Act Like a Radiologist: Towards Reliable Multi-view Correspondence Reasoning for Mammogram Mass Detection

Mammogram mass detection is crucial for diagnosing and preventing the breast cancers in clinical practice. The complementary effect of multi-view mammogram images provides valuable information about the breast anatomical prior structure and is of great significance in digital mammography interpretation. However, unlike radiologists who can utilize the natural reasoning ability to identify masses based on multiple mammographic views, how to endow the existing object detection models with the capability of multi-view reasoning is vital for decision-making in clinical diagnosis but remains the boundary to explore. In this paper, we propose an Anatomy-aware Graph convolutional Network (AGN), which is tailored for mammogram mass detection and endows existing detection methods with multi-view reasoning ability. The proposed AGN consists of three steps. Firstly, we introduce a Bipartite Graph convolutional Network (BGN) to model the intrinsic geometric and semantic relations of ipsilateral views. Secondly, considering that the visual asymmetry of bilateral views is widely adopted in clinical practice to assist the diagnosis of breast lesions, we propose an Inception Graph convolutional Network (IGN) to model the structural similarities of bilateral views. Finally, based on the constructed graphs, the multi-view information is propagated through nodes methodically, which equips the features learned from the examined view with multi-view reasoning ability. Experiments on two standard benchmarks reveal that AGN significantly exceeds the state-of-the-art performance. Visualization results show that AGN provides interpretable visual cues for clinical diagnosis.

Gene-Patterns: Should Architecture be Customized for Each Application?

Providing architectural support is crucial for newly arising applications to achieve high performance and high system efficiency. Currently there is a trend in designing accelerators for special applications, while arguably a debate is sparked whether we should customize architecture for each application. In this study, we introduce what we refer to as Gene-Patterns, which are the base patterns of diverse applications. We present a Recursive Reduce methodology to identify the hotspots, and a HOtspot Trace Suite (HOTS) is provided for the research community. We first extract the hotspot patterns, and then, remove the redundancy to obtain the base patterns. We find that although the number of applications is huge and ever-increasing, the amount of base patterns is relatively small, due to the similarity among the patterns of diverse applications. The similarity stems not only from the algorithms but also from the data structures. We build the Periodic Table of Memory Access Patterns (PT-MAP), where the indifference curves are analogous to the energy levels in physics, and memory performance optimization is essentially an energy level transition. We find that inefficiency results from the mismatch between some of the base patterns and the micro-architecture of modern processors. We have identified the key micro-architecture demands of the base patterns. The Gene-Pattern concept, methodology, and toolkit will facilitate the design of both hardware and software for the matching between architectures and applications.

Phonon and Thermal Properties of Quasi-Two-Dimensional FePS3 and MnPS3 Antiferromagnetic Semiconductor Materials

We report results of investigation of the phonon and thermal properties of the exfoliated films of layered single crystals of antiferromagnetic FePS3 and MnPS3 semiconductors. The Raman spectroscopy was conducted using three different excitation lasers with the wavelengths of 325 nm (UV), 488 nm (blue), and 633 nm (red). The resonant UV-Raman spectroscopy reveals new spectral features, which are not detectable via visible Raman light scattering. The thermal conductivity of FePS3 and MnPS3 thin films was measured by two different techniques: the steady-state Raman optothermal and transient time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. The Raman optothermal measurements provided the orientation-average thermal conductivity of FePS3 to be 1.35 W/mK at room temperature. The transient measurements revealed that the through-plane and in-plane thermal conductivity of FePS3 is 0.85 W/mK and 2.7 W/mK, respectively. The films of MnPS3 have higher thermal conductivity of 1.1 W/mK through-plane and 6.3 W/mK in-plane. The data obtained by both techniques reveal strong thermal anisotropy of the films and the dominant contribution of phonons to heat conduction. Our results are important for the proposed applications of the antiferromagnetic semiconductor thin films in spintronic devices.

Variational Bayesian Dropout with a Hierarchical Prior

Variational dropout (VD) is a generalization of Gaussian dropout, which aims at inferring the posterior of network weights based on a log-uniform prior on them to learn these weights as well as dropout rate simultaneously. The log-uniform prior not only interprets the regularization capacity of Gaussian dropout in network training, but also underpins the inference of such posterior. However, the log-uniform prior is an improper prior (i.e., its integral is infinite) which causes the inference of posterior to be ill-posed, thus restricting the regularization performance of VD. To address this problem, we present a new generalization of Gaussian dropout, termed variational Bayesian dropout (VBD), which turns to exploit a hierarchical prior on the network weights and infer a new joint posterior. Specifically, we implement the hierarchical prior as a zero-mean Gaussian distribution with variance sampled from a uniform hyper-prior. Then, we incorporate such a prior into inferring the joint posterior over network weights and the variance in the hierarchical prior, with which both the network training and the dropout rate estimation can be cast into a joint optimization problem. More importantly, the hierarchical prior is a proper prior which enables the inference of posterior to be well-posed. In addition, we further show that the proposed VBD can be seamlessly applied to network compression. Experiments on both classification and network compression tasks demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed VBD in terms of regularizing network training.

FingerNet: An Unified Deep Network for Fingerprint Minutiae Extraction

Minutiae extraction is of critical importance in automated fingerprint recognition. Previous works on rolled/slap fingerprints failed on latent fingerprints due to noisy ridge patterns and complex background noises. In this paper, we propose a new way to design deep convolutional network combining domain knowledge and the representation ability of deep learning. In terms of orientation estimation, segmentation, enhancement and minutiae extraction, several typical traditional methods performed well on rolled/slap fingerprints are transformed into convolutional manners and integrated as an unified plain network. We demonstrate that this pipeline is equivalent to a shallow network with fixed weights. The network is then expanded to enhance its representation ability and the weights are released to learn complex background variance from data, while preserving end-to-end differentiability. Experimental results on NIST SD27 latent database and FVC 2004 slap database demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art minutiae extraction algorithms. Some Results on Ethnic Conflicts Based on Evolutionary Game Simulation

The force of the ethnic separatism, essentially origining from negative effect of ethnic identity, is damaging the stability and harmony of multiethnic countries. In order to eliminate the foundation of the ethnic separatism and set up a harmonious ethnic relationship, some scholars have proposed a viewpoint: ethnic harmony could be promoted by popularizing civic identity. However, this viewpoint is discussed only from a philosophical prospective and still lack supports of scientific evidences. Because ethic group and ethnic identity are products of evolution and ethnic identity is the parochialism strategy under the perspective of game theory, this paper proposes an evolutionary game simulation model to study the relationship between civic identity and ethnic conflict based on evolutionary game theory. The simulation results indicate that: 1) the ratio of individuals with civic identity has a positive association with the frequency of ethnic conflicts; 2) ethnic conflict will not die out by killing all ethnic members once for all, and it also cannot be reduced by a forcible pressure, i.e., increasing the ratio of individuals with civic identity; 3) the average frequencies of conflicts can stay in a low level by promoting civic identity periodically and persistently.

A Simple Policy for Multiple Queues with Size-Independent Service Times

We consider a service system with two Poisson arrival queues. A server chooses which queue to serve at each moment. Once a queue is served, all the customers will be served within a fixed amount of time. This model is useful in studying airport shuttling or certain online computing systems. We propose a simple yet optimal state-independent policy for this problem which is not only easy to implement, but also performs very well.
