A Graph Transformer-Driven Approach for Network Robustness Learning

Learning and analysis of network robustness, including controllability robustness and connectivity robustness, is critical for various networked systems against attacks. Traditionally, network robustness is determined by attack simulations, which is very time-consuming and even incapable for large-scale networks. Network Robustness Learning, which is dedicated to learning network robustness with high precision and high speed, provides a powerful tool to analyze network robustness by replacing simulations. In this paper, a novel versatile and unified robustness learning approach via graph transformer (NRL-GT) is proposed, which accomplishes the task of controllability robustness learning and connectivity robustness learning from multiple aspects including robustness curve learning, overall robustness learning, and synthetic network classification. Numerous experiments show that: 1) NRL-GT is a unified learning framework for controllability robustness and connectivity robustness, demonstrating a strong generalization ability to ensure high precision when training and test sets are distributed differently; 2) Compared to the cutting-edge methods, NRL-GT can simultaneously perform network robustness learning from multiple aspects and obtains superior results in less time. NRL-GT is also able to deal with complex networks of different size with low learning error and high efficiency; 3) It is worth mentioning that the backbone of NRL-GT can serve as a transferable feature learning module for complex networks of different size and different downstream tasks.

A Distributed Scalable Cross-chain State Channel Scheme Based on Recursive State Synchronization

As cross-chain technology continues to advance, the scale of cross-chain transactions is experiencing significant expansion. To improve scalability, researchers have turned to the study of cross-chain state channels. However, most of the existing schemes rely on trusted parties to support channel operations. To address this issue, we present Interpipe: a distributed cross-chain state channel scheme. Specifically, we propose a real-time cross-chain synchronization scheme to ensure consistent operations between two blockchains to a cross-chain state channel. Moreover, we propose a batch transaction proof scheme based on recursive SNARK to meet the cross-chain verification needs of large-scale users. Based on the above designs, Interpipe offers protocols for opening, updating, closing, and disputing operations to cross-chain state channels. Security analysis shows that Interpipe has consistency and resistance, and experimental results demonstrate that a cross-chain state channel can be nearly as efficient as an existing intra-chain state channel.

Multimodal Road Network Generation Based on Large Language Model

With the increasing popularity of ChatGPT, large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated their capabilities in communication and reasoning, promising for transportation sector intelligentization. However, they still face challenges in domain-specific knowledge. This paper aims to leverage LLMs' reasoning and recognition abilities to replace traditional user interfaces and create an "intelligent operating system" for transportation simulation software, exploring their potential with transportation modeling and simulation. We introduce Network Generation AI (NGAI), integrating LLMs with road network modeling plugins, validated through experiments for accuracy and robustness. NGAI's effective use has reduced modeling costs, revolutionized transportation simulations, optimized user steps, and proposed a novel approach for LLM integration in the transportation field.

Rendering-Enhanced Automatic Image-to-Point Cloud Registration for Roadside Scenes

Prior point cloud provides 3D environmental context, which enhances the capabilities of monocular camera in downstream vision tasks, such as 3D object detection, via data fusion. However, the absence of accurate and automated registration methods for estimating camera extrinsic parameters in roadside scene point clouds notably constrains the potential applications of roadside cameras. This paper proposes a novel approach for the automatic registration between prior point clouds and images from roadside scenes. The main idea involves rendering photorealistic grayscale views taken at specific perspectives from the prior point cloud with the help of their features like RGB or intensity values. These generated views can reduce the modality differences between images and prior point clouds, thereby improve the robustness and accuracy of the registration results. Particularly, we specify an efficient algorithm, named neighbor rendering, for the rendering process. Then we introduce a method for automatically estimating the initial guess using only rough guesses of camera's position. At last, we propose a procedure for iteratively refining the extrinsic parameters by minimizing the reprojection error for line features extracted from both generated and camera images using Segment Anything Model (SAM). We assess our method using a self-collected dataset, comprising eight cameras strategically positioned throughout the university campus. Experiments demonstrate our method's capability to automatically align prior point cloud with roadside camera image, achieving a rotation accuracy of 0.202 degrees and a translation precision of 0.079m. Furthermore, we validate our approach's effectiveness in visual applications by substantially improving monocular 3D object detection performance.

HiPose: Hierarchical Binary Surface Encoding and Correspondence Pruning for RGB-D 6DoF Object Pose Estimation

In this work, we present a novel dense-correspondence method for 6DoF object pose estimation from a single RGB-D image. While many existing data-driven methods achieve impressive performance, they tend to be time-consuming due to their reliance on rendering-based refinement approaches. To circumvent this limitation, we present HiPose, which establishes 3D-3D correspondences in a coarse-to-fine manner with a hierarchical binary surface encoding. Unlike previous dense-correspondence methods, we estimate the correspondence surface by employing point-to-surface matching and iteratively constricting the surface until it becomes a correspondence point while gradually removing outliers. Extensive experiments on public benchmarks LM-O, YCB-V, and T-Less demonstrate that our method surpasses all refinement-free methods and is even on par with expensive refinement-based approaches. Crucially, our approach is computationally efficient and enables real-time critical applications with high accuracy requirements.

Pressure-dependent adhesion between solid-supported PC-lipid bilayers and vesicles under electric fields

Fusion of lipid bilayers in membranes is important in processes from vesicle-cell interactions (as in drug delivery) to exosome-cell signaling, while transient transmembrane electric fields are known to occur spontaneously. Two contacting phosphatidylcholine (PC) lipid membranes are known to fuse into one under external electric fields, suggesting that the interaction between them is modified by the field as they approach, prior to the fusion event. Here we measure directly the adhesion energy between dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) and between distearoylphosphatidylcholine (DSPC) surface layers attached to solid substrates both without and with a transmembrane electric field. We find a marked pressure-dependent adhesion behavior in the electric field, which we attribute to fusion intermediates that are formed, shedding new light on membrane electro-fusion.

Self-Sensing Feedback Control of an Electrohydraulic Robotic Shoulder

The human shoulder, with its glenohumeral joint, tendons, ligaments, and muscles, allows for the execution of complex tasks with precision and efficiency. However, current robotic shoulder designs lack the compliance and compactness inherent in their biological counterparts. A major limitation of these designs is their reliance on external sensors like rotary encoders, which restrict mechanical joint design and introduce bulk to the system. To address this constraint, we present a bio-inspired antagonistic robotic shoulder with two degrees of freedom powered by self-sensing hydraulically amplified self-healing electrostatic actuators. Our artificial muscle design decouples the high-voltage electrostatic actuation from the pair of low-voltage self-sensing electrodes. This approach allows for proprioceptive feedback control of trajectories in the task space while eliminating the necessity for any additional sensors. We assess the platform's efficacy by comparing it to a feedback control based on position data provided by a motion capture system. The study demonstrates closed-loop controllable robotic manipulators based on an inherent self-sensing capability of electrohydraulic actuators. The proposed architecture can serve as a basis for complex musculoskeletal joint arrangements.

Graph for Science: From API based Programming to Graph Engine based Programming for HPC

Modern scientific applications predominantly run on large-scale computing platforms, necessitating collaboration between scientific domain experts and high-performance computing (HPC) experts. While domain experts are often skilled in customizing domain-specific scientific computing routines, which often involves various matrix computations, HPC experts are essential for achieving efficient execution of these computations on large-scale platforms. This process often involves utilizing complex parallel computing libraries tailored to specific matrix computation scenarios. However, the intricate programming procedure and the need for deep understanding in both application domains and HPC poses significant challenges to the widespread adoption of scientific computing. In this research, we observe that matrix computations can be transformed into equivalent graph representations, and that by utilizing graph processing engines, HPC experts can be freed from the burden of implementing efficient scientific computations. Based on this observation, we introduce a graph engine-based scientific computing (Graph for Science) paradigm, which provides a unified graph programming interface, enabling domain experts to promptly implement various types of matrix computations. The proposed paradigm leverages the underlying graph processing engine to achieve efficient execution, eliminating the needs for HPC expertise in programming large-scale scientific applications. Our results show that the graph engine-based scientific computing paradigm achieves performance comparable to the best-performing implementations based on existing parallel computing libraries and bespoke implementations. Importantly, the paradigm greatly simplifies the development of scientific computations on large-scale platforms, reducing the programming difficulty for scientists and facilitating broader adoption of scientific computing.

Integrated quantum communication network and vibration sensing in optical fibers

Communication and sensing technology play a significant role in various aspects of modern society. A seamless combination of the communication and the sensing systems is desired and have attracted great interests in recent years. Here, we propose and demonstrate a network architecture that integrating the downstream quantum access network (DQAN) and vibration sensing in optical fibers. By encoding the key information of eight users simultaneously on the sidemode quantum states of a single laser source and successively separating them by a filter network, we achieve a secure and efficient DQAN with an average key rate of 1.88*10^4 bits per second over an 80 km single-mode fiber. Meanwhile, the vibration location with spatial resolution of 120 m, 24 m, and 8 m at vibration frequencies of 100 Hz, 1 kHz, and 10 kHz, respectively, is implemented with the existing infrastructure of the DQAN system. Our integrated architecture provides a viable and cost-effective solution for building a secure quantum communication sensor network, and open the way for expanding the functionality of quantum communication networks.

Addressing Heterogeneity in Federated Load Forecasting with Personalization Layers

The advent of smart meters has enabled pervasive collection of energy consumption data for training short-term load forecasting models. In response to privacy concerns, federated learning (FL) has been proposed as a privacy-preserving approach for training, but the quality of trained models degrades as client data becomes heterogeneous. In this paper we propose the use of personalization layers for load forecasting in a general framework called PL-FL. We show that PL-FL outperforms FL and purely local training, while requiring lower communication bandwidth than FL. This is done through extensive simulations on three different datasets from the NREL ComStock repository.

High-Fidelity Lake Extraction via Two-Stage Prompt Enhancement: Establishing a Novel Baseline and Benchmark

Lake extraction from remote sensing imagery is a complex challenge due to the varied lake shapes and data noise. Current methods rely on multispectral image datasets, making it challenging to learn lake features accurately from pixel arrangements. This, in turn, affects model learning and the creation of accurate segmentation masks. This paper introduces a prompt-based dataset construction approach that provides approximate lake locations using point, box, and mask prompts. We also propose a two-stage prompt enhancement framework, LEPrompter, with prompt-based and prompt-free stages during training. The prompt-based stage employs a prompt encoder to extract prior information, integrating prompt tokens and image embedding through self- and cross-attention in the prompt decoder. Prompts are deactivated to ensure independence during inference, enabling automated lake extraction without introducing additional parameters and GFlops. Extensive experiments showcase performance improvements of our proposed approach compared to the previous state-of-the-art method. The source code is available at https://github.com/BastianChen/LEPrompter.

Network-Assisted Full-Duplex Cell-Free mmWave Networks: Hybrid MIMO Processing and Multi-Agent DRL-Based Power Allocation

This paper investigates the network-assisted full-duplex (NAFD) cell-free millimeter-wave (mmWave) networks, where the distribution of the transmitting access points (T-APs) and receiving access points (R-APs) across distinct geographical locations mitigates cross-link interference, facilitating the attainment of a truly flexible duplex mode. To curtail deployment expenses and power consumption for mmWave band operations, each AP incorporates a hybrid digital-analog structure encompassing precoder/combiner functions. However, this incorporation introduces processing intricacies within channel estimation and precoding/combining design. In this paper, we first present a hybrid multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) processing framework and derive explicit expressions for both uplink and downlink achievable rates. Then we formulate a power allocation problem to maximize the weighted bidirectional sum rates. To tackle this non-convex problem, we develop a collaborative multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL) algorithm called multi-agent twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (MATD3) for NAFD cell-free mmWave networks. Specifically, given the tightly coupled nature of both uplink and downlink power coefficients in NAFD cell-free mmWave networks, the MATD3 algorithm resolves such coupled conflicts through an interactive learning process between agents and the environment. Finally, the simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed channel estimation methods within our hybrid MIMO processing paradigm, and demonstrate that our MATD3 algorithm outperforms both multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient (MADDPG) and conventional power allocation strategies.

Safe Explicable Planning

Human expectations arise from their understanding of others and the world. In the context of human-AI interaction, this understanding may not align with reality, leading to the AI agent failing to meet expectations and compromising team performance. Explicable planning, introduced as a method to bridge this gap, aims to reconcile human expectations with the agent's optimal behavior, facilitating interpretable decision-making. However, an unresolved critical issue is ensuring safety in explicable planning, as it could result in explicable behaviors that are unsafe. To address this, we propose Safe Explicable Planning (SEP), which extends the prior work to support the specification of a safety bound. The goal of SEP is to find behaviors that align with human expectations while adhering to the specified safety criterion. Our approach generalizes the consideration of multiple objectives stemming from multiple models rather than a single model, yielding a Pareto set of safe explicable policies. We present both an exact method, guaranteeing finding the Pareto set, and a more efficient greedy method that finds one of the policies in the Pareto set. Additionally, we offer approximate solutions based on state aggregation to improve scalability. We provide formal proofs that validate the desired theoretical properties of these methods. Evaluation through simulations and physical robot experiments confirms the effectiveness of our approach for safe explicable planning.

An ultraviolet photodetector based on conductive hydrogenated TiO$_2$ film prepared by radio frequency atmospheric pressure plasma

The growing demand for real-time ultraviolet (UV) monitoring calls for a simple, rapid, and low-cost strategy to prepare UV photodetectors. We prepare a wearable real-time UV photodetector based on hydrogenated titanium dioxide film synthesized by radio frequency atmospheric pressure plasma. The conductivity of our hydrogenated titanium dioxide is improved to 10.2 S cm$^{-1}$, 9 orders of magnitude higher than that of pristine titanium dioxide after 10 min plasma treatment. Plasma hydrogenation disrupts the surface crystal structure, introducing oxygen vacancies (OVs) that create self-doped titanium(III) and titanium (II) species. First-principles calculations indicate the OVs raise the Fermi level of TiO$_2$ and distort the lattice nearby. Our optimized film has a distinctive periodic switching characteristic under intermittent illumination and good responsivity from 280 - 400 nm, peaking at 632.35 mA W^{-1}$ at 365 nm. The fabricated wearable sensor based on the optimized film effectively performs the monitoring of the daily variation of ambient UV intensity in three typical weather types and transferring its data to a smartphone via Wi-Fi.

Genos: General In-Network Unsupervised Intrusion Detection by Rule Extraction

Anomaly-based network intrusion detection systems (A-NIDS) use unsupervised models to detect unforeseen attacks. However, existing A-NIDS solutions suffer from low throughput, lack of interpretability, and high maintenance costs. Recent in-network intelligence (INI) exploits programmable switches to offer line-rate deployment of NIDS. Nevertheless, current in-network NIDS are either model-specific or only apply to supervised models. In this paper, we propose Genos, a general in-network framework for unsupervised A-NIDS by rule extraction, which consists of a Model Compiler, a Model Interpreter, and a Model Debugger. Specifically, observing benign data are multimodal and usually located in multiple subspaces in the feature space, we utilize a divide-and-conquer approach for model-agnostic rule extraction. In the Model Compiler, we first propose a tree-based clustering algorithm to partition the feature space into subspaces, then design a decision boundary estimation mechanism to approximate the source model in each subspace. The Model Interpreter interprets predictions by important attributes to aid network operators in understanding the predictions. The Model Debugger conducts incremental updating to rectify errors by only fine-tuning rules on affected subspaces, thus reducing maintenance costs. We implement a prototype using physical hardware, and experiments demonstrate its superior performance of 100 Gbps throughput, great interpretability, and trivial updating overhead.

Site-Specific Beam Alignment in 6G via Deep Learning

Beam alignment (BA) in modern millimeter wave standards such as 5G NR and WiGig (802.11ay) is based on exhaustive and/or hierarchical beam searches over pre-defined codebooks of wide and narrow beams. This approach is slow and bandwidth/power-intensive, and is a considerable hindrance to the wide deployment of millimeter wave bands. A new approach is needed as we move towards 6G. BA is a promising use case for deep learning (DL) in the 6G air interface, offering the possibility of automated custom tuning of the BA procedure for each cell based on its unique propagation environment and user equipment (UE) location patterns. We overview and advocate for such an approach in this paper, which we term site-specific beam alignment (SSBA). SSBA largely eliminates wasteful searches and allows UEs to be found much more quickly and reliably, without many of the drawbacks of other machine learning-aided approaches. We first overview and demonstrate new results on SSBA, then identify the key open challenges facing SSBA.
