SiamFC++: Towards Robust and Accurate Visual Tracking with Target Estimation Guidelines

Visual tracking problem demands to efficiently perform robust classification and accurate target state estimation over a given target at the same time. Former methods have proposed various ways of target state estimation, yet few of them took the particularity of the visual tracking problem itself into consideration. After a careful analysis, we propose a set of practical guidelines of target state estimation for high-performance generic object tracker design. Following these guidelines, we design our Fully Convolutional Siamese tracker++ (SiamFC++) by introducing both classification and target state estimation branch(G1), classification score without ambiguity(G2), tracking without prior knowledge(G3), and estimation quality score(G4). Extensive analysis and ablation studies demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed guidelines. Without bells and whistles, our SiamFC++ tracker achieves state-of-the-art performance on five challenging benchmarks(OTB2015, VOT2018, LaSOT, GOT-10k, TrackingNet), which proves both the tracking and generalization ability of the tracker. Particularly, on the large-scale TrackingNet dataset, SiamFC++ achieves a previously unseen AUC score of 75.4 while running at over 90 FPS, which is far above the real-time requirement. Towards Fairness in Visual Recognition: Effective Strategies for Bias Mitigation

Computer vision models learn to perform a task by capturing relevant statistics from training data. It has been shown that models learn spurious age, gender, and race correlations when trained for seemingly unrelated tasks like activity recognition or image captioning. Various mitigation techniques have been presented to prevent models from utilizing or learning such biases. However, there has been little systematic comparison between these techniques. We design a simple but surprisingly effective visual recognition benchmark for studying bias mitigation. Using this benchmark, we provide a thorough analysis of a wide range of techniques. We highlight the shortcomings of popular adversarial training approaches for bias mitigation, propose a simple but similarly effective alternative to the inference-time Reducing Bias Amplification method of Zhao et al., and design a domain-independent training technique that outperforms all other methods. Finally, we validate our findings on the attribute classification task in the CelebA dataset, where attribute presence is known to be correlated with the gender of people in the image, and demonstrate that the proposed technique is effective at mitigating real-world gender bias.

Value of Information Analysis via Active Learning and Knowledge Sharing in Error-Controlled Adaptive Kriging

Large uncertainties in many phenomena have challenged decision making. Collecting additional information to better characterize reducible uncertainties is among decision alternatives. Value of information (VoI) analysis is a mathematical decision framework that quantifies expected potential benefits of new data and assists with optimal allocation of resources for information collection. However, analysis of VoI is computational very costly because of the underlying Bayesian inference especially for equality-type information. This paper proposes the first surrogate-based framework for VoI analysis. Instead of modeling the limit state functions describing events of interest for decision making, which is commonly pursued in surrogate model-based reliability methods, the proposed framework models system responses. This approach affords sharing equality-type information from observations among surrogate models to update likelihoods of multiple events of interest. Moreover, two knowledge sharing schemes called model and training points sharing are proposed to most effectively take advantage of the knowledge offered by costly model evaluations. Both schemes are integrated with an error rate-based adaptive training approach to efficiently generate accurate Kriging surrogate models. The proposed VoI analysis framework is applied for an optimal decision-making problem involving load testing of a truss bridge. While state-of-the-art methods based on importance sampling and adaptive Kriging Monte Carlo simulation are unable to solve this problem, the proposed method is shown to offer accurate and robust estimates of VoI with a limited number of model evaluations. Therefore, the proposed method facilitates the application of VoI for complex decision problems.

RepChain: A Reputation-based Secure, Fast and High Incentive Blockchain System via Sharding

In today's blockchain system, designing a secure and high throughput blockchain on par with a centralized payment system is a difficult task. Sharding is one of the most worthwhile emerging technologies for improving the system throughput while maintain high security level. However, previous sharding related designs have two main limitations: Firstly, the throughput of their random-based sharding system is not high enough as they did not leverage the heterogeneity among validators. Secondly, to design an incentive mechanism to promote cooperation could incur a huge overhead on their system. In this paper, we propose RepChain, a reputation-based secure and fast blockchain system via sharding, which also provides high incentive to stimulate node cooperation. RepChain utilizes reputation to explicitly characterize the heterogeneity among the validators and lay the foundation for the incentive mechanism. We propose a new double-chain architecture which includes transaction chain and reputation chain. For transaction chain, a Raft-based synchronous consensus that can achieve high throughput has been presented. For reputation chain, the synchronous Byzantine fault tolerance that combines collective signing has been utilized to achieve a consensus on both reputation score and the related transaction blocks. It supports a high throughput transaction chain with moderate generation speed. Moreover, we propose a reputation-based sharding and leader selection scheme. To analyze the security of RepChain, we propose a recursive formula to calculate the epoch security within only O(km^2) time. Furthermore, we implement and evaluate RepChain on the Amazon Web Service platform. The results show our solution can enhance both throughout and security level of the existing sharding-based blockchain system.

REAK: Reliability analysis through Error rate-based Adaptive Kriging

As models in various fields are becoming more complex, associated computational demands have been increasing significantly. Reliability analysis for these systems when failure probabilities are small is significantly challenging, requiring a large number of costly simulations. To address this challenge, this paper introduces Reliability analysis through Error rate-based Adaptive Kriging (REAK). An extension of the Central Limit Theorem based on Lindeberg condition is adopted here to derive the distribution of the number of design samples with wrong sign estimate and subsequently determine the maximum error rate for failure probability estimates. This error rate enables optimal establishment of effective sampling regions at each stage of an adaptive scheme for strategic generation of design samples. Moreover, it facilitates setting a target accuracy for failure probability estimation, which is used as stopping criterion for reliability analysis. These capabilities together can significantly reduce the number of calls to sophisticated, computationally demanding models. The application of REAK for four examples with varying extent of nonlinearity and dimension is presented. Results indicate that REAK is able to reduce the computational demand by as high as 50% compared to state-of-the-art methods of Adaptive Kriging with Monte Carlo Simulation (AK-MCS) and Improved Sequential Kriging Reliability Analysis (ISKRA).

AniCode: Authoring Coded Artifacts for Network-Free Personalized Animations

Time-based media (videos, synthetic animations, and virtual reality experiences) are used for communication, in applications such as manufacturers explaining the operation of a new appliance to consumers and scientists illustrating the basis of a new conclusion. However, authoring time-based media that are effective and personalized for the viewer remains a challenge. We introduce AniCode, a novel framework for authoring and consuming time-based media. An author encodes a video animation in a printed code, and affixes the code to an object. A consumer uses a mobile application to capture an image of the object and code, and to generate a video presentation on the fly. Importantly, AniCode presents the video personalized in the consumer's visual context. Our system is designed to be low cost and easy to use. By not requiring an internet connection, and through animations that decode correctly only in the intended context, AniCode enhances privacy of communication using time-based media. Animation schemes in the system include a series of 2D and 3D geometric transformations, color transformation, and annotation. We demonstrate the AniCode framework with sample applications from a wide range of domains, including product "how to" examples, cultural heritage, education, creative art, and design. We evaluate the ease of use and effectiveness of our system with a user study.

Accurate Semidefinite Programming Models for Optimal Power Flow in Distribution Systems

In this paper, we develop semidefinite programming (SDP) models aimed at solving optimal power flow (OPF) problems in distribution systems. We propose two models: the symmetrical SDP model which modifies the existing BFM-SDP model. Then based on the symmetrical SDP model, we develop a voltage regulation model that solves OPF problems with binding voltage constraints. To evaluate the accuracy of our proposed OPF models, we rely on OpenDSS, a power flow solver, to generate power flow solutions as the benchmarks. Comprehensive case studies are conducted showing our SDP models have better numerical stability and yield more accurate results than existing approaches
