Proactive Human-Machine Conversation with Explicit Conversation Goals

Though great progress has been made for human-machine conversation, current dialogue system is still in its infancy: it usually converses passively and utters words more as a matter of response, rather than on its own initiatives. In this paper, we take a radical step towards building a human-like conversational agent: endowing it with the ability of proactively leading the conversation (introducing a new topic or maintaining the current topic). To facilitate the development of such conversation systems, we create a new dataset named DuConv where one acts as a conversation leader and the other acts as the follower. The leader is provided with a knowledge graph and asked to sequentially change the discussion topics, following the given conversation goal, and meanwhile keep the dialogue as natural and engaging as possible. DuConv enables a very challenging task as the model needs to both understand dialogue and plan over the given knowledge graph. We establish baseline results on this dataset (about 270K utterances and 30k dialogues) using several state-of-the-art models. Experimental results show that dialogue models that plan over the knowledge graph can make full use of related knowledge to generate more diverse multi-turn conversations. The baseline systems along with the dataset are publicly available

A dual-species magneto-optical trap for lithium and strontium atoms

We present a machine built for experiments with ultracold mixtures of strontium and lithium atoms. The machine includes a science vacuum chamber and the relevant laser systems for cooling and trapping the atoms. With this machine, we realize a D2-line compressed magneto-optical trap (MOT) for ${^6}$Li and a narrow-linewidth 689-nm MOT for $^{84}$Sr, obtaining ~$10^9$ ${^6}$Li atoms at 700 $μ$K and ~$10^7$ $^{84}$Sr atoms at 1.8 $μ$K. Such a dual-species MOT provides an ideal starting point for realizing double degenerate mixtures of $^6$Li and Sr atoms.

The effect of spots on the luminosity spread of the Pleiades

Cool spots on the surface of magnetically-active stars modulate their observed brightnesses and temperatures, thereby affecting the stellar locus on the H-R diagram. Recent high precision space-based photometric surveys reveal the rotational modulation from spots on stars in young clusters, including K2 monitoring of the 125-Myr-old Pleiades cluster. However, lightcurves reveal only the asymmetries in the visible spot distributions rather than the total sizes of spots on stellar surfaces, which causes a discrepancy between the spot coverage measured by photometric and spectroscopic observations. In this paper, we simulate photometric variability introduced by randomly-distributed starspots on a 125-Myr-old coeval cluster. Our simulation results show that randomly distributed small spots on the stellar surface would explain this discrepancy that the photometric observations only reveal 10% to 40% of the spot coverage measured by spectra. The colors and luminosities of photospheres are modeled for a range of photospheric temperature, spot coverage, and spot temperature. The colors and luminosities of a simulated population are then compared to the luminosity spread of Pleiades members, excluding the 25% of candidates that are identified as non-members with Gaia DR2 astrometry. The observed luminosities of Pleiades members have a standard deviation of 0.05 dex, which could be entirely explained by spots with a star-to-star standard deviation of spot coverage of 10%, but with an average coverage area that is not well constrained.

Star-disk interactions in multi-band photometric monitoring of the classical T Tauri star GI Tau

The variability of young stellar objects is mostly driven by star-disk interactions. In long-term photometric monitoring of the accreting T Tauri star GI Tau, we detect extinction events with typical depths of $ΔV \sim 2.5$ mag that last for days-to-months and often appear to occur stochastically. In 2014 - 2015, extinctions that repeated with a quasi-period of 21 days over several months is the first empirical evidence of slow warps predicted from MHD simulations to form at a few stellar radii away from the central star. The reddening is consistent with $R_V=3.85\pm0.5$ and, along with an absence of diffuse interstellar bands, indicates that some dust processing has occurred in the disk. The 2015 -- 2016 multi-band lightcurve includes variations in spot coverage, extinction, and accretion, each of which results in different traces in color-magnitude diagrams. This lightcurve is initially dominated by a month-long extinction event and return to the unocculted brightness. The subsequent light-curve then features spot modulation with a 7.03 day period, punctuated by brief, randomly-spaced extinction events. The accretion rate measured from $U$-band photometry ranges from $1.3\times10^{-8}$ to $1.1\times10^{-10}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ (excluding the highest and lowest 5% of high- and low- accretion rate outliers), with an average of $4.7 \times 10^{-9}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. A total of 50% of the mass is accreted during bursts of $>12.8\times10^{-9}$ M$_\odot$ yr${^{-1}}$, which indicates limitations on analyses of disk evolution using single-epoch accretion rates.

Pulsations and Period Variations of the $δ$ Scuti Star AN Lyncis in a possible three-body system

Observations for the $δ$ Scuti star AN Lyn have been made between 2008 and 2016 with the 85-cm telescope at Xinglong station of National Astronomical Observatories of China, the 84-cm telescope at SPM Observatory of Mexico and the Nanshan One meter Wide field Telescope of Xinjiang Observatory of China. Data in $V$ in 50 nights and in $R$ in 34 nights are obtained in total. The bi-site observations from both Xinglong Station and SPM Observatory in 2014 are analyzed with Fourier Decomposition to detect pulsation frequencies. Two independent frequencies are resolved, including one non-radial mode. A number of stellar model tracks are constructed with the MESA code and the fit of frequencies leads to the best-fit model with the stellar mass of $M = 1.70 \pm 0.05~\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ , the metallicity abundance of $Z = 0.020 \pm 0.001$, the age of $1.33 \pm 0.01$ billion years and the period change rate $1/P\cdot \mathrm{d}P/\mathrm{d}t =1.06 \times 10^{-9} ~\mathrm{yr^{-1}} $, locating the star at the evolutionary stage close to the terminal age main sequence (TAMS). The O-C diagram provides the period change rate of $1/P \cdot \mathrm{d}P /\mathrm{d}t =4.5(8)\times10^{-7}~\mathrm{yr^{-1}}$. However, the period change rate calculated from the models is smaller in two orders than the one derived from the O-C diagram. Together with the sinusoidal function signature, the period variations are regarded to be dominated by the light-travel time effect of the orbital motion of a three-body system with two low-luminosity components, rather than the stellar evolutionary effect.

The ASAS-SN Bright Supernova Catalog $-$ II. 2015

This manuscript presents information for all supernovae discovered by the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) during 2015, its second full year of operations. The same information is presented for bright ($m_V\leq17$), spectroscopically confirmed supernovae discovered by other sources in 2015. As with the first ASAS-SN bright supernova catalog, we also present redshifts and near-UV through IR magnitudes for all supernova host galaxies in both samples. Combined with our previous catalog, this work comprises a complete catalog of 455 supernovae from multiple professional and amateur sources, allowing for population studies that were previously impossible. This is the second of a series of yearly papers on bright supernovae and their hosts from the ASAS-SN team.

The ASAS-SN Bright Supernova Catalog $-$ I. 2013$-$2014

We present basic statistics for all supernovae discovered by the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) during its first year-and-a-half of operations, spanning 2013 and 2014. We also present the same information for all other bright ($m_V\leq17$), spectroscopically confirmed supernovae discovered from 2014 May 1 through the end of 2014, providing a comparison to the ASAS-SN sample starting from the point where ASAS-SN became operational in both hemispheres. In addition, we present collected redshifts and near-UV through IR magnitudes, where available, for all host galaxies of the bright supernovae in both samples. This work represents a comprehensive catalog of bright supernovae and their hosts from multiple professional and amateur sources, allowing for population studies that were not previously possible because the all-sky emphasis of ASAS-SN redresses many previously existing biases. In particular, ASAS-SN systematically finds bright supernovae closer to the centers of host galaxies than either other professional surveys or amateurs, a remarkable result given ASAS-SN's poorer angular resolution. This is the first of a series of yearly papers on bright supernovae and their hosts that will be released by the ASAS-SN team.

Non-Markovian dynamics of open quantum systems without rotating wave approximation

We study the non-Markovian dynamics of a damped oscillator coupled with a reservoir. We present exact formulas for the oscillator's evolution directly from the BCH formula by series expansion with neither Markovian nor rotating wave approximation (RWA). Based on these, we show the existence of the non-Markovian feature of the system's evolution for the damped oscillator. By numerical simulation we find that the non-Markovian feature exists within a wide range of the coupling strength, even when the coupling strength is very small. To this problem, prior art results have assumed RWA and the existence of non-Markovian feature was found when the system-reservoir coupling is strong enough. However, as we show, given such a strong coupling, the original Hamiltonian without RWA is actually not physical. Therefore, our exact study here has thoroughly concluded the issue of non-Markovian feature.

Uncoupled achromatic condition of a dog-leg system with the presence of RF cavities

To merge the beam from either of the two injectors to the main linac, a dog-leg system will be employed in the second Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT2) line of the China ADS driving accelerator. The achromatic condition has to be guaranteed to avoid beam center excursion against energy jitter. RF cavities were found indispensable to control the bunch length growth in the dog-leg system of MEBT2. The full uncoupling between transverse and longitudinal plane is desired to minimize the growth of projected rms emittances. The uncoupled achromatic condition of this dogleg system with the presence of RF bunching cavities will be deduced using the method of transfer matrixes. It is found that to fulfil the uncoupling condition, the distance between the bunching cavities is uniquely determined by the maximum energy gain of the RF cavities. The theoretical analysis is verified by the simulation code TraceWin. The space charge effect on the uncoupled achromatic condition and the beam emittance growth will also be discussed.

Classification of Hypersurfaces with Two Distinct Principal Curvatures and Closed Moebius Form in $\mathbb{S}^{m+1}$

Let $x$ be an $m$-dimensional umbilic-free hypersurface in an $(m+1)$-dimensional unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{m+1}(m\geq3)$. One of important questions is to classify hypersurfaces with two distinct principal curvatures. In this paper, we classify and explicitly express the hypersurfaces with two distinct principal curvatures and closed Moebius form, and then we characterize and classify conformally flat hypersurfaces of dimension larger than 3.
