Neural Vector Field Transformations: Learning the Flow of Autonomous Systems by Conjugation to Explicitly Integrable Reference Flows

Abstract

We represent the flow map of an autonomous ODE $\dot x=f(x)$ as a conjugate $Φ_t=F_θ^{-1}\circΨ_t\circ F_θ$ of an explicitly integrable reference flow $Ψ_t$ by an invertible neural network $F_θ$, the neural vector field transformation. The representation is an exact flow for every parameter value and inherits the phase portrait of the reference. A $C^1$ conjugacy preserves the eigenvalues of equilibria, the periods and Floquet multipliers of periodic orbits and the frequency-amplitude relation of centers, so these invariants must be learnable parameters of $Ψ$. We give parametrized reference flows with explicit integral curves, show that an action-angle reference is Hamiltonian only if its learnable frequency map is a gradient, and show that an orientation-preserving $F_θ$ cannot reverse the rotation sense of the reference, so it must be fixed before training. The main contribution is a training recipe: a push-forward equation residual made relative to $|f|$ and sampled log-uniformly in $|x|$ around an equilibrium, with the anchors $F_θ(0)=0$, $DF_θ(0)=I$; a symplectic transformation with the gradient-form frequency map; and invariants initialized from the field or data. With it the full spectrum of a three- and a six-dimensional nonlinear sink is recovered (eigenvalue deviation $8.3\times10^{-3}$ and relative error 2.3%, three seeds each), and the action-angle variables of a four-dimensional integrable Hamiltonian system with frequency maps and actions correct to a median of 0.09% and 0.22%, and an exactly symplectic flow. On a dispersive system a time-input network is eight times more accurate inside its horizon, and the data-only identification of the Van der Pol oscillator yields a conjugacy on the data region with the Floquet exponent 17% off; an oracle run with the true invariants frozen attributes this to the expressivity of $F_θ$.

Normal form method of center-focus problem in piecewise-smooth systems and algorithm design

We investigate the normal form method in piecewise-smooth monodromic systems to distinguish center from focus and determine the order of focus as well as degenerate Hopf bifurcations. For the normal form of piecewise-smooth monodromic systems given in previous publications in the sense of topologically equivalence, we prove the algebraic equivalence between the Lyapunov constants of the original piecewise-smooth system and the coefficient series of its normal form. With this algebraic equivalence, we prefer to compute the normal form coefficient series to avoid cumbersome integrals of trigonometric functions in the computation of Lyapunov constants, and find the relations of foci of the piecewise-smooth system and its subsystems: among the orders and among the stabilities. Moreover, we design algorithms for computing the normal form coefficient series and combine them with the obtained stability relation to construct stabilizing switching signals for state-dependent switched nonlinear systems, one basic problem in the control theory.

Families of relative periodic orbits in the planar three-body problem via consecutive alignments

Relative periodic orbits (RPOs) are solutions of the three-body problem that are periodic in a uniformly rotating reference frame and, in general, quasi-periodic in inertial coordinates. We present a numerical procedure for computing and continuing one-parameter families of RPOs of the planar Newtonian three-body problem. The method exploits consecutive syzygies, understood here as configurations in which the three bodies are aligned and their velocities satisfy the corresponding symmetry conditions. Matching the positions and momenta at two consecutive alignments reduces the computation of RPOs to a low-dimensional nonlinear problem. Its solutions are then numerically continued, and linear stability is determined from the nontrivial eigenvalues of the rotated monodromy matrix after removing the neutral directions associated with conserved quantities and continuous symmetries. The procedure is applied to several mass distributions and initial configurations, producing families of Poincaré, Hill, and binary-type solutions. These families exhibit transitions from nearly circular to highly eccentric motion, changes of stability near resonances and turning points, and absolute periodic solutions when the rotation angle is a rational multiple of 2π. In the Hill families, the continuation connects satellite configurations with circumstellar motion as the smallest body loses its gravitational binding to the intermediate body. Circumbinary and circumstellar configurations are also obtained in the binary regime. The results illustrate the dynamical diversity of RPOs and provide coherent three-body motions that can be used as prescribed trajectories in restricted four-body models.

Non-freezing of the proximity digraph and non-pseudostable convergence in heterogeneous Hegselmann--Krause models: Counterexamples to conjectures and results of Mirtabatabaei and Bullo

In 2012, Mirtabatabaei and Bullo studied heterogeneous Hegselmann--Krause models of opinion dynamics, where different agents may have different confidence or influence bounds. They conjectured that opinion vectors always converge, a fundamental problem that remains open. In support of this main conjecture they gave some partial results and made some auxiliary conjectures. Here we give counterexamples to two of these auxiliary conjectures, and even to one theorem in their paper. We explain why these disproved conjectures and false theorem nevertheless likely remain valid for almost all initial opinion vectors. In the last section (Section 7), we describe the role of AI in the production of the results in this paper.
