Coherence Control of Directional Nonlinear Photocurrent in Spatially Symmetric Systems

Abstract

The interplay between crystal symmetry and its optical responses is at the heart of tremendous recent advances in light-matter interactions and applications. Nonlinear optical processes that produce electric currents, for example bulk photovoltaic (BPV) effect, require inversion symmetry broken materials, such as ferroelectrics. In the current work, we demonstrate that such BPV current could be generated in centrosymmetric materials with excitation of out-of-equilibrium coherent phonons. This is much different from the generally studied static or thermally excited states. We show that depending on the oscillating phase factor of the coherent phonon, uni-directional static electric current can be observed, in addition to some terahertz alternating currents. We also generalize the conventional injection charge current into angular momentum (spin and orbital) degrees of freedom, and demonstrate spin and orbital BPV photocurrents under coherent phonons. Our findings open the pathway to exploring the exotic phonon-photon-electron coherent interactions in quantum materials.

Transitions between bulk and interfacial fracture in diamond/$c$BN heterostructures

Whether an initially crack-free heterostructure fails at its interface or within an adjoining phase is controlled by the relative cohesion of competing atomic planes, but how interfacial chemistry, crystallographic orientation, and intermixing reshape this competition remains unclear. Here, we combine density functional theory (DFT) with a fine-tuned atomistic foundation model to resolve tensile fracture in coherent diamond/cubic boron nitride (cBN) heterostructures. The resulting potential reproduces independent DFT tensile responses, including an unseen (001) interface orientation. Interfacial termination, orientation, and diffusion-induced intermixing jointly determine fracture resistance and fracture-plane selection. C-N-bonded (111) and C-B-bonded (001) remain interface-controlled throughout the investigated intermixing range, whereas pristine C-B-bonded (111) fractures at a neighboring B-N plane inside cBN because the interface is more strongly bound. Increasing the diffusion fraction from 0 to 50.0% causes a nonlinear decrease in fracture strength from 50.3 to 15.8 GPa and drives a bulk-to-interface transition through three regimes: cBN fracture up to 4.86%, configuration-dependent competition between 7.6 and 10.1%, and interfacial fracture at 12.5% and above. Atom-resolved stress fields and DFT separation energetics show that this transition is associated with stress relocation and a reversal in the relative cohesion of competing planes, while electron localization analysis connects the cohesion hierarchy to termination- and orientation-dependent bonding. These results establish an atomistic framework for controlling fracture resistance and fracture pathways in strongly bonded heterostructures.

Spin-phonon coupling and isotope-related pseudo-molecule vibrations in layered Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ ferromagnet

The vibrational structure of chromium germanium telluride (Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$, CGT) is investigated and a strong spin-phonon coupling is revealed. The measured high-resolution Raman scattering (RS) spectra are composed of the 10 Raman-active modes: 5A$_\textrm{g}$ and 5E$_\textrm{g}$, predicted by calculation using the density functional theory and identified using polarization-resolved RS measurements. We also studied the effect of temperature on the RS spectra of CGT from 5~K to 300~K. A strong magneto-phonon coupling in CGT is revealed at temperatures of about 150~K and 60~K, which are associated with the appearance of the local magnetic order in the material and the transition to the complete ferromagnetic phase, respectively. Moreover, a unique shape of the A$_g^5$ mode composed of a set of very narrow Raman peaks is simulated using a model that takes into account vibrations of Ge-Ge pseudo-molecules for various Ge isotopes.

On a relationship between grain boundary free energy, grain boundary segregation, and grain boundary diffusion

We present a detailed analysis of the universal relationship between grain boundary (GB) free energy and GB self-diffusion coefficient derived by Borisov et al. (1964). This relationship was expressed by a simple equation that was used in many publications to predict GB energies on the basis of experimental diffusion data. Meanwhile, the physical assumptions and approximations underlying the Borisov model are poorly understood. As a result, the Borisov equation was often used outside its intended limits. Here, we re-derive the Borisov equation from ground up, identifying its underlying assumptions, correcting some errors and inconsistencies, and extending the original model to the case of impurity diffusion and diffusion by the interstitialcy and interstitial-dumbbell mechanisms. The meaning of the key assumption of the Borisov model, related to the free energy of the activated complex, is discussed, and ways to test this assumption are proposed.
