On recovering non-local perturbation of non-selfadjoint Sturm-Liouville operator

Abstract

Recently, there appeared a significant interest in inverse spectral problems for non-local operators arising in numerous applications. In the present work, we consider the operator with frozen argument $ly = -y''(x) + p(x)y(x) + q(x)y(a),$ which is a non-local perturbation of the non-selfadjoint Sturm--Liouville operator. We study the inverse problem of recovering the potential $q\in L_2(0, π)$ by the spectrum when the coefficient $p\in L_2(0, π)$ is known. While the previous works were focused only on the case $p=0,$ here we investigate the more difficult non-selfadjoint case, which requires consideration of eigenvalues multiplicities. We develop an approach based on the relation between the characteristic function and the coefficients $\{ ξ_n\}_{n \ge 1}$ of the potential $q$ by a certain basis. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions on the spectrum being asymptotic formulae of a special form. They yield that a part of the spectrum does not depend on $q,$ i.e. it is uninformative. For the unique solvability of the inverse problem, one should supplement the spectrum with a part of the coefficients $ ξ_n,$ being the minimal additional data. For the inverse problem by the spectrum and the additional data, we obtain a uniqueness theorem and an algorithm.

The exterior Steklov problem for Euclidean domains

We investigate the Steklov eigenvalue problem in an exterior Euclidean domain. First, we present several formulations of this problem and establish the equivalences between them. Next, we examine various properties of the exterior Steklov eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. One of our main findings is an Escobar-type lower bound for the first exterior Steklov eigenvalue on convex domains in dimensions three and higher. This bound is expressed in terms of the principal curvatures of the boundary and is sharp, with equality attained for a ball. Moreover, it implies the existence of a sequence of convex domains with fixed volume and the first exterior Steklov eigenvalues tending to infinity. This contrasts with the interior case, as well as with the two-dimensional exterior case, for which we show that an analogue of the Weinstock isoperimetric inequality holds.

Neumann eigenvalues of isosceles triangles: monotonicity and asymptotics

We prove Laugesen and Siudeja's conjecture on Neumann eigenvalues of isosceles triangles. After multiplication by the squared diameter, the first positive symmetric eigenvalue increases strictly with the apex angle $θ$, while the first antisymmetric eigenvalue decreases strictly up to the equilateral triangle and increases strictly thereafter. \rev{The proof combines a slice-average estimate of directional energies with the explicit equilateral eigenfunction.} A quadratic correction across slices also gives a two-term expansion for every fixed positive spectral index $k$ as $θ\downarrow0$, with relative correction $θ^2/6$ and remainder $O_k(θ^4)$.

Hadamard-type formulas for real eigenvalues of canonically symplectic operators

We give first-order asymptotic expansions for the resolvent and Hadamard-type formulas for the eigenvalue curves of one-parameter families of canonically symplectic operators. We allow for parameter dependence in the boundary conditions, bounded perturbations and trace operators associated with each off-diagonal operator, and give formulas for derivatives of eigenvalue curves emanating from the discrete eigenvalue of the unperturbed operator in terms of Maslov crossing forms. We derive the Hadamard-type formulas using two different methods: via a symplectic resolvent difference formula and asymptotic expansions of the resolvent, and using Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction and the implicit function theorem. The latter approach facilitates derivative formulas when the eigenvalue curves are viewed as functions of the spectral parameter. We apply our abstract results to derive a spectral index theorem for the linearised operator associated with a standing wave in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on a compact star graph.
