Perfect sampling of Ising spin glasses with bounding chains

Abstract

We study perfect sampling algorithms for Ising spin glasses based on coupling from the past and bounding chains, on several graph families and coupling distributions. For the single-site bounding chain, we establish coalescence in $O(n\log n)$ updates under Dobrushin conditions. On sparse random graphs, our numerical results suggest that efficient sampling extends throughout the tree-uniqueness regime, with a slowdown beyond this threshold. On Erdős-Rényi random graphs $\mathcal{G}(n,d/n)$ with standard Gaussian couplings, we introduce a block bounding chain and prove its coalescence in $O(n\log n)$ block updates in the tree-uniqueness regime for sufficiently large $d$, each block update requiring $O(n)$ operations, adapting a proof in~\cite{Efthymiou_Zampetakis_2024} for the rapid mixing of block Glauber dynamics. On periodic lattices, our experiments instead suggest that the single-site bounding chain is limited by the looseness of its bounding envelope, whereas on the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, slow coalescence is accompanied by damage spreading at every inverse temperature tested. These observations motivate alternative bounding representations and couplings as strategies to improve perfect sampling on spin glasses.

Machine learning cannot decarbonise the subsurface until it can be audited

Geological CO2 storage, geothermal energy and underground hydrogen storage depend on irreversible or high-cost decisions made with sparse data and incomplete physical understanding. Machine learning (ML) increasingly informs these decisions, yet methods are usually judged on predictive accuracy rather than on whether their outputs can be trusted, traced and acted upon. We argue that subsurface ML should be designed as decision infrastructure with shared systems that carry calibrated uncertainty and provenance from observation to operating decision. We propose a decision-readiness checklist, an audit-trail workflow for monitoring updates, and benchmark designs that score models by the decisions they support. We identify validation needs shared across the three technologies, and the data-access and governance steps needed for ML to support regulatory and investment decisions.

Sequential Retrieval in Dense Associative Memory: Asymptotic Dynamics and Storage Capacity

We study the retrieval dynamics of an $n$-body asymmetric dense associative memory model, in which sequential retrieval is implemented by shifting one pattern index in the higher-order Hebbian interaction. The model exhibits sequential retrieval of the stored patterns, and the retrieval state corresponds to a stable limit-cycle attractor. The storage capacity is defined as the maximum loading rate for which this limit cycle remains stable. Using generating functional analysis, we derive the dynamical equations describing the sequential retrieval state. The generating functional analysis reveals that the retarded self-interaction term vanishes in the asymmetric model, and the resulting overlap dynamics is reproduced by an Amari-Maginu-type signal-to-noise analysis. Also, we find that for the interaction order $n\ge 3$, the normalized storage capacity decreases monotonically with increasing interaction order, in contrast to symmetric Modern Hopfield models.

Two-stage Slowdown of Vacancy-mediated Diffusion in a Lattice Gas Model with Quenched Disorder and Spins

We present a lattice gas model with random interactions quenched in space and spins quenched to the particles. The vacancy-mediated diffusion is studied in equilibrium. A two-stage slowdown is witnessed in both the mean squared displacement and the spatial overlaps. We demonstrate that the plateaus are due to anti-correlation at the corresponding length scale. The anti-correlation diminishes quickly with increasing lag time. A broad and yet finite distribution of the survival function of vacancies suggests their normal diffusion at large time limit. Our model can serve as a new playground for understanding hierarchical dynamics in glassy-like dynamical systems.
