Half-Magnetization Plateau of a Dipolar Spin Ice in a [100] Field

We report here numerical results of the low-temperature behavior of a dipolar spin ice in a magnetic field along the [100] direction. Tuning the magnetic field, the system exhibit a half-magnetization plateau at low temperature. This half-polarized phase should correspond to a quantum solid phase in an effective 2D quantum boson model, and the transition from the Coulomb phase with a power-law correlation to this state can be regarded as a superfluid to a quantum solid transition. We discuss possible experimental signatures of this half-polarized state.

Efficient Langevin Simulation of Coupled Classical Fields and Fermions

We introduce an efficient Langevin method to study bilinear Fermionic Hamiltonians interacting with classical fields. Our method is suitable for very large systems and offers high accuracy. To demonstrate the method, we study complex non-coplanar chiral spin textures on the triangular Kondo lattice model. We also explore non-equilibrium mesoscale physics such as chiral domain coarsening and Z2 vortex annihilation.

Dynamics and Conductivity Near Quantum Criticality

Relativistic O(N) field theories are studied near the quantum critical point in two space dimensions. We compute dynamical correlations by large scale Monte Carlo simulations and numerical analytic continuation. In the ordered side, the scalar spectral function exhibits a universal peak at the Higgs mass. For N=3 and 4 we confirm its ω^3 rise at low frequency. On the disordered side, the spectral function exhibits a sharp gap. For N=2, the dynamical conductivity rises above a threshold at the Higgs mass (density gap), in the superfluid (Mott insulator) phase. For charged bosons, (Josephson arrays) the power law rise above the Higgs mass, increases from two to four. Approximate charge-vortex duality is reflected in the ratio of imaginary conductivities on either side of the transition. We determine the critical conductivity to be σ^*_c = 0.3 (\pm 0.1) 4e^2/h. In the appendices, we describe a generalization of the worm algorithm to N>2, and also a singular value decomposition error analysis for the numerical analytic continuation.

Non-equilibrium steady states in the quantum XXZ spin chain

We investigate the dynamics of a critical XXZ spin-1/2 chain prepared in an inhomogeneous initial state with different magnetizations on the left and right halves. We simulate the real-time evolution using the time-evolving block decimation (TEBD) method. We follow the front propagation by measuring the magnetization and entanglement entropy profiles, and we focus on the situation where the initial state is not fully polarized. At long times, as in the free fermion case (T. Antal et al. 1999), a large central region develops where correlations become time-independent and translation invariant. The shape and speed of the fronts is studied numerically and we evaluate the stationary current as a function of initial magnetic field and as a function of the anisotropy Δ. We compare the results with the conductance of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, and with the exact free-fermion solution at Δ=0. We also investigate the two-point correlations in the stationary region and find a good agreement with the "twisted" form obtained by J. Lancaster and A. Mitra (2010) using bosonization. Some deviations are nevertheless observed for strong currents.

Entanglement spectra between coupled Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids: Applications to ladder systems and topological phases

We study the entanglement spectrum (ES) and entropy between two coupled Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLLs) on parallel periodic chains. This problem gives access to the entanglement properties of various interesting systems, such as spin ladders as well as two-dimensional topological phases. By expanding interchain interactions to quadratic order in bosonic fields, we are able to calculate the ES for both gapped and gapless systems using only methods for free theories. In certain gapless phases of coupled non-chiral TLLs, we interestingly find an ES with a dispersion relation proportional to the square root of the subsystem momentum, which we relate to a long-range interaction in the entanglement Hamiltonian. We numerically demonstrate the emergence of this unusual dispersion in a model of hard-core bosons on a ladder. In gapped phases of coupled non-chiral TLLs, which are relevant to spin ladders and topological insulators, we show that the ES consists of linearly dispersing modes, which resembles the spectrum of a single-chain TLL but is characterized by a modified TLL parameter. Based on a calculation for coupled chiral TLLs, we are also able to provide a very simple proof for the correspondence between the ES and the edge-state spectrum in quantum Hall systems consistent with previous numerical and analytical studies.

Critical behavior in the cubic dimer model at nonzero monomer density

We study critical behavior in the classical cubic dimer model (CDM) in the presence of a finite density of monomers. With attractive interactions between parallel dimers, the monomer-free CDM exhibits an unconventional transition from a Coulomb phase to a dimer crystal. Monomers acts as charges (or monopoles) in the Coulomb phase and, at nonzero density, lead to a standard Landau-type transition. We use large-scale Monte Carlo simulations to study the system in the neighborhood of the critical point, and find results in agreement with detailed predictions of scaling theory. Going beyond previous studies of the transition in the absence of monomers, we explicitly confirm the distinction between conventional and unconventional criticality, and quantitatively demonstrate the crossover between the two. Our results also provide additional evidence for the theoretical claim that the transition in the CDM belongs in the same universality class as the deconfined quantum critical point in the SU(2) JQ model.

A hierarchy of exactly solvable spin-1/2 chains with so(N)_1 critical points

We construct a hierarchy of exactly solvable spin-1/2 chains with so(N)_1 critical points. Our construction is based on the framework of condensate-induced transitions between topological phases. We employ this framework to construct a Hamiltonian term that couples N transverse field Ising chains such that the resulting theory is critical and described by the so(N)_1 conformal field theory. By employing spin duality transformations, we then cast these spin chains for arbitrary N into translationally invariant forms that all allow exact solution by the means of a Jordan-Wigner transformation. For odd N our models generalize the phase diagram of the transverse field Ising chain, the simplest model in our hierarchy. For even N the models can be viewed as longer ranger generalizations of the XY chain, the next model in the hierarchy. We also demonstrate that our method of constructing spin chains with given critical points goes beyond exactly solvable models. Applying the same strategy to the Blume-Capel model, a spin-1 generalization of the Ising chain in a generic magnetic field, we construct another critical spin-1 chain with the predicted CFT describing the criticality.

Critical behavior of spin and chiral degrees of freedom in three-dimensional disordered XY models studied by the nonequilibrium aging method

The critical behavior of the gauge-glass and the XY spin-glass models in three dimensions is studied by analyzing their nonequilibrium aging dynamics. A new numerical method, which relies on the calculation of the two-time correlation and integrated response functions, is used to determine both the critical temperature and the nonequilibrium scaling exponents, both for spin and chiral degrees of freedom. First, the ferromagnetic XY model is studied to validate this nonequilibirum aging method (NAM), since for this nondisordered system we can compare with known results obtained with standard equilibrium and nonequilibrium techniques. When applied to the case of the gauge-glass model, we show that the NAM allows us to obtain precise and reliable values of its critical quantities, improving previous estimates. The XY spin-glass model with both Gaussian and bimodal bond distributions, is analyzed in more detail. The spin and the chiral two-time correlation and integrated response functions are calculated in our simulations. The results obtained mainly for Gaussian and, to a lesser extent, for bimodal interactions, support the existence of a spin-chiral decoupling scenario, where the chiral order occurs at a finite temperature while the spin degrees of freedom order at very low or zero temperature.

Order-by-Disorder in the XY Pyrochlore Antiferromagnet Revisited

We investigate the properties of the XY pyrochlore antiferromagnet with local <111> planar anisotropy. We find the ground states and show that the configurational ground state entropy is subextensive. By computing the free energy due to harmonic fluctuations and by carrying out Monte Carlo simulations, we confirm earlier work indicating that the model exhibits thermal order-by-disorder leading to low temperature long-range order consisting of discrete magnetic domains. We compute the spin wave spectrum and show that thermal and quantum fluctuations select the same magnetic structure. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we find that the state selected by thermal fluctuations in this XY pyrochlore antiferromagnet can survive the addition of sufficiently weak nearest-neighbor pseudo-dipolar interactions to the spin Hamiltonian. We discuss our results in relation to the Er2Ti2O7 pyrochlore antiferromagnet.

Universal fluctuations in the growth of semiconductor thin films

Scaling of surface fluctuations of polycrystalline CdTe/Si(100) films grown by hot wall epitaxy are studied. The growth exponent of surface roughness and the dynamic exponent of the auto-correlation function in the mound growth regime agree with the values of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) class. The scaled distributions of heights, local roughness, and extremal heights show remarkable collapse with those of the KPZ class, giving the first experimental observation of KPZ distributions in $2+1$ dimensions. Deviations from KPZ values in the long-time estimates of dynamic and roughness exponents are explained by spurious effects of multi-peaked coalescing mounds and by effects of grain shapes. Thus, this scheme for investigating universality classes of growing films advances over the simple comparison of scaling exponents.

Spectroscopy of a topological phase

Dynamical correlation functions of the toric code in a uniform magnetic field are studied inside the topological phase, in the small-field limit. Such an experimentally measurable quantity displays rich field-dependent features that can be understood via the interplay of the kinetics and the interaction of the anyonic excitations. In particular, it is sensitive to the two-quasiparticle bound states that are present in the spectrum for a wide range of magnetic fields. Interestingly, such collective modes can even constitute the lowest-energy excitations of the system.

Spin-orbit coupled transport and spin torque in a ferromagnetic heterostructure

Ferromagnetic heterostructures provide an ideal platform to explore the nature of spin-orbit torques arising from the interplay mediated by itinerant electrons between a Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling and a ferromagnetic exchange interaction. For such a prototypic system, we develop a set of coupled diffusion equations to describe the diffusive spin dynamics and spin-orbit torques. We characterize the spin torque and its two prominent--out-of-plane and in-plane--components for a wide range of relative strength between the Rashba coupling and ferromagnetic exchange. The symmetry and angular dependence of the spin torque emerging from our simple Rashba model is in an agreement with experiments. The spin diffusion equation can be generalized to incorporate dynamic effect such as spin pumping and magnetic damping.

Quantum criticality in an asymmetric three-leg spin tube: A strong rung-coupling perspective

We study quantum phase transitions in the asymmetric variation of the three-leg Heisenberg tube for half-odd-integer spin, with a modulation of one of the rung exchange couplings $J'_\perp$ while the other two are kept constant $J_\perp$. We focus on the strong rung-coupling regime $J_\perp \gg J_\parallel$, where $J_\parallel$ is the leg coupling, and analyze the effective spin-orbital model with a transverse crystal field in detail. Applying the Abelian bosonization to the effective model, we find that the system is in the dimer phase for the general half-odd-integer-spin cases without the rung modulation; the phase transition between the dimer and Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid phases induced by the rung modulation is of the SU(2)-symmetric Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type. Moreover, we perform a level spectroscopy analysis for the effective model for spin-1/2 using exact diagonalization, to determine the precise transition point $| J'_\perp - J_\perp| /J_\parallel \sim 0.283$ in the strong rung-coupling limit. The presence of the dimer phase in a small but finite region is also confirmed by a density-matrix renormalization group calculation on the original spin-tube model.

The renormalization flow of the hierarchical Anderson model at weak disorder

We study the flow of the renormalized model parameters obtained from a sequence of simple transformations of the 1D Anderson model with long-range hierarchical hopping. Combining numerical results with a perturbative approach for the flow equations, we identify three qualitatively different regimes at weak disorder. For a sufficiently fast decay of the hopping energy, the Cauchy distribution is the only stable fixed-point of the flow equations, whereas for sufficiently slowly decaying hopping energy the renormalized parameters flow to a delta peak fixed-point distribution. In an intermediate range of the hopping decay, both fixed-point distributions are stable and the stationary solution is determined by the initial configuration of the random parameters. We present results for the critical decay of the hopping energy separating the different regimes.

Corner contribution to cluster numbers in the Potts model

For the two-dimensional Q-state Potts model at criticality, we consider Fortuin-Kasteleyn and spin clusters and study the average number N_Gamma of clusters that intersect a given contour Gamma. To leading order, N_Gamma is proportional to the length of the curve. Additionally, however, there occur logarithmic contributions related to the corners of Gamma. These are found to be universal and their size can be calculated employing techniques from conformal field theory. For the Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters relevant to the thermal phase transition we find agreement with these predictions from large-scale numerical simulations. For the spin clusters, on the other hand, the cluster numbers are not found to be consistent with the values obtained by analytic continuation, as conventionally assumed.

Doubling of Entanglement Spectrum in Tensor Renormalization Group

We investigate the entanglement spectrum in HOTRG ---tensor renormalization group (RG) method combined with the higher order singular value decomposition--- for two-dimensional (2D) classical vertex models. In the off-critical region, it is explained that the entanglement spectrum associated with the RG transformation is described by `doubling' of the spectrum of a corner transfer matrix. We then demonstrate that the doubling actually occurs for the square-lattice Ising model by HOTRG calculations up to $D = 64$, where $D$ is the cut-off dimension of tensors. At the critical point, we also find that a non-trivial $D$ scaling behavior appears in the entanglement entropy. We mention about the HOTRG for the 1D quantum system as well.

Ab-initio characterization of the quantum linear-zigzag transition using DMRG

Ions of the same charge inside confining potentials can form crystalline structures which can be controlled by means of the ions density and of the external trap parameters. In particular, a linear chain of trapped ions exhibits a transition to a zigzag equilibrium configuration, which is controlled by the strength of the transverse confinement. Studying this phase transition in the quantum regime is a challenging problem, even when employing numerical methods to simulate microscopically quantum many-body systems. Here we present a compact analytical treatment to map the original long-range problem into a short-range quantum field theory on a lattice. We provide a complete numerical architecture, based on Density Matrix Renormalization Group, to address the effective quantum phi-four model. This technique is instrumental in giving a complete characterization of the phase diagram, as well as pinpoint the universality class of the criticality.

Chiral phases of two-dimensional hard-core bosons with frustrated ring-exchange

We study the zero temperature phase diagram of two-dimensional hard-core bosons on a square lattice with nearest neighbour and plaquette (ring-exchange) hoppings, at arbitrary densities, by means of a hierarchical mean-field theory. In the frustrated regime, where quantum Monte Carlo suffers from a sign problem, we find a rich phase diagram where exotic states with nonzero chirality emerge. Among them, novel insulating phases, characterized by nonzero bond-chirality and plaquette order, are found over a large region of the parameter space. In the unfrustrated regime, the hierarchical mean-field approach improves over the standard mean-field treatment as it is able to capture the transition from a superfluid to a valence bond state upon increasing the strength of the ring-exchange term, in qualitative agreement with quantum Monte Carlo results.
