Reference Map Technique for Incompressible Fluid-Structure Interaction

We present a general simulation approach for fluid-solid interactions based on the fully-Eulerian Reference Map Technique (RMT). The approach permits the modeling of one or more finitely-deformable continuum solid bodies interacting with a fluid and with each other. A key advantage of this approach is its ease of use, as the solid and fluid are discretized on the same fixed grid, which greatly simplifies the coupling between the phases. We use the method to study a number of illustrative examples involving an incompressible Navier-Stokes fluid interacting with multiple neo-Hookean solids. Our method has several useful features including the ability to model solids with sharp corners and the ability to model actuated solids. The latter permits the simulation of active media such as swimmers, which we demonstrate. The method is validated favorably in the flag-flapping geometry, for which a number of experimental, numerical, and analytical studies have been performed. We extend the flapping analysis beyond the thin-flag limit, revealing an additional destabilization mechanism to induce flapping.

Residual spin susceptibility in the spin-triplet, orbital-singlet model

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Knight shift measurements are critical tools in the identification of spin-triplet superconductors. We discuss the effects of spin orbit coupling on the Knight shift and susceptibilities for a variety of spin triplet multi-orbital gap functions with orbital-singlet character and compare their responses to "traditional" single band spin-triplet ($p_x+ip_y$) superconductors. We observe a non-negligible residual spin-susceptibility at low temperature.

Extended Coulomb liquid of paired hardcore boson model on a pyrochlore lattice

There is a growing interest in the $U(1)$ Coulomb liquid in both quantum materials in pyrochlore ice and cluster Mott insulators and cold atom systems. We explore a paired hardcore boson model on a pyrochlore lattice. This model is equivalent to the XYZ spin model that was proposed for rare-earth pyrochlores with "dipole-octupole" doublets. Since this model has no sign problem for quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations in a large parameter regime, we carry out both analytical and QMC calculations. We find that the $U(1)$ Coulomb liquid is quite stable and spans a rather large portion of the phase diagram with boson pairing. Moreover, we numerically find thermodynamic evidence that the boson pairing could induce a possible $\mathbb{Z}_2$ liquid in the vicinity of the phase boundary between Coulomb liquid and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry-broken phase. Besides the materials' relevance with quantum spin ice, we point to quantum simulation with cold atoms on optical lattices.

Bregman Parallel Direction Method of Multipliers for Distributed Optimization via Mirror Averaging

Distributed optimization aims to optimize a global objective formed by a sum of coupled local convex functions over a graph via only local computation and communication. In this paper, we propose the Bregman parallel direction method of multipliers (PDMM) based on a generalized averaging step named mirror averaging. We establish the global convergence and $O(1/T)$ convergence rate of the Bregman PDMM, along with its $O(n/\ln n)$ improvement over existing PDMM, where $T$ denotes the number of iterations and $n$ the dimension of solution variable. In addition, we can enhance its performance by optimizing the spectral gap of the averaging matrix. We demonstrate our results via a numerical example.

Aurora: Providing Trusted System Services for Enclaves On an Untrusted System

Intel SGX provisions shielded executions for security-sensitive computation, but lacks support for trusted system services (TSS), such as clock, network and filesystem. This makes \textit{enclaves} vulnerable to Iago attacks~\cite{DBLP:conf/asplos/CheckowayS13} in the face of a powerful malicious system. To mitigate this problem, we present Aurora, a novel architecture that provides TSSes via a secure channel between enclaves and devices on top of an untrusted system, and implement two types of TSSes, i.e. clock and end-to-end network. We evaluate our solution by porting SQLite and OpenSSL into Aurora, experimental results show that SQLite benefits from a \textit{microsecond} accuracy trusted clock and OpenSSL gains end-to-end secure network with about 1ms overhead.

Optimal Cooperative Inference

Cooperative transmission of data fosters rapid accumulation of knowledge by efficiently combining experiences across learners. Although well studied in human learning and increasingly in machine learning, we lack formal frameworks through which we may reason about the benefits and limitations of cooperative inference. We present such a framework. We introduce novel indices for measuring the effectiveness of probabilistic and cooperative information transmission. We relate our indices to the well-known Teaching Dimension in deterministic settings. We prove conditions under which optimal cooperative inference can be achieved, including a representation theorem that constrains the form of inductive biases for learners optimized for cooperative inference. We conclude by demonstrating how these principles may inform the design of machine learning algorithms and discuss implications for human and machine learning.

An asymptotically compatible meshfree quadrature rule for non-local problems with applications to peridynamics

We present a meshfree quadrature rule for compactly supported non-local integro-differential equations (IDEs) with radial kernels. We apply this rule to develop a strong-form meshfree discretization of a peridynamic solid mechanics model that requires no background mesh. Existing discretizations of peridynamic models have been shown to exhibit a lack of asymptotic compatibility to the corresponding linearly elastic local solution. By posing the quadrature rule as an equality constrained least squares problem, we obtain asymptotically compatible convergence via reproducability constraints. Our approach naturally handles traction-free conditions, surface effects, and damage modeling for both static and dynamic problems. We demonstrate high-order convergence to the local theory by comparing to manufactured solutions and to cases with crack singularities for which an analytic solution is available. Finally, we verify the applicability of the approach to realistic problems by reproducing high-velocity impact results from the Kalthoff-Winkler experiments.

Majorana fermions in three dimensions and realization in critical Weyl semimetals

We present two band models for free fermion with charge conjugation symmetry in three dimensions. Without time reversal symmetry (TRS), the weak pairing gapless $A$-phase is a Majorana fermion $p_x+ip_y$ wave FFLO state while the strong pairing gapped $B$-phase belongs to topologically trivial Class $D$. With TRS, there is a Majorana fermion $B$-phase belonging to Class $DIII$ with a non-zero Hopf invariant. The TRS $A$-phase is also a Majorana fermion FFLO state with TRS. The surface states of the TRS $B$-phase are either a valley-momentum locked Majorana-Dirac cone or a linear-quadratic mixed cone for a specific surface. The surface states of the $A$-phase on one surface are topologically nontrivial, either having $\mathbb{Z}$ or $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant depending on whether the system is TRS or not. The edge states of that surface are gapless Majorana modes. The Majorana fermion gapless FFLO states can be realized in critical Weyl semimetals (WSM) in which dual single Weyl nodes form dipoles and are nearly annihilated. The gapped $B$-phase emerges when Weyl node dipoles are about to be created. The WSM TaAs-family, a type-II WSM series Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$-family, possible WSM La/LuBi$_{1-x}$ Sb$_x$Te$_3$ and topological crystalline insulators Sn$_{1-x}$Pb$_x$(Te,Se) are candidates to be manipulated into these critical states based on Majorana fermion models.

Realization of Massive Relativistic Spin-3/2 Rarita-Schwinger Quasiparticle in Condensed Matter Systems

The spin-3/2 elementary particle, known as Rarita-Schwinger (RS) fermion, is described by a vector-spinor field ψ_{μα}, whose number of components is larger than its independent degrees of freedom (DOF). Thus the RS equations contain nontrivial constraints to eliminate the redundant DOF. Consequently the standard procedure adopted in realizing relativistic spin-1/2 quasi-particle is not capable of creating the RS fermion in condensed matter systems. In this work, we propose a generic method to construct a Hamiltonian which implicitly contains the RS constraints, thus includes the eigenstates and energy dispersions being exactly the same as those of RS equations. By implementing our 16X16 or 6X6 Hamiltonian, one can realize the 3 dimensional or 2 dimensional (2D) massive RS quasiparticles, respectively. In the non-relativistic limit, the 2D 6X6 Hamiltonian can be reduced to two 3X3 Hamiltonians which describe the positive and negative energy parts respectively. Due to the nontrivial constraints, this simplified 2D massive RS quasiparticle has an exotic property: it has vanishing orbital magnetic moment while its orbital magnetization is finite. Finally, we discuss the material realization of RS quasiparticle. Our study provides an opportunity to realize higher spin elementary fermions with constraints in condensed matter systems.

Fast Stochastic Variance Reduced ADMM for Stochastic Composition Optimization

We consider the stochastic composition optimization problem proposed in \cite{wang2017stochastic}, which has applications ranging from estimation to statistical and machine learning. We propose the first ADMM-based algorithm named com-SVR-ADMM, and show that com-SVR-ADMM converges linearly for strongly convex and Lipschitz smooth objectives, and has a convergence rate of $O( \log S/S)$, which improves upon the $O(S^{-4/9})$ rate in \cite{wang2016accelerating} when the objective is convex and Lipschitz smooth. Moreover, com-SVR-ADMM possesses a rate of $O(1/\sqrt{S})$ when the objective is convex but without Lipschitz smoothness. We also conduct experiments and show that it outperforms existing algorithms.

Kitaev materials beyond iridates: order by quantum disorder and Weyl magnons in rare-earth double perovskites

Motivated by the experiments on the rare-earth double perovskites, we propose a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg model to describe the generic interaction between the spin-orbit-entangled Kramers' doublets of the rare-earth moments. We carry out a systematic analysis of the mean-field phase diagram of this new model. In the phase diagram, there exist large regions with a continuous U(1) or O(3) degeneracy. Since no symmetry of the model protects such a continuous degeneracy, we predict that the quantum fluctuation lifts the continuous degeneracy and favors various magnetic orders in the phase diagram. From this order by quantum disorder mechanism, we further predict that the magnetic excitations of the resulting ordered phases are characterized by nearly gapless pseudo-Goldstone modes. We find that there exist Weyl magnon excitations for certain magnetic orders. We expect our prediction to inspire further study of Kitaev physics, the order by quantum disorder phenomenon and topological spin wave modes in the rare-earth magnets and the systems alike.

Bulk-edge correspondence, spectral flow and Atiyah-Patodi-Singer theorem for the Z2-invariant in topological insulators

We study the bulk-edge correspondence in topological insulators by taking Fu-Kane spin pumping model as an example. We show that the Kane-Mele invariant in this model is Z2 invariant modulo the spectral flow of a single-parameter family of 1+1-dimensional Dirac operators with a global boundary condition induced by the Kramers degeneracy of the system. This spectral flow is defined as an integer which counts the difference between the number of eigenvalues of the Dirac operator family that flow from negative to non-negative and the number of eigenvalues that flow from non-negative to negative. Since the bulk states of the insulator are completely gapped and the ground state is assumed being no more degenerate except the Kramers, they do not contribute to the spectral flow and only edge states contribute to. The parity of the number of the Kramers pairs of gapless edge states is exactly the same as that of the spectral flow. This reveals the origin of the edge-bulk correspondence, i.e., why the edge states can be used to characterize the topological insulators. Furthermore, the spectral flow is related to the reduced eta-invariant and thus counts both the discrete ground state degeneracy and the continuous gapless excitations, which distinguishes the topological insulator from the conventional band insulator even if the edge states open a gap due to a strong interaction between edge modes. We emphasize that these results are also valid even for a weak disordered and/or weak interacting system. The higher spectral flow to categorize the higher-dimensional topological insulators are expected.

Nonperturbative emergence of Dirac fermion in strongly correlated composite fermions of fractional quantum Hall effects

The classic composite fermion field theory (Ref. 1) builds up an excellent framework to uniformly study important physical objects and globally explain anomalous experimental phenomena in fractional quantum Hall physics while there are also inherent weaknesses. We present a nonperturbative emergent Dirac fermion theory from this strongly correlated composite fermion field theory, which overcomes these serious long-standing shortcomings. The particle-hole symmetry of Dirac equation resolves this particle-hole symmetry enigma in the composite fermion field theory. With the help of presented numerical data, we show that for main Jain's sequences of fractional quantum Hall effects, this emergent Dirac fermion theory is most likely nonperturbatively stable.

Gauge fermions with flat bands and anomalous transport via chiral modes from breaking gauge symmetry

The dispersionless longitudinal photon in Maxwell theory is thought of as a redundant degree of freedom due to the gauge symmetry. We find that when there exist exactly flat bands with zero energy in a condensed matter system, the fermion field may locally transform as a gauge field and the system possesses a gauge symmetry. As the longitudinal photon, the redundant degrees of freedom from the flat bands must be gauged away from the physical states. As an example, we study spinless fermions on a generalized Lieb lattice in three dimensions. The flat band of the longitudinal fermion induces a gauge symmetry. An external magnetic field breaks this gauge symmetry and emerges a bunch of non-topologically chiral modes. Combining these emergent chiral modes with the chiral anomaly mode which is of an opposite chirality, rich anomalous electric transport phenomena exhibit and are expected to be observed in Pd$_3$Bi$_2$S$_2$ and Ag$_3$Se$_2$Au.

Field Induced Oscillation of Two Majorana Modes for a finite Quantum Wire

The evolution of quantum walk on a finite wire under a small increment of vector potential $α$ can exhibit intrinsic quantum oscillation of the two topologically protected bound states corresponding to the Majorana modes. By tuning an external electric field corresponding to the addition of an $α$ impulse at the end of each intrinsic period, the intrinsic oscillation is enveloped by a beat modulation with a longer period. This beat oscillation is useful in the preparation of decoherence-free qubit in trapped ion chain and may be observed in several experiments.

Nonlinear Quantum Hall effects in Rarita-Schwinger gas

Emergence of higher spin relativistic fermionic materials becomes a new favorite in the study of condensed matter physics. Massive Rarita-Schwinger 3/2-spinor was known owning very exotic properties, such as the superluminal fermionic modes and even being unstable in an external magnetic field. Due to the superluminal modes and the non-trivial constraints on the Rarita-Schwinger gas, we exposit anomalous properties of the Hall effects in (2+1)-dimensions which subvert the well-known quantum Hall paradigms. First, the Hall conductance of a pure Rarita-Schwinger gas is step-like but not plateau-quantized, instead of the linear dependence on the filling factor for a pure spin-1/2 Dirac gas. In reality, the Hall conductance of the Dirac gas is of quantized integer plateaus with the unit $\frac{e^2}h$ due to the localization away from the Landau level centers. If the general localization rule is applicable to the disordered Rarita-Schwinger gas, the Hall plateaus are also expected to appear but they are nonlinearly dependent on the Landau level index. Furthermore, there is a critical magnetic field beyond which higher Landau levels become unstable. This confines the filling factor of the system. We also show that the non-hermitness of the effective Hamiltonian is not crucial to the nonlinearity of the quantum Hall conductance.

Quantum spin ice on the breathing pyrochlore lattice

The Coulombic quantum spin liquid in quantum spin ice is an exotic quantum phase of matter that emerges on the pyrochlore lattice and is currently actively searched for. Motivated by recent experiments on the Yb-based breathing pyrochlore material Ba$_3$Yb$_2$Zn$_5$O$_{11}$, we theoretically study the phase diagram and magnetic properties of the relevant spin model. The latter takes the form of a quantum spin ice Hamiltonian on a breathing pyrochlore lattice, and we analyze the stability of the quantum spin liquid phase in the absence of the inversion symmetry which the lattice breaks explicitly at lattice sites. Using a gauge mean-field approach, we show that the quantum spin liquid occupies a finite region in parameter space. Moreover, there exists a direct quantum phase transition between the quantum spin liquid phase and featureless paramagnets, even though none of theses phases break any symmetry. At nonzero temperature, we show that breathing pyrochlores provide a much broader finite temperature spin liquid regime than their regular counterparts. We discuss the implications of the results for current experiments and make predictions for future experiments on breathing pyrochlores.

Weyl magnons in breathing pyrochlore antiferromagnets

Frustrated quantum magnets not only provide exotic ground states and unusual magnetic structures, but also support unconventional excitations in many cases. Using a physically relevant spin model for a breathing pyrochlore lattice, we discuss the presence of topological linear band crossings of magnons in antiferromagnets. These are the analogs of Weyl fermions in electronic systems, which we dub Weyl magnons. The bulk Weyl magnon implies the presence of chiral magnon surface states forming arcs at finite energy. We argue that such antiferromagnets present a unique example in which Weyl points can be manipulated in situ in the laboratory by applied fields. We discuss their appearance specifically in the breathing pyrochlore lattice, and give some general discussion of conditions to find Weyl magnons and how they may be probed experimentally. Our work may inspire a re-examination of the magnetic excitations in many magnetically ordered systems.
