Simulation-Based Optimization of User Interfaces for Quality-Assuring Machine Learning Model Predictions

Quality-sensitive applications of machine learning (ML) require quality assurance (QA) by humans before the predictions of an ML model can be deployed. QA for ML (QA4ML) interfaces require users to view a large amount of data and perform many interactions to correct errors made by the ML model. An optimized user interface (UI) can significantly reduce interaction costs. While UI optimization can be informed by user studies evaluating design options, this approach is not scalable because there are typically numerous small variations that can affect the efficiency of a QA4ML interface. Hence, we propose using simulation to evaluate and aid the optimization of QA4ML interfaces. In particular, we focus on simulating the combined effects of human intelligence in initiating appropriate interaction commands and machine intelligence in providing algorithmic assistance for accelerating QA4ML processes. As QA4ML is usually labor-intensive, we use the simulated task completion time as the metric for UI optimization under different interface and algorithm setups. We demonstrate the usage of this UI design method in several QA4ML applications.

The dusty red supergiant progenitor and the local environment of the Type II SN 2023ixf in M101

As one of the closest supernovae (SNe) in the last decade, SN 2023ixf is an unprecedented target to investigate the progenitor star that exploded. However, there is still significant uncertainty in the reported progenitor properties. In this work, we present a detailed study of the progenitor of SN 2023ixf with two independent analyses. We first modelled its spectral energy distribution (SED) based on Hubble Space Telescope optical, Spitzer mid-infrared (IR), and ground-based near-IR data. We find that stellar pulsation and circumstellar extinction have great impacts on SED fitting, and the result suggests a relatively massive red supergiant (RSG) surrounded by C-rich dust with an initial mass of 16.2--17.4 Msun. The corresponding rate of mass-loss occurring at least 3 years before the SN explosion is about $2 \times 10^{-4} M_\odot$yr$^{-1}$. We also derived the star formation history of the SN environment based on resolved stellar populations, and the most recent star-forming epoch corresponds to a progenitor initial mass of 17--19 Msun, in agreement with that from our SED fitting. Therefore, we conclude that the progenitor of SN 2023ixf is close to the high-mass end for Type II SN progenitors.

Variability of magnetic hot stars from the TESS observations

Magnetic hot stars refer to the stars, which effective temperatures approximately in the range from 7,000 to 50,000 K, and with large-scale globally organized magnetic fields. These magnetic fields exhibit strengths ranging from tens of Gauss to tens of kilo-Gauss. They are key in understanding the effects caused by magnetic fields in the stellar evolution. However, there are only three magnetic hot stars studied via a combination of spectropolarimetric and asteroseismic modeling. Combined with $Transiting\;Exoplanet\;Survey\;Satellite\;(TESS)$ 1-56 sectors data sets, we provided a photometric variability and stochastic low frequency (SLF) variability study of 118 magnetic hot stars. 9 new rotating variable stars are identified. Using the Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) framework, we fitted the morphologies of SLF variability for magnetic hot stars. Our analysis reveals that the magnetic hot stars in our sample have $γ< 5.5$ with the vast majority having $1 \leq γ\leq 3$. The $ν_{\rm char}$ is primarily in the ranges of $0\;\text{d}^{-1} < ν_{\rm char} < 6.3\;\text{d}^{-1}$. The amplitude of SLF variability, log$α_{\rm 0}$, shows a dominant distribution ranging from 0.8 to 3. No significant correlations are observed between the luminosity and fitting parameters, suggesting no clear dependence of SLF variability on stellar mass for our sample of magnetic hot stars with masses between approximately $1.5 M_{\odot}< M < 20 M_{\odot}$. We found a significant negative correlation between the $B_{\rm p}$ and $ν_{char}$. This suppression effect of magnetic fields on $ν_{\rm char}$ may be a result of their inhibition of macroturbulence.

Occlusion-Aware Detection and Re-ID Calibrated Network for Multi-Object Tracking

Multi-Object Tracking (MOT) is a crucial computer vision task that aims to predict the bounding boxes and identities of objects simultaneously. While state-of-the-art methods have made remarkable progress by jointly optimizing the multi-task problems of detection and Re-ID feature learning, yet, few approaches explore to tackle the occlusion issue, which is a long-standing challenge in the MOT field. Generally, occluded objects may hinder the detector from estimating the bounding boxes, resulting in fragmented trajectories. And the learned occluded Re-ID embeddings are less distinct since they contain interferer. To this end, we propose an occlusion-aware detection and Re-ID calibrated network for multi-object tracking, termed as ORCTrack. Specifically, we propose an Occlusion-Aware Attention (OAA) module in the detector that highlights the object features while suppressing the occluded background regions. OAA can serve as a modulator that enhances the detector for some potentially occluded objects. Furthermore, we design a Re-ID embedding matching block based on the optimal transport problem, which focuses on enhancing and calibrating the Re-ID representations through different adjacent frames complementarily. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, extensive experiments are conducted on two challenging VisDrone2021-MOT and KITTI benchmarks. Experimental evaluations demonstrate the superiority of our approach, which can achieve new state-of-the-art performance and enjoy high run-time efficiency.

OldVisOnline: Curating a Dataset of Historical Visualizations

With the increasing adoption of digitization, more and more historical visualizations created hundreds of years ago are accessible in digital libraries online. It provides a unique opportunity for visualization and history research. Meanwhile, there is no large-scale digital collection dedicated to historical visualizations. The visualizations are scattered in various collections, which hinders retrieval. In this study, we curate the first large-scale dataset dedicated to historical visualizations. Our dataset comprises 13K historical visualization images with corresponding processed metadata from seven digital libraries. In curating the dataset, we propose a workflow to scrape and process heterogeneous metadata. We develop a semi-automatic labeling approach to distinguish visualizations from other artifacts. Our dataset can be accessed with OldVisOnline, a system we have built to browse and label historical visualizations. We discuss our vision of usage scenarios and research opportunities with our dataset, such as textual criticism for historical visualizations. Drawing upon our experience, we summarize recommendations for future efforts to improve our dataset.

Theory and modeling of light-matter interactions in chemistry: current and future

Light-matter interaction not only plays an instrumental role in characterizing materials' properties via various spectroscopic techniques but also provides a general strategy to manipulate material properties via the design of novel nanostructures. This perspective summarizes recent theoretical advances in modeling light-matter interactions in chemistry, mainly focusing on plasmon and polariton chemistry. The former utilizes the highly localized photon, plasmonic hot electrons, and local heat to drive chemical reactions. In contrast, polariton chemistry modifies the potential energy curvatures of bare electronic systems, and hence their chemistry, via forming light-matter hybrid states, so-called polaritons. The perspective starts with the basic background of light-matter interactions, molecular quantum electrodynamics theory, and the challenges of modeling light-matter interactions in chemistry. Then, the recent advances in modeling plasmon and polariton chemistry are described, and future directions toward multiscale simulations of light-matter interaction-mediated chemistry are discussed.

Cluster aggregates surrounding Pismis 5 in the Vela Molecular Ridge

Context. In the Gaia era, the precision of astrometric data is unprecedented. High-quality data make it easier to find more cluster aggregates and support further confirmation of these open clusters. Aims. We use Gaia DR3 to redetermine the open clusters surrounding Pismis 5 in the Vela Molecular Ridge. We also investigate the basic properties of these clusters. Methods. We apply two clustering algorithms (StarGO and pyUPMASK) to identify the open cluster members in a five-dimensional space with Gaia DR3. Results. We identify eight open clusters surrounding Pismis 5 in the Vela Molecular Ridge. The open cluster QZ 1 is newly discovered. Through investigating the comprehensive properties of the clusters, one open binary cluster candidate (Alessi 43 and Collinder 197) and one triple open cluster candidate (Pismis 5, Pismis 5A, and Pismis 5B) are discussed. Conclusions. Binary and triple open cluster candidates have been identified as potential primordial aggregates based on their similar age, position, and motion. According to kinematic speculations, the two aggregate candidates will gradually separate, and their interiors will slowly disintegrate.

Laboratory observation of ion acceleration via reflection off laser-produced magnetized collisionless shocks

Fermi acceleration by collisionless shocks is believed to be the primary mechanism to produce high energy charged particles in the Universe, where charged particles gain energy successively from multiple reflections off the shock front. Here,we present the first direct experimental evidence of ion energization from reflection off a supercritical quasi perpendicular collisionless shock,an essential component of Fermi acceleration in a laser produced magnetized plasma. We observed a quasi monoenergetic ion beam with 2,4 times the shock velocity in the upstream flow using time of flight method. Our related kinetic simulations reproduced the energy gain and showed that these ions were first reflected and then accelerated mainly by the motional electric field associated with the shock. This mechanism can also explain the quasi monoenergetic fast ion component observed in the Earth's bow shock.

Exploring Parity Magnetic Effects through Experimental Simulation with Superconducting Qubits

We present the successful realization of four-dimensional (4D) semimetal bands featuring tensor monopoles, achieved using superconducting quantum circuits. Our experiment involves the creation of a highly tunable diamond energy diagram with four coupled transmons, and the parametric modulation of their tunable couplers, effectively mapping momentum space to parameter space. This approach enables us to establish a 4D Dirac-like Hamiltonian with fourfold degenerate points. Moreover, we manipulate the energy of tensor monopoles by introducing an additional pump microwave field, generating effective magnetic and pseudo-electric fields and simulating topological parity magnetic effects emerging from the parity anomaly. Utilizing non-adiabatic response methods, we measure the fractional second Chern number for a Dirac valley with a varying mass term, signifying a nontrivial topological phase transition connected to a 5D Yang monopole. Our work lays the foundation for further investigations into higher-dimensional topological states of matter and enriches our comprehension of topological phenomena.

Physics-guided Residual Learning for Probabilistic Power Flow Analysis

Probabilistic power flow (PPF) analysis is critical to power system operation and planning. PPF aims at obtaining probabilistic descriptions of the state of the system with stochastic power injections (e.g., renewable power generation and load demands). Given power injection samples, numerical methods repeatedly run classic power flow (PF) solvers to find the voltage phasors. However, the computational burden is heavy due to many PF simulations. Recently, many data-driven based PF solvers have been proposed due to the availability of sufficient measurements. This paper proposes a novel neural network (NN) framework which can accurately approximate the non-linear AC-PF equations. The trained NN works as a rapid PF solver, significantly reducing the heavy computational burden in classic PPF analysis. Inspired by residual learning, we develop a fully connected linear layer between the input and output in the multilayer perceptron (MLP). To improve the NN training convergence, we propose three schemes to initialize the NN weights of the shortcut connection layer based on the physical characteristics of AC-PF equations. Specifically, two model-based methods require the knowledge of system topology and line parameters, while the purely data-driven method can work without power grid parameters. Numerical tests on five benchmark systems show that our proposed approaches achieve higher accuracy in estimating voltage phasors than existing methods. In addition, three meticulously designed initialization schemes help the NN training process converge faster, which is appealing under limited training time.

Miipher: A Robust Speech Restoration Model Integrating Self-Supervised Speech and Text Representations

Speech restoration (SR) is a task of converting degraded speech signals into high-quality ones. In this study, we propose a robust SR model called Miipher, and apply Miipher to a new SR application: increasing the amount of high-quality training data for speech generation by converting speech samples collected from the Web to studio-quality. To make our SR model robust against various degradation, we use (i) a speech representation extracted from w2v-BERT for the input feature, and (ii) a text representation extracted from transcripts via PnG-BERT as a linguistic conditioning feature. Experiments show that Miipher (i) is robust against various audio degradation and (ii) enable us to train a high-quality text-to-speech (TTS) model from restored speech samples collected from the Web. DiffCR: A Fast Conditional Diffusion Framework for Cloud Removal from Optical Satellite Images

Optical satellite images are a critical data source; however, cloud cover often compromises their quality, hindering image applications and analysis. Consequently, effectively removing clouds from optical satellite images has emerged as a prominent research direction. While recent advancements in cloud removal primarily rely on generative adversarial networks, which may yield suboptimal image quality, diffusion models have demonstrated remarkable success in diverse image-generation tasks, showcasing their potential in addressing this challenge. This paper presents a novel framework called DiffCR, which leverages conditional guided diffusion with deep convolutional networks for high-performance cloud removal for optical satellite imagery. Specifically, we introduce a decoupled encoder for conditional image feature extraction, providing a robust color representation to ensure the close similarity of appearance information between the conditional input and the synthesized output. Moreover, we propose a novel and efficient time and condition fusion block within the cloud removal model to accurately simulate the correspondence between the appearance in the conditional image and the target image at a low computational cost. Extensive experimental evaluations on two commonly used benchmark datasets demonstrate that DiffCR consistently achieves state-of-the-art performance on all metrics, with parameter and computational complexities amounting to only 5.1% and 5.4%, respectively, of those previous best methods. The source code, pre-trained models, and all the experimental results will be publicly available at https://github.com/XavierJiezou/DiffCR upon the paper's acceptance of this work.

Simplifying Low-Light Image Enhancement Networks with Relative Loss Functions

Image enhancement is a common technique used to mitigate issues such as severe noise, low brightness, low contrast, and color deviation in low-light images. However, providing an optimal high-light image as a reference for low-light image enhancement tasks is impossible, which makes the learning process more difficult than other image processing tasks. As a result, although several low-light image enhancement methods have been proposed, most of them are either too complex or insufficient in addressing all the issues in low-light images. In this paper, to make the learning easier in low-light image enhancement, we introduce FLW-Net (Fast and LightWeight Network) and two relative loss functions. Specifically, we first recognize the challenges of the need for a large receptive field to obtain global contrast and the lack of an absolute reference, which limits the simplification of network structures in this task. Then, we propose an efficient global feature information extraction component and two loss functions based on relative information to overcome these challenges. Finally, we conducted comparative experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, and the results confirm that the proposed method can significantly reduce the complexity of supervised low-light image enhancement networks while improving processing effect. Decomposing and Coupling Saliency Map for Lesion Segmentation in Ultrasound Images

Complex scenario of ultrasound image, in which adjacent tissues (i.e., background) share similar intensity with and even contain richer texture patterns than lesion region (i.e., foreground), brings a unique challenge for accurate lesion segmentation. This work presents a decomposition-coupling network, called DC-Net, to deal with this challenge in a (foreground-background) saliency map disentanglement-fusion manner. The DC-Net consists of decomposition and coupling subnets, and the former preliminarily disentangles original image into foreground and background saliency maps, followed by the latter for accurate segmentation under the assistance of saliency prior fusion. The coupling subnet involves three aspects of fusion strategies, including: 1) regional feature aggregation (via differentiable context pooling operator in the encoder) to adaptively preserve local contextual details with the larger receptive field during dimension reduction; 2) relation-aware representation fusion (via cross-correlation fusion module in the decoder) to efficiently fuse low-level visual characteristics and high-level semantic features during resolution restoration; 3) dependency-aware prior incorporation (via coupler) to reinforce foreground-salient representation with the complementary information derived from background representation. Furthermore, a harmonic loss function is introduced to encourage the network to focus more attention on low-confidence and hard samples. The proposed method is evaluated on two ultrasound lesion segmentation tasks, which demonstrates the remarkable performance improvement over existing state-of-the-art methods.

MATNilm: Multi-appliance-task Non-intrusive Load Monitoring with Limited Labeled Data

Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) identifies the status and power consumption of various household appliances by disaggregating the total power usage signal of an entire house. Efficient and accurate load monitoring facilitates user profile establishment, intelligent household energy management, and peak load shifting. This is beneficial for both the end-users and utilities by improving the overall efficiency of a power distribution network. Existing approaches mainly focus on developing an individual model for each appliance. Those approaches typically rely on a large amount of household-labeled data which is hard to collect. In this paper, we propose a multi-appliance-task framework with a training-efficient sample augmentation (SA) scheme that boosts the disaggregation performance with limited labeled data. For each appliance, we develop a shared-hierarchical split structure for its regression and classification tasks. In addition, we also propose a two-dimensional attention mechanism in order to capture spatio-temporal correlations among all appliances. With only one-day training data and limited appliance operation profiles, the proposed SA algorithm can achieve comparable test performance to the case of training with the full dataset. Finally, simulation results show that our proposed approach features a significantly improved performance over many baseline models. The relative errors can be reduced by more than 50% on average. Plasmon mediated coherent population oscillations in molecular aggregates

The strong coherent coupling of quantum emitters to vacuum fluctuations of the light field offers opportunities for manipulating the optical and transport properties of nanomaterials, with potential applications ranging from ultrasensitive all-optical switching to creating polariton condensates. Often, ubiquitous decoherence processes at ambient conditions limit these couplings to such short time scales that the quantum dynamics of the interacting system remains elusive. Prominent examples are strongly coupled exciton-plasmon systems, which, so far, have mostly been investigated by linear optical spectroscopy. Here, we use ultrafast two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy to probe the quantum dynamics of J-aggregate excitons collectively coupled to the spatially structured plasmonic fields of a gold nanoslit array. We observe rich coherent Rabi oscillation dynamics reflecting a plasmon-driven coherent exciton population transfer over mesoscopic distances at room temperature. This opens up new opportunities to manipulate the coherent transport of matter excitations by coupling to vacuum fields.

Shadow molecular dynamics and atomic cluster expansions for flexible charge models

A shadow molecular dynamics scheme for flexible charge models is presented, where the shadow Born-Oppenheimer potential is derived from a coarse-grained approximation of range-separated density functional theory. The interatomic potential, including the atomic electronegativities and the charge-independent short-range part of the potential and force terms, are modeled by the linear atomic cluster expansion (ACE), which provides a computationally efficient alternative to many machine learning methods. The shadow molecular dynamics scheme is based on extended Lagrangian (XL) Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) [Eur. Phys. J. B 94, 164 (2021)]. XL-BOMD provides a stable dynamics, while avoiding the costly computational overhead associated with solving an all-to-all system of equations, which normally is required to determine the relaxed electronic ground state prior to each force evaluation. To demonstrate the proposed shadow molecular dynamics scheme for flexible charge models using the atomic cluster expansion, we emulate the dynamics generated from self-consistent charge density functional tight-binding (SCC-DFTB) theory using a second-order charge equilibration (QEq) model. The charge-independent potentials and electronegativities of the QEq model are trained for a supercell of uranium oxide (UO2) and a molecular system of liquid water. The combined ACE + XL-QEq dynamics are stable over a wide range of temperatures both for the oxide and the molecular systems, and provide a precise sampling of the Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surfaces. Accurate ground Coulomb energies are produced by the ACE-based electronegativity model during an NVE simulation of UO2, predicted to be within 1 meV of those from SCC-DFTB on average during comparable simulations.

A Dual-mode Local Search Algorithm for Solving the Minimum Dominating Set Problem

Given a graph, the minimum dominating set (MinDS) problem is to identify a smallest set $D$ of vertices such that every vertex not in $D$ is adjacent to at least one vertex in $D$. The MinDS problem is a classic $\mathcal{NP}$-hard problem and has been extensively studied because of its many disparate applications in network analysis. To solve this problem efficiently, many heuristic approaches have been proposed to obtain a good solution within an acceptable time limit. However, existing MinDS heuristic algorithms are always limited by various tie-breaking cases when selecting vertices, which slows down the effectiveness of the algorithms. In this paper, we design an efficient local search algorithm for the MinDS problem, named DmDS -- a dual-mode local search framework that probabilistically chooses between two distinct vertex-swapping schemes. We further address limitations of other algorithms by introducing vertex selection criterion based on the frequency of vertices added to solutions to address tie-breaking cases, and a new strategy to improve the quality of the initial solution via a greedy-based strategy integrated with perturbation. We evaluate DmDS against the state-of-the-art algorithms on seven datasets, consisting of 346 instances (or families) with up to tens of millions of vertices. Experimental results show that DmDS obtains the best performance in accuracy for almost all instances and finds much better solutions than state-of-the-art MinDS algorithms on a broad range of large real-world graphs.
