Fractional-Boundary-Regularized Deep Galerkin Method for Variational Inequalities in Mixed Optimal Stopping and Control

Mixed optimal stopping and stochastic control problems define variational inequalities with non-linear Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) operators, whose numerical solution is notoriously difficult and lack of reliable benchmarks. We first use the dual approach to transform it into a linear operator, and then introduce a Fractional-Boundary-Regularized Deep Galerkin Method (FBR-DGM) that augments the classical $L^2$ loss with Sobolev-Slobodeckij norms on the parabolic boundary, enforcing regularity and yielding consistent improvements in the network approximation and its derivatives. The improved accuracy allows the network to be converted back to the original solution using the dual transform. The self-consistency and stability of the network can be tested by checking the primal-dual relationship among optimal value, optimal wealth, and optimal control, offering innovative benchmarks in the absence of analytical solutions.

Telecom-to-Visible Quantum Frequency Converter on a Silicon Nitride Chip

Quantum frequency conversion serves a key role in the realization of hybrid quantum networks by interfacing between wavelength-incompatible platforms. Here we present the first quantum frequency converter connecting visible and telecom domains on a silicon nitride (SiN) chip, using Bragg-scattering four-wave mixing to upconvert heralded single photons from 1260 to 698 nm, which covers a 192 THz span. We examine the noise sources in SiN and devise approaches to suppress noise photons at the source and target frequencies to enable measurements at the single-photon level. We demonstrate an on-chip conversion efficiency of 5% in photon flux and describe design modifications that can be implemented to significantly improve it. Our results pave the way for the implementation of CMOS-compatible devices in quantum networks.

Single Atom Catalysts with Halogen Ligands: Elevating the HER Performance of Pd-anchored MoS2 monolayer

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted ever-growing interest due to their high atom-utilization efficiency and potential for cost-effective of hydrogen production. However, enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance remains a key challenge in developing SACs for HER technology. Herein, we employed first-principles calculations in conjunction with the climbing-image nudged elastic band (CI-NEB) method to explore the effect of surface ligands (F, Cl, Br, I) on the HER performance and mechanism of single-atom (Pd or Cu)-anchored MoS2 monolayer. The results indicate that the relative Gibbs free energy for the adsorbed hydrogen atom in the I-Pd@MoS2 system is an exceptionally low value of -0.13 eV, which is not only comparable to that of Pt-based catalysts but also significantly more favorable than the calculated 0.84 eV for Pd@MoS2. However, the introduction of ligands to Cu@MoS2 deteriorates HER performance due to strong coupling between the absorbed H and ligands. It reveals that the ligand I restructures the local chemical microenvironment surrounding the SAC Pd, leading to impurity bands near the Fermi level that couple favorably with the s states of H atoms, yielding numerous highly active sites to enhance catalytic performance. Furthermore, the CI-NEB method elucidates that the enhanced HER mechanism for the I-Pd@MoS2 catalyst should belong to the coexistence of the Volmer-Tafel and Volmer-Heyrovsky reactions. This investigation provides a valuable framework for the experimental design and development of innovative single-atom catalysts.

Flexible delivery of broadband, 100-fs mid-infrared pulses in the water-absorption band using hollow-core photonic crystal fibre

High quality free-space and over-fibre transmission of mid-IR light is limited by factors such as material-related absorption, diffraction, light leakage and nonlinearity. Conventional vacuum apparatus can be utilized for high-quality laser-beam delivery to address these issues, the deployment of such apparatus would, however, increase the system complexity, being detrimental to their practical applications. Here we report the successful use of evacuated hollow-core photonic crystal fibre (PCF) to flexibly transmit ultrafast mid-IR pulses over several meters, while preserving exceptional spatial, spectral and temporal fidelity. The PCF was engineered to feature a low-loss transmission band within the water absorption range, and an evacuated 5-m length was used to transmit Watt-level, 100 fs pulses centred at around 2.8 microns. A comparison between free-space transmission and air-filled PCF highlights the superior performance of the evacuated hollow-core PCF, indicating its strong suitability for the flexible delivery of sub-ps laser pulses in the mid-IR.

Upper semi-continuity of metric entropy for diffeomorphisms with dominated splitting

For a $C^{r}$ $(r>1)$ diffeomorphism on a compact manifold that admits a dominated splitting, this paper establishes the upper semi-continuity of the entropy map. More precisely, this paper establishes the upper semi-continuity of the entropy map in the following two cases: (1) if a sequence of invariant measures has only positive Lyapunov exponents along a sub-bundle and non-positive Lyapunov exponents along another sub-bundle, then the upper limit of their metric entropies is less than or equal to the entropy of the limiting measure; (2) if an invariant measure has positive Lyapunov exponents along a sub-bundle and non-positive Lyapunov exponents along another sub-bundle, then the entropy map is upper semi-continuous at this measure.

High-speed and High-quality Vision Reconstruction of Spike Camera with Spike Stability Theorem

Neuromorphic vision sensors, such as the dynamic vision sensor (DVS) and spike camera, have gained increasing attention in recent years. The spike camera can detect fine textures by mimicking the fovea in the human visual system, and output a high-frequency spike stream. Real-time high-quality vision reconstruction from the spike stream can build a bridge to high-level vision task applications of the spike camera. To realize high-speed and high-quality vision reconstruction of the spike camera, we propose a new spike stability theorem that reveals the relationship between spike stream characteristics and stable light intensity. Based on the spike stability theorem, two parameter-free algorithms are designed for the real-time vision reconstruction of the spike camera. To demonstrate the performances of our algorithms, two datasets (a public dataset PKU-Spike-High-Speed and a newly constructed dataset SpikeCityPCL) are used to compare the reconstruction quality and speed of various reconstruction methods. Experimental results show that, compared with the current state-of-the-art (SOTA) reconstruction methods, our reconstruction methods obtain the best tradeoff between the reconstruction quality and speed. Additionally, we design the FPGA implementation method of our algorithms to realize the real-time (running at 20,000 FPS) visual reconstruction. Our work provides new theorem and algorithm foundations for the real-time edge-end vision processing of the spike camera.

SimpleBEV: Improved LiDAR-Camera Fusion Architecture for 3D Object Detection

More and more research works fuse the LiDAR and camera information to improve the 3D object detection of the autonomous driving system. Recently, a simple yet effective fusion framework has achieved an excellent detection performance, fusing the LiDAR and camera features in a unified bird's-eye-view (BEV) space. In this paper, we propose a LiDAR-camera fusion framework, named SimpleBEV, for accurate 3D object detection, which follows the BEV-based fusion framework and improves the camera and LiDAR encoders, respectively. Specifically, we perform the camera-based depth estimation using a cascade network and rectify the depth results with the depth information derived from the LiDAR points. Meanwhile, an auxiliary branch that implements the 3D object detection using only the camera-BEV features is introduced to exploit the camera information during the training phase. Besides, we improve the LiDAR feature extractor by fusing the multi-scaled sparse convolutional features. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. Our method achieves 77.6\% NDS accuracy on the nuScenes dataset, showcasing superior performance in the 3D object detection track.

Nonlinear Dynamics of Coupled-Resonator Kerr-Combs

The nonlinear interaction of a microresonator pumped by a laser has revealed complex dynamics including soliton formation and chaos. Initial studies of coupled-resonator systems reveal even more complicated dynamics that can lead to deterministic modelocking and efficient comb generation. Here we perform theoretical analysis and experiments that provide insight into the dynamical behavior of coupled-resonator systems operating in the normal group-velocity-dispersion regime. Our stability analysis and simulations reveal that the strong mode-coupling regime, which gives rise to spectrally-broad comb states, can lead to an instability mechanism in the auxiliary resonator that destabilizes the comb state and prevents mode-locking. We find that this instability can be suppressed by introducing loss in the auxiliary resonator. We investigate the stability of both single- and multi-pulse solutions and verify our theoretical predictions by performing experiments in a silicon-nitride platform. Our results provide an understanding for accessing broad, efficient, relatively flat high-power mode-locked combs for numerous applications in spectroscopy, time-frequency metrology, and data communications.

FairEHR-CLP: Towards Fairness-Aware Clinical Predictions with Contrastive Learning in Multimodal Electronic Health Records

In the high-stakes realm of healthcare, ensuring fairness in predictive models is crucial. Electronic Health Records (EHRs) have become integral to medical decision-making, yet existing methods for enhancing model fairness restrict themselves to unimodal data and fail to address the multifaceted social biases intertwined with demographic factors in EHRs. To mitigate these biases, we present FairEHR-CLP: a general framework for Fairness-aware Clinical Predictions with Contrastive Learning in EHRs. FairEHR-CLP operates through a two-stage process, utilizing patient demographics, longitudinal data, and clinical notes. First, synthetic counterparts are generated for each patient, allowing for diverse demographic identities while preserving essential health information. Second, fairness-aware predictions employ contrastive learning to align patient representations across sensitive attributes, jointly optimized with an MLP classifier with a softmax layer for clinical classification tasks. Acknowledging the unique challenges in EHRs, such as varying group sizes and class imbalance, we introduce a novel fairness metric to effectively measure error rate disparities across subgroups. Extensive experiments on three diverse EHR datasets on three tasks demonstrate the effectiveness of FairEHR-CLP in terms of fairness and utility compared with competitive baselines. FairEHR-CLP represents an advancement towards ensuring both accuracy and equity in predictive healthcare models.

SimpleLLM4AD: An End-to-End Vision-Language Model with Graph Visual Question Answering for Autonomous Driving

Many fields could benefit from the rapid development of the large language models (LLMs). The end-to-end autonomous driving (e2eAD) is one of the typically fields facing new opportunities as the LLMs have supported more and more modalities. Here, by utilizing vision-language model (VLM), we proposed an e2eAD method called SimpleLLM4AD. In our method, the e2eAD task are divided into four stages, which are perception, prediction, planning, and behavior. Each stage consists of several visual question answering (VQA) pairs and VQA pairs interconnect with each other constructing a graph called Graph VQA (GVQA). By reasoning each VQA pair in the GVQA through VLM stage by stage, our method could achieve e2e driving with language. In our method, vision transformers (ViT) models are employed to process nuScenes visual data, while VLM are utilized to interpret and reason about the information extracted from the visual inputs. In the perception stage, the system identifies and classifies objects from the driving environment. The prediction stage involves forecasting the potential movements of these objects. The planning stage utilizes the gathered information to develop a driving strategy, ensuring the safety and efficiency of the autonomous vehicle. Finally, the behavior stage translates the planned actions into executable commands for the vehicle. Our experiments demonstrate that SimpleLLM4AD achieves competitive performance in complex driving scenarios.

Unveiling and Mitigating Bias in Mental Health Analysis with Large Language Models

The advancement of large language models (LLMs) has demonstrated strong capabilities across various applications, including mental health analysis. However, existing studies have focused on predictive performance, leaving the critical issue of fairness underexplored, posing significant risks to vulnerable populations. Despite acknowledging potential biases, previous works have lacked thorough investigations into these biases and their impacts. To address this gap, we systematically evaluate biases across seven social factors (e.g., gender, age, religion) using ten LLMs with different prompting methods on eight diverse mental health datasets. Our results show that GPT-4 achieves the best overall balance in performance and fairness among LLMs, although it still lags behind domain-specific models like MentalRoBERTa in some cases. Additionally, our tailored fairness-aware prompts can effectively mitigate bias in mental health predictions, highlighting the great potential for fair analysis in this field.

RUPBench: Benchmarking Reasoning Under Perturbations for Robustness Evaluation in Large Language Models

With the increasing use of large language models (LLMs), ensuring reliable performance in diverse, real-world environments is essential. Despite their remarkable achievements, LLMs often struggle with adversarial inputs, significantly impacting their effectiveness in practical applications. To systematically understand the robustness of LLMs, we present RUPBench, a comprehensive benchmark designed to evaluate LLM robustness across diverse reasoning tasks. Our benchmark incorporates 15 reasoning datasets, categorized into commonsense, arithmetic, logical, and knowledge-intensive reasoning, and introduces nine types of textual perturbations at lexical, syntactic, and semantic levels. By examining the performance of state-of-the-art LLMs such as GPT-4o, Llama3, Phi-3, and Gemma on both original and perturbed datasets, we provide a detailed analysis of their robustness and error patterns. Our findings highlight that larger models tend to exhibit greater robustness to perturbations. Additionally, common error types are identified through manual inspection, revealing specific challenges faced by LLMs in different reasoning contexts. This work provides insights into areas where LLMs need further improvement to handle diverse and noisy inputs effectively.

TRAM: Benchmarking Temporal Reasoning for Large Language Models

Reasoning about time is essential for understanding the nuances of events described in natural language. Previous research on this topic has been limited in scope, characterized by a lack of standardized benchmarks that would allow for consistent evaluations across different studies. In this paper, we introduce TRAM, a temporal reasoning benchmark composed of ten datasets, encompassing various temporal aspects of events such as order, arithmetic, frequency, and duration, designed to facilitate a comprehensive evaluation of the TeR capabilities of large language models (LLMs). We evaluate popular LLMs like GPT-4 and Llama2 in zero-shot and few-shot scenarios, and establish baselines with BERT-based and domain-specific models. Our findings indicate that the best-performing model lags significantly behind human performance. It is our aspiration that TRAM will spur further progress in enhancing the TeR capabilities of LLMs.

VREN: Volleyball Rally Dataset with Expression Notation Language

This research is intended to accomplish two goals: The first goal is to curate a large and information rich dataset that contains crucial and succinct summaries on the players' actions and positions and the back-and-forth travel patterns of the volleyball in professional and NCAA Div-I indoor volleyball games. While several prior studies have aimed to create similar datasets for other sports (e.g. badminton and soccer), creating such a dataset for indoor volleyball is not yet realized. The second goal is to introduce a volleyball descriptive language to fully describe the rally processes in the games and apply the language to our dataset. Based on the curated dataset and our descriptive sports language, we introduce three tasks for automated volleyball action and tactic analysis using our dataset: (1) Volleyball Rally Prediction, aimed at predicting the outcome of a rally and helping players and coaches improve decision-making in practice, (2) Setting Type and Hitting Type Prediction, to help coaches and players prepare more effectively for the game, and (3) Volleyball Tactics and Attacking Zone Statistics, to provide advanced volleyball statistics and help coaches understand the game and opponent's tactics better. We conducted case studies to show how experimental results can provide insights to the volleyball analysis community. Furthermore, experimental evaluation based on real-world data establishes a baseline for future studies and applications of our dataset and language. This study bridges the gap between the indoor volleyball field and computer science. The dataset is available at: https://github.com/haotianxia/VREN.

Metacognitive Prompting Improves Understanding in Large Language Models

In Large Language Models (LLMs), there have been consistent advancements in task-specific performance, largely influenced by effective prompt design. Recent advancements in prompting have enhanced reasoning in logic-intensive tasks for LLMs, yet the nuanced understanding abilities of these models, crucial for processing and interpreting complex information, remain underexplored. In this study, we introduce Metacognitive Prompting (MP), a strategy inspired by human introspective reasoning processes. Using MP, LLMs undergo a systematic series of structured, self-aware evaluations, drawing on both their vast inherent knowledge and new insights. We conduct extensive experiments on four prevalent LLMs: Llama2, PaLM2, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4, across ten natural language understanding (NLU) datasets from GLUE, SuperGLUE, BLUE, and LexGLUE benchmarks. Additionally, we compare our method with chain-of-thought prompting and its advanced versions. The results show that GPT-4 consistently excels across all tasks, while other models have shown significant progress in some tasks when used in conjunction with MP. Furthermore, MP consistently outperforms existing prompting methods in both general and domain-specific NLU tasks. This study underscores the potential to amplify the understanding abilities of LLMs and highlights the benefits of mirroring human introspective reasoning in NLU tasks.
