The Enforcement and Feasibility of Hate Speech Moderation

Online hate speech is associated with harms ranging from deteriorating mental health to violence, yet how consistently platforms moderate hate, and whether enforcement is feasible at scale, remain poorly understood. We audit hate speech moderation on Twitter (now X) using 540,000 tweets annotated by trained native speakers, representative of a full day on the platform. Five months after posting, 80% of hateful tweets, including violent ones, remained online. Removal was only marginally more likely than for non-hateful tweets, far below scams or adult content, and insensitive to severity and reach. Automated detection could not reliably classify hate but ranked it highly, enabling human triage. Simulating this workflow, current staffing curbed little exposure, yet substantial reductions proved financially feasible, far below applicable regulatory fines. Persistent hate reflects resource allocation, not technical limits.

Effective Interventions Against AI-Enhanced Scams

In 2025, scams were responsible for an estimated $442 billion in direct losses globally. In the United States, reported losses increased by nearly 400% between 2020 and 2025. Though AI in scamming is a relatively new phenomenon, its use significantly changes the economics of scams as well as the bottlenecks in scam operations. In this paper I investigate what interventions will remain effective under this new AI-driven scamming regime. I develop a simple model of scam profits to understand how different interventions asymptotically affect scam operations. I find that three levers--reporting rate, centralization of reporting, and report accuracy--multiply in their effect on expected victims per scam channel, reducing revenue per scam channel while increasing costs. Because effects multiply, interventions affecting all three could have a significant effect on the profitability of the scam business model. My analysis suggests that even modest reporting rates against high-value scam infrastructure could have significant impacts on scam profitability.

LiveSim: Simulating Environment-Shaped Users in Multi-Agent Live-Stream Ecosystems

User behavior simulation with large language models~(LLMs) is increasingly used to support multi-agent ecosystem simulation. Existing simulators typically rely on static user profiles inferred from historical observations, which become inadequate in socially intensive environments such as live streaming where interaction dynamics continuously reshape user behavior. We propose \textbf{LiveSim}, an LLM-based framework for live-stream ecosystem simulation. It represents users as editable behavioral hypotheses and progressively refines them through trajectory-grounded interactions, where discrepancies between simulated and observed trajectories reveal missing environmental shaping effects. These signals are further extracted as transferable environment-behavior patterns and accumulated in a collective behavioral memory to improve user-level behavioral fidelity and support ecosystem-level simulation. Experiments on real-world live-stream risk-control data validate the effectiveness of LiveSim in improving user-level behavioral fidelity and enabling ecosystem-level analysis of risk evolution and platform intervention effects.

Challenging Techno-Solutionism: The Role of ICT Innovation and the Value of Technological Growth

Innovation in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become one of the key economic drivers of our technology-dependent world. Digital devices/systems have become so pervasive that it is hard to imagine new technology developments that are not totally or partially influenced by ICT innovations. Furthermore, the pace of innovation in ICT sector over the last few decades has been unprecedented in human history. In this paper, we argue that the ICT innovation paradigm has crucially shaped collective expectations and imagination about what technology more broadly can actually deliver, particularly for a more sustainable and equitable world. These expectations have often crystalised into a widespread acceptance, among general public and policy makers, of techno-solutionism. We emphasise the role of electronic microchips in deriving relentless innovation and its impacts. We identify the many impacts of this innovation cycle into three different categories: embodied, induced and implied impact.

Generativism: Toward a Learning Theory for the Age of Generative Artificial Intelligence

The four dominant learning theories of behaviorism, cognitivism, constructivism, and connectivism show significant conceptual limitations as generative artificial intelligence (AI) proliferates in educational settings. These frameworks were formulated before the emergence of AI systems capable of generating, synthesizing, and reasoning about knowledge. This article critically examines each learning theory and identifies assumptions challenged by the affordances of generative AI. Drawing on research in distributed cognition, extended mind, human-AI collaboration, AI literacy, cognitive offloading, and metacognition, the article proposes Generativism as a learning theory for the generative AI age. Generativism posits that learning increasingly occurs through the iterative co-construction of knowledge between human learners and AI systems. The proposed framework is organized around four constructs (epistemic partnership, distributed agency, generative literacy, and adaptive metacognition) and four principles specifying the relations among them. The framework offers a foundation for rethinking instructional design, learning, assessment, and expertise development in contexts where generative AI plays an integral role in cognition.

Emerging Media Use and Acceptance of Digital Immortality: A Cluster Analysis among Chinese Young Generations

Digital immortality is increasingly discussed as a technological possibility, yet empirical evidence about potential users' evaluations remains limited. We surveyed 462 Chinese young adults, combining cluster analysis of four emerging-media use frequencies with valence coding of open-ended responses to physical death, physical immortality, digital immortality, and digital death. Three profiles emerged: broad emerging-media, gaming-focused, and low-use users. Broad emerging-media users reported the highest adjusted acceptance and scored higher on several personality and worldview measures, while fear of death did not differ across profiles. Physical immortality elicited the most negative responses; digital immortality produced more mixed, less negative appraisals. More favorable digital-immortality appraisals predicted higher acceptance after adjustment for media-use profile and demographics, although scenario valence did not differ across profiles. The findings distinguish general receptivity associated with emerging-media repertoires from emotional responses to specific imagined futures, showing that evaluations depend on the form of continuity envisioned.

Meeting the Coming Wave: The Emerging Politics of AI and Work across 33 Parliaments

A new politics of artificial intelligence and work is taking shape across party systems, but comparative politics has yet to map it. Using 1,514,950 parliamentary speeches from 33 parliaments (2023-2026), we show this politics follows a different logic than political economy expects. Research anticipates that technological disruption generates demands for compensation; instead, compensation accounts for just 2.3% of response-frame mentions, while enablement and investment dominate (55.2%), regulation and restriction follow (21.8%), and training (20.6%) appears at similar rates across families. Parties disagree instead over what AI means for work and how far this technology should be restrained. The mainstream and radical right support unrestricted enablement; the left is critical but divided on remedy. Social democrats stay adoption-oriented; greens split evenly. The radical left is the clearest force for restriction. The AI conflict thus concerns not compensation after disruption, but whether politics should enable technological change or govern its trajectory.

Behavioral calibration of mobile-phone GPS data for population-representative analyses

Mobile phone mobility data have transformed the study of human behavior, but demographic and behavioral biases can compromise their representativeness and distort population-level inference. Existing calibration approaches primarily address demographic and geographic representativeness, leaving behavioral discrepancies largely uncorrected. Here we introduce the Behavioral Population (BePop) framework, which jointly calibrates mobility data to representative demographic and behavioral distributions using census data and time-use surveys. BePop embeds mobility sequences into behavioral profiles and estimates person-level weights that align both population composition and daily activity patterns. Across three U.S. metropolitan areas, the framework consistently improves agreement between GPS-derived mobility and representative behavioral distributions, including time allocation, activity transitions, and mobility motifs. Calibration also substantially alters downstream mobility indicators, demonstrating that behavioral biases can propagate into commonly used mobility measures. Our results establish behavioral representativeness as a critical complement to demographic calibration and provide a general framework for population-representative mobility inference.

How Mental Health Self-Disclosure Becomes Visible: Evidence from Eight Conditions on Reddit

People share mental health diagnoses on social media, yet how such language becomes visible around their self-disclosure, and whether community engagement tracks it, remain unexamined across conditions. We analyze 89,605 Reddit posts from 739 users across eight conditions, removing each user's diagnosis disclosure and aligning their surrounding posts to that anchor. Within the pre-disclosure year, language-visible burden was highest in the month before disclosure for six conditions, earlier for post-traumatic stress disorder and furthest from it for borderline personality disorder, and remained visible afterward rather than resolving. The theme Seeking Clinical Explanations showed the largest early-to-late difference before disclosure in five conditions, yet engagement rarely tracked what users wrote: only 9 of 360 language--engagement correlations survived correction. Disclosure is therefore a waypoint in an unevenly visible process, and we offer implications for community practice and platform design where engagement metrics do not reflect clinical need.

MultiGhostBench: A Multilingual Benchmark for Long-Form LLM-Generated Text Attribution under Distribution Shifts

While existing work on LLM authorship attribution (AA) has made progress, available benchmarks remain limited, often focusing on English, controlled settings, or relatively outdated models, with the few multilingual studies considering only relatively short texts. We introduce MultiGhostBench, a multilingual benchmark comprising 928 books generated by five recent LLMs across six languages and three scripts, with an average length of approximately 59K words per book. The benchmark supports evaluation under domain, author, and language shifts. Evaluation of representative AA methods shows that no single method consistently performs best across settings, and performance generally degrades under distribution shifts. Transformer-based detectors can retain generator-related information across languages, although transfer effectiveness varies by language pair, whereas statistical and fingerprint-based detectors are more language-dependent. We envision MultiGhostBench as a valuable resource for the development and evaluation of robust AA methods. The dataset and code can be found at https://github.com/GrecoMT/MultiGhostBench.

Individualized Algorithmic Advice as a Strategic Signal on Competitive Markets

As algorithms increasingly mediate competitive decision-making, their influence extends beyond individual outcomes to shaping strategic market dynamics. In our experiment, we examined how algorithmic advice affects human behavior in a classic economic game with a unique, non-collusive, and analytically traceable equilibrium. Participants (N = 129) played a Cournot quantity competition with equilibrium-aligned or strategically biased algorithmic recommendations. While individualized equilibrium advice supported stable convergence, collusively downward-biased advice led to sustained underproduction and supracompetitive profits - hallmarks of tacit collusion. Participants' quantities converged faster and more consistently toward individualized than collective equilibrium advice, potentially due to an objective quality advantage or greater perceived ownership of the former. These findings demonstrate that algorithmic advice can function as a strategic signal, shaping coordination even without explicit communication. The results echo real-world concerns about algorithmic collusion and underscore the need for careful design and oversight of algorithmic decision-support systems in competitive environments.

Agentic Workflow for Education: Concepts and Applications

With the rapid advancement of Large Language Models (LLMs) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) agents, agentic workflows are showing transformative potential in education. This study introduces the Agentic Workflow for Education (AWE), a four-component model comprising self-reflection, tool invocation, task planning, and multi-agent collaboration. We distinguish AWE from traditional LLM-based linear interactions and propose a theoretical framework grounded in the von Neumann Multi-Agent System (MAS) architecture. Through a paradigm shift from static prompt-response systems to dynamic, nonlinear workflows, AWE enables scalable, personalized, and collaborative task execution. We further identify four core application domains: integrated learning environments, personalized AI-assisted learning, simulation-based experimentation, and data-driven decision-making. A case study on automated math test generation shows that AWE-generated items are statistically comparable to real exam questions, validating the model's effectiveness. AWE offers a promising path toward reducing teacher workload, enhancing instructional quality, and enabling broader educational innovation.

Unpacking Interaction Profiles and Strategies in Human-AI Collaborative Problem Solving: A Cognitive Distribution and Regulation Perspective

This study adopts an integrated distributed cognition and regulation of learning perspective to examine the collaboration patterns and dynamics of human-AI collaboration when college students collaborating with AI for complex problem-solving. Through cluster analysis, three distinct collaborative problem-solving modes were identified in this study: Delegated Reasoning (DR), Concerted Interpretation (CI), and Delegated Elaboration (DE). This study found that the DR group achieved the highest task performance, significantly outperforming the CI group. Additionally, the semantic similarity between human and AI discourse was notably the highest in the DR group. In contrast, the CI group reported significantly greater use of self-regulation strategies. These findings uncover a critical tension between the efficiency of the distributed system and the depth of human learners regulatory engagement. Insights from this study offer valuable implications for the future design of AI-empowered educational tools and student-AI collaborative learning frameworks.

MusGU+: Toward a Musician-Centered Evaluation Framework and Discovery Tool for Generative Music AI

Generative music systems are increasingly presented as tools that democratize music creation, yet their practical suitability for musicians remains underexplored. Prior work includes openness-focused evaluation frameworks, such as MusGO (Music-Generative Open AI), as well as qualitative studies of musicians' experiences with generative systems. However, these approaches do not support systematic comparison or early-stage discovery of models for creative use. Motivated by such limitations, we introduce MusGU+, a musician-centered evaluation framework organized around three dimensions: Adaptability, Usability, and Controllability. Together, these capture whether a model can be feasibly trained or fine-tuned on personal data, integrated into real-world music workflows, and controlled in musically meaningful ways. We evaluate 10 representative generative music systems and present an interactive discovery tool that enables musicians to explore and filter models according to these criteria. While MusGO remains valuable for promoting responsible research practices, MusGU+ supports informed selection and practical adoption of generative systems by musicians.

Generative AI Alignment with Hinduism's Theological Plurality and Sacred Representation

Generative AI systems are increasingly used to answer personal questions and mediate everyday practices, including religion. However, existing discussions around AI alignment and ethics have largely centered secular, Western, and Abrahamic assumptions about religion, offering limited attention to other faith-based traditions. In this paper, we examine how Hindu users engage with generative AI systems in relation to their religious knowledge, belief, and practice. Drawing on 15 semi-structured interviews with Bangladeshi Hindu participants, we analyze how users interpret AI-generated religious representations, scriptural explanations, devotional interactions, and synthetic religious media. We found that AI can be both accessible and ethically troubling. While AI supported scriptural inquiry, devotional visualization, and religious storytelling, our study also identified concerns about theological flattening, cultural misrepresentation, devotional manipulation, and the simulation of sacred presence and authority. We conclude by arguing that religious alignment in generative AI requires interpretive alignment: systems that disclose their limits, preserve plurality, and avoid simulating sacred authority and sycophantic personalization.

Adaptive Data Collection for Latin-American Community-sourced Evaluation of Stereotypes (LACES)

The evaluation of societal biases in NLP models is critically hindered by a geo-cultural gap, This leaves regions such as Latin America severely underserved, making it impossible to adequately assess or mitigate the perpetuation of harmful regional stereotypes in language technologies. This paper presents LACES, a stereotype association dataset, for 15 Latin American countries. This dataset includes 4,789 stereotype associations manually created and annotated by 83 participants. The dataset was developed through targeted community partnerships across Latin America. Additionally, in this paper, we propose a novel adaptive data collection methodology that uniquely integrates the sourcing of new stereotype entries and the validation of existing data within a single, unified workflow. This approach results in a resource with more unique stereotypes than previous static collection methods, enabling a more efficient stereotype collection. The paper further supports the quality of LACES by demonstrating reduced efficacy of debiasing methods on this dataset in comparison to existing popular stereotype benchmarks.

AMINA: The Inclusive and Accountable AI for Marginalized Immigrant Nonprofit Assistance

Immigrant-led nonprofit groups, particularly those operating in politically sensitive contexts, face exclusion from formal registries and digital platforms. This paper reports a three-phase mixed-methods study with Iranian immigrant nonprofit practitioners: 27 semi-structured interviews, a co-design session, and 7 evaluation and feedback interviews on a prototyped AI assistant, AMINA. Our findings highlight how legitimacy barriers, capacity gaps, and politically charged misinformation constrain nonprofit operations. We translate these insights into design goals for an inclusive nonprofit AI assistant: support for everyday group operations, recognition of informal nonprofit efforts, proactive countering of misinformation, and multilingual, accessible interaction. User evaluations show AMINAs potential to reduce reporting burdens and foster transparency through proactive reminders, and catalyze collaboration across dispersed networks. We contribute to CSCW and HCI by characterizing the cooperative work of transnational immigrant nonprofits, extending scholarship on informality and misinformation, and demonstrating how AI can act as a collaborative partner that strengthens, rather than displaces, the human connections at the core of nonprofit ecosystems, while also posing major risks.

Addressing Trust in AI Systems through Education: A Didactic Perspective

Machine learning (ML) education faces two persistent and connected obstacles: many educational tools present ML as an opaque black box, which leaves learners with a superficial understanding, and this same opacity prevents users from forming the calibrated trust that appropriate reliance on AI systems requires. We present ICE-T, a didactic framework that integrates three mutually reinforcing facets: intermodal transfer grounded in Bruner's enactive, iconic, and symbolic modes of representation, computational thinking operationalized through the Use-Modify-Create progression, and explanatory thinking supported by a process model. Connecting the framework to the empirical literature on algorithm aversion, AI literacy, and mental model formation, and to systematic reviews of the K-12 ML activity landscape, we argue that the three facets supply the cognitive mechanisms that the trust calibration literature identifies as drivers of appropriate reliance: representational richness, graduated process control, and the capacity to contextualize errors. On this basis, we propose that trust calibration be treated as an explicit educational objective, with ICE-T as a principled and scalable means of achieving it.
