Task Driven Generative Modeling for Unsupervised Domain Adaptation: Application to X-ray Image Segmentation

Automatic parsing of anatomical objects in X-ray images is critical to many clinical applications in particular towards image-guided invention and workflow automation. Existing deep network models require a large amount of labeled data. However, obtaining accurate pixel-wise labeling in X-ray images relies heavily on skilled clinicians due to the large overlaps of anatomy and the complex texture patterns. On the other hand, organs in 3D CT scans preserve clearer structures as well as sharper boundaries and thus can be easily delineated. In this paper, we propose a novel model framework for learning automatic X-ray image parsing from labeled CT scans. Specifically, a Dense Image-to-Image network (DI2I) for multi-organ segmentation is first trained on X-ray like Digitally Reconstructed Radiographs (DRRs) rendered from 3D CT volumes. Then we introduce a Task Driven Generative Adversarial Network (TD-GAN) architecture to achieve simultaneous style transfer and parsing for unseen real X-ray images. TD-GAN consists of a modified cycle-GAN substructure for pixel-to-pixel translation between DRRs and X-ray images and an added module leveraging the pre-trained DI2I to enforce segmentation consistency. The TD-GAN framework is general and can be easily adapted to other learning tasks. In the numerical experiments, we validate the proposed model on 815 DRRs and 153 topograms. While the vanilla DI2I without any adaptation fails completely on segmenting the topograms, the proposed model does not require any topogram labels and is able to provide a promising average dice of 85% which achieves the same level accuracy of supervised training (88%).

YEDDA: A Lightweight Collaborative Text Span Annotation Tool

In this paper, we introduce \textsc{Yedda}, a lightweight but efficient and comprehensive open-source tool for text span annotation. \textsc{Yedda} provides a systematic solution for text span annotation, ranging from collaborative user annotation to administrator evaluation and analysis. It overcomes the low efficiency of traditional text annotation tools by annotating entities through both command line and shortcut keys, which are configurable with custom labels. \textsc{Yedda} also gives intelligent recommendations by learning the up-to-date annotated text. An administrator client is developed to evaluate annotation quality of multiple annotators and generate detailed comparison report for each annotator pair. Experiments show that the proposed system can reduce the annotation time by half compared with existing annotation tools. And the annotation time can be further compressed by 16.47\% through intelligent recommendation.

Discovery of a new nontoxic cuprate superconducting system Ga-Ba-Ca-Cu-O

Superconductivity is observed in a new nontoxic cuprate system Ga-Ba-Ca-Cu-O, with Tc = 82K for GaBa2Ca5Cu6O14+δ (Ga-1256) and Tc = 116K probably for GaBa2Ca3Cu4O10+δ (Ga-1234) or GaBa2Ca2Cu3O8+δ (Ga-1223), respectively. All compounds are fabricated by solid state reaction method under high pressure and high temperature. Samples are characterized by resistivity, magnetization and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The temperature dependence of magnetization measured in both zero-field-cooled and field-cooled processes on one sample (S1) shows two superconducting transitions at about 82K and 113K. The estimated shielding fraction for the phase with Tc of 82K is about 67%, while the fraction for another phase with Tc of 113K is quite small. The XRD Rietveld refinement for S1 indicates two main phases existing in the sample, Ga-1256 with fraction of about 58% and non-superconducting Ca0.85CuO2 with fraction of about 42%, respectively. Thus, we can conclude the superconducting phase with transition temperature of 82K is due to Ga-1256. The resistivity measurement also confirms the superconductivity for S1, and the resistivity reaches zero at about 82K. The temperature dependence of magnetization for another sample (S2) shows much higher superconducting shielding fraction for the phase with Tc of 116K, which may be a promising prospective for the synthesis of Ga-1234 or Ga-1223 phase.

Unprecedented High Irreversibility Line in Nontoxic Cuprate Superconductor (Cu,C)Ba2Ca3Cu4O11+delta

One of the key factors limiting the high power applications for a type-II superconductor is the irreversibility line Hirr(T) which reflects the very boundary of resistive dissipation in the phase diagram of magnetic field versus temperature. In cuprate family, the Y-, Bi-, Hg- and Tl-based systems have superconducting transition temperatures exceeding the liquid nitrogen boiling temperature (~77K). However, the toxic elements Hg and Tl in the latter two systems strongly constrain the possible applications. The Bi-based (2223) system is nontoxic, but the irreversibility magnetic field is strongly suppressed in the liquid nitrogen temperature region. For this purpose, the best perspective so far is relying on the YBa2Cu3O7 (Tc~90 K) system which is nontoxic and has a relatively high irreversibility magnetic field. Here we report the study of a nontoxic superconductor (Cu,C)Ba2Ca3Cu4O11+δ with Tc = 116K. It is found that the irreversibility magnetic field is unprecedentedly high among all superconductors and it thus provides a great potential of applications in the liquid nitrogen temperature region.

Fast Radio Bursts from the collapse of Strange Star Crusts

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are transient radio sources at cosmological distances. No counterparts in other bands have been observed for { non-repeating FRBs}. Here we suggest the collapse of strange star crusts as a possible origin for FRBs. Strange stars, which are composed of almost equal numbers of u, d, and s quarks, may be encapsulated by a thin crust of normal hadronic matter. When a strange star accretes matter from its environment, the crust becomes heavier and heavier. It may finally collapse, leading to the release of a large amount of magnetic energy and plenty of electron/positron pairs on a very short timescale. Electron/positron pairs in the polar cap region of the strange star can be accelerated to relativistic velocities, streaming along the magnetic field lines to form a thin shell. FRBs are produced by coherent emission from these electrons when the shell is expanding. Basic characteristics of observed FRBs can be explained in our model.

Sentence-State LSTM for Text Representation

Bi-directional LSTMs are a powerful tool for text representation. On the other hand, they have been shown to suffer various limitations due to their sequential nature. We investigate an alternative LSTM structure for encoding text, which consists of a parallel state for each word. Recurrent steps are used to perform local and global information exchange between words simultaneously, rather than incremental reading of a sequence of words. Results on various classification and sequence labelling benchmarks show that the proposed model has strong representation power, giving highly competitive performances compared to stacked BiLSTM models with similar parameter numbers.

A Rank-Based Similarity Metric for Word Embeddings

Word Embeddings have recently imposed themselves as a standard for representing word meaning in NLP. Semantic similarity between word pairs has become the most common evaluation benchmark for these representations, with vector cosine being typically used as the only similarity metric. In this paper, we report experiments with a rank-based metric for WE, which performs comparably to vector cosine in similarity estimation and outperforms it in the recently-introduced and challenging task of outlier detection, thus suggesting that rank-based measures can improve clustering quality.

Domain Wall Motion Driven by Laplace Pressure in CoFeB-MgO Nanodots with Perpendicular Anisotropy

We have studied the magnetization reversal of CoFeB-MgO nanodots with perpendicular anisotropy for size ranging from w=400 nm to 1 μm. Contrary to previous experiments, the switching field distribution is shifted toward lower magnetic fields as the size of the elements is reduced with a mean switching field varying as 1/w. We show that this mechanism can be explained by the nucleation of a pinned magnetic domain wall (DW) at the edges of the nanodots where damages are introduced by the patterning process. As the surface tension (Laplace pressure) applied on the DW increases when reducing the size of the nanodots, we demonstrate that the depinning field to reverse the entire elements varies as 1/w. These results suggest that the presence of DWs has to be considered in the switching process of nanoscale elements and open a path toward scalable spintronic devices.

Learning How to Self-Learn: Enhancing Self-Training Using Neural Reinforcement Learning

Self-training is a useful strategy for semi-supervised learning, leveraging raw texts for enhancing model performances. Traditional self-training methods depend on heuristics such as model confidence for instance selection, the manual adjustment of which can be expensive. To address these challenges, we propose a deep reinforcement learning method to learn the self-training strategy automatically. Based on neural network representation of sentences, our model automatically learns an optimal policy for instance selection. Experimental results show that our approach outperforms the baseline solutions in terms of better tagging performances and stability.

Experimental investigation of coaxial-gun-formed plasmas injected into a background transverse magnetic field or plasma

Injection of coaxial-gun-formed magnetized plasmas into a background transverse vacuum magnetic field or into a background magnetized plasma has been studied in the helicon-cathode (HelCat) linear plasma device at the University of New Mexico [M. Gilmore et al., J. Plasma Phys.81, 345810104 (2015)]. Magnetized plasma jet launched into a background transverse magnetic field shows emergent kink stabilization of the jet due to the formation of a sheared flow in the jet above the kink-stabilization threshold $0.1kV_A$ [Y. Zhang et al., Phys. Plasmas 24, 110702 (2017)]. Injection of a spheromak-like plasma into a transverse background magnetic field led to the observation of finger-like structures on the side with a stronger magnetic field null between the spheromak and background field. The finger-like structures are consistent with magneto-Rayleigh-Taylor instability. Jets or spheromaks launched into a background, low-$β$ magnetized plasma show similar behavior as above, respectively, in both cases.

The Penetration Effect of Connected Automated Vehicles in Urban Traffic: An Energy Impact Study

Earlier work has established a decentralized framework of optimally controlling connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) crossing an urban intersection without using explicit traffic signaling. The proposed solution is capable of minimizing energy consumption subject to a throughput maximization requirement. In this paper, we address the problem of optimally controlling CAVs under mixed traffic conditions where both CAVs and human-driven vehicles (non-CAVs) travel on the roads, so as to minimize energy consumption while guaranteeing safety constraints. The impact of CAVs on overall energy consumption is also investigated under different traffic scenarios. The benefit from CAV penetration (i.e., the fraction of CAVs relative to all vehicles) is validated through simulation in MATLAB and VISSIM. The results indicate that the energy efficiency improvement becomes more significant as the CAV penetration rate increases, while the significance diminishes as the traffic becomes heavier

Skyrmions in magnetic tunnel junctions

In this work, we demonstrate that skyrmions can be nucleated in the free layer of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) by a spin-polarized current with the assistance of stray fields from the pinned layer. The size, stability and number of created skyrmions can be tuned by either the DMI strength or the stray field distribution. The interaction between the stray field and the DMI effective field is discussed. A device with multi-level tunneling magnetoresistance is proposed, which could pave the ways for skyrmion-MTJ-based multi-bit storage and artificial neural network computation. Our results may facilitate the efficient nucleation and electrical detection of skyrmions.

Ultra-Fast Ferrimagnetic All Spin Logic Device

All spin logic device (ASLD) blazes an alternative path for realizing ultra-low power computing in the Post-Moore era. However, initial device structure relying on ferromagnetic input/output and spin transfer torque (STT) driven magnetization switching degrades its performance and even hinders its realization. In this paper, we propose an ASLD based on rare-earth (RE)-transition-metal (TM) ferromagnetic alloy that can achieve an ultra-high frequency up to terahertz. The spin orbit torque (SOT) induced fast precession near the spin angular momentum compensated point is investigated through the macrospin model. Combining the non-local spin current diffusing from the input to the output, a deterministic picosecond switching can be realized without any external magnetic field. Our results show that ASLD has the potential to exceed the performance of mainstream computing.

Lepton Flavorful Fifth Force and Depth-dependent Neutrino Matter Interactions

We consider a fifth force to be an interaction that couples to matter with a strength that grows with the number of atoms. In addition to competing with the strength of gravity a fifth force can give rise to violations of the equivalence principle. Current long range constraints on the strength and range of fifth forces are very impressive. Amongst possible fifth forces are those that couple to lepton flavorful charges $L_e-L_μ$ or $L_e-L_τ$. They have the property that their range and strength are also constrained by neutrino interactions with matter. In this brief note we review the existing constraints on the allowed parameter space in gauged $U(1)_{L_e-L_μ, L_τ}$. We find two regions where neutrino oscillation experiments are at the frontier of probing such a new force. In particular, there is an allowed range of parameter space where neutrino matter interactions relevant for long baseline oscillation experiments depend on the depth of the neutrino beam below the surface of the earth.

Supermassive Black Holes with High Accretion Rates in Active Galactic Nuclei. IX 10 New Observations of Reverberation Mapping and Shortened H$β$ Lags

As one of the series of papers reporting on a large reverberation mapping campaign of super-Eddington accreting massive black holes (SEAMBHs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we present the results of 10 SEAMBHs monitored spectroscopically during 2015-2017. Six of them are observed for the first time, and have generally higher 5100 Å luminosities than the SEAMBHs monitored in our campaign from 2012 to 2015; the remaining four are repeat observations to check if their previous lags change. Similar to the previous SEAMBHs, the H$β$ time lags of the newly observed objects are shorter than the values predicted by the canonical $R_{\mathrm{Hβ}}$-$L_{5100}$ relation of sub-Eddington AGNs, by factors of $\sim2-6$, depending on the accretion rate. The four previously observed objects have lags consistent with previous measurements. We provide linear regressions for the $R_{\mathrm{Hβ}}$-$L_{5100}$ relation, solely for the SEAMBH sample and for low-accretion AGNs. We find that the relative strength of Fe II and the profile of the H$β$ emission line can be used as proxies of accretion rate, showing that the shortening of H$β$ lags depends on accretion rates. The recent SDSS-RM discovery of shortened H$β$ lags in AGNs with low accretion rates provides compelling evidence for retrograde accretion onto the black hole. These evidences show that the canonical $R_{\mathrm{Hβ}}$-$L_{5100}$ relation holds only in AGNs with moderate accretion rates. At low accretion rates, it should be revised to include the effects of black hole spin, whereas the accretion rate itself becomes a key factor in the regime of high accretion rates.

Applying Cooperative Machine Learning to Speed Up the Annotation of Social Signals in Large Multi-modal Corpora

Scientific disciplines, such as Behavioural Psychology, Anthropology and recently Social Signal Processing are concerned with the systematic exploration of human behaviour. A typical work-flow includes the manual annotation (also called coding) of social signals in multi-modal corpora of considerable size. For the involved annotators this defines an exhausting and time-consuming task. In the article at hand we present a novel method and also provide the tools to speed up the coding procedure. To this end, we suggest and evaluate the use of Cooperative Machine Learning (CML) techniques to reduce manual labelling efforts by combining the power of computational capabilities and human intelligence. The proposed CML strategy starts with a small number of labelled instances and concentrates on predicting local parts first. Afterwards, a session-independent classification model is created to finish the remaining parts of the database. Confidence values are computed to guide the manual inspection and correction of the predictions. To bring the proposed approach into application we introduce NOVA - an open-source tool for collaborative and machine-aided annotations. In particular, it gives labellers immediate access to CML strategies and directly provides visual feedback on the results. Our experiments show that the proposed method has the potential to significantly reduce human labelling efforts.

Lepton-Number-Charged Scalars and Neutrino Beamstrahlung

Experimentally, baryon number minus lepton number, $B-L$, appears to be a good global symmetry of nature. We explore the consequences of the existence of gauge-singlet scalar fields charged under $B-L$ -- dubbed lepton-number-charged scalars, LeNCS -- and postulate that these couple to the standard model degrees of freedom in such a way that $B-L$ is conserved even at the non-renormalizable level. In this framework, neutrinos are Dirac fermions. Including only the lowest mass-dimension effective operators, some of the LeNCS couple predominantly to neutrinos and may be produced in terrestrial neutrino experiments. We examine several existing constraints from particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology to the existence of a LeNCS carrying $B-L$ charge equal to two, and discuss the emission of LeNCS's via "neutrino beamstrahlung," which occurs every once in a while when neutrinos scatter off of ordinary matter. We identify regions of the parameter space where existing and future neutrino experiments, including the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, are at the frontier of searches for such new phenomena.

Improved English to Russian Translation by Neural Suffix Prediction

Neural machine translation (NMT) suffers a performance deficiency when a limited vocabulary fails to cover the source or target side adequately, which happens frequently when dealing with morphologically rich languages. To address this problem, previous work focused on adjusting translation granularity or expanding the vocabulary size. However, morphological information is relatively under-considered in NMT architectures, which may further improve translation quality. We propose a novel method, which can not only reduce data sparsity but also model morphology through a simple but effective mechanism. By predicting the stem and suffix separately during decoding, our system achieves an improvement of up to 1.98 BLEU compared with previous work on English to Russian translation. Our method is orthogonal to different NMT architectures and stably gains improvements on various domains.
