Dynamic response of Ag monolayers adsorbed on Au(100) upon an oscillatory variation of the chemical potential: A Monte Carlo simulation study

Abstract

Based on the fact that the underpotential electrochemical deposition of Ag atoms on the $Au(100)$ surface exhibits sharp first-order phase transitions at well-defined values of the (coexistence) chemical potential ($μ_{coex}$), we performed extensive simulations aimed at investigating the hysteretic dynamic behavior of the system close to coexistence upon the application of a periodic signal of the form $μ(t) = μ_{coex} + μ_{o}sin(2Πt/τ) $, where $μ_{o}$ and $τ$ are the amplitude and the period of the sweep, respectively. For relatively short periods and small enough amplitudes the system becomes trapped either at low or high Ag coverage states, as evidenced by recording hysteresis loops. This scenario is identified as dynamically ordered states (DOS), such that the relaxation time $(τ_{relax})$ of the corresponding metastable state obeys $τ_{relax} > τ$. On the other hand, by properly increasing $μ_{o}$ or/and $τ$, one finds that the $Ag$ coverage gently follows the external drive (here $τ_{relax} < τ$) and the system is said to enter into dynamically disordered states (DDS), where hysteresis loops show almost symmetric limiting cycles. This symmetry breaking between limiting cycles driven by an external signal is discussed in terms of the concept of (out-of-equilibrium) Dynamic Phase Transitions between DOS and DDS, similar to those encountered when a magnetic system is placed in the presence of a variable external magnetic field. However, a careful finite-size scaling study reveals that, at least at $T = 300K$, the $Ag/Au(100)$ system does not exhibit true second-order phase transitions but rather a crossover behavior between states. A diagram showing the location of the ordered and disordered states in the $μ$ versus $τ$ plane is obtained and discussed.

Chladni states in Ising Spin Lattices

Low-temperature spin dynamics can become trapped in long-lived patterns shaped by the geometry of the interaction network. We introduce Chladni states, the binary spin configurations obtained by applying the sign function to Laplacian eigenmodes, and show that their Ising energy collapses onto a size-independent spectral curve in ferromagnets and frustrated antiferromagnets. This graph-spectral decomposition reconstructs frozen configurations, tracks memory of initial conditions, and detects, through the number of modes it requires, the loss of mesoscopic order in frustrated and spin-glass regimes. Finally, in spin-glass instances, a restricted search over low signed-Laplacian modes reaches energies comparable to those of simulated annealing while exploring a space of far smaller dimension.

Momentum distribution and correlation function of free particles in the Tsallis statistics using conventional expectation value and equilibrium temperature

We applied the Tsallis statistics with the conventional expectation value to a system of free particles, adopting the equilibrium temperature, which is often called the physical temperature. The entropic parameter $q$ in the Tsallis statistics is less than one for power-law-like distribution. The well-known relation between the energy and the temperature in the Boltzmann--Gibbs statistics holds in the Tsallis statistics, when the equilibrium temperature is adopted. We derived the momentum distribution and the correlation function in the Tsallis statistics. The momentum distribution and the correlation function in the Tsallis statistics are different from those in the Boltzmann--Gibbs statistics, even when the equilibrium temperature is adopted. These quantities depend on $q$ and $N$, where $N$ is the number of particles. It is also shown that the parameter $q$ is required to satisfy $1-1/(3N/2+1) < q < 1$.

Measurement-induced phase transitions in disordered fermions

Measurement-induced phase transitions are nonequilibrium transitions between phases characterized by distinct entanglement scaling behaviors, driven by the competition between unitary dynamics and measurements. Despite recent numerical efforts, how quenched disorder affects these transitions remains unclear. In this work, we study a $d$-dimensional noninteracting fermionic system subject to both quenched disorder and continuous monitoring of the local particle density, and derive an effective field theory describing its long-time universal behaviors. We find that the system is governed by the same nonlinear sigma model as in the case of clean monitored fermions, with disorder entering only through a modification of model parameters. This result suggests that the presence or absence of a measurement-induced phase transition is unaffected by the introduction of disorder. In spatial dimension $d=1$, the system exhibits only an area law phase and no transition, whereas in $d>1$, a transition persists between an area$\times$log law phase and an area law phase, with the critical measurement rate suppressed by disorder. Numerical simulation confirms the absence of MIPT in $d=1$, and the linear shift of the critical measurement rate by disorder scattering rate in higher dimensions predicted by analytical theory.
