Screening promising CsV3Sb5-like kagome materials from systematic first-principles evaluation

CsV3Sb5 kagome lattice holds the promise for manifesting electron correlation, topology and superconducting. However, by far only three CsV3Sb5-like kagome materials have been experimentally spotted. In this work, we enlarge this family of materials to 1386 compounds via element species substitution, and the further screening process suggests that 28 promising candidates have superior thermodynamic stability, hence they are highly likely to be synthesized. Moreover, these compounds possess several identical electronic structures, and can be categorized into five non-magnetic and three magnetic groups accordingly. It is our hope that this work can greatly expand the viable phase space of the CsV3Sb5-like materials for investigating or tuning the novel quantum phenomena in kagome lattice.

A new quasi-one-dimensional superconductor parent compound NaMn$_6$Bi$_5$ with lower antiferromagnetic transition temperatures

Mn-based superconductor is rare and recently reported in quasi-one-dimensional KMn$_6$Bi$_5$ with [Mn$_6$Bi$_5$]-columns under high pressure. Here we report the synthesis, magnetic properties, electrical resistivity, and specific heat capacity of the newly-discovered quasi-one-dimensional NaMn$_6$Bi$_5$ single crystal. Compared with other AMn$_6$Bi$_5$ (A = K, Rb, and Cs), NaMn$_6$Bi$_5$ has larger intra-column Bi-Bi bond length, which may result in the two decoupled antiferromagnetic transitions at 47.3 K and 52.3 K. The relatively lower antiferromagnetic transition temperatures make NaMn$_6$Bi$_5$ a more suitable platform to explore Mn-based superconductors. Anisotropic resistivity and non-Fermi liquid behavior at low temperature are observed. Heat capacity measurement reveals that NaMn$_6$Bi$_5$ has similar Debye temperature with those of AMn$_6$Bi$_5$ (A = K and Rb), whereas the Sommerfeld coefficient is unusually large. Using first-principles calculations, the quite different density of states and an unusual enhancement near the Fermi level are observed for NaMn$_6$Bi$_5$, when compared with those of other AMn$_6$Bi$_5$ (A = K, Rb, and Cs) compounds.

CPRAL: Collaborative Panoptic-Regional Active Learning for Semantic Segmentation

Acquiring the most representative examples via active learning (AL) can benefit many data-dependent computer vision tasks by minimizing efforts of image-level or pixel-wise annotations. In this paper, we propose a novel Collaborative Panoptic-Regional Active Learning framework (CPRAL) to address the semantic segmentation task. For a small batch of images initially sampled with pixel-wise annotations, we employ panoptic information to initially select unlabeled samples. Considering the class imbalance in the segmentation dataset, we import a Regional Gaussian Attention module (RGA) to achieve semantics-biased selection. The subset is highlighted by vote entropy and then attended by Gaussian kernels to maximize the biased regions. We also propose a Contextual Labels Extension (CLE) to boost regional annotations with contextual attention guidance. With the collaboration of semantics-agnostic panoptic matching and regionbiased selection and extension, our CPRAL can strike a balance between labeling efforts and performance and compromise the semantics distribution. We perform extensive experiments on Cityscapes and BDD10K datasets and show that CPRAL outperforms the cutting-edge methods with impressive results and less labeling proportion.

Multi-domain Collaborative Feature Representation for Robust Visual Object Tracking

Jointly exploiting multiple different yet complementary domain information has been proven to be an effective way to perform robust object tracking. This paper focuses on effectively representing and utilizing complementary features from the frame domain and event domain for boosting object tracking performance in challenge scenarios. Specifically, we propose Common Features Extractor (CFE) to learn potential common representations from the RGB domain and event domain. For learning the unique features of the two domains, we utilize a Unique Extractor for Event (UEE) based on Spiking Neural Networks to extract edge cues in the event domain which may be missed in RGB in some challenging conditions, and a Unique Extractor for RGB (UER) based on Deep Convolutional Neural Networks to extract texture and semantic information in RGB domain. Extensive experiments on standard RGB benchmark and real event tracking dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. We show our approach outperforms all compared state-of-the-art tracking algorithms and verify event-based data is a powerful cue for tracking in challenging scenes.

DPGen: Automated Program Synthesis for Differential Privacy

Differential privacy has become a de facto standard for releasing data in a privacy-preserving way. Creating a differentially private algorithm is a process that often starts with a noise-free (non-private) algorithm. The designer then decides where to add noise, and how much of it to add. This can be a non-trivial process -- if not done carefully, the algorithm might either violate differential privacy or have low utility. In this paper, we present DPGen, a program synthesizer that takes in non-private code (without any noise) and automatically synthesizes its differentially private version (with carefully calibrated noise). Under the hood, DPGen uses novel algorithms to automatically generate a sketch program with candidate locations for noise, and then optimize privacy proof and noise scales simultaneously on the sketch program. Moreover, DPGen can synthesize sophisticated mechanisms that adaptively process queries until a specified privacy budget is exhausted. When evaluated on standard benchmarks, DPGen is able to generate differentially private mechanisms that optimize simple utility functions within 120 seconds. It is also powerful enough to synthesize adaptive privacy mechanisms.

PERT: A Progressively Region-based Network for Scene Text Removal

Scene text removal (STR) contains two processes: text localization and background reconstruction. Through integrating both processes into a single network, previous methods provide an implicit erasure guidance by modifying all pixels in the entire image. However, there exists two problems: 1) the implicit erasure guidance causes the excessive erasure to non-text areas; 2) the one-stage erasure lacks the exhaustive removal of text region. In this paper, we propose a ProgrEssively Region-based scene Text eraser (PERT), introducing an explicit erasure guidance and performing balanced multi-stage erasure for accurate and exhaustive text removal. Firstly, we introduce a new region-based modification strategy (RegionMS) to explicitly guide the erasure process. Different from previous implicitly guided methods, RegionMS performs targeted and regional erasure on only text region, and adaptively perceives stroke-level information to improve the integrity of non-text areas with only bounding box level annotations. Secondly, PERT performs balanced multi-stage erasure with several progressive erasing stages. Each erasing stage takes an equal step toward the text-erased image to ensure the exhaustive erasure of text regions. Compared with previous methods, PERT outperforms them by a large margin without the need of adversarial loss, obtaining SOTA results with high speed (71 FPS) and at least 25% lower parameter complexity. Code is available at https://github.com/wangyuxin87/PERT.

A Vision-based Irregular Obstacle Avoidance Framework via Deep Reinforcement Learning

Deep reinforcement learning has achieved great success in laser-based collision avoidance work because the laser can sense accurate depth information without too much redundant data, which can maintain the robustness of the algorithm when it is migrated from the simulation environment to the real world. However, high-cost laser devices are not only difficult to apply on a large scale but also have poor robustness to irregular objects, e.g., tables, chairs, shelves, etc. In this paper, we propose a vision-based collision avoidance framework to solve the challenging problem. Our method attempts to estimate the depth and incorporate the semantic information from RGB data to obtain a new form of data, pseudo-laser data, which combines the advantages of visual information and laser information. Compared to traditional laser data that only contains the one-dimensional distance information captured at a certain height, our proposed pseudo-laser data encodes the depth information and semantic information within the image, which makes our method more effective for irregular obstacles. Besides, we adaptively add noise to the laser data during the training stage to increase the robustness of our model in the real world, due to the estimated depth information is not accurate. Experimental results show that our framework achieves state-of-the-art performance in several unseen virtual and real-world scenarios.

From Two to One: A New Scene Text Recognizer with Visual Language Modeling Network

In this paper, we abandon the dominant complex language model and rethink the linguistic learning process in the scene text recognition. Different from previous methods considering the visual and linguistic information in two separate structures, we propose a Visual Language Modeling Network (VisionLAN), which views the visual and linguistic information as a union by directly enduing the vision model with language capability. Specially, we introduce the text recognition of character-wise occluded feature maps in the training stage. Such operation guides the vision model to use not only the visual texture of characters, but also the linguistic information in visual context for recognition when the visual cues are confused (e.g. occlusion, noise, etc.). As the linguistic information is acquired along with visual features without the need of extra language model, VisionLAN significantly improves the speed by 39% and adaptively considers the linguistic information to enhance the visual features for accurate recognition. Furthermore, an Occlusion Scene Text (OST) dataset is proposed to evaluate the performance on the case of missing character-wise visual cues. The state of-the-art results on several benchmarks prove our effectiveness. Code and dataset are available at https://github.com/wangyuxin87/VisionLAN.

Information retrieval and eigenstates coalescence in a non-Hermitian quantum system with anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry

Non-Hermitian systems with parity-time reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$) or anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry have attracted a wide range of interest owing to their unique characteristics and counterintuitive phenomena. One of the most extraordinary features is the presence of an exception point (EP), across which a phase transition with spontaneously broken $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry takes place. We implement a Floquet Hamiltonian of a single qubit with anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry by periodically driving a dissipative quantum system of a single trapped ion. With stroboscopic emission and quantum state tomography, we obtain the time evolution of density matrix for an arbitrary initial state, and directly demonstrate information retrieval, eigenstates coalescence, and topological energy spectra as unique features of non-Hermitian systems.

Monocular Visual Analysis for Electronic Line Calling of Tennis Games

Electronic Line Calling is an auxiliary referee system used for tennis matches based on binocular vision technology. While ELC has been widely used, there are still many problems, such as complex installation and maintenance, high cost and etc. We propose a monocular vision technology based ELC method. The method has the following steps. First, locate the tennis ball's trajectory. We propose a multistage tennis ball positioning approach combining background subtraction and color area filtering. Then we propose a bouncing point prediction method by minimizing the fitting loss of the uncertain point. Finally, we find out whether the bouncing point of the ball is out of bounds or not according to the relative position between the bouncing point and the court side line in the two dimensional image. We collected and tagged 394 samples with an accuracy rate of 99.4%, and 81.8% of the 11 samples with bouncing points. The experimental results show that our method is feasible to judge if a ball is out of the court with monocular vision and significantly reduce complex installation and costs of ELC system with binocular vision.

In this technical report, we present our solution of KDD Cup 2021 OGB Large-Scale Challenge - PCQM4M-LSC Track. We adopt Graphormer and ExpC as our basic models. We train each model by 8-fold cross-validation, and additionally train two Graphormer models on the union of training and validation sets with different random seeds. For final submission, we use a naive ensemble for these 18 models by taking average of their outputs. Using our method, our team MachineLearning achieved 0.1200 MAE on test set, which won the first place in KDD Cup graph prediction track.

A Survey of Transformers

Transformers have achieved great success in many artificial intelligence fields, such as natural language processing, computer vision, and audio processing. Therefore, it is natural to attract lots of interest from academic and industry researchers. Up to the present, a great variety of Transformer variants (a.k.a. X-formers) have been proposed, however, a systematic and comprehensive literature review on these Transformer variants is still missing. In this survey, we provide a comprehensive review of various X-formers. We first briefly introduce the vanilla Transformer and then propose a new taxonomy of X-formers. Next, we introduce the various X-formers from three perspectives: architectural modification, pre-training, and applications. Finally, we outline some potential directions for future research.

Optimizing Fitness-For-Use of Differentially Private Linear Queries

In practice, differentially private data releases are designed to support a variety of applications. A data release is fit for use if it meets target accuracy requirements for each application. In this paper, we consider the problem of answering linear queries under differential privacy subject to per-query accuracy constraints. Existing practical frameworks like the matrix mechanism do not provide such fine-grained control (they optimize total error, which allows some query answers to be more accurate than necessary, at the expense of other queries that become no longer useful). Thus, we design a fitness-for-use strategy that adds privacy-preserving Gaussian noise to query answers. The covariance structure of the noise is optimized to meet the fine-grained accuracy requirements while minimizing the cost to privacy.

Charge order dynamics in underdoped La$\mathbf{_{1.6-\textit{x}}}$Nd$\mathbf{_{0.4}}$Sr$\mathbf{_\textit{x}}$CuO$\mathbf{_{4}}$ revealed by electric pulses

The dynamics of the charge-order domains has been investigated in La$_{1.48}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_{4}$, a prototypical stripe-ordered cuprate, using pulsed current injection. We first identify the regime in which nonthermal effects dominate over simple Joule heating, and then demonstrate that, for small enough perturbation, pulsed current injection allows access to nonthermally-induced resistive metastable states. The results are consistent with pinning of the fluctuating charge order, with fluctuations being most pronounced at the charge-order onset temperature. The nonequilibrium effects are revealed only when the transition is approached from the charge-ordered phase. Our experiment establishes pulsed current injection as a viable and effective method for probing the charge-order dynamics in various other materials.

A Two-Stage Attentive Network for Single Image Super-Resolution

Recently, deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been widely explored in single image super-resolution (SISR) and contribute remarkable progress. However, most of the existing CNNs-based SISR methods do not adequately explore contextual information in the feature extraction stage and pay little attention to the final high-resolution (HR) image reconstruction step, hence hindering the desired SR performance. To address the above two issues, in this paper, we propose a two-stage attentive network (TSAN) for accurate SISR in a coarse-to-fine manner. Specifically, we design a novel multi-context attentive block (MCAB) to make the network focus on more informative contextual features. Moreover, we present an essential refined attention block (RAB) which could explore useful cues in HR space for reconstructing fine-detailed HR image. Extensive evaluations on four benchmark datasets demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed TSAN in terms of quantitative metrics and visual effects. Code is available at https://github.com/Jee-King/TSAN.

Read Like Humans: Autonomous, Bidirectional and Iterative Language Modeling for Scene Text Recognition

Linguistic knowledge is of great benefit to scene text recognition. However, how to effectively model linguistic rules in end-to-end deep networks remains a research challenge. In this paper, we argue that the limited capacity of language models comes from: 1) implicitly language modeling; 2) unidirectional feature representation; and 3) language model with noise input. Correspondingly, we propose an autonomous, bidirectional and iterative ABINet for scene text recognition. Firstly, the autonomous suggests to block gradient flow between vision and language models to enforce explicitly language modeling. Secondly, a novel bidirectional cloze network (BCN) as the language model is proposed based on bidirectional feature representation. Thirdly, we propose an execution manner of iterative correction for language model which can effectively alleviate the impact of noise input. Additionally, based on the ensemble of iterative predictions, we propose a self-training method which can learn from unlabeled images effectively. Extensive experiments indicate that ABINet has superiority on low-quality images and achieves state-of-the-art results on several mainstream benchmarks. Besides, the ABINet trained with ensemble self-training shows promising improvement in realizing human-level recognition. Code is available at https://github.com/FangShancheng/ABINet.

Multi-scale Information Assembly for Image Matting

Image matting is a long-standing problem in computer graphics and vision, mostly identified as the accurate estimation of the foreground in input images. We argue that the foreground objects can be represented by different-level information, including the central bodies, large-grained boundaries, refined details, etc. Based on this observation, in this paper, we propose a multi-scale information assembly framework (MSIA-matte) to pull out high-quality alpha mattes from single RGB images. Technically speaking, given an input image, we extract advanced semantics as our subject content and retain initial CNN features to encode different-level foreground expression, then combine them by our well-designed information assembly strategy. Extensive experiments can prove the effectiveness of the proposed MSIA-matte, and we can achieve state-of-the-art performance compared to most existing matting networks.
