VoroTypes: automated enumeration of Voronoi cell topologies for structural identification of complex crystals in atomistic simulations

Abstract

VoroTypes enumerates, for an arbitrary crystal structure, the complete family of Voronoi cell topologies that can arise under small generic perturbations of atomic positions, and exports it as a topological filter for the VoroTop framework. This extends per-atom structural identification in molecular dynamics simulations, previously limited to a handful of simple reference structures, to complex crystals such as Frank--Kasper and Laves phases, with per-sublattice resolution. The package takes a standard crystallographic description (a CIF or POSCAR file) as input, applies exact symmetry reduction and validity pruning to accelerate the enumeration, and produces filters that load directly into the standalone VoroTop program or into OVITO. A library of pre-computed filters covers over a thousand structures from the Materials Project.

Landau theory and exchange instabilities in Mn$_5$Si$_3$: A case against strain-induced altermagnetism

Thin-film Mn$_5$Si$_3$ is a prominent altermagnetic candidate owing to its metallicity, demonstrated anisotropic anomalous transport, and proposed $d$-wave exchange splitting that could enable spin-polarized transport. Its postulated altermagnetic structure has zero propagation vector, unlike the bulk collinear antiferromagnetic AFM2 phase, which orders at the $M$ star. We analyze both phases using Landau theory, first-principles paramagnetic-instability calculations, and Monte Carlo simulations. AFM2 appears in Landau theory as a symmetry-protected inversion-even, permutation-odd mode at a single arm of the $M$ star. At $Γ$, the same intracell pattern belongs to the collinear sector of an $E_{2g}$ order parameter; both phases require higher-order terms for their selection. Disordered-local-moment calculations identify the leading exchange instability at $M$, and the resulting classical Heisenberg model orders at the bulk experimental temperature scale into the orthogonal $3M$ phase favored by single-site entropy. Magnetostructural coupling to $E_{2g}$ deformations favors single-$M$ AFM2 ordering. The estimated homogeneous-strain contribution to the relevant quartic coefficient is about a quarter of the competing entropic term near the bulk transition, while internal $E_{2g}$ relaxations are expected to provide additional stabilization. The $Γ$-point $E_{2g}$ mode, whose Landau theory contains the altermagnetic sector, is substantially weaker and further suppressed by epitaxial strain comparable to that reported for Mn$_5$Si$_3$/Si(111) films exhibiting anomalous transport. The same strain reduces the leading magnetic exchange scale. These results explain the bulk $M$-point instability but strongly disfavor relocating the propagation vector from $M$ to $Γ$ in a moderately strained bulklike Mn$_5$Si$_3$ film, leaving the identity of the Hall-active phase unresolved.

Metastable polar order and phase competition in Carpy-Galy LaTaO4

Carpy-Galy LaTaO$_4$ undergoes a structural sequence linking the antipolar monoclinic $P2_1/c$ ground state and the polar orthorhombic $Cmc2_1$ phase through an incommensurately modulated regime. First-principles calculations identify a metastable polar monoclinic $P2_1$ phase as a commensurate intermediate in the phase-transition landscape. As a common subgroup of $P2_1/c$ and $Cmc2_1$, $P2_1$ provides a symmetry-connected route between the established polymorphs. Mode-resolved energy surfaces for these symmetry-breaking pathways show that coupling between the respective primary order parameters and an isosymmetric relaxation stabilizes the $P2_1$ minimum along both pathways. Consequently, the $P2_1/c\rightarrow P2_1$ transformation has a finite energy barrier, while a restricted soft-mode model retains competing $P2_1$ and $Cmc2_1$ basins over an illustrative range of harmonic stiffness. Lattice-metric and neutron-diffraction comparisons indicate a shared displacement character between the calculated commensurate state and the experimental IC-o modulation, supporting the use of $P2_1$ as a commensurate structural reference for IC-o. Finally, composition-dependent energetics suggest chemical routes for tuning polar-antipolar competition.

Angular compliance, not amplitude, governs the dielectric response of BaTiO3

Soft-mode theory specifies a frequency, not what a local polar unit does. What real-space motion underlies the dielectric response of BaTiO3 therefore remains unclear. Using electric-field-induced molecular dynamics with a machine-learning force field, we show that the permittivity tracks the field-induced angular redistribution of local Ti-O off-centering, not its magnitude. Temperature and biaxial strain modify the local structure through different microscopic routes, yet both dielectric responses collapse onto a common relation with the same orientational descriptor, providing a real-space counterpart to soft-mode behavior.
