Event-Centric Earthquake Monitoring with a Multi-Station Transformer

Abstract

Earthquake catalogs underpin studies such as fault structure, earthquake processes and seismic hazard, and their value depends on being both complete and reliable. Machine learning has improved individual tasks of earthquake monitoring, but processing stations independently discards the consistency of arrivals across the network, and running tasks in sequence fragments the information describing each earthquake. We present EQNet2, a geometry-aware multi-station Transformer that jointly predicts phase arrivals, first-motion polarities, source location and magnitude, and the association of arrivals into events. On a Northern California test dataset and on continuous waveforms from Ridgecrest and the San Francisco Bay Area, EQNet2 recovers more weak arrivals, produces fewer false detections, and associates more picks into located events. Its learned attention links information across stations along time--distance patterns consistent with seismic moveout. As seismic networks grow denser, exploiting multi-station coherence and event-centric prediction offers a path to more complete and reliable catalogs.

DiffSpecMatch: Differentiable Waveform Inverse Design with Configurable Optimization Modules for Response-Spectrum Matching of Ground Motions

Response-spectrum matching is an underdetermined waveform inverse problem in which spectral compatibility must be achieved without uncontrolled changes in other engineering-relevant ground-motion characteristics. This study formulates the problem as differentiable waveform inverse design using a fixed SDOF dynamics engine and configurable optimization modules. An envelope-guided parameterization defines the correction waveform, while a hard projection enforces zero correction-induced terminal velocity and displacement. Differentiable SDOF responses then provide gradients for waveform optimization. Spectral fidelity and Arias-intensity accumulation are treated as adaptive objectives. Spectral feasibility, PGA, total Arias intensity, and displacement-path requirements are incorporated as constraints. The differentiable spectrum operator agrees with an exact solution of the equation of motion to within 0.002%. The complete five-damping configuration achieves a maximum spectral error of 5.00% over 375 ordinates. On a common benchmark, maximum errors of 2.61% and 8.47% are obtained for single- and multi-damping matching, respectively, while retaining the additional waveform constraints. Three-component applications further show that different engineering acceptance requirements can be accommodated through module reconfiguration without changing the forward dynamics.

Enhanced Seismicity Monitoring in the Rapid Scientific Response to the 2025 Santorini Crisis

We used a deep learning workflow to enhance earthquake detection during the 2025 seismic unrest between Santorini and Amorgos islands to track the evolution of the crisis in near real-time. We analysed the continuous seismic waveforms daily (1/2 - 3/3/25) as the crisis unfolded. Our analysis enhanced the earthquake catalogue from around 4,000 to 80,000 earthquakes. The enhanced catalogue allowed this international expert group to identify the volcanic-tectonic character, clearly revealing burst-like, spasmodic seismicity swarms, which is a pattern associated with fluid-driven processes from early stages of the crisis. Detailed moment tensor inversions in early events characterised by a significant non-double couple component indicated the involvement of magmatic or high-pressure hydrothermal fluids driving the unrest. Concurrent DL-enhanced tomography efforts identified a third, deep magmatic reservoir beneath Anydros Islet, consistent with pressure-driven processes. To date, volcanic-tectonic swarms in which >200 earthquakes of ML > 4 occurred within only a few weeks, largely within episodic bursts of seismicity, have not been observed elsewhere.

Correlative Microstructural Analysis of a Weathered Nantan Meteorite Fragment

The weathering of iron-rich phases within meteorites is a multi-stage process that significantly alters the microstructure and chemical composition based both on the environmental condition at the location of landing and the exposure time since the fall. This work investigates the resulting phases of this process in a correlative and comparative manner using a naturally weathered Nantan meteorite fragment. Techniques including X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF) were used for chemical and compositional determination and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) for phase determination and microstructural analysis. The combination of these techniques revealed the meteorite matrix to be predominantly composed of magnetite, with goethite and maghemite present as secondary phases. The meteorite had two pairs of distinct regions, one separated by Ni content and the other by grain size and Cl distribution. The Ni content regions are believed to have formed from a former Widmanstätten pattern, with the high ($\geq$2.6 at%) and low ($\leq$0.9 at%) Ni regions from plessite and kamacite, respectively. The kamacite and taenite within the plessite are suggested to have weathered through distinct mechanisms. The grain size regions were separated by a visible boundary 100-200 $μ$m wide where grains transitioned rapidly from fine to elongated grains and the Cl content changed from low and dispersed to concentrated spots. Lastly, a brecciated phase was found within the sample and was identified as a large cohenite grain which exhibited signs of weathering, including vein-like extensions of the matrix composed of NiO and magnetite, and deposits of iron and nickel carbonates.
