sound clips (e.g., segments from various pieces of music or even a playful cat's meow). Our work is inspired by the ways people express their emotions -- writing mood-descriptive poems or articles, creating drawings with warm or cool tones, or listening to sad or uplifting music. Building on this concept, we developed a tool that transforms these emotional expressions into a cohesive and expressive song, allowing users to seamlessly incorporate their unique preferences and inspirations. To evaluate the tool and, more importantly, gather insights for its improvement, we conducted a user study involving nine music enthusiasts. The study assessed user experience, engagement, and the impact of interacting with and listening to the generated music.

Scale-adaptive UAV Geo-localization via Height-aware Partition Learning

UAV Geo-Localization faces significant challenges due to the drastic appearance discrepancy between dronecaptured images and satellite views. Existing methods typically assume a consistent scaling factor across views and rely on predefined partition alignment to extract viewpoint-invariant representations through part-level feature construction. However, this scaling assumption often fails in real-world scenarios, where variations in drone flight states lead to scale mismatches between cross-view images, resulting in severe performance degradation. To address this issue, we propose a scale-adaptive partition learning framework that leverages known drone flight height to predict scale factors and dynamically adjust feature extraction. Our key contribution is a height-aware adjustment strategy, which calculates the relative height ratio between drone and satellite views, dynamically adjusting partition sizes to explicitly align semantic information between partition pairs. This strategy is integrated into a Scale-adaptive Local Partition Network (SaLPN), building upon an existing square partition strategy to extract both finegrained and global features. Additionally, we propose a saliencyguided refinement strategy to enhance part-level features, further improving retrieval accuracy. Extensive experiments validate that our height-aware, scale-adaptive approach achieves stateof-the-art geo-localization accuracy in various scale-inconsistent scenarios and exhibits strong robustness against scale variations. The code will be made publicly available.

AdPO: Enhancing the Adversarial Robustness of Large Vision-Language Models with Preference Optimization

Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs), such as GPT-4o and LLaVA, have recently witnessed remarkable advancements and are increasingly being deployed in real-world applications. However, inheriting the sensitivity of visual neural networks, LVLMs remain vulnerable to adversarial attacks, which can result in erroneous or malicious outputs. While existing efforts utilize adversarial fine-tuning to enhance robustness, they often suffer from performance degradation on clean inputs. In this paper, we proposes AdPO, a novel adversarial defense strategy for LVLMs based on preference optimization. For the first time, we reframe adversarial training as a preference optimization problem, aiming to enhance the model's preference for generating normal outputs on clean inputs while rejecting the potential misleading outputs for adversarial examples. Notably, AdPO achieves this by solely modifying the image encoder, e.g., CLIP ViT, resulting in superior clean and adversarial performance in a variety of downsream tasks. Considering that training involves large language models (LLMs), the computational cost increases significantly. We validate that training on smaller LVLMs and subsequently transferring to larger models can achieve competitive performance while maintaining efficiency comparable to baseline methods. Our comprehensive experiments confirm the effectiveness of the proposed AdPO, which provides a novel perspective for future adversarial defense research.

Prethermalization by Random Multipolar Driving on a 78-Qubit Superconducting Processor

Time-dependent drives hold the promise of realizing non-equilibrium many-body phenomena that are absent in undriven systems. Yet, drive-induced heating normally destabilizes the systems, which can be parametrically suppressed in the high-frequency regime by using periodic (Floquet) drives. It remains largely unknown to what extent highly controllable quantum simulators can suppress heating in non-periodically driven systems. Using the 78-qubit superconducting quantum processor, Chuang-tzu 2.0, we report the experimental observation of long-lived prethermal phases in many-body systems with tunable heating rates, driven by structured random protocols, characterized by $n$-multipolar temporal correlations. By measuring both the particle imbalance and subsystem entanglement entropy, we monitor the entire heating process over 1,000 driving cycles and observe the existence of the prethermal plateau. The prethermal lifetime is `doubly tunable': one way by driving frequency, the other by multipolar order; it grows algebraically with the frequency with the universal scaling exponent $2n{+}1$. Using quantum state tomography on different subsystems, we demonstrate a non-uniform spatial entanglement distribution and observe a crossover from area-law to volume-law entanglement scaling. With 78 qubits and 137 couplers in a 2D configuration, the entire far-from-equilibrium heating dynamics are beyond the reach of simulation using tensor-network numerical techniques. Our work highlights superconducting quantum processors as a powerful platform for exploring universal scaling laws and non-equilibrium phases of matter in driven systems in regimes where classical simulation faces formidable challenges.

Gamma-Ray Bursts Calibrated from the Observational $H(z)$ Data in Artificial Neural Network Framework

In this paper, we calibrate the luminosity relation of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) from an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) framework for reconstructing the Hubble parameter \unboldmath{$H(z)$} from the latest observational Hubble data (OHD) obtained with the cosmic chronometers method in a cosmology-independent way. We consider the physical relationships between the data to introduce the covariance matrix and KL divergence of the data into the loss function and calibrate the Amati relation ($E_{\rm p}$--$E_{\rm iso}$) by selecting the optimal ANN model with the A219 sample and the J220 sample at low redshift. Combining the Pantheon+ type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) sample and Baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs) from Dark Energy Spectroscopy Instrument (DESI) with GRBs at high redshift in the Hubble diagram by Markov Chain Monte Carlo numerical method, we find that the $Λ$CDM model is preferred over the $w$CDM and CPL models with joint constraints by the Akaike Information Criterion and Bayesian Information Criterion.
