MemeBridge: A Dataset for Benchmarking and Mitigating the Bidirectional Cultural Gap in Meme Interpretation

Abstract

Communicating across cultures is inherently challenging, especially through culturally dense and ambiguous formats like memes. While people expect large language models (LLMs) to hold promise for bridging such gaps, existing benchmark datasets often fail to capture the cultural context necessary for accurate interpretation. To address this, we introduce MemeBridge, a curated dataset centered on U.S.-originated memes, designed to capture two complementary perspectives: (1) how Chinese participants interpret these memes, and (2) how U.S. participants anticipate how people from other cultures might misunderstand them. Here, context refers to implicit cultural knowledge, including background beliefs, norms, and shared assumptions that shape meme comprehension. The dataset was constructed via a multi-stage crowdsourcing pipeline with rigorous validation, including human agreement checks and GPT-based classification verification. Each meme is annotated with sentiment, emotion, cultural significance, and knowledge type, providing rich supervision for downstream tasks. Notably, we observe that the anticipated misunderstandings from U.S. participants are often inaccurate, highlighting the asymmetries in cultural understanding and the challenges of adopting perspectives beyond one's own. This bidirectional framing, which focuses on both expression and perception, enables more nuanced benchmarking of cross-cultural comprehension. Our probing of multiple LLMs reveals that while models developed in different cultural contexts exhibit partial cross-cultural understanding, they often struggle with sophisticated interpretations. By contrast, fine-tuning with MemeBridge improves model performance, underscoring the value of culturally grounded resources for training and evaluating LLMs in globally diverse settings.

Large-Scale User Behavior Analysis in Multimodal AI-Assisted Manual Task Execution

Conversational Task Assistants (CTAs) are multimodal dialogue systems that support users in complex real-world tasks such as cooking and DIY through voice, text, image, and video interactions. Prior user studies have focused on controlled settings, leaving limited understanding of real-world CTA usage at scale. In this work, we present a large-scale study of CTA usage based on thousands of users in-the-wild. Our large-scale real-world data analysis unveils new understandings of (i) user-CTA interaction flows, (ii) user intents, (iii) user conversational traits, and (iv) behavioral factors associated with user satisfaction. Our findings reveal key opportunities for future research in CTAs, particularly in user interaction design and task engagement, concluding with concrete design guidelines.

Pearmut: Human Evaluation of Translation Made Trivial

Human evaluation is the gold standard for multilingual NLP, but is often skipped in practice and substituted with automatic metrics because it is notoriously complex and slow to set up with existing tools with substantial engineering and operational overhead. We introduce Pearmut, a lightweight yet feature-rich platform that makes end-to-end human evaluation as easy to run as automatic evaluation. Pearmut removes common entry barriers and provides support for evaluating multilingual tasks, with a particular focus on machine translation. The platform implements standard evaluation protocols, including DA, ESA, and MQM, and is extensible to support new protocols. It features document-level context, absolute and contrastive evaluation, attention checks, ESAAI pre-annotations and both static and dynamic assignment strategies. Pearmut enables reliable human evaluation to become a practical, routine component of model development and diagnosis rather than an occasional effort.

On the Context Sensitivity of LLM Moral Judgment

A human's moral decision depends heavily on the context. Yet research on LLM morality has largely studied fixed scenarios. We address this gap by introducing Contextual MoralChoice, a dataset of moral dilemmas with systematic contextual variations known from moral psychology to shift human judgment: consequentialist, emotional, and relational. Evaluating 22 LLMs, we find that nearly all models are context-sensitive, shifting their judgments towards rule-violating behavior. Comparing with a human survey, we find that models and humans are most triggered by different contextual variations, and that a model aligned with human judgments in the base case is not necessarily aligned in its contextual sensitivity. This raises the question of controlling contextual sensitivity, which we address with an activation steering approach that can reliably increase or decrease a model's contextual sensitivity.
