Effects of Bound States on Dark Matter Annihilation

We study the impact of bound state formation on dark matter annihilation rates in models where dark matter interacts via a light mediator, the dark photon. We derive the general cross section for radiative capture into all possible bound states, and point out its non-trivial dependence on the dark matter velocity and the dark photon mass. For indirect detection, our result shows that dark matter annihilation inside bound states can play an important role in enhancing signal rates over the rate for direct dark matter annihilation with Sommerfeld enhancement. The effects are strongest for large dark gauge coupling and when the dark photon mass is smaller than the typical momentum of dark matter in the galaxy. As an example, we show that for thermal dark matter the Fermi gamma ray constraint is substantially increased once bound state effects are taken into account. We also find that bound state effects are not important for dark matter annihilation during the freeze out and recombination epochs.

Length Scale of Correlated Dynamics in Ultra-thin Molecular Glasses

Physical vapor deposition (PVD) is widely used in manufacturing ultra-thin layers of amorphous organic solids. Here, we demonstrate that these films exhibit a sharp transition from glassy solid to liquid-like behavior with thickness below 30 nm. This liquid-like behavior persists even at temperatures well below the glass transition temperature, T$_{\mathrm{g}}$. The enhanced dynamics in these films can produce large scale morphological features during PVD and lead to a dewetting instability in films held at temperatures as low as T$_{\mathrm{g}}$-35 K. We measure the effective viscosity of organic glass films by monitoring the dewetting kinetics. These measurements combined with cooling rate-dependent T$_{\mathrm{g}}$ measurements show that the apparent activation barrier for rearrangement decreases sharply in films thinner than 30 nm. These observations suggest long-range facilitation of dynamics induced by the free surface, with dramatic effects on the properties of nano-scale amorphous materials.

Hidden SU(N) Glueball Dark Matter

We investigate the possibility that the dark matter candidate is from a pure non-abelian gauge theory of the hidden sector, motivated in large part by its elegance and simplicity. The dark matter is the lightest bound state made of the confined gauge fields, the hidden glueball. We point out this simple setup is capable of providing rich and novel phenomena in the dark sector, especially in the parameter space of large N. They include self-interacting and warm dark matter scenarios, Bose-Einstein condensation leading to massive dark stars possibly millions of times heavier than our sun giving rise to gravitational lensing effects, and indirect detections through higher dimensional operators as well as interesting collider signatures.

Perspectives of Racetrack Memory for Large-Capacity On-Chip Memory: From Device to System

Current-induced domain wall motion (CIDWM) is regarded as a promising way towards achieving emerging high-density, high-speed and low-power non-volatile devices. Racetrack memory is an attractive spintronic memory based on this phenomenon, which can store and transfer a series of data along a magnetic nanowire. However, storage capacity issue is always one of the most serious bottlenecks hindering its application for practical systems. This paper focuses on the potential of racetrack memory towards large capacity. The investigations covering from device level to system level have been carried out. Various alternative mechanisms to improve the capacity of racetrack memory have been proposed and elucidated, e.g. magnetic field assistance, chiral DW motion and voltage-controlled flexible DW pinning. All of them can increase nanowire length, allowing enhanced feasibility of large-capacity racetrack memory. By using SPICE compatible racetrack memory electrical model and commercial CMOS 28 nm design kit, mixed simulations are performed to validate their functionalities and analyze their performance. System level evaluations demonstrate the impact of capacity improvement on overall system. Compared with traditional SRAM based cache, racetrack memory based cache shows its advantages in terms of execution time and energy consumption.

Broad Diphotons from Narrow States

ATLAS and CMS have each reported a modest diphoton excess consistent with the decay of a broad resonance at ~ 750 GeV. We show how this signal can arise in a weakly coupled theory comprised solely of narrow width particles. In particular, if the decaying particle is produced off-shell, then the associated diphoton resonance will have a broad, adjustable width. We present simplified models which explain the diphoton excess through the three-body decay of a scalar or fermion. Our minimal ultraviolet completion is a weakly coupled and renormalizable theory of a singlet scalar plus a heavy vector-like quark and lepton. The smoking gun of this mechanism is an asymmetric diphoton peak recoiling against missing transverse energy, jets, or leptons.

Yukawa Bound States of a Large Number of Fermions

We consider the bound state problem for a field theory that contains a Dirac fermion $χ$ that Yukawa couples to a (light) scalar field $ϕ$. We are interested in bound states with a large number $N$ of $χ$ particles. A Fermi gas model is used to numerically determine the dependence of the radius $R$ of these bound states on $N$ and also the dependence of the binding energy on $N$. Since scalar interactions with relativistic $χ$'s are suppressed two regimes emerge. For modest values of $N$ the state is composed of non-relativistic $χ$ particles. In this regime as $N$ increases $R$ decreases. Eventually the core region becomes relativistic and the size of the state starts to increase as $N$ increases. As a result, for fixed Yukawa coupling and $χ$ mass, there is a minimum sized state that occurs roughly at the value of $N$ where the core region first becomes relativistic. We also compute an elastic scattering form factor that can be relevant for direct detection if the dark matter is composed of such $χ$ particles.

Current-limiting challenges for all-spin logic devices

All-spin logic device (ASLD) has attracted increasing interests as one of the most promising post-CMOS device candidates, thanks to its low power, non-volatility and logic-in-memory structure. Here we investigate the key current-limiting factors and develop a physics-based model of ASLD through nano-magnet switching, the spin transport properties and the breakdown characteristic of channel. First, ASLD with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) nano-magnet is proposed to reduce the critical current (Ic0). Most important, the spin transport efficiency can be enhanced by analyzing the device structure, dimension, contact resistance as well as material parameters. Furthermore, breakdown current density (JBR) of spin channel is studied for the upper current limitation. As a result, we can deduce current-limiting conditions and estimate energy dissipation. Based on the model, we demonstrate ASLD with different structures and channel materials (graphene and copper). Asymmetric structure is found to be the optimal option for current limitations. Copper channel outperforms graphene in term of energy but seriously suffers from breakdown current limit. By exploring the current limit and performance tradeoffs, the optimization of ASLD is also discussed. This benchmarking model of ASLD opens up new prospects for design and implementation of future spintronics applications.

Higgs CP Violation from Vectorlike Quarks

We explore CP violating aspects in the Higgs sector of models where new vectorlike quarks carry Yukawa couplings mainly to the third generation quarks of the Standard Model. We point out that in the simplest model, Higgs CP violating interactions only exist in the hWW channel. At low energy, we find that rare B decays can place similarly strong constraints as those from electric dipole moments on the source of CP violation. These observations offer a new handle to discriminate from other Higgs CP violating scenarios such as scalar sector extensions of the Standard Model, and imply an interesting future interplay among limits from different experiments.

Landau damping effects in the synchronization of conformist and contrarian oscillators

Two decades ago, a phenomenon resembling Landau damping was described in the synchronization of globally coupled oscillators: the evidence of a regime where the order parameter decays when linear theory predicts neutral stability for the incoherent state. We here show that such an effect is far more generic, as soon as phase oscillators couple to their mean field according to their natural frequencies, being then grouped into two distinct populations of conformists and contrarians. We report the analytical solution of this latter situation, which allows determining the critical coupling strength and the stability of the incoherent state, together with extensive numerical simulations that fully support all theoretical predictions. The relevance of our results is discussed in relationship to collective phenomena occurring in polarized social systems.

Complementarity of LHC and EDMs for Exploring Higgs CP Violation

We analyze the constraints on a CP-violating, flavor conserving, two Higgs doublet model from the measurements of Higgs properties and from the search for heavy Higgs bosons at LHC, and show that the stronger limits typically come from the heavy Higgs search channels. The limits on CP violation arising from the Higgs sector measurements are complementary to those from EDM measurements. Combining all current constraints from low energy to colliders, we set generic upper bounds on the CP violating angle which parametrizes the CP odd component in the 126 GeV Higgs boson.

Long-lived Light Mediator to Dark Matter and Primordial Small Scale Spectrum

We calculate the early universe evolution of perturbations in the dark matter energy density in the context of simple dark sector models containing a GeV scale light mediator. We consider the case that the mediator is long lived, with lifetime up to a second, and before decaying it temporarily dominates the energy density of the universe. We show that for primordial perturbations that enter the horizon around this period, the interplay between linear growth during matter domination and collisional damping can generically lead to a sharp peak in the spectrum of dark matter density perturbation. As a result, the population of the smallest DM halos gets enhanced. Possible implications of this scenario are discussed.

Baryon Number Violation via Majorana Neutrinos in the Early Universe, at the LHC, and Deep Underground

We propose and investigate a novel, minimal, and experimentally testable framework for baryogenesis, dubbed dexiogenesis, using baryon number violating effective interactions of right-handed Majorana neutrinos responsible for the seesaw mechanism. The distinct LHC signature of our framework is same-sign top quark final states, possibly originating from displaced vertices. The region of parameters relevant for LHC phenomenology can also yield concomitant signals in nucleon decay experiments. We provide a simple ultraviolet origin for our effective operators, by adding a color-triplet scalar, which could ultimately arise from a grand unified theory.

Adaptive Stochastic Gradient Descent on the Grassmannian for Robust Low-Rank Subspace Recovery and Clustering

In this paper, we present GASG21 (Grassmannian Adaptive Stochastic Gradient for $L_{2,1}$ norm minimization), an adaptive stochastic gradient algorithm to robustly recover the low-rank subspace from a large matrix. In the presence of column outliers, we reformulate the batch mode matrix $L_{2,1}$ norm minimization with rank constraint problem as a stochastic optimization approach constrained on Grassmann manifold. For each observed data vector, the low-rank subspace $\mathcal{S}$ is updated by taking a gradient step along the geodesic of Grassmannian. In order to accelerate the convergence rate of the stochastic gradient method, we choose to adaptively tune the constant step-size by leveraging the consecutive gradients. Furthermore, we demonstrate that with proper initialization, the K-subspaces extension, K-GASG21, can robustly cluster a large number of corrupted data vectors into a union of subspaces. Numerical experiments on synthetic and real data demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed algorithms even with heavy column outliers corruption.

LazyCtrl: Scalable Network Control for Cloud Data Centers

The advent of software defined networking enables flexible, reliable and feature-rich control planes for data center networks. However, the tight coupling of centralized control and complete visibility leads to a wide range of issues among which scalability has risen to prominence. To address this, we present LazyCtrl, a novel hybrid control plane design for data center networks where network control is carried out by distributed control mechanisms inside independent groups of switches while complemented with a global controller. Our design is motivated by the observation that data center traffic is usually highly skewed and thus edge switches can be grouped according to traffic locality. LazyCtrl aims at bringing laziness to the global controller by dynamically devolving most of the control tasks to independent switch groups to process frequent intra-group events near datapaths while handling rare inter-group or other specified events by the controller. We implement LazyCtrl and build a prototype based on Open vSwich and Floodlight. Trace-driven experiments on our prototype show that an effective switch grouping is easy to maintain in multi-tenant clouds and the central controller can be significantly shielded by staying lazy, with its workload reduced by up to 82%.

CPV Phenomenology of Flavor Conserving Two Higgs Doublet Models

We analyze the constraints on CP-violating, flavor conserving Two Higgs Doublet Models (2HDMs) implied by measurements of Higgs boson properties at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and by the non-observation of permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of molecules, atoms and the neutron. We find that the LHC and EDM constraints are largely complementary, with the LHC studies constraining the mixing between the neutral CP-even states and EDMs probing the effect of mixing between the CP-even and CP-odd scalars. The presently most stringent constraints are implied by the non-observation of the ThO molecule EDM signal. Future improvements in the sensitivity of neutron and diamagnetic atom EDM searches could yield competitive or even more severe constraints. We analyze the quantitative impact of hadronic and nuclear theory uncertainties on the interpretation of the latter systems and conclude that these uncertainties cloud the impact of projected improvements in the corresponding experimental sensitivities.

Supernova Cooling in a Dark Matter Smog

A light hidden gauge boson with kinetic mixing with the usual photon is a popular setup in theories of dark matter. The supernova cooling via radiating the hidden boson is known to put an important constraint on the mixing. I consider the possible role dark matter, which under reasonable assumptions naturally exists inside supernova, can play in the cooling picture. Because the interaction between the hidden gauge boson and DM is likely unsuppressed, even a small number of dark matter compared to protons inside the supernova could dramatically shorten the free streaming length of the hidden boson. A picture of a dark matter "smog" inside the supernova, which substantially relaxes the cooling constraint, is discussed in detail.

Effective Theory and Simple Completions for Neutrino Interactions

We consider all the dimension 6 operators as well as some simple extensions of the standard model that give new contributions to neutrino interactions with matter. Such interactions are usually parametrized by $ε_{αβ}$, where $α$ and $β$ are neutrino flavor indices taking the values $e$, $μ$ and $τ$. In the simple models we consider the $ε_{αβ}$'s are much more constrained than in the operator-based model-independent approach. Typically the $ε_{αβ}$'s are restricted to be smaller in magnitude than around $10^{-3}$. In some of the leptoquark models, a specific pattern for the leptoquark Yukawa couplings allows the diagonal element $ε_{ττ}$ to be as large as $\sim0.1$, or one of $ε_{ee}$, $ε_{μμ}\sim0.01$. We discuss the interplay between neutrino physics and leptoquark searches at the LHC.

The Unambiguous Distance in a Phase-based Ranging System with Hopping Frequencies

It is a challenge to specify unambiguous distance (UD) in a phase-based ranging system with hopping frequencies (PRSHF). In this letter, we propose to characterize the UD in a PRSHF by the probability that it takes on its maximum value. We obtain a very simple and elegant expression of the probability with growth estimation techniques from analytic number theory. It is revealed that the UD in a PRSHF usually takes on the maximum value with as few as 10 frequencies in measurement, almost independent of the specific distribution of available bandwidth.
