Prompt $J/ψ$ production in associated with top quark pair at the LHC

In this work, we investigate the prompt $J/ψ$ production in associated with top quark pair to leading order in the nonrelativistic QCD factorization formalism at the LHC with $\sqrt{s} =13$ TeV. In addition to the contribution from direct $J/ψ$ production, we also include the indirect contribution from the directly produced heavier charmmonia $χ_{cJ}$ and $ψ^\prime$. We present the numerical results for the total and differential cross sections and find that the $\sideset{^3}{^{(8)}_1}{\mathop{S}}$ states give the dominant contributions. The prompt $t\bar t J/ψ$ signatures at the LHC are analyzed in the tetralepton channel $pp\to (t\to W^+(\ell^+ν)b) (\bar t \to W^-(\ell^- \bar ν)\bar b) (J/ψ\toμ^+μ^-)$ and trilepton channel $pp\to (t\to W(q q^\prime)b) ( t \to W(\ell ν) b) (J/ψ\toμ^+μ^-)$, with the $J/ψ$ mesons decaying into muon pair, and the top quarks decaying leptonically or hadronically. We find that $t\bar t J/ψ$ proudction can be potentially detected at the LHC, whose measurement is useful to test the heavy quarkonium production mechanism.

Preferred States of Open Electronic Systems

System-environment interaction may introduce dynamic destruction of quantum coherence, resulting in a special representation named as pointer states. Here, pointer states of an open electronic system are studied. The decoherence effect is taken into account through two different models which are Büttiker's virtual probe model and electron-phonon interaction in the polaron picture. The pointer states of the system with different coupling strength are investigated. The pointer states are identified by tracking the eigenstates of the density matrix in real-time evolution. It is found that the pointer states can emerge for arbitrary coupling strength. And the pointer states deform to the eigenstates of the system in the strong coupling limit, which indicates the vanish of quantumness in the strong coupling limit.

Accessibility of Virtual Reality Locomotion Modalities to Adults and Minors

Virtual reality (VR) is an important new technology that is fun-damentally changing the way people experience entertainment and education content. Due to the fact that most currently available VR products are one size fits all, the accessibility of the content design and user interface design, even for healthy children is not well understood. It requires more research to ensure that children can have equally good user compared to adults in VR. In our study, we seek to explore accessibility of locomotion in VR between healthy adults and minors along both objective and subjective dimensions. We performed a user experience experiment where subjects completed a simple task of moving and touching underwater animals in VR using one of four different locomotion modalities, as well as real-world walking without wearing VR headsets as the baseline. Our results show that physical body movement that mirrors real-world movement exclusively is the least preferred by both adults and minors. However, within the different modalities of controller assisted locomotion there are variations between adults and minors for preference and challenge levels.

STM Study of Quantum Hall Isospin Ferromagnetic States of Zero Landau Level in Graphene Monolayer

A number of quantum Hall isospin ferromagnetic (QHIFM) states have been predicted in the relativistic zero Landau level (LL) of graphene monolayer. These states, especially the states at LL filling factor v = 0 of charge-neutral graphene, have been extensively explored in experiment. To date, identification of these high-field broken-symmetry states has mostly relied on macroscopic transport techniques. Here, we study splitting of the zero LL of graphene at partial filling and demonstrate a direct approach by imaging the QHIFM states at atomic scale with a scanning tunneling microscope. At half filling of the zero LL (v = 0), the system is in a spin unpolarized state and we observe a linear magnetic-field-scaling of valley splitting. Simultaneously, the spin degeneracy in the two valleys is also lifted by the magnetic fields. When the Fermi level lies inside the spin-polarized states (at v = 1 or -1), the spin splitting is dramatically enhanced because of the strong many-body effects. At v = 0, we direct image the wavefunctions of the QHIFM states at atomic scale and observe an interaction-driven density wave featuring a Kekule distortion, which is responsible for the large gap at charge neutrality point in high magnetic fields.

Interpretable Classification from Skin Cancer Histology Slides Using Deep Learning: A Retrospective Multicenter Study

For diagnosing melanoma, hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained tissue slides remains the gold standard. These images contain quantitative information in different magnifications. In the present study, we investigated whether deep convolutional neural networks can extract structural features of complex tissues directly from these massive size images in a patched way. In order to face the challenge arise from morphological diversity in histopathological slides, we built a multicenter database of 2241 digital whole-slide images from 1321 patients from 2008 to 2018. We trained both ResNet50 and Vgg19 using over 9.95 million patches by transferring learning, and test performance with two kinds of critical classifications: malignant melanomas versus benign nevi in separate and mixed magnification; and distinguish among nevi in maximum magnification. The CNNs achieves superior performance across both tasks, demonstrating an AI capable of classifying skin cancer in the analysis from histopathological images. For making the classifications reasonable, the visualization of CNN representations is furthermore used to identify cells between melanoma and nevi. Regions of interest (ROI) are also located which are significantly helpful, giving pathologists more support of correctly diagnosis.

A Light Dual-Task Neural Network for Haze Removal

Single-image dehazing is a challenging problem due to its ill-posed nature. Existing methods rely on a suboptimal two-step approach, where an intermediate product like a depth map is estimated, based on which the haze-free image is subsequently generated using an artificial prior formula. In this paper, we propose a light dual-task Neural Network called LDTNet that restores the haze-free image in one shot. We use transmission map estimation as an auxiliary task to assist the main task, haze removal, in feature extraction and to enhance the generalization of the network. In LDTNet, the haze-free image and the transmission map are produced simultaneously. As a result, the artificial prior is reduced to the smallest extent. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our algorithm achieves superior performance against the state-of-the-art methods on both synthetic and real-world images.

Observation of Giant Quantized Phonon Modes in Graphene via Tunneling Spectra

Phonons, the fundamental vibrational modes of a crystal lattice, play a crucial role in determining electronic properties of materials through electron-phonon interaction. However, it has proved difficult to directly probe the phonon modes of materials in electrical measurements. Here, we report the observation of giant quantized phonon peaks of the K and K out-of-plane phonon in graphene monolayer in magnetic fields via tunneling spectra, which are usually used to measure local electronic properties of materials. A perpendicular magnetic field quantizes massless Dirac fermions in graphene into discrete Landau levels (LLs). We demonstrate that emission or absorption of phonons of quasiparticles in the LLs of graphene generates a new sequence of discrete states: the quantized phonon modes. In our tunneling spectra, the intensity of the observed phonon peaks is about 50 times larger than that of the LLs because that the K and K out-of-plane phonon opens an inelastic tunneling channel. We also show that it is possible to switch on off the quantized phonon modes at nanoscale by controlling interactions between graphene and the supporting substrate.

LibriTTS: A Corpus Derived from LibriSpeech for Text-to-Speech

This paper introduces a new speech corpus called "LibriTTS" designed for text-to-speech use. It is derived from the original audio and text materials of the LibriSpeech corpus, which has been used for training and evaluating automatic speech recognition systems. The new corpus inherits desired properties of the LibriSpeech corpus while addressing a number of issues which make LibriSpeech less than ideal for text-to-speech work. The released corpus consists of 585 hours of speech data at 24kHz sampling rate from 2,456 speakers and the corresponding texts. Experimental results show that neural end-to-end TTS models trained from the LibriTTS corpus achieved above 4.0 in mean opinion scores in naturalness in five out of six evaluation speakers. The corpus is freely available for download from http://www.openslr.org/60/.

HLT@SUDA at SemEval 2019 Task 1: UCCA Graph Parsing as Constituent Tree Parsing

This paper describes a simple UCCA semantic graph parsing approach. The key idea is to convert a UCCA semantic graph into a constituent tree, in which extra labels are deliberately designed to mark remote edges and discontinuous nodes for future recovery. In this way, we can make use of existing syntactic parsing techniques. Based on the data statistics, we recover discontinuous nodes directly according to the output labels of the constituent parser and use a biaffine classification model to recover the more complex remote edges. The classification model and the constituent parser are simultaneously trained under the multi-task learning framework. We use the multilingual BERT as extra features in the open tracks. Our system ranks the first place in the six English/German closed/open tracks among seven participating systems. For the seventh cross-lingual track, where there is little training data for French, we propose a language embedding approach to utilize English and German training data, and our result ranks the second place.

Phase structure of three flavor QCD in external magnetic fields using HISQ fermions

We study the phase structure of QCD with three degenerate flavors in the external magnetic fields using highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ). The simulations are performed on $16^3\times 6$ lattice. In order to investigate the quark mass dependence of the chiral transition we choose the values of the bare quark masses 0.015 and 0.0009375 in the lattice unit, corresponding to $m_π=320$ MeV and 80 MeV in the continuum limit. We found no indication of a first order phase transition in the current window of quark masses and external magnetic fields. Unlike to the case with standard staggered fermions inverse magnetic catalysis is always observed at about the critical temperature. The microscopic origin of this phenomena are further discussed by looking into the Dirac eigenvalue spectrum.

Path-averaged Kinetic Equation for Stochastic Systems

For a stochastic system, its evolution from one state to another can have a large number of possible paths. Non-uniformity in the field of system variables leads the local dynamics in state transition varies considerably from path to path and thus the distribution of the paths affects statistical characteristics of the system. Such a characteristic can be referred to as path-dependence of a system, and long-time correlation is an intrinsic feature of path-dependence systems. We employed a local path density operator to describe the distribution of state transition paths, and based on which we derived a new kinetic equation for path-dependent systems. The kinetic equation is similar in form to the Kramers-Moyal expansion, but with its expansion coefficients determined by the cumulants with respect to state transition paths, instead of transition moments. This characteristic makes it capable of accounting for the non-local feature of systems, which is essential in studies of large scale systems where the path-dependence is prominent. Short-time correlation approximation is also discussed. It shows that the cumulants of state transition paths are equivalent to jump moments when correlation time scales are infinitesimal, as makes the kinetic equation derived in this paper has the same physical consideration of the Fokker-Planck equation for Markov processes.

Hierarchical feature fusion framework for frequency recognition in SSVEP-based BCIs

Effective frequency recognition algorithms are critical in steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). In this study, we present a hierarchical feature fusion framework which can be used to design high-performance frequency recognition methods. The proposed framework includes two primary technique for fusing features: spatial dimension fusion (SD) and frequency dimension fusion (FD). Both SD and FD fusions are obtained using a weighted strategy with a nonlinear function. To assess our novel methods, we used the correlated component analysis (CORRCA) method to investigate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed framework. Experimental results were obtained from a benchmark dataset of thirty-five subjects and indicate that the extended CORRCA method used within the framework significantly outperforms the original CORCCA method. Accordingly, the proposed framework holds promise to enhance the performance of frequency recognition methods in SSVEP-based BCIs.

Explicablility as Minimizing Distance from Expected Behavior

In order to have effective human-AI collaboration, it is necessary to address how the AI agent's behavior is being perceived by the humans-in-the-loop. When the agent's task plans are generated without such considerations, they may often demonstrate inexplicable behavior from the human's point of view. This problem may arise due to the human's partial or inaccurate understanding of the agent's planning model. This may have serious implications from increased cognitive load to more serious concerns of safety around a physical agent. In this paper, we address this issue by modeling plan explicability as a function of the distance between a plan that agent makes and the plan that human expects it to make. We learn a regression model for mapping the plan distances to explicability scores of plans and develop an anytime search algorithm that can use this model as a heuristic to come up with progressively explicable plans. We evaluate the effectiveness of our approach in a simulated autonomous car domain and a physical robot domain.

Progressive Explanation Generation for Human-robot Teaming

Generating explanation to explain its behavior is an essential capability for a robotic teammate. Explanations help human partners better understand the situation and maintain trust of their teammates. Prior work on robot generating explanations focuses on providing the reasoning behind its decision making. These approaches, however, fail to heed the cognitive requirement of understanding an explanation. In other words, while they provide the right explanations from the explainer's perspective, the explainee part of the equation is ignored. In this work, we address an important aspect along this direction that contributes to a better understanding of a given explanation, which we refer to as the progressiveness of explanations. A progressive explanation improves understanding by limiting the cognitive effort required at each step of making the explanation. As a result, such explanations are expected to be smoother and hence easier to understand. A general formulation of progressive explanation is presented. Algorithms are provided based on several alternative quantifications of cognitive effort as an explanation is being made, which are evaluated in a standard planning competition domain.

Transfer Meets Hybrid: A Synthetic Approach for Cross-Domain Collaborative Filtering with Text

Collaborative filtering (CF) is the key technique for recommender systems (RSs). CF exploits user-item behavior interactions (e.g., clicks) only and hence suffers from the data sparsity issue. One research thread is to integrate auxiliary information such as product reviews and news titles, leading to hybrid filtering methods. Another thread is to transfer knowledge from other source domains such as improving the movie recommendation with the knowledge from the book domain, leading to transfer learning methods. In real-world life, no single service can satisfy a user's all information needs. Thus it motivates us to exploit both auxiliary and source information for RSs in this paper. We propose a novel neural model to smoothly enable Transfer Meeting Hybrid (TMH) methods for cross-domain recommendation with unstructured text in an end-to-end manner. TMH attentively extracts useful content from unstructured text via a memory module and selectively transfers knowledge from a source domain via a transfer network. On two real-world datasets, TMH shows better performance in terms of three ranking metrics by comparing with various baselines. We conduct thorough analyses to understand how the text content and transferred knowledge help the proposed model.

Interactive Plan Explicability in Human-Robot Teaming

Human-robot teaming is one of the most important applications of artificial intelligence in the fast-growing field of robotics. For effective teaming, a robot must not only maintain a behavioral model of its human teammates to project the team status, but also be aware that its human teammates' expectation of itself. Being aware of the human teammates' expectation leads to robot behaviors that better align with human expectation, thus facilitating more efficient and potentially safer teams. Our work addresses the problem of human-robot cooperation with the consideration of such teammate models in sequential domains by leveraging the concept of plan explicability. In plan explicability, however, the human is considered solely as an observer. In this paper, we extend plan explicability to consider interactive settings where human and robot behaviors can influence each other. We term this new measure as Interactive Plan Explicability. We compare the joint plan generated with the consideration of this measure using the fast forward planner (FF) with the plan created by FF without such consideration, as well as the plan created with actual human subjects. Results indicate that the explicability score of plans generated by our algorithm is comparable to the human plan, and better than the plan created by FF without considering the measure, implying that the plans created by our algorithms align better with expected joint plans of the human during execution. This can lead to more efficient collaboration in practice.

Diluted Oxide Interfaces with Tunable Ground States

The metallic interface between two oxide insulators, such as LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO), provides new opportunities for electronics and spintronics. However, due to the presence of multiple orbital populations, tailoring the interfacial properties such as the ground state and metal-insulator transitions remains challenging. Here, we report an unforeseen tunability of the phase diagram of LAO/STO by alloying LAO with a ferromagnetic LaMnO3 insulator without forming lattice disorder and at the same time without changing the polarity of the system. By increasing the Mn-doping level, x, of LaAl1-xMnxO3/STO, the interface undergoes a Lifshitz transition at x = 0.225 across a critical carrier density of nc= 2.8E13 cm-2, where a peak TSC =255 mK of superconducting transition temperature is observed. Moreover, the LaAl1-xMnxO3 turns ferromagnetic at x >=0.25. Remarkably, at x = 0.3, where the metallic interface is populated by only dxy electrons and just before it becomes insulating, we achieve reproducibly a same device with both signatures of superconductivity and clear anomalous Hall effect. This provides a unique and effective way to tailor oxide interfaces for designing on-demand electronic and spintronic devices.
