Interplay between moment-dependent and field-driven unidirectional magnetoresistance in CoFeB/InSb/CdTe heterostructures

Magnetoresistance effects are crucial for understanding the charge/spin transport as well as propelling the advancement of spintronic applications. Here we report the coexistence of magnetic moment-dependent (MD) and magnetic field-driven (FD) unidirectional magnetoresistance (UMR) effects in CoFeB/InSb/CdTe heterostructures. The strong spin-orbital coupling of InSb and the matched impedance at the CoFeB/InSb interface warrant a distinct MD-UMR effect at room temperature, while the interaction between the in-plane magnetic field and the Rashba effect at the InSb/CdTe interface induces the marked FD-UMR signal that dominates the high-field region. Moreover, owning to the different spin transport mechanisms, these two types of nonreciprocal charge transport show opposite polarities with respect to the magnetic field direction, which further enable an effective phase modulation of the angular-dependent magnetoresistance. Besides, the demonstrations of both the tunable UMR response and two-terminal spin-orbit torque-driven magnetization switching validate our CoFeB/InSb/CdTe system as a suitable integrated building block for multifunctional spintronic device design.

Engage Wider Audience or Facilitate Quality Answers? a Mixed-methods Analysis of Questioning Strategies for Research Sensemaking on a Community Q&A Site

Discussing research-sensemaking questions on Community Question and Answering (CQA) platforms has been an increasingly common practice for the public to participate in science communication. Nonetheless, how users strategically craft research-sensemaking questions to engage public participation and facilitate knowledge construction is a significant yet less understood problem. To fill this gap, we collected 837 science-related questions and 157,684 answers from Zhihu, and conducted a mixed-methods study to explore user-developed strategies in proposing research-sensemaking questions, and their potential effects on public engagement and knowledge construction. Through open coding, we captured a comprehensive taxonomy of question-crafting strategies, such as eyecatching narratives with counter-intuitive claims and rigorous descriptions with data use. Regression analysis indicated that these strategies correlated with user engagement and answer construction in different ways (e.g., emotional questions attracted more views and answers), yet there existed a general divergence between wide participation and quality knowledge establishment, when most questioning strategies could not ensure both. Based on log analysis, we further found that collaborative editing afforded unique values in refining research-sensemaking questions regarding accuracy, rigor, comprehensiveness and attractiveness. We propose design implications to facilitate accessible, accurate and engaging science communication on CQA platforms.

First-principles molecular quantum electrodynamics theory at all coupling strengths

The ever-growing intersection of quantum electrodynamics (QED) and molecular processes has shown remarkable and unanticipated advancements in altering molecular properties and reactivity by exploiting light-matter couplings. In recent years, multiple ab initio methods have been developed to compute the eigenstates of molecular systems strongly coupled to cavities, ranging from the mean-field to quantum many-body methods. The quantum many-body methods, such as coupled-cluster theories, usually rely on the quality of mean-field reference wavefunctions. Hence, developing efficient and physically reliable mean-filed approaches for molecular quantum electrodynamics problems is crucial. The current widely used methods, such as QED Hartree-Fock and the self-consistent counterpart, are limited to specific coupling regimes. In this work, we developed a variational transformation-based molecular quantum electrodynamics mean-field method, namely VT-QEDHF, for light-matter interaction at arbitrary coupling strength. The numerical benchmark demonstrates that the VT-QEDHF method naturally connects both QEDHF and self-consistent QEDHF methods at the two limits, showcasing the advantage of VT-QEHDF across all coupling strengths.

The Iteration Formula of (n,2,d) Full-correlated Multi-component Bell Function and Its Applications

It is very difficult and important to construct Bell inequalities for n-partite, k-settings of measurement, and d-dimensional (n,k,d) systems. Inspired by the iteration formula form of the Mermin-Ardehali-Belinski{\uı}-Klyshko (MABK) inequality, we generalize the multi-component correlation functions for bipartite d-dimensional systems to n-partite ones, and construct the corresponding Bell inequality. The Collins-Gisin-Linden-Massar-Popescu inequality can be reproduced by this way. The most important result is that for prime d the general Bell function in full-correlated multi-component correlation function form for (n,2,d) systems can be reformulated in iteration formula by two full-correlated multi-component Bell functions for (n-1,2,d) systems. As applications, we recover the MABK inequality and the most robust coincidence Bell inequalities for (3,2,3),(4,2,3),(5,2,3), and (3,2,5) Bell scenarios with this iteration formula. This implies that the iteration formula is an efficient way of constructing multi-partite Bell inequalities. In addition, we also give some new Bell inequalities with the same robustness but inequivalent to the known ones.

Spatio-Temporal Similarity Measure based Multi-Task Learning for Predicting Alzheimer's Disease Progression using MRI Data

Identifying and utilising various biomarkers for tracking Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression have received many recent attentions and enable helping clinicians make the prompt decisions. Traditional progression models focus on extracting morphological biomarkers in regions of interest (ROIs) from MRI/PET images, such as regional average cortical thickness and regional volume. They are effective but ignore the relationships between brain ROIs over time, which would lead to synergistic deterioration. For exploring the synergistic deteriorating relationship between these biomarkers, in this paper, we propose a novel spatio-temporal similarity measure based multi-task learning approach for effectively predicting AD progression and sensitively capturing the critical relationships between biomarkers. Specifically, we firstly define a temporal measure for estimating the magnitude and velocity of biomarker change over time, which indicate a changing trend(temporal). Converting this trend into the vector, we then compare this variability between biomarkers in a unified vector space(spatial). The experimental results show that compared with directly ROI based learning, our proposed method is more effective in predicting disease progression. Our method also enables performing longitudinal stability selection to identify the changing relationships between biomarkers, which play a key role in disease progression. We prove that the synergistic deteriorating biomarkers between cortical volumes or surface areas have a significant effect on the cognitive prediction.

E3 TTS: Easy End-to-End Diffusion-based Text to Speech

We propose Easy End-to-End Diffusion-based Text to Speech, a simple and efficient end-to-end text-to-speech model based on diffusion. E3 TTS directly takes plain text as input and generates an audio waveform through an iterative refinement process. Unlike many prior work, E3 TTS does not rely on any intermediate representations like spectrogram features or alignment information. Instead, E3 TTS models the temporal structure of the waveform through the diffusion process. Without relying on additional conditioning information, E3 TTS could support flexible latent structure within the given audio. This enables E3 TTS to be easily adapted for zero-shot tasks such as editing without any additional training. Experiments show that E3 TTS can generate high-fidelity audio, approaching the performance of a state-of-the-art neural TTS system. Audio samples are available at https://e3tts.github.io.

Handling Heavy Occlusion in Dense Crowd Tracking by Focusing on the Heads

With the rapid development of deep learning, object detection and tracking play a vital role in today's society. Being able to identify and track all the pedestrians in the dense crowd scene with computer vision approaches is a typical challenge in this field, also known as the Multiple Object Tracking (MOT) challenge. Modern trackers are required to operate on more and more complicated scenes. According to the MOT20 challenge result, the pedestrian is 4 times denser than the MOT17 challenge. Hence, improving the ability to detect and track in extremely crowded scenes is the aim of this work. In light of the occlusion issue with the human body, the heads are usually easier to identify. In this work, we have designed a joint head and body detector in an anchor-free style to boost the detection recall and precision performance of pedestrians in both small and medium sizes. Innovatively, our model does not require information on the statistical head-body ratio for common pedestrians detection for training. Instead, the proposed model learns the ratio dynamically. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed model, we evaluate the model with extensive experiments on different datasets, including MOT20, Crowdhuman, and HT21 datasets. As a result, our proposed method significantly improves both the recall and precision rate on small & medium sized pedestrians and achieves state-of-the-art results in these challenging datasets.

Unveiling nontrivial fusion rule of Majorana zero mode using a fermionic mode

Fusing Majorana zero modes leads to multiple outcomes, a property being unique to non-Abelian anyons. Successful demonstration of this nontrivial fusion rule would be a hallmark for the development of topological quantum computation. Here we show that this can be done by simply attaching a fermionic mode to a single Majorana zero mode. Through modulation of the energy level of this fermionic mode as well as its coupling with the Majorana mode in different sequences, we show that a zero or integer charge pumping can be realized when different fusion loops are chosen. Such fusion loops are intimately related with the nontrivial fusion rule of Majorana modes and are solely determined by the crossings at zero energy in the parameter space. Finally we demonstrate our proposal in a nanowire-based topological superconductor coupled to a quantum dot. We show that the charge pumping is robust for MZMs in the real system irrespective of the initial condition of FM state, contrary to the case for trivial Andreev bound states. This provides a feasible way to distinguish Majorana modes from trivial Andreev bound states.

PIEClass: Weakly-Supervised Text Classification with Prompting and Noise-Robust Iterative Ensemble Training

Weakly-supervised text classification trains a classifier using the label name of each target class as the only supervision, which largely reduces human annotation efforts. Most existing methods first use the label names as static keyword-based features to generate pseudo labels, which are then used for final classifier training. While reasonable, such a commonly adopted framework suffers from two limitations: (1) keywords can have different meanings in different contexts and some text may not have any keyword, so keyword matching can induce noisy and inadequate pseudo labels; (2) the errors made in the pseudo label generation stage will directly propagate to the classifier training stage without a chance of being corrected. In this paper, we propose a new method, PIEClass, consisting of two modules: (1) a pseudo label acquisition module that uses zero-shot prompting of pre-trained language models (PLM) to get pseudo labels based on contextualized text understanding beyond static keyword matching, and (2) a noise-robust iterative ensemble training module that iteratively trains classifiers and updates pseudo labels by utilizing two PLM fine-tuning methods that regularize each other. Extensive experiments show that PIEClass achieves overall better performance than existing strong baselines on seven benchmark datasets and even achieves similar performance to fully-supervised classifiers on sentiment classification tasks.

Pre-training Multi-task Contrastive Learning Models for Scientific Literature Understanding

Scientific literature understanding tasks have gained significant attention due to their potential to accelerate scientific discovery. Pre-trained language models (LMs) have shown effectiveness in these tasks, especially when tuned via contrastive learning. However, jointly utilizing pre-training data across multiple heterogeneous tasks (e.g., extreme multi-label paper classification, citation prediction, and literature search) remains largely unexplored. To bridge this gap, we propose a multi-task contrastive learning framework, SciMult, with a focus on facilitating common knowledge sharing across different scientific literature understanding tasks while preventing task-specific skills from interfering with each other. To be specific, we explore two techniques -- task-aware specialization and instruction tuning. The former adopts a Mixture-of-Experts Transformer architecture with task-aware sub-layers; the latter prepends task-specific instructions to the input text so as to produce task-aware outputs. Extensive experiments on a comprehensive collection of benchmark datasets verify the effectiveness of our task-aware specialization strategy, where we outperform state-of-the-art scientific pre-trained LMs. Code, datasets, and pre-trained models can be found at https://scimult.github.io/.

How Biomimetic Morphing Dorsal Fin Affects the Swimming Performance of a Free-swimming Tuna Robot

It is well known that tuna fish in the ocean can dynamically morph their median fins to achieve optimal hydrodynamic performance, e.g. linear acceleration and maneuverability. In this study, based on the previous studies about the median fin's hydrodynamic effects focusing on tethered conditions, we continue to explore the hydrodynamic function of tuna morphing dorsal fin in free swimming conditions for better approaching real-life situations. Here, we developed a tuna-inspired robotic fish platform that can swim independently in three dimensions, equipped with a biomimetic morphing dorsal fin magnetically attached to the robotic fish. Based on the free-swimming robotic fish platform, we investigated how the erected dorsal fin affects the speed, cost of transport (COT), and robotic fish's yaw angle at different frequencies and amplitudes. The erected dorsal fin plays a positive role in improving the yaw stability of robotic fish. However, it shows little influence on the speed and COT in our test. This remains to be further investigated in the future.

Machine Learning Methods for Background Potential Estimation in 2DEGs

In the realm of quantum-effect devices and materials, two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) stand as fundamental structures that promise transformative technologies. However, the presence of impurities and defects in 2DEGs poses substantial challenges, impacting carrier mobility, conductivity, and quantum coherence time. To address this, we harness the power of scanning gate microscopy (SGM) and employ three distinct machine learning techniques to estimate the background potential of 2DEGs from SGM data: image-to-image translation using generative adversarial neural networks, cellular neural network, and evolutionary search. Our findings, despite data constraints, highlight the effectiveness of an evolutionary search algorithm in this context, offering a novel approach for defect analysis. This work not only advances our understanding of 2DEGs but also underscores the potential of machine learning in probing quantum materials, with implications for quantum computing and nanoelectronics.

Ontology Enrichment for Effective Fine-grained Entity Typing

Fine-grained entity typing (FET) is the task of identifying specific entity types at a fine-grained level for entity mentions based on their contextual information. Conventional methods for FET require extensive human annotation, which is time-consuming and costly. Recent studies have been developing weakly supervised or zero-shot approaches. We study the setting of zero-shot FET where only an ontology is provided. However, most existing ontology structures lack rich supporting information and even contain ambiguous relations, making them ineffective in guiding FET. Recently developed language models, though promising in various few-shot and zero-shot NLP tasks, may face challenges in zero-shot FET due to their lack of interaction with task-specific ontology. In this study, we propose OnEFET, where we (1) enrich each node in the ontology structure with two types of extra information: instance information for training sample augmentation and topic information to relate types to contexts, and (2) develop a coarse-to-fine typing algorithm that exploits the enriched information by training an entailment model with contrasting topics and instance-based augmented training samples. Our experiments show that OnEFET achieves high-quality fine-grained entity typing without human annotation, outperforming existing zero-shot methods by a large margin and rivaling supervised methods.

Non-autoregressive Text Editing with Copy-aware Latent Alignments

Recent work has witnessed a paradigm shift from Seq2Seq to Seq2Edit in the field of text editing, with the aim of addressing the slow autoregressive inference problem posed by the former. Despite promising results, Seq2Edit approaches still face several challenges such as inflexibility in generation and difficulty in generalizing to other languages. In this work, we propose a novel non-autoregressive text editing method to circumvent the above issues, by modeling the edit process with latent CTC alignments. We make a crucial extension to CTC by introducing the copy operation into the edit space, thus enabling more efficient management of textual overlap in editing. We conduct extensive experiments on GEC and sentence fusion tasks, showing that our proposed method significantly outperforms existing Seq2Edit models and achieves similar or even better results than Seq2Seq with over $4\times$ speedup. Moreover, it demonstrates good generalizability on German and Russian. In-depth analyses reveal the strengths of our method in terms of the robustness under various scenarios and generating fluent and flexible outputs.

COPR: Consistency-Oriented Pre-Ranking for Online Advertising

Cascading architecture has been widely adopted in large-scale advertising systems to balance efficiency and effectiveness. In this architecture, the pre-ranking model is expected to be a lightweight approximation of the ranking model, which handles more candidates with strict latency requirements. Due to the gap in model capacity, the pre-ranking and ranking models usually generate inconsistent ranked results, thus hurting the overall system effectiveness. The paradigm of score alignment is proposed to regularize their raw scores to be consistent. However, it suffers from inevitable alignment errors and error amplification by bids when applied in online advertising. To this end, we introduce a consistency-oriented pre-ranking framework for online advertising, which employs a chunk-based sampling module and a plug-and-play rank alignment module to explicitly optimize consistency of ECPM-ranked results. A $ΔNDCG$-based weighting mechanism is adopted to better distinguish the importance of inter-chunk samples in optimization. Both online and offline experiments have validated the superiority of our framework. When deployed in Taobao display advertising system, it achieves an improvement of up to +12.3\% CTR and +5.6\% RPM.

CCOM-HuQin: an Annotated Multimodal Chinese Fiddle Performance Dataset

HuQin is a family of traditional Chinese bowed string instruments. Playing techniques(PTs) embodied in various playing styles add abundant emotional coloring and aesthetic feelings to HuQin performance. The complex applied techniques make HuQin music a challenging source for fundamental MIR tasks such as pitch analysis, transcription and score-audio alignment. In this paper, we present a multimodal performance dataset of HuQin music that contains audio-visual recordings of 11,992 single PT clips and 57 annotated musical pieces of classical excerpts. We systematically describe the HuQin PT taxonomy based on musicological theory and practical use cases. Then we introduce the dataset creation methodology and highlight the annotation principles featuring PTs. We analyze the statistics in different aspects to demonstrate the variety of PTs played in HuQin subcategories and perform preliminary experiments to show the potential applications of the dataset in various MIR tasks and cross-cultural music studies. Finally, we propose future work to be extended on the dataset.

SLM: Bridge the thin gap between speech and text foundation models

We present a joint Speech and Language Model (SLM), a multitask, multilingual, and dual-modal model that takes advantage of pretrained foundational speech and language models. SLM freezes the pretrained foundation models to maximally preserves their capabilities, and only trains a simple adapter with just 1\% (156M) of the foundation models' parameters. This adaptation not only leads SLM to achieve strong performance on conventional tasks such as speech recognition (ASR) and speech translation (AST), but also introduces the novel capability of zero-shot instruction-following for more diverse tasks: given a speech input and a text instruction, SLM is able to perform unseen generation tasks including contextual biasing ASR using real-time context, dialog generation, speech continuation, and question answering, etc. Our approach demonstrates that the representational gap between pretrained speech and language models might be narrower than one would expect, and can be bridged by a simple adaptation mechanism. As a result, SLM is not only efficient to train, but also inherits strong capabilities already acquired in foundation models of different modalities.

Google USM: Scaling Automatic Speech Recognition Beyond 100 Languages

We introduce the Universal Speech Model (USM), a single large model that performs automatic speech recognition (ASR) across 100+ languages. This is achieved by pre-training the encoder of the model on a large unlabeled multilingual dataset of 12 million (M) hours spanning over 300 languages, and fine-tuning on a smaller labeled dataset. We use multilingual pre-training with random-projection quantization and speech-text modality matching to achieve state-of-the-art performance on downstream multilingual ASR and speech-to-text translation tasks. We also demonstrate that despite using a labeled training set 1/7-th the size of that used for the Whisper model, our model exhibits comparable or better performance on both in-domain and out-of-domain speech recognition tasks across many languages.
