Event-plane dependent dihadron correlations with harmonic $v_n$ subtraction in Au+Au Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=200$ GeV

Abstract

STAR measurements of dihadron azimuthal correlations ($Δϕ$) are reported in mid-central (20-60\%) Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=200$ GeV as a function of the trigger particle's azimuthal angle relative to the event plane, $ϕ_{s}=|ϕ_{t}-ψ_{\rm EP}|$. The elliptic ($v_2$), triangular ($v_3$), and quadratic ($v_4$) flow harmonic backgrounds are subtracted using the Zero Yield At Minimum (ZYAM) method. The results are compared to minimum-bias d+Au collisions. It is found that a finite near-side ($|Δϕ|<π/2$) long-range pseudorapidity correlation (ridge) is present in the in-plane direction ($ϕ_{s}\sim 0$). The away-side ($|Δϕ|>π/2$) correlation shows a modification from d+Au data, varying with $ϕ_{s}$. The modification may be a consequence of pathlength-dependent jet-quenching and may lead to a better understanding of high-density QCD.

Observation of Thermal Deuteron-Deuteron Fusion in Ion Tracks

A direct observation of the deuteron-deuteron (DD) fusion reaction at thermal meV energies, although theoretically possible, is not succeeded up to now. The electron screening effect that reduces the repulsive Coulomb barrier between reacting nuclei in metallic environments by several hundreds of eV and is additionally increased by crystal lattice defects in the hosting material, leads to strongly enhanced cross sections which means that this effect might be studied in laboratories. Here we present results of the 2H(d,p)3H reaction measurements performed on a ZrD2 target down to the lowest deuteron energy in the center mass system of 675 eV, using an ultra-high vacuum accelerator system, recently upgraded to achieve high beam currents at very low energies. The experimental thick target yield, decreasing over seven orders of magnitude for lowering beam energies, could be well described by the electron screening energy of 340 eV, which is much higher than the value of about 100 eV for a defect free material. At the energies below 2.5 keV, a constant plateau yield value could be observed. As indicated by significantly increased energies of emitted protons, this effect can be associated with the thermal DD fusion. A theoretical model explains the experimental observations by creation of ion tracks induced in the target by projectiles, and a high phonon density which locally increases temperature above the melting point. The nuclear reaction rate taking into account recently observed DD threshold resonance agrees very well with the experimental data.

Toward FAIR and AI-Ready Data: An Assessment of the GlueX Experiment's Data Ecosystem at Jefferson Lab

Department of Energy programs increasingly require that experimental data be not only preserved but usable by artificial intelligence (AI) systems, yet no accepted standard defines when a dataset is AI-ready. We argue that data must be FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) before they can be AI-ready, and that AI readiness is a distinct property requiring its own assessment. Using the GlueX experiment in Hall D at Jefferson Lab as a pilot, we map the data ecosystem, assess it against FAIR, and define an AI-readiness framework whose criteria are backed by deterministic metrics. We also evaluate existing validation software to separate what can be assessed with off-the-shelf tools from what requires domain-specific development. The assessment yields a set of findings, each paired with a recommendation, some of which are already in production or prototyped and others planned as next steps.

Limits on the chiral magnetic effect from the event shape engineering and participant-spectator correlation techniques in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV

The latest experimental studies related to the search for the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) in Pb$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV recorded with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented. Charge-dependent two-particle correlations relative to the reaction plane are measured for charged particles in the pseudorapidity range $|η| < 0.8$ and the transverse-momentum range $0.2< p_{\mathrm{T}} < 5$ GeV/$c$. Two approaches have been employed: in the first method, the contribution of the background to the measurement is varied using the event shape engineering (ESE), while the second relies on changing the contribution of the potential CME signal by measuring azimuthal correlations relative to the participant plane, where the background contributions are maximized, and spectator plane, where the CME signal contribution is maximized. Both methods yield results consistent with the absence of a CME signal within the measurement uncertainties. The result obtained from correlations relative to different symmetry planes, a technique applied for the first time at LHC energies, gives the possibility to test independently and confirm the upper limits from previous measurements, while the new limit from the ESE analysis offers improved constraint relative to previous attempts.
