Spin-dependent metalens with intensity-adjustable dual-focused vortex beams

Vortex beams with orbital angular momentum has been attracting tremendous attention due to their considerable applications ranging from optical tweezers to quantum information processing. Metalens, an ultra-compact and multifunctional device, provide a desired platform for designing vortex beams. A spin-dependent metalens can boost the freedom to further satisfy practical applications. By combining geometric phase and propagation phase, we propose and demonstrate an approach to design a spin-dependent metalens generating dual-focused vortex beams along longitudinal or transverse direction, i.e., metalenses with predesigned spin-dependent phase profiles. Under the illumination of an elliptical polarization incident beam, two spin-dependent focused vortex beams can be observed, and the relative focal intensity of them can be easily adjusted by modulating the ellipticity of the incident beam. Moreover, we also demonstrated that the separate distance between these dual-focused beams and their topological charges could be simultaneously tailored at will, which may have a profound impact on optical trapping and manipulation in photonics.

Revisit prompt $J/ψ$ production in associated with Higgs Boson via gluon fusion at the LHC

The production of charmonium associated with Higgs boson via gluon fusion has been investigated in Ref.[Phys.Rev.D66,114002(2002)], in which they considered the contribution of final Higgs boson radiation off the charm quark at tree level and found that this process is to be far too rare to be observable in any of the considered experiments. In this paper, the production of prompt $J/ψ$ associated with Higgs boson via gluon fusion at the 14 TeV LHC within the factorization formalism of NRQCD is revisited. After considering the contribution from the final Higgs boson radiation off the top quark in the loop, which is {more than} three orders of magnitudes over the charm quark at tree level, the production of prompt $J/ψ$ associated with Higgs boson has great potential to be detected. The prompt $J/ψ$ production includes the direct production and indirect production via radiative or hadronic decays of high excited charmonium states. For the direct $J/ψ+ H$ production via gluon fusion loop-induced, the ${}^{3}S^{(8)}_1$ Fock state gives dominant contribution to the cross section, which is about 95\% to the total direct production. The indirect contribution via loop-induced is appreciable, since the summation of which from $ψ(2S) + H$, $χ_{c1} + H$ and $χ_{c2} + H$ is about $34\%$ to the total cross section of prompt $J/ψ+ H$. While the indirect contribution from $χ_{c0} + H$ is tiny, which can be neglected. With the great potential to be detected, prompt $J/ψ$ production in associated with Higgs boson can help us to further understand the mechanism of colour-octet, as well as can be useful to further investigate the coupling of the Higgs boson and fermion.

Personalized Image Semantic Segmentation

Semantic segmentation models trained on public datasets have achieved great success in recent years. However, these models didn't consider the personalization issue of segmentation though it is important in practice. In this paper, we address the problem of personalized image segmentation. The objective is to generate more accurate segmentation results on unlabeled personalized images by investigating the data's personalized traits. To open up future research in this area, we collect a large dataset containing various users' personalized images called PIS (Personalized Image Semantic Segmentation). We also survey some recent researches related to this problem and report their performance on our dataset. Furthermore, by observing the correlation among a user's personalized images, we propose a baseline method that incorporates the inter-image context when segmenting certain images. Extensive experiments show that our method outperforms the existing methods on the proposed dataset. The code and the PIS dataset will be made publicly available.

Layer-dependent Optical and Dielectric Properties of Large-size PdSe$_2$ Films Grown by Chemical Vapor Deposition

Palladium diselenide (PdSe$_2$), a new type of two-dimensional noble metal dihalides (NMDCs), has received widespread attention for its excellent electrical and optoelectronic properties. Herein, high-quality continuous centimeter-scale PdSe$_2$ films with layers in the range of 3L-15L were grown using Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method. The absorption spectra and DFT calculations revealed that the bandgap of the PdSe$_2$ films decreased with increasing number of layers, which is due to PdSe$_2$ enhancement of orbital hybridization. Spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) analysis shows that PdSe2 has significant layer-dependent optical and dielectric properties. This is mainly due to the unique strong exciton effect of the thin PdSe$_2$ film in the UV band. In particular, the effect of temperature on the optical properties of PdSe$_2$ films was also observed, and the thermo-optical coefficients of PdSe$_2$ films with different number of layers were calculated. This study provides fundamental guidance for the fabrication and optimization of PdSe$_2$-based optoelectronic devices.

Probing double hadron resonances by the complex scaling method

Many newly discovered excited states are interpreted as bound states of hadrons. Can these hadrons also form resonant states? In this paper, we extend the complex scaling method (CSM) to calculate the bound state and resonant state consistently for the $Λ_c D(\bar D)$ and $Λ_c Λ_c (\bar Λ_c)$ systems. For these systems, the $π, η, ρ$ meson exchange contributions are suppressed, the contributions of intermediate- and short-range forces from $σ/ω$ exchange are dominant. Our results indicate that $Λ_c D$ system can not form bound state and resonant state. There exist resonant states in a wide range of parameters for $Λ_c \bar D$ and $Λ_c Λ_c (\bar Λ_c)$ systems. For these systems, the larger bound state energy, the easier to form resonant states. Among all the resonant states, the energies and widths of the P wave resonant states are smaller and more stable, which is possible to be observed in the experiments. The energies of D and F wave resonant states can reach dozens of MeV and the widths can reach hundreds of MeV.

Parallel Tacotron 2: A Non-Autoregressive Neural TTS Model with Differentiable Duration Modeling

This paper introduces Parallel Tacotron 2, a non-autoregressive neural text-to-speech model with a fully differentiable duration model which does not require supervised duration signals. The duration model is based on a novel attention mechanism and an iterative reconstruction loss based on Soft Dynamic Time Warping, this model can learn token-frame alignments as well as token durations automatically. Experimental results show that Parallel Tacotron 2 outperforms baselines in subjective naturalness in several diverse multi speaker evaluations. Its duration control capability is also demonstrated.

Injecting Text in Self-Supervised Speech Pretraining

Self-supervised pretraining for Automated Speech Recognition (ASR) has shown varied degrees of success. In this paper, we propose to jointly learn representations during pretraining from two different modalities: speech and text. The proposed method, tts4pretrain complements the power of contrastive learning in self-supervision with linguistic/lexical representations derived from synthesized speech, effectively learning from untranscribed speech and unspoken text. Lexical learning in the speech encoder is enforced through an additional sequence loss term that is coupled with contrastive loss during pretraining. We demonstrate that this novel pretraining method yields Word Error Rate (WER) reductions of 10% relative on the well-benchmarked, Librispeech task over a state-of-the-art baseline pretrained with wav2vec2.0 only. The proposed method also serves as an effective strategy to compensate for the lack of transcribed speech, effectively matching the performance of 5000 hours of transcribed speech with just 100 hours of transcribed speech on the AMI meeting transcription task. Finally, we demonstrate WER reductions of up to 15% on an in-house Voice Search task over traditional pretraining. Incorporating text into encoder pretraining is complimentary to rescoring with a larger or in-domain language model, resulting in additional 6% relative reduction in WER.

Attention-based Neural Load Forecasting: A Dynamic Feature Selection Approach

Encoder-decoder-based recurrent neural network (RNN) has made significant progress in sequence-to-sequence learning tasks such as machine translation and conversational models. Recent works have shown the advantage of this type of network in dealing with various time series forecasting tasks. The present paper focuses on the problem of multi-horizon short-term load forecasting, which plays a key role in the power system's planning and operation. Leveraging the encoder-decoder RNN, we develop an attention model to select the relevant features and similar temporal information adaptively. First, input features are assigned with different weights by a feature selection attention layer, while the updated historical features are encoded by a bi-directional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) layer. Then, a decoder with hierarchical temporal attention enables a similar day selection, which re-evaluates the importance of historical information at each time step. Numerical results tested on the dataset of the global energy forecasting competition 2014 show that our proposed model significantly outperforms some existing forecasting schemes.

Online Dictionary Learning Based Fault and Cyber Attack Detection for Power Systems

The emerging wide area monitoring systems (WAMS) have brought significant improvements in electric grids' situational awareness. However, the newly introduced system can potentially increase the risk of cyber-attacks, which may be disguised as normal physical disturbances. This paper deals with the event and intrusion detection problem by leveraging a stream data mining classifier (Hoeffding adaptive tree) with semi-supervised learning techniques to distinguish cyber-attacks from regular system perturbations accurately. First, our proposed approach builds a dictionary by learning higher-level features from unlabeled data. Then, the labeled data are represented as sparse linear combinations of learned dictionary atoms. We capitalize on those sparse codes to train the online classifier along with efficient change detectors. We conduct numerical experiments with industrial control systems cyber-attack datasets. We consider five different scenarios: short-circuit faults, line maintenance, remote tripping command injection, relay setting change, as well as false data injection. The data are generated based on a modified IEEE 9-bus system. Simulation results show that our proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art method.

Mitigating Greenhouse Gas Emissions Through Generative Adversarial Networks Based Wildfire Prediction

Over the past decade, the number of wildfire has increased significantly around the world, especially in the State of California. The high-level concentration of greenhouse gas (GHG) emitted by wildfires aggravates global warming that further increases the risk of more fires. Therefore, an accurate prediction of wildfire occurrence greatly helps in preventing large-scale and long-lasting wildfires and reducing the consequent GHG emissions. Various methods have been explored for wildfire risk prediction. However, the complex correlations among a lot of natural and human factors and wildfire ignition make the prediction task very challenging. In this paper, we develop a deep learning based data augmentation approach for wildfire risk prediction. We build a dataset consisting of diverse features responsible for fire ignition and utilize a conditional tabular generative adversarial network to explore the underlying patterns between the target value of risk levels and all involved features. For fair and comprehensive comparisons, we compare our proposed scheme with five other baseline methods where the former outperformed most of them. To corroborate the robustness, we have also tested the performance of our method with another dataset that also resulted in better efficiency. By adopting the proposed method, we can take preventive strategies of wildfire mitigation to reduce global GHG emissions.

DRQN-based 3D Obstacle Avoidance with a Limited Field of View

In this paper, we propose a map-based end-to-end DRL approach for three-dimensional (3D) obstacle avoidance in a partially observed environment, which is applied to achieve autonomous navigation for an indoor mobile robot using a depth camera with a narrow field of view. We first train a neural network with LSTM units in a 3D simulator of mobile robots to approximate the Q-value function in double DRQN. We also use a curriculum learning strategy to accelerate and stabilize the training process. Then we deploy the trained model to a real robot to perform 3D obstacle avoidance in its navigation. We evaluate the proposed approach both in the simulated environment and on a robot in the real world. The experimental results show that the approach is efficient and easy to be deployed, and it performs well for 3D obstacle avoidance with a narrow observation angle, which outperforms other existing DRL-based models by 15.5% on success rate.

The power of flexible lattice in Ca3Ru2O7: Exquisite control of the electrical transport via anisotropic magnetostriction

Ca3Ru2O7 is a correlated and spin-orbit-coupled system with an extraordinary anisotropy. It is both interesting and unique largely because this material exhibits conflicting phenomena that are often utterly inconsistent with traditional precedents, particularly, the quantum oscillations in the nonmetallic state and colossal magnetoresistivity achieved by avoiding a fully spin-polarized state. This work focuses on the relationship between the lattice and transport properties along each crystalline axis and reveals that application of magnetic field, H, along different crystalline axes readily stretches or shrinks the lattice in a uniaxial manner, resulting in distinct electronic states. Furthermore, application of modest pressure drastically amplifies the anisotropic magnetoelastic effect, leading to either an occurrence of a robust metallic state at H || hard axis or a reentrance of the nonmetallic state at H || easy axis. Ca3Ru2O7 presents a rare lattice-dependent magnetotransport mechanism, in which the extraordinary lattice flexibility enables an exquisite control of the electronic state via magnetically stretching or shrinking the crystalline axes, and the spin polarization plays an unconventional role unfavorable for maximizing conductivity. At the heart of the intriguing physics is the anisotropic magnetostriction that leads to exotic states.

A Survey on Neural Network Interpretability

Along with the great success of deep neural networks, there is also growing concern about their black-box nature. The interpretability issue affects people's trust on deep learning systems. It is also related to many ethical problems, e.g., algorithmic discrimination. Moreover, interpretability is a desired property for deep networks to become powerful tools in other research fields, e.g., drug discovery and genomics. In this survey, we conduct a comprehensive review of the neural network interpretability research. We first clarify the definition of interpretability as it has been used in many different contexts. Then we elaborate on the importance of interpretability and propose a novel taxonomy organized along three dimensions: type of engagement (passive vs. active interpretation approaches), the type of explanation, and the focus (from local to global interpretability). This taxonomy provides a meaningful 3D view of distribution of papers from the relevant literature as two of the dimensions are not simply categorical but allow ordinal subcategories. Finally, we summarize the existing interpretability evaluation methods and suggest possible research directions inspired by our new taxonomy.

Neighbor-Vote: Improving Monocular 3D Object Detection through Neighbor Distance Voting

As cameras are increasingly deployed in new application domains such as autonomous driving, performing 3D object detection on monocular images becomes an important task for visual scene understanding. Recent advances on monocular 3D object detection mainly rely on the ``pseudo-LiDAR'' generation, which performs monocular depth estimation and lifts the 2D pixels to pseudo 3D points. However, depth estimation from monocular images, due to its poor accuracy, leads to inevitable position shift of pseudo-LiDAR points within the object. Therefore, the predicted bounding boxes may suffer from inaccurate location and deformed shape. In this paper, we present a novel neighbor-voting method that incorporates neighbor predictions to ameliorate object detection from severely deformed pseudo-LiDAR point clouds. Specifically, each feature point around the object forms their own predictions, and then the ``consensus'' is achieved through voting. In this way, we can effectively combine the neighbors' predictions with local prediction and achieve more accurate 3D detection. To further enlarge the difference between the foreground region of interest (ROI) pseudo-LiDAR points and the background points, we also encode the ROI prediction scores of 2D foreground pixels into the corresponding pseudo-LiDAR points. We conduct extensive experiments on the KITTI benchmark to validate the merits of our proposed method. Our results on the bird's eye view detection outperform the state-of-the-art performance by a large margin, especially for the ``hard'' level detection.

Computing molecular excited states on a D-Wave quantum annealer

The possibility of using quantum computers for electronic structure calculations has opened up a promising avenue for computational chemistry. Towards this direction, numerous algorithmic advances have been made in the last five years. The potential of quantum annealers, which are the prototypes of adiabatic quantum computers, is yet to be fully explored. In this work, we demonstrate the use of a D-Wave quantum annealer for the calculation of excited electronic states of molecular systems. These simulations play an important role in a number of areas, such as photovoltaics, semiconductor technology and nanoscience. The excited states are treated using two methods, time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) and time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT), both within a commonly used Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA). The resulting TDA eigenvalue equations are solved on a D-Wave quantum annealer using the Quantum Annealer Eigensolver (QAE), developed previously. The method is shown to reproduce a typical basis set convergence on the example H$_2$ molecule and is also applied to several other molecular species. Characteristic properties such as transition dipole moments and oscillator strengths are computed as well. Three potential energy profiles for excited states are computed for NH$_3$ as a function of the molecular geometry. Similar to previous studies, the accuracy of the method is dependent on the accuracy of the intermediate meta-heuristic software called qbsolv.

Residual Energy-Based Models for End-to-End Speech Recognition

End-to-end models with auto-regressive decoders have shown impressive results for automatic speech recognition (ASR). These models formulate the sequence-level probability as a product of the conditional probabilities of all individual tokens given their histories. However, the performance of locally normalised models can be sub-optimal because of factors such as exposure bias. Consequently, the model distribution differs from the underlying data distribution. In this paper, the residual energy-based model (R-EBM) is proposed to complement the auto-regressive ASR model to close the gap between the two distributions. Meanwhile, R-EBMs can also be regarded as utterance-level confidence estimators, which may benefit many downstream tasks. Experiments on a 100hr LibriSpeech dataset show that R-EBMs can reduce the word error rates (WERs) by 8.2%/6.7% while improving areas under precision-recall curves of confidence scores by 12.6%/28.4% on test-clean/test-other sets. Furthermore, on a state-of-the-art model using self-supervised learning (wav2vec 2.0), R-EBMs still significantly improves both the WER and confidence estimation performance.

Measuring optical vortices by means of dual shearing-type Sagnac interferometers

Measuring the positions of optical vortices is an essential part in the researches of speckles and adaptive optics. The measurement accuracy is restricted by the performance of optical devices and the properties of optical vortices, such as density and size. In order to achieve high accuracy and wide range of application, the dual shearing-type Sagnac interferometers is proposed using two shearing plates to adjust the precision of optical vortices measurement. The shearing displacements are able to balance the measuring precision and the value of the intensity ratio point to provide optimum measurement performance. This method is useful for the observation of optical vortices with different sizes and densities, especially for the high density condition.

Unsupervised Learning of Disentangled Speech Content and Style Representation

We present an approach for unsupervised learning of speech representation disentangling contents and styles. Our model consists of: (1) a local encoder that captures per-frame information; (2) a global encoder that captures per-utterance information; and (3) a conditional decoder that reconstructs speech given local and global latent variables. Our experiments show that (1) the local latent variables encode speech contents, as reconstructed speech can be recognized by ASR with low word error rates (WER), even with a different global encoding; (2) the global latent variables encode speaker style, as reconstructed speech shares speaker identity with the source utterance of the global encoding. Additionally, we demonstrate an useful application from our pre-trained model, where we can train a speaker recognition model from the global latent variables and achieve high accuracy by fine-tuning with as few data as one label per speaker.
