Non-equilibrium statistical mechanics of classical nuclei interacting with the quantum electron gas

Kinetic equations governing time evolution of positions and momenta of atoms in extended systems are derived using quantum-classical ensembles within the Non-Equilibrium Statistical Operator Method (NESOM). Ions are treated classically, while their electrons quantum mechanically; however, the statistical operator is not factorised in any way and no simplifying assumptions are made concerning the electronic subsystem. Using this method, we derive kinetic equations of motion for the classical degrees of freedom (atoms) which account fully for the interaction and energy exchange with the quantum variables (electrons). Our equations, alongside the usual Newtonian-like terms normally associated with the Ehrenfest dynamics, contain additional terms, proportional to the atoms velocities, which can be associated with the electronic friction. Possible ways of calculating the friction forces which are shown to be given via complicated non-equilibrium correlation functions, are discussed. In particular, we demonstrate that the correlation functions are directly related to the thermodynamic Matsubara Green's functions, and this relationship allows for the diagrammatic methods to be used in treating electron-electron interaction perturbatively when calculating the correlation functions. This work also generalises previous attempts, mostly based on model systems, of introducing the electronic friction into Molecular Dynamics equations of atoms.

The cross-correlation between galaxies of different luminosities and Colors

We study the cross-correlation between galaxies of different luminosities and colors, using a sample selected from the SDSS Dr 4. Galaxies are divided into 6 samples according to luminosity, and each of these samples is divided into red and blue subsamples. Projected auto-correlation and cross-correlation is estimated for these subsample. At projected separations r_p > 1\mpch, all correlation functions are roughly parallel, although the correlation amplitude depends systematically on luminosity and color. On r_p < 1\mpch, the auto- and cross-correlation functions of red galaxies are significantly enhanced relative to the corresponding power laws obtained on larger scales. Such enhancement is absent for blue galaxies and in the cross-correlation between red and blue galaxies. We esimate the relative bias factor on scales r > 1\mpch for each subsample using its auto-correlation function and cross-correlation functions. The relative bias factors obtained from different methods are similar. For blue galaxies the luminosity-dependence of the relative bias is strong over the luminosity range probed (-23.0<M_r < -18.0),but for red galaxies the dependence is weaker and becomes insignificant for luminosities below L^*. To examine whether a significant stochastic/nonlinear component exists in the bias relation, we study the ratio R_ij= W_{ii}W_{jj}/W_{ij}^2, where W_{ij} is the projected correlation between subsample i and j. We find that the values of R_ij are all consistent with 1 for all-all, red-red and blue-blue samples, however significantly larger than 1 for red-blue samples. For faint red - faint blue samples the values of R_{ij} are as high as ~ 2 on small scales r_p < 1 \mpch and decrease with increasing r_p.

A High-Abundance Arc in the Compact Group of Galaxies HCG 62: An AGN- or Merger-Induced Metal Outflow?

We present a Chandra study of the metal distribution in the X-ray bright compact group of galaxies HCG 62. We find that the diffuse X-ray emission is peaked at the core of the central galaxy NGC 4778, and is dominated by the contribution of the hot gas. The diffuse emission is roughly symmetric within \simeq0.25^{\prime}, which is straddled by double-sided X-ray cavities aligned in the northeast-southwest direction. By mapping the emission hardness ratio distributions and by performing the 2-dimensional spectral analysis, we identify a remarkable high-abundance arc region at about 2^{\prime} (33.6h_{70}^{-1} kpc) from the X-ray peak that spans over a vast region from south to northwest, a part of which roughly coinciding with the outer edge of the southwest X-ray cavity. The measured average abundance in this arc is higher than that in its neighboring regions by a factor of about 2, and the abundance ratios therein are nicely consistent with the dominance of the SN Ia yields. We estimate that the mass of iron contained in the arc is >3\times 10^{6}h_{70}^{-2.5} solar mass, which accounts for >3% of the iron synthesized in the galaxy. The high-abundance arc could have been formed by the AGN activities. However, it is also possible that the arc was formed in a recent merger as is implied by the recent optical kinematic study (Spavone et al. 2006), which implies that mergers may be as important as AGN activities in metal redistributions in early-type galaxies and their associated groups or clusters.

X-Ray Properties of the Point Source Population in the Spiral Galaxy NGC 5055 (M63) with Chandra

By analyzing the Chandra ACIS S3 data we studied the X-ray properties of the low-mass and high-mass X-ray binary populations in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 5055. A total of 43 X-ray point sources were detected within the 2 effective radii, with 31 sources located on the disk and the rest 12 sources in the bulge. The resolved point sources dominate the total X-ray emission of the galaxy by accounting for about 80% of the total counts in 0.3--10 keV. By carrying out the spectral fittings we calculated the 0.3--10.0 keV luminosities of all the detected X-ray point sources and found that they span a wide range from a few 10^{37} erg s^{-1} to over 10^{39} erg s^{-1}. After compensating for the incompleteness at the low luminosity end, we find that the corrected XLF of the bulge population is well fitted with a broken power-law model with a break at 1.57^{+0.21}_{-0.20}\times 10^{38} erg s^{-1}, while the profile of the disk population's XLF agrees with a single power-law distribution with a slope of 0.93^{+0.07}_{-0.06}. The disk population is significantly richer at {}^{>}_{\sim}2\times10^{38} erg s^{-1} than the bulge population, inferring that the disk may have undergone relatively recent, strong starbursts that significantly increased the HMXB population, although ongoing starbursts are also observed in the nuclear region. Similar XLF profiles of the bulge and disk populations were found in M81. However, in most other spiral galaxies different patterns of the spatial variation of the XLF profiles from the bulge to the disk have been observed, indicating that the star formation and evolution history may be more complex than we have expected.

Probing the Mass Distributions in NGC 1407 and Its Associated Group with the X-ray Imaging Spectroscopic and Optical Photometric and Line-strength Indices Data

We present a study of the mass distributions in the bright E0 galaxy NGC 1407 and its associated group by analyzing the high quality Chandra and ROSAT X-ray spectroscopic data. In order to probe the stellar mass distribution we calculated the B-band mass-to-light ratio profile by comparing the observed line-strength indices and multi-color photometric data with different stellar synthesis model predictions. We find that the gas is single-phase with a temperature of ~0.7 keV within 1Re. Outside 1Re the gas temperature increases quickly outwards to >1 keV, indicating its group origin. We reveal that the X-ray surface brightness profile shows a central excess in the innermost region, and on both the total mass and dark matter profiles there is a flattened feature at about <1Re, which coincides with the gas temperature transition from the galactic level to the group level. The total mass and dark matter distributions within 0.85Re are cuspy and can be approximated by power-law profiles with indices of ~2, which are marginally consistent with the generalized NFW profiles with zeta=2. The mass in outer regions can be well fitted by a single NFW profile, with the derived concentration parameter c=18.6\pm1.5. We find that the NGC 1407 group has a baryon-dominated core, while the mass in the >1Re is dominated by dark matter. At the virial radius r200=572\pm118 kpc, the inferred mass and mass-to-light ratio are M200=2.20\pm0.42E13 solarM and Mvir/LB=311\pm60 solarM/solarL,respectively, showing that the NGC 1407 group is an extremely dark system even comparable to many clusters of galaxies. Since the obtained total mass is lower than those given in the earlier galaxy kinematic works, we speculate that NGC 1400 is not a virialized member in the group's gravitational potential well.

Chandra Observation of the Cluster of Galaxies MS 0839.9+2938 at z=0.194: the Central Excess Iron and SN Ia Enrichment

We present the Chandra study of the intermediately distant cluster of galaxies MS 0839.9+2938. By performing both the projected and deprojected spectral analyses, we find that the gas temperature is approximately constant at about 4 keV in 130-444h_70^-1 kpc. In the inner regions, the gas temperature descends towards the center, reaching <~ 3 keV in the central 37h_70^-1 kpc. This infers that the lower and upper limits of the mass deposit rate are 9-34 M_sun yr^-1 and 96-126 M_sun yr^-1, respectively within 74h_70^-1 kpc where the gas is significantly colder. Along with the temperature drop, we detect a significant inward iron abundance increase from about 0.4 solar in the outer regions to about 1 solar within the central 37h_70^-1 kpc. Thus MS 0839.9+2938 is the cluster showing the most significant central iron excess at z>~ 0.2. We argue that most of the excess iron should have been contributed by SNe Ia. By utilizing the observed SN Ia rate and stellar mass loss rate, we estimate that the time needed to enrich the central region with excess iron is 6.4-7.9 Gyr, which is similar to those found for the nearby clusters. Coinciding with the optical extension of the cD galaxy (up to about 30h_70^-1 kpc), the observed X-ray surface brightness profile exhibits an excess beyond the distribution expected by either the beta model or the NFW model, and can be well fitted with an empirical two-beta model that leads to a relatively flatter mass profile in the innermost region.

Chandra Study of X-Ray Point Sources in the Early-Type Galaxy NGC 4552 (M89)

We present a Chandra ACIS study of the early-type galaxy NGC 4552. We detect 47 X-ray point sources, most of which are likely LMXBs, within 4 R_e. The brightest X-ray source coincides with the optical/UV/radio center of the galaxy, and shows variability on >1 hr timescales, indicating the possible existence of a LLAGN. The 46 off-center sources and the unresolved point sources contribute about 29% and 20% to the total luminosity of the galaxy, respectively. The corrected cumulative XLF of the off-center sources is best fit by a broken power-law model with a break at L_b=4.4+2.0-1.4 e38 ergs/s. We identified 210 GCs candidates in a HST WFPC2 optical image of the galaxy's central region. Of the 25 off-center LMXBs that fall within the WFPC2 FOV, 10 sources are coincident with a GC. Thus the fraction of the GCs hosting bright LMXBs and the fraction of the LMXBs associated with GCs are 4.8% and 40%, respectively. In the V and I bands, the GCs hosting bright LMXBs are typically 1-2 magnitudes brighter than the GCs with no detected LMXBs. There are about 1.9+-0.4 times as many LMXBs in the red, metal-rich GCs as there are in the blue, metal-poor ones. We find no obvious difference between the luminosity distributions of LMXBs in GCs and in field, but the cumulative spectrum of the LMXBs in GCs tends to be softer than that of the LMXBs in field. We detected 3 X-ray sources that have isotropic luminosities larger than 1e39 erg/s. The one located in the joint Chandra-HST field is found to be associated with a GC. By studying the ACIS spectra we infer that the this may be a candidate black hole system with a mass of 15-135 M_sun. One of the other sources with a luminosity brighter than 1e39 ergs/s reveals temporal variations in brightness on timescales greater than an hour.

Arrow diagram method based on overlapping electronic groups: corrections to the linked AD theorem

Arrow diagram (AD) method (L. Kantorovich and B. Zapol, J. Chem. Phys. \textbf{96}, 8420 (1992); \emph{ibid}, 8427) provides a convenient means of systematic calculation of arbitrary matrix elements, $<Ψ|\hat{O}|Ψ>$, of symmetrical operators, $\hat{O}$, in quantum chemistry when the total system wavefunction $Ψ$ is represented as an antisymmetrised product of overlapping many-electron group functions, $Φ_{A}$, corresponding to each part (group) $A$ of the system: $Ψ=\hat{A}\prod_{A}Φ_{A}$. For extended (e.g. infinite) systems the calculation is somewhat difficult, however, as mean values of the operators require that each term of the diagram expansion is to be divided by the normalisation integral $S=<Ψ|Ψ>$, which is given by an AD expansion as well. A linked AD theorem suggested previously (L. Kantorovich, Int. J. Quant. Chem. \textbf{76}, 511 (2000)) to deal with this problem is reexamined in this paper using a simple Hartree-Fock problem of a one-dimensional ring of infinite size which is found to be analytically solvable. We find that corrections to the linked AD theorem are necessary in a general case of a finite overlap between different electronic groups. A general method of constructing these corrections in a form of a power series expansion with respect to overlap is suggested. It is illustrated on the ring model system.

Development of compact gas treatment system using secondary emission electron gun

It is well known that the non-thermal plasma processes using electrical discharge or electron beam are effective for the environmental pollutant removal. Especially, the electron beam can efficiently remove pollutant, because a lot of radicals which are useful to remove pollutant can be easily produced by high-energy electrons. We have developed a compact 100kV secondary emission electron gun to apply NOX removal. The device offers several inherent advantages such as compact in size, wide and uniform electron beam. Besides, the device offers good capability in high repetition rate pulsed operation with easy control compared with glow discharge or field emission control cathode guns. In present study, the NOX removal characteristics have been studied under the increased gun voltage, varied pulsed electron beam parameters such as current density and pulse width as well as gas flow rate. The experimental results indicate a better NOX removal efficiency comparing to other high-energy electron beam and electrical discharge processing.

The Three-point Correlation Function of Galaxies: Comparing Halo Occupation Models with Observations

We present models for the three-point correlation function (3PCF) of both dark matter and galaxies. We show that models based on the halo model can reasonably match the dark matter 3PCF obtained from high-resolution $N$-body simulations. On small scales ($r\la 0.5\mpch$) the 3PCF is sensitive to details regarding the density distributions of dark matter haloes. On larger scales ($r \ga 2.0\mpch$) the results are very sensitive to the abundance of the few most prominant haloes. Using the conditional luminosity function, we also construct models for the 3PCF of galaxies, which we test against large mock galaxy samples. The bias of the galaxy distrubution with respect to the dark matter, and the finite number of galaxies that can be hosted by individual haloes, significantly reduce the normalized three-point correlation function with respect to that of dark matter. Contrary to the 3PCF of the dark matter, the galaxy 3PCF is much less sensitive to details regarding the spatial number density distribution of galaxies in individual haloes or to the abundance of the few most massive systems. Finally, we show that our model based on the conditional luminosity function is in good agreement with results obtained from the 2-degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey. In particular, the model nicely reproduces the observational finding that the 3PCF for early-type galaxies is slightly higher than that of late-type galaxies, and that there is no significant dependence of the 3PCF on galaxy luminosity.
