Probing gluon helicity with heavy flavor at the EIC

We propose a new measurement of the heavy flavor hadron double spin asymmetry in deep-inelastic scattering at a future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) to constrain the polarized gluon distribution function inside the proton. Statistical projection on $D^0$ meson double spin asymmetry is calculated with an EIC central detector using an all-silicon tracker and vertexing subsystem. A first impact study was done by interpreting pseudo-data at next-to-leading order in QCD. The sensitivity of the experimental observable in constraining gluon helicity distribution in a wide range of parton momentum fraction $x$ has been investigated considering different beam energy configurations. This measurement complements the inclusive spin-dependent structure function measurement and provides an opportunity to constrain the gluon helicity distribution in the moderate $x$ region.

DSANet: Dynamic Segment Aggregation Network for Video-Level Representation Learning

Long-range and short-range temporal modeling are two complementary and crucial aspects of video recognition. Most of the state-of-the-arts focus on short-range spatio-temporal modeling and then average multiple snippet-level predictions to yield the final video-level prediction. Thus, their video-level prediction does not consider spatio-temporal features of how video evolves along the temporal dimension. In this paper, we introduce a novel Dynamic Segment Aggregation (DSA) module to capture relationship among snippets. To be more specific, we attempt to generate a dynamic kernel for a convolutional operation to aggregate long-range temporal information among adjacent snippets adaptively. The DSA module is an efficient plug-and-play module and can be combined with the off-the-shelf clip-based models (i.e., TSM, I3D) to perform powerful long-range modeling with minimal overhead. The final video architecture, coined as DSANet. We conduct extensive experiments on several video recognition benchmarks (i.e., Mini-Kinetics-200, Kinetics-400, Something-Something V1 and ActivityNet) to show its superiority. Our proposed DSA module is shown to benefit various video recognition models significantly. For example, equipped with DSA modules, the top-1 accuracy of I3D ResNet-50 is improved from 74.9% to 78.2% on Kinetics-400. Codes are available at https://github.com/whwu95/DSANet.

Determining the helicity structure of the nucleon at the Electron Ion Collider in China

Understanding how sea quarks behave inside a nucleon is one of the most important physics goals of the proposed Electron-Ion Collider in China (EicC), which is designed to have 3.5 GeV polarized electron beam (80% polarization) colliding with 20 GeV polarized proton beam (70% polarization) at instantaneous luminosity of $2 \times 10^{33} {\rm cm}^{-2} {\rm s}^{-1}$. A specific topic at EicC is to understand the polarization of individual quarks inside a longitudinally polarized nucleon. The potential of various future EicC data, including the inclusive and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering data from both doubly polarized electron-proton and electron-$^3{\rm He}$ collisions, to reduce the uncertainties of parton helicity distributions is explored at the next-to-leading order in QCD, using the Error PDF Updating Method Package ({\sc ePump}) which is based on the Hessian profiling method. We show that the semi-inclusive data are well able to provide good separation between flavour distributions, and to constrain their uncertainties in the $x>0.005$ region, especially when electron-$^3{\rm He}$ collisions, acting as effective electron-neutron collisions, are taken into account. To enable this study, we have generated a Hessian representation of the DSSV14 set of PDF replicas, named DSSV14H PDFs.

Good Practices and A Strong Baseline for Traffic Anomaly Detection

The detection of traffic anomalies is a critical component of the intelligent city transportation management system. Previous works have proposed a variety of notable insights and taken a step forward in this field, however, dealing with the complex traffic environment remains a challenge. Moreover, the lack of high-quality data and the complexity of the traffic scene, motivate us to study this problem from a hand-crafted perspective. In this paper, we propose a straightforward and efficient framework that includes pre-processing, a dynamic track module, and post-processing. With video stabilization, background modeling, and vehicle detection, the pro-processing phase aims to generate candidate anomalies. The dynamic tracking module seeks and locates the start time of anomalies by utilizing vehicle motion patterns and spatiotemporal status. Finally, we use post-processing to fine-tune the temporal boundary of anomalies. Not surprisingly, our proposed framework was ranked $1^{st}$ in the NVIDIA AI CITY 2021 leaderboard for traffic anomaly detection. The code is available at: https://github.com/Endeavour10020/AICity2021-Anomaly-Detection .

Electron-Ion Collider in China

Lepton scattering is an established ideal tool for studying inner structure of small particles such as nucleons as well as nuclei. As a future high energy nuclear physics project, an Electron-ion collider in China (EicC) has been proposed. It will be constructed based on an upgraded heavy-ion accelerator, High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) which is currently under construction, together with a new electron ring. The proposed collider will provide highly polarized electrons (with a polarization of $\sim$80%) and protons (with a polarization of $\sim$70%) with variable center of mass energies from 15 to 20 GeV and the luminosity of (2-3) $\times$ 10$^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. Polarized deuterons and Helium-3, as well as unpolarized ion beams from Carbon to Uranium, will be also available at the EicC. The main foci of the EicC will be precision measurements of the structure of the nucleon in the sea quark region, including 3D tomography of nucleon; the partonic structure of nuclei and the parton interaction with the nuclear environment; the exotic states, especially those with heavy flavor quark contents. In addition, issues fundamental to understanding the origin of mass could be addressed by measurements of heavy quarkonia near-threshold production at the EicC. In order to achieve the above-mentioned physics goals, a hermetical detector system will be constructed with cutting-edge technologies. This document is the result of collective contributions and valuable inputs from experts across the globe. The EicC physics program complements the ongoing scientific programs at the Jefferson Laboratory and the future EIC project in the United States. The success of this project will also advance both nuclear and particle physics as well as accelerator and detector technology in China.

EIC Physics from An All-Silicon Tracking Detector

The proposed electron-ion collider has a rich physics program to study the internal structure of protons and heavy nuclei. This program will impose strict requirements on detector design. This paper explores how these requirements can be satisfied using an all-silicon tracking detector, by consideration of three representative probes: heavy flavor hadrons, jets, and exclusive vector mesons.

Performance in Test Beam of a Large-area and Light-weight GEM detector with 2D Stereo-Angle (U-V) Strip Readout

A large-area and light-weight Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detector was built at the University of Virginia as a prototype for the detector R$\&$D program of the future Electron Ion Collider. The prototype has a trapezoidal geometry designed as a generic sector module in a disk layer configuration of a forward tracker in collider detectors. It is based on light-weight material and narrow support frames in order to minimize multiple scattering and dead-to-sensitive area ratio. The chamber has a novel type of two dimensional (2D) stereo-angle readout board with U-V strips that provides (r,$φ$) position information in the cylindrical coordinate system of a collider environment. The prototype was tested at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility in October 2013 and the analysis of the test beam data demonstrates an excellent response uniformity of the large area chamber with an efficiency higher than 95%. An angular resolution of 60 $μ$rad in the azimuthal direction and a position resolution better than 550 $μ$m in the radial direction were achieved with the U-V strip readout board. The results are discussed in this paper.
