Multi-Scale Progressive Fusion Network for Single Image Deraining

Rain streaks in the air appear in various blurring degrees and resolutions due to different distances from their positions to the camera. Similar rain patterns are visible in a rain image as well as its multi-scale (or multi-resolution) versions, which makes it possible to exploit such complementary information for rain streak representation. In this work, we explore the multi-scale collaborative representation for rain streaks from the perspective of input image scales and hierarchical deep features in a unified framework, termed multi-scale progressive fusion network (MSPFN) for single image rain streak removal. For similar rain streaks at different positions, we employ recurrent calculation to capture the global texture, thus allowing to explore the complementary and redundant information at the spatial dimension to characterize target rain streaks. Besides, we construct multi-scale pyramid structure, and further introduce the attention mechanism to guide the fine fusion of this correlated information from different scales. This multi-scale progressive fusion strategy not only promotes the cooperative representation, but also boosts the end-to-end training. Our proposed method is extensively evaluated on several benchmark datasets and achieves state-of-the-art results. Moreover, we conduct experiments on joint deraining, detection, and segmentation tasks, and inspire a new research direction of vision task-driven image deraining. Learning Inverse Rendering of Faces from Real-world Videos

In this paper we examine the problem of inverse rendering of real face images. Existing methods decompose a face image into three components (albedo, normal, and illumination) by supervised training on synthetic face data. However, due to the domain gap between real and synthetic face images, a model trained on synthetic data often does not generalize well to real data. Meanwhile, since no ground truth for any component is available for real images, it is not feasible to conduct supervised learning on real face images. To alleviate this problem, we propose a weakly supervised training approach to train our model on real face videos, based on the assumption of consistency of albedo and normal across different frames, thus bridging the gap between real and synthetic face images. In addition, we introduce a learning framework, called IlluRes-SfSNet, to further extract the residual map to capture the global illumination effects that give the fine details that are largely ignored in existing methods. Our network is trained on both real and synthetic data, benefiting from both. We comprehensively evaluate our methods on various benchmarks, obtaining better inverse rendering results than the state-of-the-art.

Masked Face Recognition Dataset and Application

In order to effectively prevent the spread of COVID-19 virus, almost everyone wears a mask during coronavirus epidemic. This almost makes conventional facial recognition technology ineffective in many cases, such as community access control, face access control, facial attendance, facial security checks at train stations, etc. Therefore, it is very urgent to improve the recognition performance of the existing face recognition technology on the masked faces. Most current advanced face recognition approaches are designed based on deep learning, which depend on a large number of face samples. However, at present, there are no publicly available masked face recognition datasets. To this end, this work proposes three types of masked face datasets, including Masked Face Detection Dataset (MFDD), Real-world Masked Face Recognition Dataset (RMFRD) and Simulated Masked Face Recognition Dataset (SMFRD). Among them, to the best of our knowledge, RMFRD is currently theworld's largest real-world masked face dataset. These datasets are freely available to industry and academia, based on which various applications on masked faces can be developed. The multi-granularity masked face recognition model we developed achieves 95% accuracy, exceeding the results reported by the industry. Our datasets are available at: https://github.com/X-zhangyang/Real-World-Masked-Face-Dataset.

Earlier Attention? Aspect-Aware LSTM for Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis

Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) aims to predict fine-grained sentiments of comments with respect to given aspect terms or categories. In previous ABSA methods, the importance of aspect has been realized and verified. Most existing LSTM-based models take aspect into account via the attention mechanism, where the attention weights are calculated after the context is modeled in the form of contextual vectors. However, aspect-related information may be already discarded and aspect-irrelevant information may be retained in classic LSTM cells in the context modeling process, which can be improved to generate more effective context representations. This paper proposes a novel variant of LSTM, termed as aspect-aware LSTM (AA-LSTM), which incorporates aspect information into LSTM cells in the context modeling stage before the attention mechanism. Therefore, our AA-LSTM can dynamically produce aspect-aware contextual representations. We experiment with several representative LSTM-based models by replacing the classic LSTM cells with the AA-LSTM cells. Experimental results on SemEval-2014 Datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of AA-LSTM.

Knowledge-aware Graph Neural Networks with Label Smoothness Regularization for Recommender Systems

Knowledge graphs capture structured information and relations between a set of entities or items. As such knowledge graphs represent an attractive source of information that could help improve recommender systems. However, existing approaches in this domain rely on manual feature engineering and do not allow for an end-to-end training. Here we propose Knowledge-aware Graph Neural Networks with Label Smoothness regularization (KGNN-LS) to provide better recommendations. Conceptually, our approach computes user-specific item embeddings by first applying a trainable function that identifies important knowledge graph relationships for a given user. This way we transform the knowledge graph into a user-specific weighted graph and then apply a graph neural network to compute personalized item embeddings. To provide better inductive bias, we rely on label smoothness assumption, which posits that adjacent items in the knowledge graph are likely to have similar user relevance labels/scores. Label smoothness provides regularization over the edge weights and we prove that it is equivalent to a label propagation scheme on a graph. We also develop an efficient implementation that shows strong scalability with respect to the knowledge graph size. Experiments on four datasets show that our method outperforms state of the art baselines. KGNN-LS also achieves strong performance in cold-start scenarios where user-item interactions are sparse.

SuperPCA: A Superpixelwise PCA Approach for Unsupervised Feature Extraction of Hyperspectral Imagery

As an unsupervised dimensionality reduction method, principal component analysis (PCA) has been widely considered as an efficient and effective preprocessing step for hyperspectral image (HSI) processing and analysis tasks. It takes each band as a whole and globally extracts the most representative bands. However, different homogeneous regions correspond to different objects, whose spectral features are diverse. It is obviously inappropriate to carry out dimensionality reduction through a unified projection for an entire HSI. In this paper, a simple but very effective superpixelwise PCA approach, called SuperPCA, is proposed to learn the intrinsic low-dimensional features of HSIs. In contrast to classical PCA models, SuperPCA has four main properties. (1) Unlike the traditional PCA method based on a whole image, SuperPCA takes into account the diversity in different homogeneous regions, that is, different regions should have different projections. (2) Most of the conventional feature extraction models cannot directly use the spatial information of HSIs, while SuperPCA is able to incorporate the spatial context information into the unsupervised dimensionality reduction by superpixel segmentation. (3) Since the regions obtained by superpixel segmentation have homogeneity, SuperPCA can extract potential low-dimensional features even under noise. (4) Although SuperPCA is an unsupervised method, it can achieve competitive performance when compared with supervised approaches. The resulting features are discriminative, compact, and noise resistant, leading to improved HSI classification performance. Experiments on three public datasets demonstrate that the SuperPCA model significantly outperforms the conventional PCA based dimensionality reduction baselines for HSI classification.
