A muon scattering tomography system based on high spatial resolution scintillating detector

Cosmic ray muon scattering tomography (MST) is an imaging technique that utilizes muon scattering in matter to inspect high-Z materials non-destructively, without requiring an artificial radiation source. This method offers significant potential for applications in border security and long-term monitoring of nuclear materials. In this study, we developed a high-precision plastic-scintillator-based position-sensitive detector with a spatial resolution of 0.09 times the strip pitch. A fully functional, full-scale imaging system was then constructed using four layers of such XY position-sensitive detectors, each with an effective area of 53 cm x 53 cm. This paper details the following key contributions: the Geant4-simulated design and optimization of the imaging system, the fabrication, assembly, and testing of the detectors, and an evaluation of the imaging performance of the completed system.

FeynmanBench: Benchmarking Multimodal LLMs on Diagrammatic Physics Reasoning

Current multimodal benchmarks for scientific reasoning primarily evaluate local information extraction -- models recognize symbols and values and then perform textual inference. They do not assess whether models can reason over the global structural properties of formal diagrams, such as topology, conservation constraints, and the consistent mapping between visual patterns and algebraic expressions. We introduce FeynmanBench, a benchmark of over 2,000 tasks centered on Feynman diagrams spanning the electromagnetic, weak, and strong interactions of the Standard Model. Each instance couples a diagram image with minimal textual conventions and requires models to recover the full physical content -- vertex inventory, propagator types, topological connectivity, momentum routing, and the complete scattering amplitude. An automated generation and verification pipeline produces the diagrams, annotations, and reference answers under standardized rules. Evaluating 19 state-of-the-art multimodal LLMs, we find a consistent failure pattern: models achieve 70--95\% on local recognition (vertex and propagator identification) but collapse to 13--17\% on topological reconstruction (CP3), and near zero on full algebraic derivation (CP5). FeynmanBench offers a controlled testbed for multimodal reasoning over formal scientific diagrams and highlights fundamental limitations of current architectures in topology-sensitive scientific reasoning.

SPM-Bench: Benchmarking Large Language Models for Scanning Probe Microscopy

As LLMs achieved breakthroughs in general reasoning, their proficiency in specialized scientific domains reveals pronounced gaps in existing benchmarks due to data contamination, insufficient complexity, and prohibitive human labor costs. Here we present SPM-Bench, an original, PhD-level multimodal benchmark specifically designed for scanning probe microscopy (SPM). We propose a fully automated data synthesis pipeline that ensures both high authority and low-cost. By employing Anchor-Gated Sieve (AGS) technology, we efficiently extract high-value image-text pairs from arXiv and journal papers published between 2023 and 2025. Through a hybrid cloud-local architecture where VLMs return only spatial coordinates "llbox" for local high-fidelity cropping, our pipeline achieves extreme token savings while maintaining high dataset purity. To accurately and objectively evaluate the performance of the LLMs, we introduce the Strict Imperfection Penalty F1 (SIP-F1) score. This metric not only establishes a rigorous capability hierarchy but also, for the first time, quantifies model "personalities" (Conservative, Aggressive, Gambler, or Wise). By correlating these results with model-reported confidence and perceived difficulty, we expose the true reasoning boundaries of current AI in complex physical scenarios. These insights establish SPM-Bench as a generalizable paradigm for automated scientific data synthesis.

BilliardPhys-Bench: Benchmarking Physical Reasoning and Visual Dynamics of Multimodal LLMs

Current multimodal models handle static image recognition well, but intuitive physical reasoning remains a weakness. Predicting how objects will move and interact from a single image is still difficult for these systems. We present BilliardPhys-Bench, a benchmark for physical reasoning in synthetic billiards environments. Its procedural engine generates randomized scenarios with friction and elastic collisions. The benchmark tests three abilities: (1) predicting ball-to-ball collisions, (2) reasoning about wall bounces, and (3) estimating final ball positions after motion stops. We evaluate recent MLLMs from the GPT, Claude, Gemini, and Qwen families. Performance drops as simulation time increases and scene geometry grows more complex. We also observe a consistent failure mode we call "stasis bias": when the correct physical outcome is harder to infer, models tend to predict no interaction. These findings show where current MLLMs break down on visual dynamics and point toward the need for better physical inductive biases in multimodal architectures.

EgoIntrospect: An Egocentric Dataset and Benchmark for User-Centric Internal State Reasoning

Despite extensive efforts on egocentric video datasets and benchmarks, understanding users' internal states, which is crucial for enabling seamless AI assistant experiences, remains largely overlooked. In this work, we introduce EgoIntrospect, the first egocentric dataset captured in user-driven scenarios with self-annotations that explicitly reveal users' interactive intentions with AI assistants. EgoIntrospect was collected using a cross-device setup, providing synchronized video, audio, gaze, motion, and physiological signals. It consists of 180 hours of recordings from 60 subjects, with an average recording duration of 3 hours per subject. Leveraging EgoIntrospect, we formalize a suite of tasks centered on user internal states, including affective experience, interactive intent, and cognitive memory. We further process the annotations to construct benchmarks that evaluate the ability of modern multimodal large language models to reason about users' internal states from egocentric observations. Experiments on our benchmark suggest that existing multimodal large language models struggle to effectively leverage multimodal signals to infer users' subjective internal states. The dataset and annotations will be made publicly available to advance research in egocentric vision and wearable AI assistants. Project page: https://ego-introspect.github.io/

Finding the Balance Rate of Uncertain Signed Graphs

Signed graphs are widely used to analyze complex systems such as social, political, and biological networks. The notion of balance, a key concept of signed graphs, reflects the stability of relationships. While it has been extensively studied in deterministic graphs, real-world networks often exhibit uncertainty in their connections, which traditional approaches struggle to address. To bridge this gap, we introduce the concept of balance rate, a metric for quantifying the degree of balance in uncertain signed graphs, and prove that computing it exactly is NP-hard, motivating the need for efficient estimation methods. We propose a novel Rao-Blackwellized spanning-tree estimator that achieves near-linear time complexity per sample by leveraging graph decomposition and structural properties. We also construct asymptotically justified confidence intervals using the Delta method. Experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our approach, enabling scalable balance analysis in uncertain signed graphs.

Adaptive Optical Multi-Spectral Matrix Approach for Label-free High-resolution Imaging through Complex Scattering Media

Imaging through complex scattering media is severely limited by aberrations and scattering which obscure images and reduce resolution. Confocal and temporal gatings partly filter out multiple scattering but are severely degraded by wavefront distortions. Adaptive optics restore resolution by correcting low-order aberrations and matrix-based imaging enables more complex wavefront corrections. However, they struggle to undo high-order aberrations under strong scattering, preventing imaging at greater depths. To address these challenges, we present Scattering Matrix Tomography (SMT), an approach that makes full use of the wavefront engineering capability of scattering matrix and extreme adaptive optics. SMT reformulates imaging through complex media as a numerical optimization and employs Zernike-mode wavefront regularization and coarse-to-fine nonconvex optimization strategy to reverse severe aberrations, enabling noninvasive high-resolution volumetric imaging in multiple scattering regime. Based on the spectrally-resolved matrix measurement, SMT achieves a depth-over-resolution ratio above 900 beneath $ex~vivo$ mouse brain tissue and volumetric imaging at over three transport mean free paths inside an opaque colloid, where conventional methods fail to correct strong aberrations under these challenging conditions. SMT is noninvasive, label-free, and works both inside and outside the scattering media, making it suitable for various applications, including medical imaging, biological science, device inspection, and colloidal physics.

ReCoG: Relational and Compact Context Graph Learning for Few-shot Molecular Property Prediction

Few-shot molecular property prediction (FSMPP) is essential in drug discovery and materials design, where high-quality labeled data are often scarce and expensive to obtain. Despite the promising performance of existing methods, especially context-aware methods, they still face two-fold severe challenges with \textit{insufficient structural context modeling} \& \textit{redundant auxiliary context learning}, leading to inadequate context graph exploration and ineffective information utilization for effective molecule representation learning. To address these, in this paper, we propose a novel framework by learning on \textbf{\underline{Re}}lational and \textbf{\underline{C}}ompact c\textbf{\underline{o}}ntext \textbf{\underline{G}}raph, named \textbf{\method}, to comprehensively exploit the context graph for expressive molecular property prediction. Specifically, the proposed \method contains two core modules: a \textbf{(1) cross-property relational learning module} to better model the structural and relational context information, and a \textbf{(2) context graph information bottleneck module} to adaptively suppress irrelevant auxiliary signals for compact context information utilization, followed by a detailed theoretical demonstration regarding the importance of joint relational and compact knowledge extraction in context graphs.

Fast and Accurate Prediction of Lattice Thermal Conductivity via Machine Learning Surrogates

The appearance of generative models has opened vast chemical spaces in the design of functional materials. Although machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) have substantially accelerated phonon calculations, high-fidelity prediction of lattice thermal conductivity \k{appa}lat still requires accurate treatment of anharmonic interactions, which remains a key challenge for existing potentials across novel chemical spaces. To address this challenge, we present a comprehensive benchmark of 15 surrogate models for predicting \k{appa}lat using the Phonix database, which contains 6,966 entries with anharmonic phonon properties derived from first-principles calculations. Firstly, We categorize these surrogate models into three distinct groups: Physical-informed feature descriptors combined with ML models, end-to-end deep neural networks, and pre-trained MLIP-embeddings combined with ML models. By evaluating model performance across random, space-group disjoint (testing generalization to unseen crystal symmetries), and Out-Of-Distribution splits (OOD dataset that testing extrapolation to property regimes beyond the training range) based on \k{appa}lat, we probe both interpolation and exploration capabilities. Our results reveal that MLIP-embedded models excel in interpolation within well-sampled regions, deep neural network models especially ALiEGNN demonstrate superior robustness in OOD regimes critical for discovering novel low-\k{appa}lat. Additionally, we find a systematic degradation in performance when the structural representation is reduced. Although surrogate models exhibit lower accuracy than direct simulations using first-principles calculation, they reduce computational costs by orders of magnitude, enabling efficient high-throughput screening of thermoelectric materials with minimal loss in generative design workflows.

SLOPE: Optimistic Potential Landscape Shaping for Model-based Reinforcement Learning

Model-based reinforcement learning (MBRL) is sample-efficient but struggles in sparse reward settings. A critical bottleneck arises from the lack of informative gradients in sparse settings, where standard reward models often yield flat landscapes that struggle to guide planning. To address this challenge, we propose Shaping Landscapes with Optimistic Potential Estimates (SLOPE), a novel framework that shifts reward modeling from predicting sparse scalars to constructing informative potential landscapes. SLOPE employs optimistic distributional regression to estimate high-confidence upper bounds, which amplifies rare success signals and ensures sufficient exploration gradients. Evaluations on 30+ tasks across 5 benchmarks and real-world robotic deployments, demonstrate that SLOPE consistently outperforms leading baselines in fully sparse, semi-sparse, and dense rewards.

RetimeGS: Continuous-Time Reconstruction of 4D Gaussian Splatting

Temporal retiming, the ability to reconstruct and render dynamic scenes at arbitrary timestamps, is crucial for applications such as slow-motion playback, temporal editing, and post-production. However, most existing 4D Gaussian Splatting (4DGS) methods overfit at discrete frame indices but struggle to represent continuous-time frames, leading to ghosting artifacts when interpolating between timestamps. We identify this limitation as a form of temporal aliasing and propose RetimeGS, a simple yet effective 4DGS representation that explicitly defines the temporal behavior of the 3D Gaussian and mitigates temporal aliasing. To achieve smooth and consistent interpolation, we incorporate optical flow-guided initialization and supervision, triple-rendering supervision, and other targeted strategies. Together, these components enable ghost-free, temporally coherent rendering even under large motions. Experiments on datasets featuring fast motion, non-rigid deformation, and severe occlusions demonstrate that RetimeGS achieves superior quality and coherence over state-of-the-art methods.

A modular approach to achieve multistationarity using AND-gates

Systems of differential equations have been used to model biological systems such as gene and neural networks. A problem of particular interest is to understand the number of stable steady states. Here we propose conjunctive networks (systems of differential equations equations created using AND gates) to achieve any desired number of stable steady states. Our approach uses combinatorial tools to predict the number of stable steady states from the structure of the wiring diagram. Furthermore, AND gates have been successfully engineered by experimentalists for gene networks, so our results provide a modular approach to design gene networks that achieve arbitrary number of phenotypes.

Adaptive Serverless Resource Management via Slot-Survival Prediction and Event-Driven Lifecycle Control

Serverless computing eliminates infrastructure management overhead but introduces significant challenges regarding cold start latency and resource utilization. Traditional static resource allocation often leads to inefficiencies under variable workloads, resulting in performance degradation or excessive costs. This paper presents an adaptive engineering framework that optimizes serverless performance through event-driven architecture and probabilistic modeling. We propose a dual-strategy mechanism that dynamically adjusts idle durations and employs an intelligent request waiting strategy based on slot survival predictions. By leveraging sliding window aggregation and asynchronous processing, our system proactively manages resource lifecycles. Experimental results show that our approach reduces cold starts by up to 51.2% and improves cost-efficiency by nearly 2x compared to baseline methods in multi-cloud environments.

Higher Period Integrals and Derivatives of L-functions

We propose a geometric framework to produce a formula relating higher period integrals to higher central derivatives of $L$-functions over function fields, extending the framework of relative Langlands duality à la Ben-Zvi--Sakellaridis--Venkatesh to higher derivatives. For a strongly tempered affine smooth $G$-variety $X$, we give a geometric construction of the action of $L$-observables on the geometric period integral of a Hecke eigensheaf. By taking a suitable version of Frobenius trace of this action, we recover higher central derivatives of the $L$-function attached to the dual symplectic representation. As an application, in the Rankin--Selberg case $(\mathrm{GL}_n\times\mathrm{GL}_{n-1},\mathrm{GL}_{n-1})$, we obtain a formula for higher derivatives of the Rankin--Selberg $L$-function. This provides a conceptual generalization of Yun--Zhang's higher Gross--Zagier formula to higher-dimensional spherical varieties.

GardenDesigner: Encoding Aesthetic Principles into Jiangnan Garden Construction via a Chain of Agents

Jiangnan gardens, a prominent style of Chinese classical gardens, hold great potential as digital assets for film and game production and digital tourism. However, manual modeling of Jiangnan gardens heavily relies on expert experience for layout design and asset creation, making the process time-consuming. To address this gap, we propose GardenDesigner, a novel framework that encodes aesthetic principles for Jiangnan garden construction and integrates a chain of agents based on procedural modeling. The water-centric terrain and explorative pathway rules are applied by terrain distribution and road generation agents. Selection and spatial layout of garden assets follow the aesthetic and cultural constraints. Consequently, we propose asset selection and layout optimization agents to select and arrange objects for each area in the garden. Additionally, we introduce GardenVerse for Jiangnan garden construction, including expert-annotated garden knowledge to enhance the asset arrangement process. To enable interaction and editing, we develop an interactive interface and tools in Unity, in which non-expert users can construct Jiangnan gardens via text input within one minute. Experiments and human evaluations demonstrate that GardenDesigner can generate diverse and aesthetically pleasing Jiangnan gardens. Do VLMs Perceive or Recall? Probing Visual Perception vs. Memory with Classic Visual Illusions

Large Vision-Language Models (VLMs) often answer classic visual illusions "correctly" on original images, yet persist with the same responses when illusion factors are inverted, even though the visual change is obvious to humans. This raises a fundamental question: do VLMs perceive visual changes or merely recall memorized patterns? While several studies have noted this phenomenon, the underlying causes remain unclear. To move from observations to systematic understanding, this paper introduces VI-Probe, a controllable visual-illusion framework with graded perturbations and matched visual controls (without illusion inducer) that disentangles visually grounded perception from language-driven recall. Unlike prior work that focuses on averaged accuracy, we measure stability and sensitivity using Polarity-Flip Consistency, Template Fixation Index, and an illusion multiplier normalized against matched controls. Experiments across different families reveal that response persistence arises from heterogeneous causes rather than a single mechanism. For instance, GPT-5 exhibits memory override, Claude-Opus-4.1 shows perception-memory competition, while Qwen variants suggest visual-processing limits. Our findings challenge single-cause views and motivate probing-based evaluation that measures both knowledge and sensitivity to controlled visual change. Enhancing Spin Coherence of Optically-Addressed Molecular Qubit by Nuclear Spin Hyperpolarization

Optically addressable molecular triplet spins provide a chemically tunable platform for quantum application, but their coherence is often limited by interactions with surrounding spin baths. Here we demonstrate controlled suppression of nuclear-bath-induced decoherence in photoexcited triplet spins of pentacene co-crystallized in high-purity naphthalene single crystals. By hyperpolarizing the proton spin bath through triplet dynamic nuclear polarization (triplet-DNP), magnetic noise generated by the nuclear spins is suppressed, leading to an extension of the electron spin transverse coherence time. Experimentally, we observe a 25\% enhancement of the spin-echo decay time with $60\%$ polarization of the proton spin bath. The measured scaling of the spin-echo decay time ($T_2$) with nuclear polarization quantitatively follows the predicted dependence derived from the polarization-controlled nuclear second moment. Both the enhancement and the absolute value of the coherence time are quantitatively reproduced by cluster correlation expansion (CCE) simulations. These results establish nuclear spin hyperpolarization as a general and actively tunable approach to engineering coherence in molecular qubits. This work provides a broadly applicable design framework for high-coherence molecular and solid-state spin systems.

InstanceAnimator: Multi-Instance Sketch Video Colorization

We propose InstanceAnimator, a novel Diffusion Transformer framework for multi-instance sketch video colorization. Existing methods suffer from three core limitations: inflexible user control due to heavy reliance on single reference frames, poor instance controllability leading to misalignment in multi-character scenarios, and degraded detail fidelity in fine-grained regions. To address these challenges, we introduce three corresponding innovations. First, a Canvas Guidance Condition eliminates workflow fragmentation by allowing free placement of reference elements and background, enabling unprecedented user flexibility. Second, an Instance Matching Mechanism resolves misalignment by integrating instance features with the sketches, ensuring precise control over multiple characters. Third, an Adaptive Decoupled Control Module enhances detail fidelity by injecting semantic features from characters, backgrounds, and text conditions into the diffusion process. Extensive experiments demonstrate that InstanceAnimator achieves superior multi-instance colorization with enhanced user control, high visual quality, and strong instance consistency.
