Non-invasive dynamic or wide-field imaging through opaque layers and around corners

In turbid media, scattering of light scrambles information of the incident beam and represents an obstacle to optical imaging. Noninvasive imaging through opaque layers is challenging for dynamic and wide-field objects due to unreliable image reconstruction processes. We here propose a new perspective to solve these problems: rather than using the full point-spread-function (PSF), the wave distortions in scattering layers can be characterized with only the phase of the optical-transfer-function (OTF, the Fourier transform of PSF), with which diffraction-limit images can be analytically solved. We then develop a method that exploits the redundant information dynamic objects, and can reliably and rapidly recover OTFs' phases within several iterations. It enables not only noninvasive video imaging at 25 ~ 200 Hz of a moving object hidden inside turbid media, but also imaging under weak illumination that is inaccessible with previous methods. Furthermore, by scanning a localized illumination on the object plane, we propose a wide-field imaging approach, with which we demonstrate an application where a photoluminescent sample hidden behind four-layers of opaque polythene films is imaged with a modified multi-photon excitation microscopy setup.

Dynamic Hierarchical Empirical Bayes: A Predictive Model Applied to Online Advertising

Predicting keywords performance, such as number of impressions, click-through rate (CTR), conversion rate (CVR), revenue per click (RPC), and cost per click (CPC), is critical for sponsored search in the online advertising industry. An interesting phenomenon is that, despite the size of the overall data, the data are very sparse at the individual unit level. To overcome the sparsity and leverage hierarchical information across the data structure, we propose a Dynamic Hierarchical Empirical Bayesian (DHEB) model that dynamically determines the hierarchy through a data-driven process and provides shrinkage-based estimations. Our method is also equipped with an efficient empirical approach to derive inferences through the hierarchy. We evaluate the proposed method in both simulated and real-world datasets and compare to several competitive models. The results favor the proposed method among all comparisons in terms of both accuracy and efficiency. In the end, we design a two-phase system to serve prediction in real time.

Unsupervised Image Super-Resolution using Cycle-in-Cycle Generative Adversarial Networks

We consider the single image super-resolution problem in a more general case that the low-/high-resolution pairs and the down-sampling process are unavailable. Different from traditional super-resolution formulation, the low-resolution input is further degraded by noises and blurring. This complicated setting makes supervised learning and accurate kernel estimation impossible. To solve this problem, we resort to unsupervised learning without paired data, inspired by the recent successful image-to-image translation applications. With generative adversarial networks (GAN) as the basic component, we propose a Cycle-in-Cycle network structure to tackle the problem within three steps. First, the noisy and blurry input is mapped to a noise-free low-resolution space. Then the intermediate image is up-sampled with a pre-trained deep model. Finally, we fine-tune the two modules in an end-to-end manner to get the high-resolution output. Experiments on NTIRE2018 datasets demonstrate that the proposed unsupervised method achieves comparable results as the state-of-the-art supervised models.

Inversion of stellar spectral radiative properties based on multiple star catalogues

The spectral flux density of stars can indicate their atmospheric physical properties. A detector can obtain any band flux density at the design stage. However, the band flux density is confirmed and fixed in the process of operation because of the restriction of filters. Other band flux densities cannot be obtained through the same detector. In this study, a computational model of stellar spectral flux density is established based on basic physical parameters which are effective temperature and angular parameter. The stochastic particle swarm optimization algorithm is adopted to address this issue with appropriately chosen values of the algorithm parameters. Four star catalogues are studied and consist of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST), Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX), and Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS). The given flux densities from catalogues are input parameters. Stellar effective temperatures and angular parameters are inversed using the given flux densities according to SPSO algorithm. Then the flux density is calculated according to Planck's law on the basis of stellar effective temperatures and angular parameters. The calculated flux density is compared with the given value from catalogues. It is found that the inversion results are in good agreement for all bands of the MSX and 2MASS catalogues, whereas they do not agree well in some bands of the LAMOST and WISE catalogues. Based on the results, data from the MSX and 2MASS catalogues can be used to calculate the spectral flux density at different wavelengths of given wavelength ranges. The stellar flux density is obtained and can provide data support and an effective reference for detection and recognition of stars.

Robustness Analysis of Pedestrian Detectors for Surveillance

To obtain effective pedestrian detection results in surveillance video, there have been many methods proposed to handle the problems from severe occlusion, pose variation, clutter background, \emph{etc}. Besides detection accuracy, a robust surveillance video system should be stable to video quality degradation by network transmission, environment variation, etc. In this study, we conduct the research on the robustness of pedestrian detection algorithms to video quality degradation. The main contribution of this work includes the following three aspects. First, a large-scale Distorted Surveillance Video Data Set (DSurVD) is constructed from high-quality video sequences and their corresponding distorted versions. Second, we design a method to evaluate detection stability and a robustness measure called Robustness Quadrangle, which can be adopted to visualize detection accuracy of pedestrian detection algorithms on high-quality video sequences and stability with video quality degradation. Third, the robustness of seven existing pedestrian detection algorithms is evaluated by the built DSurVD. Experimental results show that the robustness can be further improved for existing pedestrian detection algorithms. Additionally, we provide much in-depth discussion on how different distortion types influence the performance of pedestrian detection algorithms, which is important to design effective pedestrian detection algorithms for surveillance. The CR immersion into a sphere with the degenerate CR Gauss map

It is a classical problem in algebraic geometry to characterize the algebraic subvariety by using the Gauss map. In this note, we try to develop the analogue theory in CR geometry. In particular, under some assumptions, we show that a CR map between spheres is totally geodesic if and only if the CR Gauss map of the image is degenerate.

Deterministic realization of collective measurements via photonic quantum walks

Collective measurements on identically prepared quantum systems can extract more information than local measurements, thereby enhancing information-processing efficiency. Although this nonclassical phenomenon has been known for two decades, it has remained a challenging task to demonstrate the advantage of collective measurements in experiments. Here we introduce a general recipe for performing deterministic collective measurements on two identically prepared qubits based on quantum walks. Using photonic quantum walks, we realize experimentally an optimized collective measurement with fidelity 0.9946 without post selection. As an application, we achieve the highest tomographic efficiency in qubit state tomography to date. Our work offers an effective recipe for beating the precision limit of local measurements in quantum state tomography and metrology. In addition, our study opens an avenue for harvesting the power of collective measurements in quantum information processing and for exploring the intriguing physics behind this power.

Local existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the free boundary problem of the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations in 3D

In this paper we establish the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the free boundary problem of the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations in three-dimensional space. The vanishing density and temperature condition is imposed on the free boundary, which captures the motions of the non-isentropic viscous gas surrounded by vacuum with bounded entropy. We also assume some proper decay rates of the density towards the boundary and singularities of derivatives of the temperature across the boundary on the initial data, which coincides with the physical vacuum condition for the isentropic flows. This extends the previous result of Liu [ArXiv:1612.07936] by removing the spherically symmetric assumption and considering more general initial density and temperature profiles.

Experimental demonstration of wave-particle duality relation based on coherence measure

Wave-particle duality is a typical example of Bohr's complementarity principle that plays a significant role in quantum mechanics. Previous studies used the visibility of an interference pattern to quantify the wave property and used path information to quantify the particle property. However, coherence is the core and basis of the interference phenomenon. If we could use coherence to characterize the wave property, the understanding of wave-particle duality would be strengthened. A recent theoretical work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 160406 (2016)] found two relations between quantum coherence and path information. Here, we demonstrate the new measure of wave-particle duality based on two kinds of coherence measures quantitatively for the first time. The wave property, quantified by the coherence in the l1-norm measure and the relative entropy measure, can be obtained via tomography of the target state, which is encoded in the path degree of freedom of the photons. The particle property, quantified by the path information, can be obtained via the discrimination of detector states, which is encoded in the polarization degree of freedom of the photons. Our work may deepen people's understanding of coherence and provide a new perspective regarding wave-particle duality.

ARJA: Automated Repair of Java Programs via Multi-Objective Genetic Programming

Recent empirical studies show that the performance of GenProg is not satisfactory, particularly for Java. In this paper, we propose ARJA, a new GP based repair approach for automated repair of Java programs. To be specific, we present a novel lower-granularity patch representation that properly decouples the search subspaces of likely-buggy locations, operation types and potential fix ingredients, enabling GP to explore the search space more effectively. Based on this new representation, we formulate automated program repair as a multi-objective search problem and use NSGA-II to look for simpler repairs. To reduce the computational effort and search space, we introduce a test filtering procedure that can speed up the fitness evaluation of GP and three types of rules that can be applied to avoid unnecessary manipulations of the code. Moreover, we also propose a type matching strategy that can create new potential fix ingredients by exploiting the syntactic patterns of the existing statements. We conduct a large-scale empirical evaluation of ARJA along with its variants on both seeded bugs and real-world bugs in comparison with several state-of-the-art repair approaches. Our results verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the search mechanisms employed in ARJA and also show its superiority over the other approaches. In particular, compared to jGenProg (an implementation of GenProg for Java), an ARJA version fully following the redundancy assumption can generate a test-suite adequate patch for more than twice the number of bugs (from 27 to 59), and a correct patch for nearly four times of the number (from 5 to 18), on 224 real-world bugs considered in Defects4J. Furthermore, ARJA is able to correctly fix several real multi-location bugs that are hard to be repaired by most of the existing repair approaches.

Online Red Packets: A Large-scale Empirical Study of Gift Giving on WeChat

Gift giving is a ubiquitous social phenomenon, and red packets have been used as monetary gifts in Asian countries for thousands of years. In recent years, online red packets have become widespread in China through the WeChat platform. Exploiting a unique dataset consisting of 61 million group red packets and seven million users, we conduct a large-scale, data-driven study to understand the spread of red packets and the effect of red packets on group activity. We find that the cash flows between provinces are largely consistent with provincial GDP rankings, e.g., red packets are sent from users in the south to those in the north. By distinguishing spontaneous from reciprocal red packets, we reveal the behavioral patterns in sending red packets: males, seniors, and people with more in-group friends are more inclined to spontaneously send red packets, while red packets from females, youths, and people with less in-group friends are more reciprocal. Furthermore, we use propensity score matching to study the external effects of red packets on group dynamics. We show that red packets increase group participation and strengthen in-group relationships, which partly explain the benefits and motivations for sending red packets.

Ptychography intensity interferometry imaging

Intensity interferometry (II) exploits the second-order correlation to acquire the spatial frequency information of an object, which has been used to observe distant stars since 1950s. However, due to unreliability of employed imaging reconstruction algorithms, II can only image simple and sparse objects such as double stars. We here develop a method that overcomes this unreliability problem and enables imaging complex objects by combing II and a ptychography iterative algorithm. Different from previous ptychography iterative-type algorithms that work only for diffractive objects using coherence light sources, our method obtains the objects spatial spectrum from the second-order correlation of intensity fluctuation by using an incoherent source, which therefore largely simplifies the imaging process. Furthermore, by introducing loose supports in the ptychography algorithm, a high-quality image can be recovered without knowing the precise size and position of the scanning illumination, which is a strong requirement for traditional ptychography iterative algorithm.

Temporal Dynamic Graph LSTM for Action-driven Video Object Detection

In this paper, we investigate a weakly-supervised object detection framework. Most existing frameworks focus on using static images to learn object detectors. However, these detectors often fail to generalize to videos because of the existing domain shift. Therefore, we investigate learning these detectors directly from boring videos of daily activities. Instead of using bounding boxes, we explore the use of action descriptions as supervision since they are relatively easy to gather. A common issue, however, is that objects of interest that are not involved in human actions are often absent in global action descriptions known as "missing label". To tackle this problem, we propose a novel temporal dynamic graph Long Short-Term Memory network (TD-Graph LSTM). TD-Graph LSTM enables global temporal reasoning by constructing a dynamic graph that is based on temporal correlations of object proposals and spans the entire video. The missing label issue for each individual frame can thus be significantly alleviated by transferring knowledge across correlated objects proposals in the whole video. Extensive evaluations on a large-scale daily-life action dataset (i.e., Charades) demonstrates the superiority of our proposed method. We also release object bounding-box annotations for more than 5,000 frames in Charades. We believe this annotated data can also benefit other research on video-based object recognition in the future.

Holomorphic isometries between products of complex unit balls

We first give an exposition on holomorphic isometries from the Poincaré disk to polydisks and from the Poincaré disk to the product of the Poincaré disk with a complex unit ball. As an application, we provide an example of proper holomorphic map from the unit disk to the complex unit ball that is irrational, algebraic and holomorphic on a neighborhood of the closed unit disk. We also include some new results on holomorphic isometries.

The relationship between tasks varies between different test problems, which would be helpful to have a comprehensive evaluation of the MO-MFO algorithms. It is expected that the proposed test problems will germinate progress the field of the MTMOO research.

Observation of topological states residing at step edges of WTe2

Topological states emerge at the boundary of solids as a consequence of the nontrivial topology of the bulk. Recently, theory predicts a topological edge state on single layer transition metal dichalcogenides with 1T' structure. However, its existence still lacks experimental proof. Here, we report the direct observations of the topological states at the step edge of WTe2 by spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy. A one-dimensional electronic state residing at the step edge of WTe2 is observed, which has a spatial extension of about 2.5 nm. First principles calculations rigorously verify the edge state has a topological origin, and its topological nature is unaffected by the presence of the substrate. Our study supports the existence of topological edge states in 1T'-WTe2, which may envision in-depth study of its topological physics and device applications.
