Nonlinear stability of self-gravitating massive fields. A wave-Klein-Gordon model

Significant advances were made in recent years on the global evolution problem for self-gravitating massive matter in the small-perturbative regime close to Minkowski spacetime. To study the coupling between a Klein-Gordon equation and Einstein's field equations, we introduced the ``Euclidean-hyperboloidal foliation method'', which is based on the construction of a spacetime foliation adapted to the derivation of sharp decay estimates for wave and Klein-Gordon equations in a curved spacetime. We give here an outline of this method, together with a full proof for a wave-Klein-Gordon model which retains some main challenges arising with the Einstein-matter system.

SimVTP: Simple Video Text Pre-training with Masked Autoencoders

This paper presents SimVTP: a Simple Video-Text Pretraining framework via masked autoencoders. We randomly mask out the spatial-temporal tubes of input video and the word tokens of input text and then feed them into a unified autencoder to reconstruct the missing pixels and words. Our SimVTP has several properties: 1) Thanks to the unified autoencoder, SimVTP reconstructs the masked signal of one modality with the help from another modality, which implicitly learns the cross-modal alignment between video tubes and text tokens. 2) SimVTP not only benefits from a high video masking ratio (e.g. 90%) due to the temporal redundancy of video, but also needs a high text masking ratio (e.g. 75%), which is much higher than BERT (e.g. 15%), to achieve optimal performance. This is because the aid of video modality makes text reconstruction less challenging, which thus needs a higher mask ratio to make the pretext harder for useful feature learning. 3) Equipping SimVTP with video-text contrastive learning (VTC) and video-text matching (VTM), which are two commonly used cross-modal training strategies, could further improve the transferable performance significantly. 4) SimVTP is dataefficent, e.g., pre-training only on 10% data of WebVid-2M, SimVTP achieves surprisingly good results (43.8 R@1) on MSRVTT, which is far above recent state-of-the-art methods pre-trained on both CC3M and WebVid-2M. We transfer our pre-trained model to various downstream tasks and achieve superior performance. The codes and models will be released at https://github.com/mayuelala/SimVTP.

The degree and codegree threshold for linear triangle covering in 3-graphs

Given two $k$-uniform hypergraphs $F$ and $G$, we say that $G$ has an $F$-covering if every vertex in $G$ is contained in a copy of $F$. For $1\le i \le k-1$, let $c_i(n,F)$ be the least integer such that every $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ with $δ_i(G)> c_i(n,F)$ has an $F$-covering. The covering problem has been systematically studied by Falgas-Ravry and Zhao [Codegree thresholds for covering 3-uniform hypergraphs, SIAM J. Discrete Math., 2016]. Last year, Falgas-Ravry, Markström, and Zhao [Triangle-degrees in graphs and tetrahedron coverings in 3-graphs, Combinatorics, Probability and Computing, 2021] asymptotically determined $c_1(n, F)$ when $F$ is the generalized triangle. In this note, we give the exact value of $c_2(n, F)$ and asymptotically determine $c_1(n, F)$ when $F$ is the linear triangle $C_6^3$, where $C_6^3$ is the 3-uniform hypergraph with vertex set $\{v_1,v_2,v_3,v_4,v_5,v_6\}$ and edge set $\{v_1v_2v_3,v_3v_4v_5,v_5v_6v_1\}$.

Enhanced nonlinear interferometry via seeding

We analyse a nonlinear interferometer, also known as an SU(1,1) interferometer, in the presence of internal losses and inefficient detectors. To overcome these limitations, we consider the effect of seeding one of the interferometer input modes with either a number state or a coherent state. We derive analytical expressions for the interference visibility, contrast, phase sensitivity, and signal-to-noise ratio, and show a significant enhancement in all these quantities as a function of the seeding photon number. For example, we predict that, even in the presence of substantial losses and highly inefficient detectors, we can achieve the same quantum-limited phase sensitivity of an unseeded nonlinear interferometer by seeding with a few tens of photons. Furthermore, we observe no difference between a number or a coherent seeding state when the interferometer operates in the low-gain regime, which enables seeding with an attenuated laser. Our results expand the nonlinear interferometry capabilities in the field of quantum imaging, metrology, and spectroscopy under realistic experimental conditions.

Einstein-Klein-Gordon spacetimes in the harmonic near-Minkowski regime

We study the initial value problem for the Einstein-Klein-Gordon system and establish the global nonlinear stability of massive matter in the near-Minkowski regime when the initial geometry is a perturbation of an asymptotically flat, spacelike hypersurface in Minkowski spacetime and the metric enjoys the harmonic decay 1/r (in term of a suitable distance function r at spatial infinity). Our analysis encompasses matter fields that have small energy norm and solely enjoys a slow decay at spacelike infinity. Our proof is based on the Euclidean-hyperboloidal foliation method recently introduced by the authors, and distinguishes between the decay along asymptotically hyperbolic slices and the decay along asymptotically Euclidean slices. We carefully analyze the decay of metric component at the harmonic level 1/r, especially the metric component in the direction of the light cone. In presence of such a slow-decaying matter field, we establish a global existence theory for the Einstein equations expressed as a coupled system of nonlinear wave and Klein-Gordon equations.

Toward Systematic Considerations of Missingness in Visual Analytics

Data-driven decision making has been a common task in today's big data era, from simple choices such as finding a fast way to drive home, to complex decisions on medical treatment. It is often supported by visual analytics. For various reasons (e.g., system failure, interrupted network, intentional information hiding, or bias), visual analytics for sensemaking of data involves missingness (e.g., data loss and incomplete analysis), which impacts human decisions. For example, missing data can cost a business millions of dollars, and failing to recognize key evidence can put an innocent person in jail. Being aware of missingness is critical to avoid such catastrophes. To fulfill this, as an initial step, we consider missingness in visual analytics from two aspects: data-centric and human-centric. The former emphasizes missingness in three data-related categories: data composition, data relationship, and data usage. The latter focuses on the human-perceived missingness at three levels: observed-level, inferred-level, and ignored-level. Based on them, we discuss possible roles of visualizations for handling missingness, and conclude our discussion with future research opportunities.

Unifying Sørensen-Mølmer gate and Milburn gate with an optomechanical example

Sørensen-Mølmer gate and Milburn gate are two geometric phase gates, generating nonlinear self-interaction of a target mode via its interaction with an auxiliary mechanical mode, in the continuous and pulsed interaction regime, respectively. In this paper, we aim at unifying the two gates by demonstrating that Sørensen-Mølmer gate is the continuous limit of Milburn gate, emphasising the geometrical interpretation in the mechanical phase space. We explicitly consider imperfect gate parameters, focusing on relative errors in time for Sørensen-Mølmer gate and in phase angle increment for Milburn gate. We find that, although the purities of the final states increase for the two gates upon reducing the interaction strength together with traversing the mechanical phase space multiple times, the fidelities behave differently. We point out that, the difference exists because the interaction strength depends on the relative error when taking the continuous limit from the pulsed regime, thereby unifying the mathematical framework of the two gates. We demonstrate this unification in the example of an optomechanical system, where mechanical dissipation is also considered. We highlight that, the unified framework facilitates the new method of deriving the dynamics of the continuous interaction regime without solving differential equations.

Global Behavior of Small Data Solutions for The 2D Dirac-Klein-Gordon Equations

In this paper, we are interested in the two-dimensional Dirac-Klein-Gordon system, which is a basic model in particle physics. We investigate the global behaviors of small data solutions to this system in the case of a massive scalar field and a massless Dirac field. More precisely, our main result is twofold: 1) we show sharp time decay for the pointwise estimates of the solutions which imply the asymptotic stability of this system; 2) we show the linear scattering result of this system which is a fundamental problem when it is viewed as dispersive equations. Our result is valid for general small, high-regular initial data, in particular, there is no restriction on the support of the initial data.

Nonlinear stability of the totally geodesic wave maps in non-isotropic manifolds

In this article we investigate a type of totally geodesic map which has its image being a geodesic in an anisotropic Riemannian manifold. We consider its nonlinear stability among the family of wave maps. We first establish the factorization property and then formulate the stability problem into a PDE system in a specially constructed chart of geodesic normal coordinates. With a generalization of the hyperboloidal foliation, we establish the global existence result associate to small initial data for this PDE system, which leads to the geometric stability.

A Meta Path Based Evaluation Method for Enterprise Credit Risk

Nowadays small and medium-sized enterprises have become an essential part of the national economy. With the increasing number of such enterprises, how to evaluate their credit risk becomes a hot issue. Unlike big enterprises with massive data to analyze, it is hard to find enough information of small enterprises to assess their financial status. Limited by the lack of primary data, how to inference small enterprises' credit risk from secondary data, like information of their upstream, downstream, parent, and subsidiary enterprises attracts big attention from industry and academy. Targeting on accurately evaluating the credit risk of the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME), in this paper, we exploit the representative power of Information Network on various kinds of SME entities and SME relationships to solve the problem. A novel feature named meta path feature proposed to measure the credit risk, which makes us able to evaluate the financial status of SMEs from various perspectives. Experiments show that our method is effective to identify SMEs with credit risks.

Simulating Authenticated Broadcast in Networks of Bounded Degree

The authenticated broadcast is simulated in the bounded-degree networks to provide efficient broadcast primitives for building efficient higher-layer Byzantine protocols. A general abstraction of the relay-based broadcast system is introduced, in which the properties of the relay-based broadcast primitives are generalized. With this, fault-tolerant propagation is proposed as a building block of the broadcast primitives. Meanwhile, complementary systems are proposed in complementing fault-tolerant propagation and localized communication. Analysis shows that efficient fault-tolerant propagation can be built with sufficient initiation areas. Meanwhile, by integrating fault-tolerant propagation and localized communication, efficient broadcast primitives can be built in bounded-degree networks.

Compact polarized X-ray source based on all-optical inverse Compton scattering

Polarized X-ray source is an important probe for many fields such as fluorescence imaging, magnetic microscopy, and nuclear physics research. All-optical inverse Compton scattering source (AOCS) based on laser wakefield accelerator (LWFA) has drawn great attention in recent years due to its compact scale and high performance, especially its potential to generate polarized X-rays. Here, polarization-tunable X-rays are generated by a plasma-mirror-based AOCS scheme. The linearly and circularly polarized AOCS pulses are achieved with the mean photon energy of 60($\pm$5)/64($\pm$3) keV and the single-shot photon yield of $\sim$1.1/1.3$\times10^7$. A Compton polarimeter is designed to diagnose the photon polarization states, demonstrating AOCS's polarization-tunable property, and indicating the average polarization degree of the linearly polarized AOCS is 75($\pm$3)%.

Asymptotic behavior of 2D Wave-Klein-Gordon coupled system under null condition

We study the 2D coupled wave-Klein-Gordon systems with semi-linear null nonlinearities $Q_0$ and $Q_{αβ}$. The main result states that the solution to the 2D coupled systems exists globally provided that the initial data are small in some weighted Sobolev space, which do not necessarily have compact support, and we also show the optimal time decay of the solution. The major difficulties lie in the slow decay nature of the wave and the Klein-Gordon components in two space dimensions, in addition, extra difficulties arise due to the presence of the null form $Q_0$ which is not of divergence form and is not compatible with the Klein-Gordon equations. To overcome the difficulties, a new observation for the structure of the null form $Q_0$ is required.

Limits on inference of gravitational entanglement

Combining gravity with quantum mechanics remains one of the biggest challenges of physics. In the past years, experiments with opto-mechanical systems have been proposed that may give indirect clues about the quantum nature of gravity. In a recent variation of such tests [D. Carney et al., Phys.Rev.X Quantum 2, 030330 (2021)], the authors propose to gravitationally entangle an atom interferometer with a mesoscopic oscillator. The interaction results in periodic drops and revivals of the interferometeric visibility, which under specific assumptions indicate the gravitational generation of entanglement. Here we study semi-classical models of the atom interferometer that can reproduce the same effect. We show that the core signature -- periodic collapses and revivals of the visibility -- can appear if the atom is subject to a random unitary channel, including the case where the oscillator is fully classical and situations even without explicit modelling of the oscillator. We also show that the non-classicality of the oscillator vanishes unless the system is very close to its ground state, and even when the system is in the ground state, the non-classicality is limited by the coupling strength. Our results thus indicate that deducing entanglement from the proposed experiment is very challenging, since fulfilling and verifying the non-classicality assumptions is a significant challenge on its own right.

Millicharged particles at electron colliders

We propose to search for millicharged particles in electron colliders operated with the center-of-mass energies at ${\cal O}$(1-10) GeV, which include Belle II, BESIII, BaBar, and also the proposed experiment STCF. We use the monophoton final state at electron colliders to probe the parameter space of millicharged particles, that is spanned by millicharge $ε$ and mass $m$. We find that electron colliders have sensitivity to the previously unexplored parameter space for millicharged particles with MeV-GeV mass: $ε\lesssim {\cal O}(10^{-1})$ for $0.5$ GeV $\lesssim m \lesssim 3.5$ GeV in BaBar, $ε\lesssim {\cal O}(10^{-3})$ for $0.1$ GeV $\lesssim m \lesssim 1.5$ GeV in BESIII, $ε\lesssim 10^{-3}-10^{-2}$ for $0.1$ GeV $\lesssim m \lesssim 4$ GeV in Belle II, and $ε\lesssim {\cal O}(10^{-4})$ for $1$ MeV $\lesssim m \lesssim 1$ GeV in STCF.

Global Existence and Scattering of the Klein-Gordon-Zakharov System in Two Space Dimensions

We are interested in the Klein-Gordon-Zakharov system in $\mathbb{R}^{1+2}$, which is an important model in plasma physics with extensive mathematical studies. The system can be regarded as semilinear coupled wave and Klein-Gordon equations with nonlinearities violating the null conditions. Without the compactness assumptions on the initial data, we aim to establish the existence of small global solutions, and in addition, we want to illustrate the optimal pointwise decay of the solutions. Furthermore, we show that the Klein-Gordon part of the system enjoys linear scattering while the wave part has uniformly bounded low-order energy. None of these goals is easy because of the slow pointwise decay nature of the linear wave and Klein-Gordon components in $\mathbb{R}^{1+2}$. We tackle the difficulties by carefully exploiting the properties of the wave and the Klein-Gordon components, and by relying on the ghost weight energy estimates to close higher-order energy estimates. This appears to be the first pointwise decay result and the first scattering result for the Klein-Gordon-Zakharov system in $\mathbb{R}^{1+2}$ without compactness assumptions.

Torque-free manipulation of nanoparticle rotations via embedded spins

Spin angular momentum and mechanical rotation both contribute to the total angular momentum of rigid bodies, leading to spin-rotational coupling via the Einstein-de Haas and Barnett effects. Here we show that the revolutions of symmetric nanorotors can be strongly affected by a small number of intrinsic spins. The resulting dynamics are observable with freely rotating nanodiamonds with embedded nitrogen-vacancy centers and persist for realistically-shaped near-symmetric particles, opening the door to torque-free schemes to control their rotations at the quantum level.

Union and Intersection of all Justifications

We present new algorithm for computing the union and intersection of all justifications for a given ontological consequence without first computing the set of all justifications. Through an empirical evaluation, we show that our approach works well in practice for expressive DLs. In particular, the union of all justifications can be computed much faster than with existing justification-enumeration approaches. We further discuss how to use these results to repair ontologies efficiently.
