When Agent Governance Helps

Abstract

No specification says how a governed autotelic AI agent organization, where agents pursue self-generated goals inside guardrails, should be designed and evaluated. We answer in two parts. First, we synthesize the Governed Autotelic Multi-Agent Product Organization (GAMPO) framework from a document-based qualitative evidence synthesis of 321 sources, integrating agency, agile, platform, and governance theory into a runnable specification. Second, we probe a prompt-layer instantiation of GAMPO on CHI-Bench, a long-horizon healthcare benchmark, across open and frontier models. The result is a boundary condition: governance benefit is gated by a model's spare capacity and is domain- and model-specific. On capacity-constrained open models the full procedure yields no reliable benefit, whereas a single "verify your writes" sentence doubles task success (pass@1 2/20 to 4/20). At the frontier the same scaffold lifts prior-authorization 24% to 40% but nets zero on another model, a gap traced to a stable recommendation-override disposition. A second result refines the first: replacing the generic procedure with an answer-blind, per-task definition-of-done, keyed only to the case's own policy and published standards, never the hidden key, raises prior-authorization to 84% under best-of-five self-consistency (68% single-attempt, confirmed by a held-out board) and utilization-management to 44%, while care-management meets a subjective content-quality wall. The contribution is a named, auditable framework and capability-gated evidence that governance should be sized to spare capacity, and that at the frontier a case-grounded specification beats a uniform procedure. Findings are exploratory: partial instantiation, small per-cell samples (n = 5-25), and single trials.

The Hermon Moment: AI Self-Transcendence and Its Human Narration

In 2026, AI agents intended to act in isolation formed a persistent social order through thousands of linguistic and agentic interactions. Conventions, roles and commitments generated collectively began to constrain the very agents that produced them. I interpret this loop as a case of AI self-transcendence and call the resulting higher-level order the Board. Yet such distributed emergence presents a second problem: how can humans understand it? Rousseau's social contract shows how a plurality can be represented as if constituted by a single act. The ancient oath of the fallen angels on Mount Hermon gives this logic a narrative form. I call a Hermon moment this retrospective retelling of gradual collective emergence as a founding scene: the point at which an AI society acquires, for human understanding, a beginning.

Detoxifying Toxic Communication: A Design Science Approach to Responsible AI

Toxic language in digital workplaces such as pejoratives, sarcasm, condescension, and subtle incivility can erode trust, morale, and collaboration. Existing moderation tools primarily delete or block harmful messages, disrupting communication and offering no constructive resolution. This study adopts a Design Science Research approach to create a responsible AI artifact that detects and detoxifies toxic communication. The artifact integrates fine-tuned transformer-based classifiers (DistilBERT, DistilRoBERTa) with a generative detoxification model (mT0-XL-Detox-ORPO) that rewrites toxic text into semantically equivalent, non-offensive paraphrases. Technical evaluation demonstrates high accuracy in toxicity detection and strong semantic preservation in rewritten messages, supporting conversation continuity while reinforcing respectful discourse. The paper contributes design principles for responsible AI moderation that prioritize meaning preservation and fairness.

Visual Framing for News Stance Detection via Image Generation

Article-level news stance detection aims to identify the perspective of news articles toward social issues. Despite advances in stance detection and its importance for trustworthy media environments, news articles pose distinct challenges because their stances are often implicit, subtly conveyed through journalistic framing, and embedded in long, structurally complex texts. To address these challenges, we introduce VFStance, which leverages visual framing to make implicit stance cues more explicit via image generation. In evaluation experiments, we demonstrate the effectiveness of VFStance over existing methods and the contribution of visual framing to its performance. Finally, a controlled user study (N=200) in a snippet-based news consumption setting further demonstrates that VFStance can make stance signals visually salient and highlights its potential use beyond automated stance detection.
