SASV Based on Pre-trained ASV System and Integrated Scoring Module

Based on the assumption that there is a correlation between anti-spoofing and speaker verification, a Total-Divide-Total integrated Spoofing-Aware Speaker Verification (SASV) system based on pre-trained automatic speaker verification (ASV) system and integrated scoring module is proposed and submitted to the SASV 2022 Challenge. The training and scoring of ASV and anti-spoofing countermeasure (CM) in current SASV systems are relatively independent, ignoring the correlation. In this paper, by leveraging the correlation between the two tasks, an integrated SASV system can be obtained by simply training a few more layers on the basis of the baseline pre-trained ASV subsystem. The features in pre-trained ASV system are utilized for logical access spoofing speech detection. Further, speaker embeddings extracted by the pre-trained ASV system are used to improve the performance of the CM. The integrated scoring module takes the embeddings of the ASV and anti-spoofing branches as input and preserves the correlation between the two tasks through matrix operations to produce integrated SASV scores. Submitted primary system achieved equal error rate (EER) of 3.07\% on the development dataset of the SASV 2022 Challenge and 4.30\% on the evaluation part, which is a 25\% improvement over the baseline systems.

Design and analysis of electrothermal metasurfaces

Electrothermal metasurfaces have attracted extensive attention due to their ability to dynamically control thermal infrared radiation. Although previous studies were mainly focused on the metasurfaces with infinite unit cells, the finite-size effect can be a critical design factor for developing thermal metasurfaces with fast response and broad temperature uniformity in practice. Here, we study the thermal metasurfaces consisting of gold nanorods with a finite array size, which, with only several periods, can achieve a resonance close to that of the infinite case. More importantly, such a small footprint due to the finite array size results in the response time down to a nanosecond level. Furthermore, the number of the unit cells in the direction perpendicular to the axis of the nanorods is found to be insensitive to the resonance and response time, thus providing a tunability in aspect ratio that can boost the temperature uniformity in the sub-Kelvin level.

Could TDE outflows produce the PeV neutrino events?

A tidal disruption event (TDE), AT2019dsg, was observed to be associated with a PeV neutrino event, IceCube-191001A, lagging the optical outburst by a half year. It is known that TDEs may generate ultrafast outflows. If the TDE occurs in a cloudy environment, the outflow-cloud interactions may form shock waves which generate accelerated protons and hence delayed neutrinos from hadronic interactions in clouds. Here we investigate the neutrino production in AT2019dsg by examining the TDE outflow-cloud interaction model. We find that, for an outflow with a velocity of 0.07c and a kinetic luminosity of $10^{45}\rm erg\ s^{-1}$, protons may be accelerated up to $\sim$ 60 PeV by the bow shocks, and generate PeV neutrinos by interactions with clouds. The predicted neutrino number in this model depends on the uncertainties of model parameters and in order to match the observations, some challenging values of parameters have been involved. The PeV neutrino event number can be $\sim 4\times10^{-3}$ for a hard proton index $Γ=1.5$.

Graph Enhanced Contrastive Learning for Radiology Findings Summarization

The impression section of a radiology report summarizes the most prominent observation from the findings section and is the most important section for radiologists to communicate to physicians. Summarizing findings is time-consuming and can be prone to error for inexperienced radiologists, and thus automatic impression generation has attracted substantial attention. With the encoder-decoder framework, most previous studies explore incorporating extra knowledge (e.g., static pre-defined clinical ontologies or extra background information). Yet, they encode such knowledge by a separate encoder to treat it as an extra input to their models, which is limited in leveraging their relations with the original findings. To address the limitation, we propose a unified framework for exploiting both extra knowledge and the original findings in an integrated way so that the critical information (i.e., key words and their relations) can be extracted in an appropriate way to facilitate impression generation. In detail, for each input findings, it is encoded by a text encoder, and a graph is constructed through its entities and dependency tree. Then, a graph encoder (e.g., graph neural networks (GNNs)) is adopted to model relation information in the constructed graph. Finally, to emphasize the key words in the findings, contrastive learning is introduced to map positive samples (constructed by masking non-key words) closer and push apart negative ones (constructed by masking key words). The experimental results on OpenI and MIMIC-CXR confirm the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Smart Name Lookup for NDN Forwarding Plane via Neural Networks

Name lookup is a key technology for the forwarding plane of content router in Named Data Networking (NDN). To realize the efficient name lookup, what counts is deploying a highperformance index in content routers. So far, the proposed indexes have shown good performance, most of which are optimized for or evaluated with URLs collected from the current Internet, as the large-scale NDN names are not available yet. Unfortunately, the performance of these indexes is always impacted in terms of lookup speed, memory consumption and false positive probability, as the distributions of URLs retrieved in memory may differ from those of real NDN names independently generated by content-centric applications online. Focusing on this gap, a smart mapping model named Pyramid-NN via neural networks is proposed to build an index called LNI for NDN forwarding plane. Through learning the distributions of the names retrieved in the static memory, LNI can not only reduce the memory consumption and the probability of false positive, but also ensure the performance of real NDN name lookup. Experimental results show that LNI-based FIB can reduce the memory consumption to 58.258 MB for 2 million names. Moreover, as it can be deployed on SRAMs, the throughput is about 177 MSPS, which well meets the current network requirement for fast packet processing.

Geometry-Based Stochastic Probability Models for the LoS and NLoS Paths of A2G Channels under Urban Scenario

Path probability prediction is essential to describe the dynamic birth and death of propagation paths, and build the accurate channel model for air-to-ground (A2G) communications. The occurrence probability of each path is complex and time-variant due to fast changeable altitudes of UAVs and scattering environments. Considering the A2G channels under urban scenarios, this paper presents three novel stochastic probability models for the line-of-sight (LoS) path, ground specular (GS) path, and building-scattering (BS) path, respectively. By analyzing the geometric stochastic information of three-dimensional (3D) scattering environments, the proposed models are derived with respect to the width, height, and distribution of buildings. The effect of Fresnel zone and altitudes of transceivers are also taken into account. Simulation results show that the proposed LoS path probability model has good performance at different frequencies and altitudes, and is also consistent with existing models at the low or high altitude. Moreover, the proposed LoS and NLoS path probability models show good agreement with the ray-tracing (RT) simulation method.

Neutrino Observations of LHAASO Sources: Present Constraints and Future Prospects

The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) observed a dozen of gamma-ray sources with significant emission above 100 TeV, which may be strong candidates of PeVatrons. Neutrino observations are crucial to diagnose whether the gamma-ray radiative process is hadronic or leptonic. We use the Bayesian method to analyze the ten-year (2008-2018) IceCube data, and hence constrain the hadronic gamma-ray emission in the LHAASO sources. The present neutrino data show that the hadronic gamma-ray flux from Crab Nebula is lower than the observed gamma-ray flux at the 90% C.L. and contributes less than 86%, which disfavors the hadronic origin of the gamma-rays below tens of TeV. For the other LHAASO sources, the present neutrino observations cannot put useful constraints on the gamma-ray radiative process. We consider the uncertainty of the source extension: the upper limits on hadronic gamma-ray flux tend to increase with the extension; and some sources, i.e., LHAASO J2032+4102, LHAASO J1929+1745, and LHAASO J1908+0621, show relatively high statistical significance of neutrino signals if the extension is <0.6 deg. We finally estimate the future observational results of LHAASO sources by the proposed neutrino telescopes. If the LHAASO-observed PeV gamma-rays are of hadronic origin, Crab Nebula may be detected at >100 TeV at 3-sigma C.L. within 20 years by a neutrino detector with the effective area 30 times that of IceCube.

Rethinking the Optimization of Average Precision: Only Penalizing Negative Instances before Positive Ones is Enough

Optimizing the approximation of Average Precision (AP) has been widely studied for image retrieval. Limited by the definition of AP, such methods consider both negative and positive instances ranking before each positive instance. However, we claim that only penalizing negative instances before positive ones is enough, because the loss only comes from these negative instances. To this end, we propose a novel loss, namely Penalizing Negative instances before Positive ones (PNP), which can directly minimize the number of negative instances before each positive one. In addition, AP-based methods adopt a fixed and sub-optimal gradient assignment strategy. Therefore, we systematically investigate different gradient assignment solutions via constructing derivative functions of the loss, resulting in PNP-I with increasing derivative functions and PNP-D with decreasing ones. PNP-I focuses more on the hard positive instances by assigning larger gradients to them and tries to make all relevant instances closer. In contrast, PNP-D pays less attention to such instances and slowly corrects them. For most real-world data, one class usually contains several local clusters. PNP-I blindly gathers these clusters while PNP-D keeps them as they were. Therefore, PNP-D is more superior. Experiments on three standard retrieval datasets show consistent results with the above analysis. Extensive evaluations demonstrate that PNP-D achieves the state-of-the-art performance. Back-ends Selection for Deep Speaker Embeddings

Probabilistic Linear Discriminant Analysis (PLDA) was the dominant and necessary back-end for early speaker recognition approaches, like i-vector and x-vector. However, with the development of neural networks and margin-based loss functions, we can obtain deep speaker embeddings (DSEs), which have advantages of increased inter-class separation and smaller intra-class distances. In this case, PLDA seems unnecessary or even counterproductive for the discriminative embeddings, and cosine similarity scoring (Cos) achieves better performance than PLDA in some situations. Motivated by this, in this paper, we systematically explore how to select back-ends (Cos or PLDA) for deep speaker embeddings to achieve better performance in different situations. By analyzing PLDA and the properties of DSEs extracted from models with different numbers of segment-level layers, we make the conjecture that Cos is better in same-domain situations and PLDA is better in cross-domain situations. We conduct experiments on VoxCeleb and NIST SRE datasets in four application situations, single-/multi-domain training and same-/cross-domain test, to validate our conjecture and briefly explain why back-ends adaption algorithms work.

An Asymmetrical Model for High Energy Radiation of Cassiopeia A

Cassiopeia A (Cas A) supernova remnant shows strong radiation from radio to gamma-ray bands. The mechanism of gamma-ray radiation in Cas A and its possible contribution to PeV cosmic rays are still under debate. The X-ray imaging reveals an asymmetric profile of Cas A, suggesting the existence of a jet-like structure. In this work, we propose an asymmetrical model for Cas A, consisting of a fast moving jet-like structure and a slowly expanding isotropic shell. This model can account for the multi-wavelength spectra of Cas A, especially for the power-law hard X-ray spectrum from $\sim$ 60 to 220 keV. The GeV to TeV emission from Cas A should be contributed by both hadronic and leptonic processes. Moreover, the jet-like structure may produce a gamma-ray flux of $\sim 10^{-13}\rm erg\ cm^{-2}\ s^{-1}$ at $\sim 100$ TeV, to be examined by LHAASO and CTA.

Luminosity function and event rate density of XMM-Newton-selected supernova shock-breakout candidates

A dozen X-ray supernova shock breakout (SN SBO) candidates were reported recently based on XMM-Newton archival data, which increased the X-ray selected SN SBO sample by an order of magnitude. Assuming they are genuine SN SBOs, we study the luminosity function (LF) by improving upon the method used in our previous work. The light curves and the spectra of the candidates were used to derive the maximum volume within which these objects could be detected with XMM-Newton by simulation. The results show that the SN SBO LF can be described by either a broken power law (BPL) with indices (at the 68$\%$ confidence level) of $0.48 \pm 0.28$ and $2.11 \pm 1.27$ before and after the break luminosity at $\log (L_b/\rm erg\,s^{-1})=$ $45.32 \pm 0.55$ or a single power law (SPL) with index of $0.80 \pm 0.16$. The local event rate densities of SN SBOs above $5\times 10^{42}$ $\rm erg\,s^{-1}$ are consistent for two models, i.e., $4.6 ^{+1.7}_{-1.3} \times 10^4$ and $4.9 ^{+1.9}_{-1.4} \times 10^4$ $\rm Gpc^{-3}\,yr^{-1}$ for BPL and SPL models, respectively. The number of fast X-ray transients of SN SBO origin can be significantly increased by the wide-field X-ray telescopes such as the Einstein Probe.

The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) Science Book (2021 Edition)

Since the science white paper of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) published on arXiv in 2019 [e-Print: 1905.02773 (astro-ph.HE)], LHAASO has completed the transition from a project to an operational gamma-ray astronomical observatory LHAASO is a new generation multi-component facility located in Daocheng, Sichuan province of China, at an altitude of 4410 meters. It aims at measuring with unprecedented sensitivity the spectrum, composition, and anisotropy of cosmic rays in the energy range between 10$^{12}$ and 10$^{18}$~eV, and acting simultaneously as a wide aperture (one stereoradiant) continuously operating gamma-ray telescope in the energy range between 10$^{11}$ and $10^{15}$~eV with the designed sensitivity of 1.3\% of the Crab Unit (CU) above 100 TeV. LHAASO's capability of measuring simultaneously different shower components (electrons, muons, and Cherenkov/fluorescence light), will allow it to investigate the origin, acceleration, and propagation of CR through measurement of the energy spectrum, elemental composition, and anisotropy with unprecedented resolution. The remarkable sensitivity of LHAASO will play a key role in CR physics and gamma-ray astronomy for a general and comprehensive exploration of the high energy universe and will allow important studies of fundamental physics (such as indirect dark matter search, Lorentz invariance violation, quantum gravity) and solar and heliospheric physics. The LHAASO Collaboration organized an editorial working group and finished all editorial work of this science book, to summarize the instrumental features and outline the prospects of scientific researches with the LHAASO experiment.

Explore Long-Range Context feature for Speaker Verification

Capturing long-range dependency and modeling long temporal contexts is proven to benefit speaker verification tasks. In this paper, we propose the combination of the Hierarchical-Split block(HS-block) and the Depthwise Separable Self-Attention(DSSA) module to capture richer multi-range context speaker features from a local and global perspective respectively. Specifically, the HS-block splits the feature map and filters into several groups and stacks them in one block, which enlarges the receptive fields(RFs) locally. The DSSA module improves the multi-head self-attention mechanism by the depthwise-separable strategy and explicit sparse attention strategy to model the pairwise relations globally and captures effective long-range dependencies in each channel. Experiments are conducted on the Voxceleb and SITW. Our best system achieves 1.27% EER on the Voxceleb1 test set and 1.56% on SITW by applying the combination of HS-block and DSSA module.

Constraints on Hadronic Contribution to LHAASO Sources with Neutrino Observations

LHAASO detected 12 gamma-ray sources above 100 TeV which are the possible origins of Galactic cosmic-rays. We summarize the neutrino measurements by IceCube and ANTARES in the vicinity of LHAASO sources to constrain the contribution of hadronic gamma-rays in these sources. We find that the current observations constrain that the hadronic gamma-rays contribute no more than ~60% of the gamma-rays from Crab Nebula. Gamma-rays from two LHAASO sources, LHAASO J1825-1326 and LHAASO J1907+0626, are dominated by leptonic components up to ~200 TeV, under the hypotheses in the analysis by IceCube. The uncertainties of the constraint on the hadronic gamma-ray emission are discussed. We also constrain the total 100 TeV gamma-ray emission from TeV PWNe relying on the remarkable sensitivity of LHAASO at that energies.

On-Surface Decarboxylation Coupling Facilitated by Lock-to-Unlock Variation of Molecules upon the Reaction

On-surface synthesis (OSS) involving relatively high energy barriers remains challenging due to a typical dilemma: firm molecular anchor is required to prevent molecular desorption upon the reaction, whereas sufficient lateral mobility is crucial for subsequent coupling and assembly. By locking the molecular precursors on the substrate then unlocking them during the reaction, we present a strategy to address this challenge. High-yield synthesis based on well-defined decarboxylation, intermediate transition and hexamerization is demonstrated, resulting in an extended and ordered network exclusively composed of the newly-synthesized macrocyclic compound. Thanks to the steric hindrance of its maleimide group, we attain a preferential selection of the coupling. This work unlocks a promising path to enrich the reaction types and improve the coupling selectivity hence the structual homogeneity of the final product for OSS.

Subsurface Carbon-Induced Local Charge of Copper for On-Surface Displacement Reaction

Transition metal carbides have sparked unprecedented enthusiasm as high-performance catalysts in recent years. Still, the catalytic properties of copper (Cu) carbide remain unexplored. By introducing subsurface carbon (C) to Cu(111), displacement reaction of proton in carboxyl acid group with single Cu atom is demonstrated at the atomic scale and room temperature. Its occurrence is attributed to the C-doping induced local charge of surface Cu atoms (up to +0.30 e/atom), which accelerates the rate of on-surface deprotonation via reduction of the corresponding energy barrier, thus enabling the instant displacement of a proton with a Cu atom when the molecules land on the surface. Such well-defined and robust Cu$^{δ+}$ surface based on the subsurface C doping offers a novel catalytic platform for on-surface synthesis.

Height-Dependent LoS Probability Model for A2G MmWave Communications under Built-up Scenarios

Based on the three-dimensional propagation characteristic under built-up scenarios, a height-dependent line-of-sight (LoS) probability model for air-to-ground (A2G) millimeter wave (mmWave) communications is proposed in this paper. With comprehensive considerations of scenario factors, i.e., building height distribution, building width, building space, and the heights of transceivers, this paper upgrades the prediction method of International Telecommunication Union-Radio (ITU-R) standard to both low altitude and high altitude cases. In order to speed up the LoS probability prediction, an approximate parametric model is also developed based on the theoretical expression. The simulation results based on ray-tracing (RT) method show that the proposed model has good consistency with existing models at the low altitude. However, it has better performance at the high altitude. The new model can be used for the A2G channel modeling and performance analysis such as cell coverage, outage probability, and bit error rate of A2G communication systems.

Exploring a PMT+SiPM Hybrid Optical Module for Next Generation Neutrino Telescopes

Cosmic neutrinos are unique probes of the high energy universe. IceCube has discovered a diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux since 2013, but their origin remains elusive. The potential sources could include, for example, active galactic nuclei, gamma-ray bursts and star burst galaxies. To resolve those scenarios, higher statistics and better angular resolution of astrophysical neutrinos are needed. An optical module with larger photon collection area and more precise timing resolution in a next generation neutrino telescope could help. Silicon photon multipliers (SiPMs), with high quantum efficiency and fast responding time, combining with traditional PMTs, could boost photon detection efficiency and pointing capability. We will present a study on exploring the benefits of combining multiple PMTs and SiPMs in an optical module.
